I have just installed Dropbox on both my PCs and on my Desire. This is a great way of synching files between 2 computers without the need for emailing them to yourself or continually copying them between computers.

For the Andriod version search 'Dropbox' in the market.
With Dropbox on your Andriod you can access files from your home PC without having to actually have them installed on your device. Never forget a file again and save valuable space on your SD card!
How did I ever manage without it?!
If you install keepass on your android and pc and save the file to the dropbox folder, you can have a synced pc and phone password app.

The dropbox for android app is a bit useless. It only lets you upload certain file types. I was trying to upload a zip file. Why not just allow any file to be uploaded instead of showing you that silly menu of images, videos, music or text files (which didn't even work)? For the other way round, it is useful yes.
There is a work around (forgot it...) but yeah I agree... though it's only a beta, had to be expected.

My thoughts exactly. Sorely requiring updates. Basic rar, pdf, txt and such files don't even upload. Nor did vids with mine, after 2 hours on WiFi, the file size was still 0 KB. There's no obvious way to link to someone over Android for them to download the aud/vid (not stream, which it defaults to). At the moment, I'm only using it to manage already uploaded files from my PC/laptop, and to retrieve them from the phone.
As I've posted in previous threads, I've been using this app for just over 2 weeks now.

ya, dropbox app for android pretty much sucks, but you can download Droidbox from the market, which allows you to upload all kinds of files, even the ones in the cell memory

This isn't anything ground breaking but it might be something that someone has not thought about doing to their Xoom yet. You can easily turn your Xoom into an FTP Server through a free application. And then get an FTP client for your computer. Then use your computer to upload and download files onto your Xoom over the local Wifi or Internet. File transfer between devices is really fast and works very well. I have a video tutorial running through the basics on getting this working both on your Computer and on your Xoom.

Dropbox is cloud based. Your information is saved on a remote server where any device that supports Dropbox can download from it. So you have to upload it to the cloud from your computer, then download the files to your xoom.
This type of direct FTP transfer is similar to a USB transfer. There is no intermediate storage space, like a dropbox, you are directly transferring files from your Xoom to your computer or vice versa.
I personally use both. They have different functionality. If I want to quickly transfer a file to my android device, I use FTP. If I want to store a file so I can grab it later from any of my devices, I use cloud.
grab an app from the market called Websharing.
It allows you to transfer files, wirelessly, from an android device/to a computer and vice versa, all through a web browser..
very handy for transferring stuff without a wire...
FYI, all of the decent file explorers for android have this feature built in. No need to download another app.

Agreed. I was more or less throwing the idea out there. But there are many options and applications both for the Server and Client.
What I like about this option is that it uses such an age-old-tried-and-true method of moving files.
Nothing weird, ****ed up, magical about it like USB on Linux that dosn't want to work 90% of the time
please try wifi explorer available in the market.
I use SwiFTP server on my Xoom & DroidX. The I just FTP files to and from my devices with Filezilla. There might be better ways but this works just fine for me.
With as fast as the USB data is on the xoom (like a movie a minute, if not faster) i dont see why you would want to do this if your already at your computer. If your out and about then yeah, that's cool.
I've done the same on my Nexus One for ages.
The idea is that this effectively gives you ability to push files onto the device wirelessly without having to go and find it. And you don't actually need an FTP client - in Windows, at least, Explorer (not IE, but the stock file manager) can perfectly well handle ftp://... if you type it in the address bar. If you also assign a name to your phone on the router, you can use that instead of IP, so you don't have to look it up on the phone.
Also note that we're talking about running an FTP server on the phone (exposing /sdcard), not connecting to other servers out there. "All of the decent file explorers for android" are FTP clients, which is quite different.
Yea, there's multiple ways to go about this. I just use an app called Samba Filesharing from the market. It just makes your internal storage visible on the network as an SMB share. Works really well. I've also started to use AndSMB to browse my home FreeNAS server as well so that's another option I suppose.
I actually prefer awesome drop or dropbox(when it is working right) but nice thinking outside of the box

hi, i've just got my iconia and I am also new on the Android world. A couple of things I've noticed about the external SD card that maybe somebody could help me to understand.
1.- when I hook my tablet to my windows 7 laptop, I get to see the internal memory on the win explorer but not the external card, so is this normal or do I have to look for more updated drivers on my PC?
2.- with the external SD card on I get to see my files on an android file manager and I get to open any file individually by getting the "select app for opening this file", but this is time consuming so I am wondering if my stock lumiread, gallery, multimedia player have the current limitation of only reading the content from the internal memory. If so, what free alternatives do I have to replace stock apps?
A couple of answers
First, if you install File Manager HD, you won't need to tether your Iconia to your laptop any more. In the app, open the 'menu' and touch 'LAN Connections'. Your Windows PC will show up as an IP address. Make sure to change the IP Address to a computer name (long press, rename) so that next time File Manager won't have to search for it every time. You will be able to transfer anything on the tab to the 'Public' folder on the PC, and vice versa. Depending on what folders are shared on the PC, you will be able to access more on the PC.
I keep my music on my external SD card in a folder named 'My Music'. The stock music/multimedia players found them with no problem.
I haven't tried moving any books for Lumiread to the external SD card, so all I can suggest is to look at the file structure and duplicate it on the ext SD card, copy a book into it (a new one, or move an existing one) and see if it finds it. I don't see anything within the app to set search/storage directories, but maybe it will scan everything like the music apps do.
Have fun with you new Tab. The more you play with it the more you will understand Honeycomb and it won't seem so foreign to you. It does pretty much everything every other OS does, just a little different way.

Thanks Ken, I downloaded FMHD and will try it soon. I also though about reproducing the lumiread folder on the ext sd card but no luck, so probably a future update on the app will fix that. I tried this as well copying the pictures folder (and also renaming it as 'My Pictures') but the stock gallery just won't see the image files, is there any chance you could see if you get the same results? I have not tried yet on the music stock app. Again, thanks for your help, it is great to find nice people on the web with similar tech passions as I do

I use Quickpic from the Market (free) since it lets you choose which drives/directories to scan.
Here is what you do.
1. Create the My Pics directory on the External SD card with File Manager HD, put a few pics in it.
2. After installing Quickpic, start the app. It will display everything it finds on the internal SD Card.
3. Touch the Menu button from the main screen.
4. Choose SETTINGS-INCLUDED FOLDERS-ADD
5. Tap the double dots at the top of the list, it will display all the memory devices attached.
6. Tap EXTERNAL_SD. All directories on the card will be displayed. Press OK.
Now press the 'back' button and you will see your pics that are anywhere on the External SD card.
All I did to get the A500 music player to find the music on the External SD card was run the NemoPlayer app and open the music. Once I did that the regular music app found them, too.

Don't quote me on this, but I don't think so. From what I have seen and heard so far it is only connecting to Windows shares. I don't have an Android phone to test with, so can't swear to it, but I know it doesn't see an iPhone, so likely won't see a Mac either.
Anyone else been able to connect to anything but a Windows share? Let us know if you have, and what app you used please.
I have several questions that hopefully some of you could answer for me.
1. I tried to put some .pdf's on my phone via PC cable. I placed them under "Download" folder. But they do not appear there. Other .pdf's which I have downloaded with the phone are there, but the ones I copy there via PC do not appear up.
2. When using google maps, is it not possible to set a destination or target by using the map, and without having to actually know the address? Just like dekstop google maps "From here/To here"
3. Is it not possible to navigate by only using the GPS? It makes no sence really to require an internet connection as I have saved parts of the map in use for offline use. I tried the navigation but it wouldn't find the destination.
4. I would like to set "Tasks", but I could not find a proper way to do it. When I do it via calendar, the reminder is not a proper alarm (just a small ding or so, very easy to miss). Id like an alarm similiar to the watch alarm.
5. I've read several methods to root my phone. Which one is the easiest and "cleanest"? And a way to allow me to un-root my phone right after. Would this be a good guide: http://www.howtogeek.com/115297/how-to-root-your-android-why-you-might-want-to/
And should I unlock the bootloader?
6. Does the phone not have the stock capability to record sound? And to record a phone conversation? I come from a flip phone, and those did. Do I really need an app for that?

I. Send the .pdf's to your email instead. Very easy. Or save them to your sd card.
2. To set a destination jurt long press where you want to go and a menu will pop up. From the menu you can choose route or navigation. You can then input the from address.
3. You can navigate using just the map - follow the blue line- without a data connection as long as you input and download the from and to adress before you swithch of the data connection.
4. I do not use tasks so much but the Google calendar works for me and the reminder is loud enough. I even get an email with sound as a reminder.
5. I can't help you here. I have a Note II and see no reason to root…just yet.

^Since he can't answer 5, I'll try. Firstly do NOT use a toolkit. They may be the easiest way of rooting, but if you run into issues (and trust me, if you take advantage of root you probably will at some point) a toolkit won't help you at all. Take the time to do it manually, so that when it comes to the worst you'll know how to sort your phone out. If you look in the stickied threads there's definitely a full guide somewhere (I think in the N4 General forum).

6) No, it's not possible without having to install an app. If you wan to, I suggest you to install Hi-Q MP3 Recorder. The Lite version should be enough, unless you want to record 10+ minutes. I don't have a clue about recording a phone conversation.

Yes they appear in my phone "Download" directory when I look at it via Windows Explorer on my PC. Maybe they need to be put in another directory and not "Download"? Like videos go into Video. And pictures into DCIM/Camera
Slightly disappointing in regards to the navigation. I guess I'm SOL if I go outside of coverage area . I mean I'l have the map and GPS location, but I'l have to manually navigate, and keep looking at my phone while driving...

You need something that can decode and display PDFs, i.e. some sort of PDF viewer.

Yes but some PDF viewers require you to put the PDF files in a specific folder. For example, adobe reader will only "see" files in Download/Adobe Reader but you can change settings so that you can search your PDF through a built-in explorer.

If you use a file explorer to try and open a PDF, then if you haven't set a file type association, the OS will ask you which program you want to use to open it, then you can choose Adobe Reader. It doesn't matter if it isn't in a particular folder.

On the phone, when I go to downloads (the only location I know off where I can view PDF's), apparently it uses Quickoffice to open those PDF's (the one I donwloaded). As I mentioned it does not see PDF's I put there manually via the USB cable from my PC -> Nexus 4 via Windows Explorer.
Just to make sure there isn't any confussion, I can see the PDF I put on my phone in Windows Explorer. But when I use my phone, that PDF will not show up in my "Download".

So move the PDFs to a different folder and try again. All I know is I can view them using Adobe Reader in any folder
And if it still not working download adobe viewer and try with.
At last, you could download a file explorer app such as ES explorer and open your file with it, it will ask you which app do you want to open the file with

The Nexus 4 quickoffice is just a file viewer (it doesn't even have an app icon), so you'll need to use another application to locate your files to open them in Quickoffice.
I recommend using Astro or ES. I've used both and absolutely love them.
Obligatory Sales pitch: There's also a file manager built into the Quickoffice Pro app (and you can connect cloud accounts too) - It's available for $15 here, and it supports PDF annotation for Adobe 5-9 files.
yep that was the problem. I have installed ES and now I can access my phone files just like on my computer (why wouldnt this be standard?)
I have also installed adobe reader, so I could found the .pdf file too via that app.

Quick side question: I have set-up an email account using the "Email" built in app. However, it changed some privacy settings (stuff like being able to change phone settings, etc) and I clicked accept. Now I would like to review them. Where would those be found? I checked all options in the "Email" app but couldn't find anything.

I think (and mind you this is all my own thoughts through observation/reading news), Google is working towards a life in the "cloud", so storage on the device itself kind of defeats the purpose. there's Drive for file management and gdocs, Quickoffice for when you need Office, Google Play Music, Books, Movies, etc.
You can review app permissions under Settings>Applications>All, then select the application you'd like to see the permissions for.

3: Google maps uses internet to calculate the best route to your destination. While you can view your location offline, any searching does not work - in other words, the actual addresses are not stored in your phone. Only the "picture" of the map is.
4: you can download some app (any.do is awesome), or set the calendar notification sound to something longer. It will still be only a popup, but it will "ring" for longer.

About navigation, as soon as your phone has calculated the route you can turn data off. As someone have said, Google Maps use data for calculating the fastest route, but afterwards only GPS is required to track your position.

Unfortunately, Android doesn't offer a free offline navigation system like Nokia did (OVI maps was great!) but there are some paid alternatives in Android.
I bought Sygic (http://www.sygic.com/en) and it allows you to download all the maps onto your phone and navigate without internet. Maps for Germany are about 700MB. If you are in the US for example, you can just d/l by State.

Doesn't Google need internet to recalculate if you zoom in or zoom out?
I'm looking for something like this: https://www.pushbullet.com/. It requires Android 4.0 or higher, so this itself won't work, but I'd love to have a one click send-to-nook app that I can use to send stuff from my laptop without a cable (especially for pdfs). I was never able to get Gapps working, so emailing myself won't do it. Anybody know of anything similar? Thanks!

Update: I tried the app and I like how it works...but: when I transferred a book into the internal My Files folder it did not show up in the Library, even after a refresh. Under the My Files tab it did appear but could not be read. So I tried a transfer to the My Files folder on the sdcard. That showed up in the Library right away. Not sure if the process can be tweaked, but it's worth looking at more closely. It may be worth noting that ES File Explorer has an ftp interface (news to me but I found it) but it's not as user-friendly as the WiFi Transfer app.
If you have a dropbox account you can use dropsync instead of the official app, it can sync entire directories so it works much like the desktop client.
However, it doesn't do direct over-the-wifi transfer, so perhaps that's not what you're looking for.
