Sony Reader App for Android - XPERIA X10 General

I've been waiting to try the new Sony Reader app since it was first announced a few months ago. December launch was bumped to January launch. It is finally available, but not for the X10. Froyo only. Talk about salting an open wound. Bummer.

Of course that is not Sony's issue that Ericsson has decided to produce an outdated phone with outdated OS and not upgrade it to anything beyond 2.1 because their developers are not able to work on Time Scape and bring it to 2.2.
I forgot that in this particular issue, Sony and Ericsson are one entity. Yep, speak of which....

since se has no phone YET running froyo its more or less quite embarassing

Unless SE's hinting at Froyo for the X10 then this app is... I dunno what to make of this move... Sony can't be this stupid... or can they?...
Sure, they can say it's meant to reach not just their userbase but the android community at large but... wow... just wow

Sad but true
Anyway, not all is lost. This app could be ported...

Or we could just install Z's Froyo rom... other than no camcorder (pics work, just not video ATM) it is great and I am getting 1500+ in quadrant.
Just a suggestion, I know some like the stock rom, or just dislike a non-complete rom.

I am holding off on Froyo roms for now, but fully intend to use one before I buy another phone. My contract with AT&T just started in August. Gonna own this X10 a while.

seems like someone can't really understand what is he reading. we're not getting the update, and it's not about google giving update, it's about google forcing these companies to update their phones. but only NEW PHONES (read that text carefully, it's written down there), phones that have been just released, and phones that will be released in future. it's not working backwards, older phones ain't getting upgrades. sorry to turn your dreams into a dust. just a little advice - read the whole text, not just the heading, before you start a thread like this - you made ppl excited for no reason. now i have to make their joy go away

X8 is excellent phone.
And, to substantiate my statement as soon as our devs crack bootloader and fully working Gingerbread is made this phone will get even better. Worth waitng.
Times are tough and a lot of us just can't affort better phone.
P.S.: @as-mario you're troller... read twice before you post... think before you blink!
I have already sent several messages to SE Brazil and the answer is always the same:
"The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 will not be updated because it does not meet the requisites of Android 2.3" - or nearly so, but always the same direction of response -> A short NO!
Perhaps with support from Google the story will change, because only the X10 received the upgrade to 2.3 from Sony Ericsson and many users still use their custom ROMS ...

We should sent emails to GooGle android center about our problem. Google can force SE to update our phone. We can make petition to google. We can make petition at least for unlocking bootloader.

[HELP!] Purchasing New Phone

Its time to purchase a new phone and i am looking at the Samsung Galaxy SII. Can someone please outline whats good/bad about the device and how the development is going? I can see that there is a lot of stock ROMs avaliable for it but will there be ROMs like CM7 and Sense, as it will take a while to port ROMs to its processor as it has to be done from scratch
I'd really recommend you to wait for a bit
Wait for the google Phone by Motorola
OR I'd say go for a ARC

Best to go and ask people in galaxy s forum? Afterall they do own the phone.

I'd say go for a HTC device then
They have many many devs
They have the latest Specs and I mean "fast"
Don't go for Samsung
sgs2 is awesome.... The screen is vivid, it's dual core so it will be more future proof and because it is the biggest selling android phone of all time there will be tons of development. Also samsung is very well known to support development and custom roms, hiring the cyanogen mod developer, etc...
do not get an arc, there have been a lot of problems with the build, the housing has been cracking for a big number of people who bought them.
What about the htc sensation.

hahah I did it in like 2 minutes, it was no harder than flashtool...
There is one program that s-off and roots your device, just like flashtool.
The reason x10 is so easy is because we don't have an unlocked bootloader, so we use flashtool for everything.
On htc phones you can flash full custom roms which include kernel, and you can also flash different radios.
It is literally no more difficult, and much better imo. Say if you break your usb port, you aren't screwed like you are with an x10.
I learned everything in about 5 minutes, read one small tutorial.

i suggest you wait and see the upcoming new releases of phones by other brands. Samsung Galaxy SII seems quite uninteresting. i feel x10 could do better in general. What can a dual or quad core phone do that our X10 can't? Better gaming and HD video on a 4 inch screen??? Wow, but not a reason to spend hundreds of dollars... for me anyway.

ICS Upgrade

Thought id start this thread to create a bit of build up to the upgrade, im a regular arc user so ive still got another month or so to wait but il feel good if the arc s gets theirs on time, which being the end of march could be any day now. Sony seem to be quiet on this, anyone heard anything?
I'm hoping they release the ICS for arc s by the end of this weekend, the suspense is killing me slowly lol. I check this forum and sony blog post every morning.
As they said late March to early April, that could mean the update would between 15 March and 15 April.
Would love to get an update from SE on the progress for the first phones that are due upgrades.
Clearly feeling a little bit left out now that Samsung are releasing theirs.
Hasn't HTC also updated a device?

I'm very enthusiastic about ICS too but doesn't it mean that we won't have our devices rooted anymore? I've linked tons of apps via Link2SD and my Arc don't have enough space to hold them all.
I'm worried when we will have to upgrade to ICS, AFAIK a lot of apps out there is not yet compatible with ICS, until the developer will upgrade the app.
But I'm also Excited because lots of optimization and features will be available to us, specially that Adreno 205 Driver will be included(I read it somewhere)

I think otherwise. Almost every app I tried is fully compatible with ICS.
Also, Sony has announced the neo L in China and it launches with ICS on board. It uses the same chipset as the arc (MSM8255). Perhaps we could port it when someone gets and uploads the filesystem dump, that is, if the device comes out sooner than the ICS update.
There's nothing on PTCRB yet and updates usually appear on here well in advance of the update actually being pushed. So it could still be weeks away assuming they haven't had any serious issues they need to fix first. It's been 4 weeks since the beta and not a peep from the Sony devs here on XDA which is a shame.

Farewell

As with so many other people, my phone contract has expired. As such I now have a beautiful Xperia T to replace my X10 with. However two years together with it can't be so easily forgotten so it is with a heavy heart that I say good bye to this corner of XDA. It has been quite a journey- the debate if we would get gingerbread, about dual touch, the 16m colour screen? I remember it all! I was here when the founders of the X10 community were eager- DoomLord, Trip'n'raver, Z, J rdannar and all the countless others. In the past year however, they have been replaced with the likes of ChampionSwimmer, Amin, WolfBreak, FeraVolt and Vasishta Reddy. So the X10 thrives and survives! Although I will no longer have the device I will still check in ocassionally and if I can share what I have learnt in the past 24 months I will do so gladly. To the Devs all I can say is keep on rocking and make our x10 shine! To the users, obey the forum rules and keep faith

Barnaby

just out of curiosity...why Sony as ur next device???
A combination of ui, the specs and that I love Sony's designs! I was so envious of the arc! The t was all I wanted and more! Factor in the my fan boy attitude and the James bond stuff it was ideal! HTC I don't like the ui, same as Samsung. IPhone I say no to on principle and the others aren't nice...

Hey Galcactus,
I can understand leaving this community isn't nice. There has been a great development and there is a great community-feeling.
I recognize everything you've said. I also was there in the early days (remember the F5 party's on TripNRaver ROMs).
But good stuff ends some days.
Even that my subscription has ended already (beginning of september) I'm still using it, with my x10.
Newer subscriptions cost me more money. So I'm thankfull that there still are dev's for x10, that can give me ICS.
Anyways, have fun with your Mr. T!
