Which of these 2 phones in your opinion truly owns the iphone4. Evo 4g or epic 4g - Epic 4G General

Just want to get a chat going about this whole android vs apple os situation. So why not see which out of the two best phones sprint currently has to offer that can truly own the iphone4.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

Neither.
The iPhone4 is a great piece of hardware and has the gigantic app store as a ridiculously awesome selling point.
The Epic4g has similar hardware to the iPhone 4, but has a much more open OS that allows user customization and has much more media playback capability than the iPhone or Evo4g. Where the iPhone has a higher res screen, the Epic has a much better looking screen.
The Evo4g has a larger screen than the iPhone but with a smaller resolution. The Evo4g has the slowest hardware of the 3, but has the largest screen and a kickstand. It also has media playback capabilities that are hindered by HTC's refusal to offer hardware acceleration for Divx, which places it ahead of the iPhone but behind the Epic4g.
Neither phone "owns" the iPhone. Of the three, I obviously think the Epic4g fits my needs the most. I am also not a fan of iOS at all, but there is no arguing against the might that is the App Store. In fact, I think that iOS is absolute garbage personally, and I use it daily on my iPad. I don't like Apple as a company really because of what they do with their software, but there is absolutely no arguing that they put out the highest quality hardware in the business.

Well...I think we should just be comparing android phones in this situation. Because the iPhone isnt for Sprint so even if we were to all come to the conclusion that the iPhone is the best phone out there, there's nothing we can do about it. But with the Evo and Epic we can compare/contrast and switch. But I think there are already threads like that so...meh.
But if I were to pick a Sprint phone to compare to the iPhone...I'd choose the Epic and I would say that they are about the same. I wouldn't throw the Evo in the mix, I just got an Epic today and I'm never going to look at my Evo again(I'd rather go back to my 1st gen iPhone before I go back to the Evo)...I could write essays about everything wrong with that device.

When i had my evo it started getting slower and slower over time and the battery would drain faster than ever.

I'll tell you this..not the EVO..ironically the iPhone has better hardware specs then the EVO...the Epic and the Galaxy S line are right now the only Android phones that beat the iPhone hardware wise..

I say both best the iphone because of android I prefer Epic over Evo

I know!! >.< so frustrating. And idk, the dev community is bigger so it has that, but I'd rather have a device where you dont have to rely on the community that much. I mean, I rooted my Epic today and put on 2.2.1 and this thing is amazing. I'm not thinking about any other roms or anything, I'm already happy. With the Evo, as soon as you flash one rom and kernel combo, you're only happy for like 10mins, then you find all these things you dont like and you're flashing something else...And must of it is all the placebo effect. Out of all the kernels for the Evo, there are only 2-3 that actually seemed to help, the rest were the same as stock. But idk...I'm just an angry ex-Evo user. After using the Epic today, I'm just pissed off at the Evo.
Epic = iPhone > Evo.
And apple is lucky that they dont try to put iOS on everything, or else their phone would be garbage..but at the same time, since they didn't do that, thats probably what's going to bury them. Well..that's if Android doesn't bury itself first.

I need the Epic's physical keyboard.

Well, I got my Epic first and I love it, but 4 months down the road, I got tired of waiting on Samsung/Sprint to release 2.2 and the source code and just recently got myself an Evo to play around with also. Both are great phones, and the Epic definitely feels better in my hand is easier to type with when I am doing long emails or long text messaging. I find my Evo (only had for a few days now) to be awesome in its own aspects. It gets the latest and the greatest from Cyanogen MOD with CM7 being AWESOME. Untill the Epic actually gets the source code released and more development can happen, then I think I will stick with my Evo. Cause when that actually happens, CM6 will be done and CM7 will be ported shortly after and work fully, and then I can sell my Evo.
Oh, and btw, iOS sucks. I can't stand their layout, so I can't really compare the 2, I played on my friends 3gs and it's like using a 1 button mouse to me. What the hell were they thinking with 1 button to rule them all at the bottom. I can't stand it. Apple does a pretty good job at upgrading their OS, but they will never be as good as Android because of the open source programmers and developers we have that will continue to push the envelope with what is released.

Epic....
cos I own one

Trade Epic for Evo????

Guys I need your opinions, I have had the EPIC since launch day, after to switching to sprint from a Nexus One on T-Mobile. Sure I like the keyboard, but find myself using it say 50 percent of the time and other 50 the onscreen. But what makes me want to return it for the Evo are these Reasons:
1. Android 2.2 – Already available on Evo
2. Custom Roms – Many already developed on Evo
3. HTC- I feel they push updates much faster, and work harder to polish there UI.
4. SAMSUNG- They already have gave us a Touch Wiz that is only a watered down version of the ones on the other Carriers, Cant change the icons on dock, No media or clock apps that the other Touch Wiz 3.0 phones have, and Finally UPDATES! They have announced 2.2 on there tablet and already has it working on it… Where is our 2.2?
5. CASES, putting a case on the Epic makes it look huge like a brick, and not very form fitting.
What’s your guys opinions? I mean I like the phone, im just so scared of it being left behind of the dust because Samsung wont fulfill there development promises, While HTC has a pretty good track record for moving updates fast.
I'm in EXACTLY the same boat.
Came from a Nexus on Tmo, to Sprint. Love the Epic dearly, but am still worried about it being supported by Samsung.
The Evo is a step down from the Epic to be honest, but a high powered device is nothing if the manufacturer doesn't continue to support it!
How are they not supporting it? They just did an update yesterday, and have already said Froyo IS coming. What more do you want?
The Evo is a step backwards as the Snapdragon CPU is slower, and the graphics are incredibly inferior to the PowerVR GPU inside the Epic.
I used to have an Evo, and when it first came out it had its own issues as well. I'd say you should stay on board at least until day 29, and then see how you feel about it.

How the **** can Samsung and sprint release a phone that has a few major bugs:
1. After 24 hours (or less) the gps doesn't work unless you reboot (or use a program to flush data) the phone.
2. 3g uploads (99% of the country uses 3g) are capped at 150k
3. when you upload ANYTHING the phone studders like john the studderer on the howard stern show ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yBI8zdqLzw&feature=related )
I'm pretty pissed to be honest.
I came from a Evo. To tell you the truth, I prefer the Epic over the Evo. 30fps caps and a weak gpu. I couldn't even explain to you how bad it was, the Epic blows everything away in the Evo, besides the development of course.
Pros:
Evo development
Kickstand
Bigger screen? (I don't have a preference, but it's noticeably larger)
HTC Sense (I hate it, then love it.)
Works with any type of mic headset. <3
Cons:
In call sound is pretty low, I had to turn it all the way up and still couldn't hear other people well. (I had 2 Evo's, both were the same in call quality)
30 fps cap. It can be fixed with a kernel, still 30 fps cap is pretty low for such a great phone.
Gpu lags, games like N.o.v.a was playable, but not smooth as it is on the Epic.
The touch screen wasn't as accurate. Miss type a lot more on the Evo than the Epic.
No support for direct media playback. The epic does this flawlessly, I don't even have to convert videos.
The screen is washed out. The HTC Hero was noticeably more colorful.
Horrible wifi signal.
Not to bash on the Evo, I loved it, but it wasn't what I was looking for. If you enjoy a great development scene. I say go all in for it. It's a great phone. Though I left it for a better phone, Epic 4g.

What more do i want? Since i had 2.2 on my nexus one in May, i want 2.2 on an epic. lol. And its the point, if they take this long for 2.2 now, will they even update it to the next version of android that Google will be updating q1 next year? And why the watered down Touch Wiz? Clock app and music player for example, have you seen the apps on Vibrant. We do not have touch wiz 3.0 its like 2.5ish. Your write about waiting tell day 29 though to have a strong decision. I probably just want to much to fast.

Im in the same boat, although i havent officially left tmo yet. I did however return my epic 4G after 4 days and ordered an EVO, and im thinking of canceling that and just sticking with my HD2 and Nexus One. I just dont trust samsung and there update history. Yes they released the update yesterday but of course that was fast cause it generates money for them.
Besides the battery taking forever to charge, i really have no other issues with the phone. Its one of the best i ever owned, i just wish i had more confidence in samsung and i really hope they prove me wrong.
I will admit i will miss not having to convert movies for it, thats what i loved most about my N900.

What?
I came from the HTC Hero. Ask any other Hero user how quickly HTC pushes out updates and how "polished" they are...
HTC doesn't do any better than any other company. The thing is, they have community support. The ONLY reason that the Hero was bearable was because of the dev community (which made the phone amazing).
Like several people have said, Samsung already put out an update for this phone (two, if you count the weird launch day update). They've promised 2.2 sometime this year (October was the last time frame I heard). The EVO didn't launch with 2.2 either, remember? The Nexus One is Google's baby and is going to get updates before any other phone. Every other phone has to have Froyo cleaned up for it.
Give Samsung a little bit of a chance. You know you'll regret it if you give up and the Epic gets 2.2 and blows everything else away.

My Epic feels snappier than an Evo on the best Cyanogen crack. This doesn't bother me one bit. Plus once again phone's only been out since August 31. ROMS are on the way
3. HTC- I feel they push updates much faster, and work harder to polish there UI.
I actually like TouchWiz and sideways scrolling, plus an update just came out for Epic
4. Your 2.2 will be here when it gets here. "They have announced 2.2 on there tablet", and so what????? Did they ever say the Epic is NOT getting 2.2
5. CASES, putting a case on the Epic makes it look huge like a brick, and not very form fitting.
...and so is putting lipstick on a pig. The Epic has a slide out keyboard, which naturally adds to its girth. If you can't stand it like that in a case then go commando.

You buy a phone for the potential it has right now (and the Epic wins over the Evo performance wise, even on stock in a lot of areas), not what it may do nor not do eons from now. And besides 2.2 is set for the Epic. If you don't have the patience to wait for it then please take back the Epic and let someone else not be deprived of one in stock.

The DI07 update supposedly fixed the massive lag while uploading, at least in the gmail/email app.
I love the epic its the best phone i have ever had, but its a samsung. I hate the name samsung. HTC phones feel, look, and sound much more classier.

Not for me. That and the ****ty radio are my two biggest gripes about the epic.
The evo has a lot of gripes. I had one since release.
1. Even with evo switch the fps is still inconsitant and the device feels laggy at times and thqts with 2.2. The epic on 2.1 is is already faster.
2. ****ty video and sub par camera software
3. Screen isn't as nice
The evo wins hands down on
1. Radio at least at this point is superior
2. Solid build as its not a slider

I was hoping it would. However, take a picture, and upload it to anywhere (picasa, facebook, etc) it hasn't fixed it for me at all.
In all fairness, the Epic just came out on the 31 of August. I have both and love them both(the Evo is not activated at this time, strictly Wifi), but the Evo didn't get 2.2 until over 2 months sfter release...patience
I actually sold my evo and got the epic and I haven't looked back. Both phones are nice but just like some people recognizes the Epic's problems, one must also remember that when the Evo launched, it too had its share of problems...battery drainage being one them, screen seperation, screen tearing etc. The Evo also launched with 2.1.
It seems as though everybody want froyo and they want it now. I think you should just keep the epic and just wait it out for froyo. Because I have a feeling that once froyo hits our epics, everyone that left to run to the evo or some other phone will be having some big second thoughts.

One thing that I'm getting annoyed at is how it seems that it's ACCEPTABLE to release a phone with these issues.
All good points guys. I'm going to wait it out. This phonw is snapper than the nexus, and that will be the ame as epic. So it will pay off for me to hold on and wat for the development community to do what samsung probably will not. At least its not a moto phone right? We wouldn't be getting any updates tell we rioted on there building...

Nothing is perfect. If it were then everyone would buy the one perfect phone and there would be no competition. What do you want people to do, march on Sprint and Samsung and say. Samsung tear down this wall of ****ty product development. Or maybe have some common sense and look at the big picture. It is a cell phone, mind you a very expensive one, but a cell phone nonetheless. Look at the EVO, the screen is Capped at 30 FPS and it is just horrid, I understand you are pissed about all the cell phones and such, mostly the quality control. How did Apple miss the antenna miss-hap on the iPhone 4? Epic 4G's upload speeds are shoddy, at least this can be fixxed with a software update (hopefully!), and also the EVO's screen cap, they say they are looking into it. It seems you are out to get the world and just genuinly pissed at everyone and everything, so there will be no convincing you otherwise. But man, it can't be healthy to be so upset about something fairly arbitrary in life. And I understand your view on the GPS and Upload Speeds. They are unacceptable, and I will be making a phone call to Sprint AND Samsung because I to believe that we should be getting more for our buck, but I also believe these can fixxed and addressed accordingly. I have had an HTC Hero, I love that phone, but I also got it a year after its release so I didnt have any problems with it, I like HTC a lot and was going to buy an EVO but got sick of waiting. I think the wait times for those phones are just insane, then I saw the epic and I really like Samsung products so I picked up my Epic and love it. Because of the physical keyboard there is some give and it feels more cheap but I realize this is due to the fact that it needs to give (the keyboard cant be to tight is what I mean). Some say this is not acceptable, I realize it is needed. My point is that phones arent perfect, and I get irritated but not so upset as to swear and just be genuinly pissed.
All I have to say is stick in there and just have fun!

Keep Epic or Activate Evo?

Hey guys, I am a launch day Evo user. I really loved my phone but I lost it after some time. I went back to my Pre back up phone for a little while.
Last week Best Buy had the Epic for $125 with 2 year upgrade so I thought I'd try it. Well here I sit with the Epic and honestly I'm not impressed with the 4 rom options I have. I feel like the Evo had impeccable support and a great community. The Epic just seems like a joke.
Well now I have a brand new evo and a week old epic. Which should I keep? TIA

I didn't mention that I love the Epic screen and the HD video decoding.
I wouldn't base your decision on the 4 ROM options currently available for the Epic. I would guess the dev community is waiting for Froyo to get down to serious business. Having said that, the dev community for the Evo is going to give you a lot more options even in the long run. If that's your primary distinguishing factor, the Evo should be your choice, but I would expect the dev community to pick it up for the Epic after Froyo is released.
Samsungs support sucks plain and simple. Case in point, the Froyo debacle. We're right around the corner for Gingerbread and Samsungs top phone line still doesnt have a current OS. If its taken this long to get froyo imagine how long it'll take to get Gingerbread. Theyre always one step behind.
Yes the screen on that phone is ridiculous and Id love to have it but Id rather have a better OS and access to new apps. Let alone the dev community for the EVO is HUGE and one of the best Samsung dev's is running an EVO and building for it.
I have said this before and now I'm saying it again because my opinion hasn't changed. The EPIC has a fantastic looking display. But it feels cheap. Now someone once didn't know what cheap feels like. So when your walking around in Vegas and a smoking hot prostitute walks up and says she is $2,000 and you pick the lady in the alley for $50 bucks that is what cheap feels like. It also felt awkward to me for some reason. If I had a choice it would be the EVO.
Well, since you seem to be basing your decision on what the people here say... I say, go with the EVO.
But in reality, it's up to your own personal preference.
If customization is what your looking for, of course the evo. U could deal without hd decoding and if u want a pretty display just turn ur brightness all the way up lol. I love my Evo thats why u should continue to rock wit. Best HTC phone out.

The dev community for the Epic is sad compared to the EVO but yeah I'm sure they're waiting for froyo to get things going
I know other phone have support but I always buy a HTC phone usually has way more support from the likes of XDA
Was it just me? When I went to the Sprint store to compare the Evo to the Epic in person, I thought the Evo screen looked better. To me, the Epic had oversaturated colors, and I could see a dot-matrix like dithering effect on the SuperAMOLED screen.
It was most noticeable when browsing the web on the Epic; when I looked at the grey parts of the UI of the browser, I saw little dots and dithering everywhere.
Even though the scrolling and video was noticeably smoother on the Epic, the dithering of the screen bothered me so much that I bought the Evo.
I don't like the epics look just seems like a girl phone.

The sAMOLED screen used on the Epic is far from amazing. It has a blueish hue all over like it came straight out of planet pandora(Avatar). And text isn't anywhere as crisp as the evo.. Look closely and you can see thousands of small dots all over the screen.
Colors are nice but unnatural and over-saturated.
sAMOLED = Overrated marketing gimmick

Not so entirely accurate but we all have our own opinions on the subject the sAMOLED screen is nicer but it lacks a high enough pixel count to make it worth anything I work at sprint and I play with the epic all day and when I go home im not upset that I have an EVO its only 64000 colors compared to 16000000 but im not butthurt when I have hdmi out bad ass roms and as much support as I could ever need

What do you expect. They make toaster ovens, refrigerators, washing machines..... and phones. I'd say, from a support standpoint, they're probably stretched a little thin.
The galaxy s series of phones are going to receive the update directly to gingerbread most likely bypassing froyo where the EVO will not receive a second major update to gingerbread it happens only once in the lifetime of an android phone having said that; the EVO is better. STILL.

I would definately agree with everyone except one thing. The new Nexus S is confirmed to be a Samsung device. Once this happens there is going to be a flurry of developers working on the Samsung... So as far as community support and customization I think the Samsung could be there shortly with this new Nexus...

I ditched the epic.

This is not a bash thread. I owned the epic for roughly 4 months. It is a very good phone. Reason I dropped it was due to it felt cheap. The phone was pretty loose concerning the slider. Also I never used the keyboard. The amoled screen is nice but I needed a bigger screen. So I switched to the evo. And from what I can tell during normal everyday use is that its just as fast. I don't game and I know the epic is better for gaming. I still think the epic is a damn good phone. Just sharing my experience. Also even with gps turned on so far the battery life on the evo is a little bit better. It does not get hot during web browsing like the epic did.
Im still here though. Been here since the epic launched and still glad to try to help other if they need it.

My only complaint with Samsung is the software. They make awesome hardware, though. I think they do it on purpose because if they matched a software engineer to eke out everything from the hardware, you wouldn't really care about buying a new phone so much.
Even though Samsung sucks at supporting their Products, it'll be hard to go to any inferior screen.

Not sure how you can get better battery life on a stock EVO. The hardware in the Epic is simply more power efficient than the EVO, it's a fact.

Love the epic...agree the slider mech sux....
Ive never seen a problem with the sliding mech. Matter a fact I also have a moment and the intercept and those mechs are fine as well. I don't see how they're bad.
Anyway At this point jumping to the Evo isn't a bad idea at all if you want to. All of this "Epic is just a better machine" means squat when it's not even updated with an official Froyo yet. It's like having the most advanced yatch in a desert.
I for one love my epic but the second something esle comes along. I think i'll be leaving myself. Unless the device that comes along is also made by samsung. Then no thanks.

Well stock 2.2 battery life so far is great. Stock for stock there pretty close honestly. The epics display eats a ton of battery.
Also another thing I am noticing. On the epic I used roam control due to no sprint signal at work. If I left it on automatic the epic would lose signal, the radio would then reset itself 2 times before it would go to roam. So I used roam control to just roam only. On the evo it seemlessly switches between home and roam without completely losing the radio.

No it doesn't. Its actually much more efficient than the Evo's.

Agreed. The Tegra 2 LG Optimus looks pretty appealing, if it gets the advertised battery life. Wonder if it'll come out for Sprint.
That said, I do play some Super Mario now & then on the Epic. The keyboard + Game Gripper is nice for that. I can't do the screen controls, too slow.
I love the Epic to death, but Samsung support sucks.
To the person mentioning switching ... HTC shift.
I know a few buddies who went from the epic to the Evo. Both good devices. Sprint kind of limited.

Evos a great phone. I had both the epic and the evo, switched back and forth for awhile before deciding in the Epic. The epic IMO is quicker, but the development on the Evo may have changed that by now, idk. I will say that my evo always had better battery life than my epic. Same apps and same usage, both with the Evo on 2.1 and 2.2. Battery isnt a big deal to me personally tho since I always keep a spare battery. Enjoy your Evo. I personally miss the development compared to the epic, but im hopeful that that will changer soon. If you end up not liking it, sell it. I sold mine for twice what I paid. My wife just sold her second evo for $550 cash off craigslist.

I've had a person on Craigslist practically begging me to switch his 1 month old Evo, for my epic. I have been really torn between what to do. I really like this phone, and it is only gonna get better when 2.2 offically releases and the source code drops. I think I would regret it if I traded and it turned out the epic is being pushed beyond what any other phone has done before performance wise with the release of the source. T-mobile just got their release for 2.2 today, so hopefully we are not far behind (ya I know, we are on CDMA).
Whoa.... Vibrant got an official update? I didn't see anything on those forums...

The epic is my first samsung. I always have HTC from the ppc 6700 to the evo. I switched from the evo. Even tho I do agree the epic feel's cheap, but it does have better hardware than the evo.
Deal breaker for me was the camera, I was Surprised how crappy the evo was to take pic's, but at least the epic sux's less, it's actually pretty good.
Development is slower, but it's still gets plenty of love. I for one don't plan on flashing every other day.

If its the release that I think your speaking of. It was for T-Mobile (UK) not T-Mobile (USA). I thought the same thing once I read about it, but read more and its for the UK.
I have both the Epic and the EVO. I love both phones, but I like the EVO a bit better. I'm sure my reasoning is totally different from others (as expected). I would love to compare the two with 2.2, but for obvious reason I cannot. I'm VERY tempted on rooting my Epic finally. Battery life (for me, as I cant speak for others) have been great on both. But again, everyone has their different uses on their phones.
Well imop, I wouldn't of down graded... When they come out with a better phone damn near every 6 months. I would've stuck with the Epic till something better came out ( like the dual processor ) thats coming... But if you got-it like that just to buy 500 dollar phones because it feel cheesy ( And I agree ) then you made the right decison...

In my opinion, I think the Epic is a great phone, the only complaint I would make is the battery life. Then again I use my phone constantly and run many tasks at the same time, but I'm sure emulators don't help either lol. As for the slider, that made all the difference when debating on buying an epic or evo. Even if it is a little loose the qwerty is almost perfectly spaced and is probably the best one i have used on any phone (and I have gone through a lot). As for the software we all knew that Samsung sucked at providing it, but thanks to hard working people there are plenty of ways to get the newest android versions through ROMs which don't take too much work to use.
Personally I don't plan on changing my epic until it can no longer support newer android versions, but that's just me
Here is the link, 1 of out of 2 I saw today for T mobile customers getting Froyo for their Galaxy S phones.

[Q] Should I get the Epic 4G?

I'm still in the market for a new phone, and had my heart set on the Epic from the start. However, when I started delving deeper into the different phones, I started feeling apprehensive toward the Epic.
Why I want it:
Video/picture quality seems better than the other phones I was looking at
5row QWERTY
Non-smudgy back plate
Good stock SD card
Super AMOLED
Why I'm apprehensive toward it:
It's running 2.1 and people think Samsung is abandoning the phone
Ideally, I wanted a 4 or 4.3in display
To get 2.2 and faster speeds, I'd have to use a ROM -- I have no idea how to do it, and I also don't like the themes most of the community ROMs have.
The other phones I was interested in were the EVO 4g, the Nexus S, the Droid X, and maybe another Galaxy S phone.
So, my question to the Epic 4g community: How do you like the phone? Have you tried any of the other phones I've listed? Am I going to get shafted by Samsung and never get a 2.2 update, or is it just as easy to flash the leaked 2.2?
I lovemy epic. Greatest phone I've had. It does everything I want. I got the epic to future proof myself.
Itsvery easy to flash the leaked froyo. You don't even gotta be rooted! Also, theleaked froyo is bascally a release candidate, being almost complete but still lacking little things like bluetooth audio out.
If those are the phones on our short list, get the epic. When samsung finally releases official final froyo, those phones will have nothing on the epic.
If you can't wait for froyo, then a5least get a new dualcore phone so you can be sure you won't be left behind

Agreed. The epic is absolutely fantastic. Even on 2.1 it's vastly better than the evo, which my girlfriend has. The nexus s however looks great and if that was on sprint it'd be a toss up for me. Don't listen to all the nay saying going on right now. Samsung easily had the best camera, screens and processor combo available for the current gen. Once you go oled it'd be hard to go back. I just recently flashed the new trulyepic 1.2 rom and imo, that's the way to go right now if want froyo. Runs fantastic.

Well the first question I'd have for you is what carrier are you looking at? Because you just listed a bunch of phones in the OP that are on different carriers. As far as the Epic is concerned, I love it ... it has a LOT of issues, including Samsung's Froyo delay that you mentioned, but it's still one of the fastest phones out there (with a kick ass GPU mind you). Again, it depends on what you need. If you don't need QWERTY, then you might want to look at the Evo as that is one of the best supported phones on the market (in terms of the dev community).

The carrier isn't important to me. It relies solely on the phone -- although, I think Sprint has one of the cheapest plans.
If trade my epic for a nexus s any day... The screen on both if my epics became loose after weeks and I harshly use the keyboard anyway

I guess it really depends on what you are coming from. I was a die hard blackberry user.... *throws up a bit* came directly to and specifically waited for the epic after seeing several inferior android phones but knew it was where I wanted to settle once I was able to dig deeper helping a few friends mod.
Point being if it will be the first phone of this caliber, I think you will love the epic and there is no reason not to in most cases as the phone is blazing, couple it with some of the mods from the devs here.... it will be sweet. That being said, the same would likely apply to most of the other phones in your list.

Only if you want a keyboard. I think that's all the Epic has over the Evo at this point. Yes it's faster, yes the screen is better, but.. Samsung support is terrible, while 2.1 runs fine and there are 2.2 leaks its still a sorry state to be in for a "flagship" phone.
IF you're interested in Roms.. go with an HTC. While the Evo is running a 98% functional CM7 and MIUI, and (Insert popular rom name here), the Epic's (while the developers are all awesome! This is NOT a knock) are more or less just customizations and ported applications with a breakthrough here and there such as EXT4.
Samsung is absolutely ridiculous "#neveragain". The keyboard skips letters, the GPS is moody and only works when it wants to, updates are pretty much MIA. Yes the epic is a little bit faster, with a more colorful screen, but at what cost.
Thanks to the Skippy keyboard I've become a professional on the onscreen keyboards and am highly considering a Evo off of Ebay while I can still sell the Epic for more. Maybe that gives you an idea of what it's like to own a Samsung.
</endrant> All rants aside... it's not a bad phone by any stretch of the imagination. Samsung is just better at products that don't need much support after release... like TV's...
The epic (galaxy s phone) has the best diplay and fastest GPU on the market as of posting this.

If anyone cares

Was checking the best buy website today and the Sprint Nexus S phone now has an add to cart button.
When processing the purchase it gives an Estimated Arrival: 04/18-04/21/2011
I opened a chat with a best buy rep and was told:
you : Is a release date available?
Tech: The date is on 4/18/2011
Just an FYI for those who care.
I just chatted with a Bestbuy rep and she said that if anyone pre-orders it and is with a different carrier they will be eligible for the $125 rebate that Sprint is offering if it is done before the 16th.

Yeah of rather have the epic over the nexus s

I'm holding out for CM7 on my Epic. I'm happy with the Epic for now. It has everything I need and some things I don't (keyboard). I'm not really looking to get back into Samsung unless it is a Nexus because its pure google. My girl wants one so will get one for her and get rid of her Epic, but as for me I agree about holding out for later this year.
Epic 4g> Nexus s 4g
only benefit is that its pure google and that chip oh and gingerbread
but i like my epic hardware keyboard better then those things
im happy with froyo and besides if people do but this phone it may make it easier to port new Android versions and stuff like 4g working on CM7 and what not.

also with all the fixes we have for the delay i am actually enjoying typing on it especially with my new epic i got yesterday, hardware is so much tighter then my old original epic.

too me, i think the epic has some of the best hardware and is the only top of the line phone with the hardware kb and for a keyboard phone i think it is so sexy and thin
compared to the moment, the tp2 tp1, i think a lot more people like having that keyboard, all my friends that have galaxy s variants hate me cause i have the hardware keyboard.

mind telling me why you didnt get the evo if you like thin phones?

I did have the Evo originally and it's still sitting in my drawer in the event I need a backup phone.
I switched for 3 Reasons.
The extremely poor GPU in the Evo.
It's weight vs. the Epic (or any SGS)
The direction HTC is going in.

i will be picking up my nexus 4g the day it comes out, why? i am going to be stuck in a contract for 2 years with it. there is no doubts in my mind, the sgx540 in the SGS lineup is hands down the best phone gpu on the market (check glbenckmark.com) in terms of overall benchmark gpu scores the nexus s is 4 slots down from the ipad 2 (you know that new dual core tablet thats been crushing everything in terms of speed) so as far as i see it i have a choice between the epic or the ns4g. the epic is a decent enough phone. i love hard ware keyboards, but i want upgrades for 2 years... ask anyone on the nexus forums if they regret getting a nexus device. im willing to bet 99.9 of them will tell you they love having 2.3.3
i couldnt care at all about nfc (yay non scannable qr codes... woopie..) but its more about the simple things. i very rarely run any stock rom, most of the time is cyanogenmod, i congratulate the devs on trying so hard to bring it to the epic but its still got a bit to go. i guarantee the nexus s 4g will have an official repo/build within a week of cm7.
now whats the worst part about nexus s 4g? the camcorder.. its locked at 480p due to hardware limitations, but i can get over that as i dont use my phone as a video camera. no sd card slot? nah ive owned cell phones before they used microsd, and i own an ipod.. so im kinda used to the whole concept of being stuck with a size, besides refer to above point.. no video means less space taken up by media. no i would have to say the worst part about getting a nexus s 4g is knowing that with gb out and hc being held off for tablets only.. that ice cream is a bit off and that means its gunna be a bit of a wait for me to get my next dose of android medicine.
P.S i know i cant be the only one hoping that moto gets skipped on the next nexus device and lg gets it

I have this dumb habit of getting the cooler (in MY opinion) and more unique thing when I have a choice between it and something a little less cool but better supported. I own a Zune instead of an iPod, a Mazdaspeed3 instead of a WRX, I used to have an HPI RC car instead of an Associated RC-* that was gas powered instead of electric, and an Epic instead of an Evo, etc.
On one hand, I have never once wanted to kick the phone across the parking lot like I did with the Hero, but on the other hand, the Evo has more accessories that can be bought in brick and mortar stores, more custom ROMs including a more functional CM (much love, you guys really picked a whore of a phone to port to) and more fully functioning root apps.
I know in my heart that if I did get the Evo, I'd be kicking myself for not getting the far more powerful Epic. In this upgrade cycle I think I made the right decision to give Samsung another chance. I still don't trust them to the level of HTC (started with them back in the Titan days) but if they can make a hot-rod Google Experience phone then I'm definitely on board.
If anyone cares.
