[Q] Android 2.1 Browser crash when trying to open bookmarks - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I use a Defy with T-Mobile US Android 2.1. Everything worked fine until I started having problems with the stock browser. It starts fine, opens my home page. But when I select Bookmarks from the menu, I get a FC message "The application Browser (process.com.android.browser) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."
If I install Skyfire, I can view my bookmarks, so I guess the Bookmarks file is not corrupt.
Any ideas?

Please help, anyone? Is it file permissions problem? Is the Browser apk corrupt? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Finally found a solution. Using ADB shell, navigated to /data/data/com.android.browser and deleted all the files in that folder. All my bookmarks are gone, but at least now I can create new ones and access them.

I had the same problem.
I used a program to manage favorites, and I found one with a symbol.
I changed the name using only letters, and now everything works again.

flash android 2.2 it is better than 2.1

On March 23rd, 2013, my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 began to act differently. In a few days, most of the apps would not open. I would get an error message: "The application ________ (process com.android._______) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. Force Close" This "crash" happened with the Browser, email, Kindle apps. I did the factory reset. Did not help. I then did the root process: Got the download target screen, opened OOdin3, selected PDA, chose Quens_P100_EF17_Rooted_PDA and it successfully "passed". It did not solve the problem. I assume I must have a corrupted OS, but that is just an educated guess.
Anyone out there got a solution? Thanks. John

Can't Preview in Gmail

FIXED!!! SEE END OF POST.
Using the latest RC30 mod from JesusFreke, everything works swell (cache to sd card, autorotate, multitouch, etc).
However I can't preview anything but .txt files in gmail! If I try to preview a .doc or .pdf file it crashes (Gmail has stopped unexpectedly) every time.
Not sure what is causing it, I believe it should be calling HTML Viewer and then maybe doesn't find it? I can view things with HTML Viewer though (txt files through ASTRO, etc).
I recently installed Linda File Manager as it adds a plugin to the Browser that enables the downloading of any content, however I've removed this app (and ASTRO) but haven't seen any results. I also reset the "defaults" on pretty much all involved apps.... At the moment I can't view pdfs through gmail and I really need to for work.
Any ideas?
Thanks
hey did you find a fix for this?? im experiencing the same exact thing....
concerning pdfs I had the same experience...
I noticed that my test license of jetcet pdf had expired. I uninstalled, reinstalled...
and it works again.
I am on JF 1.4.1 RC8
I fixed the problem by loading a nandroid backup from the previous day. then i opened gmail and when it asked me what default viewer i would like to use I chose HTML viewer
although it gave me the option of setting ASTRO instead. what i dont get is, why didn't the problem go away after i reset all programs to default and uninstalled ASTRO? mmaybe i should have restarted or something.
im on a stock rc 30 so im guessing id have to get root with one of JFs modded roms before i can do that nandroid? the jetcet program solved the pdf issue but im still force closing when trying to preview docs....html viewer opens independently but not through gmail...really annoying!
i would suggest clearing your defaults for gmail.... also root gives you nandroid yes but yu also need the sdk to flaah the backups. use mybackup as well!
no defaults are set....i guess i have to root to get it to work...
My problem came back! I uninstalled ASTRO, rebooted, and it is still here. No defaults to clear.
Using JF's version of RC33 now.
Also: you don't need root to reset defaults, but if you know how to do it via CLI, tell me! I can't fix it and I am afraid that if I go back to my old backup, update to RC33, it will come back!
getting really frustrated with this...im on a stock rc33 now and i still cant preview docs with html viewer through gmail....i have no idea what to do...i've reset the defaults and nothing?? does anyone have any other possible solutions?
thanks.
Still having the same problem.... I thought it was astro but it wasn't... what do we do?
Yeah, I don't even have Astro installed and it's having this problem. I have Linda File Manager and UnZip installed and that's about all I see that might be interfering...
Not only can I not view PDFs through Gmail, but I can't view any attachments at all.
I hope we find a fix for this...
Hey maybe it's Linda! I did have that installed a while back. I'm gonna do a nandroid backup and the reflash and see what happens.
Well I reflashed (finally got time) and the problem persists--- although I didn't install Linda. Astro is installed, but since you don't have it installed, it must be something else.
Very frustrating; it takes an hour to rebuild my phone (I could just re-flash the backup, but still) and I really want to see this problem resolved.
OKAY I FOUND WHAT CAUSES THE CRASH!!!!
It is an app called download crutch/download crutch lite.
It is a useful app, lets you download files from the browser that it might not recognize (ie zip files).
Anyways uninstall it, then delete the gmail storage/gmail settings from the app uninstaller--- then search for a .doc or .pdf file.
worked for me.
if you DO NOT have this app installed, then I have no idea. This worked for me on a clean install!!!
thanks

com.android.mms force close now

Something happened to my over the weekend. I found it had reset and kept resetting on the loading screen. I took the battery out, popped it on and turned it on. It made it to the home screen but all the apps I had stored on the SD card would close unexpectedly. It looked like ext2 partition crapped out or something as none of those apps would run. So I restored a backup from Nandroid and everything was working again EXCEPT for my SMS/MMS.
Whenever I go into messages, it crashes with a "force close" prompt stating com.android.mms closed unexpectedly. I'm thinking if I could clear all the messages I had save that would solve the problem, but I have no clue where they're stored.
Any advice?
Found what I needed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2976069&highlight=messages+stored#post2976069
I deleted the DB with the messages, all is well.
same problem here,
clicking "sms" pops up an error msg "com.android.mms ended unexpected"
I have not found any .db files yet :-(
Hello,
Did you deleted mmssms.db or some of "PART_XXXXXXXXXX" files too?
Thanks!
Deleting the mmssms.db file
For no apparent reason my phone's messaging app suddenly started force closing. After multiple reboots, even taking the battery out while phone was on, changing the language settings, and even doing a data factory reset, nothing worked. Found this post and deleted the mmssms.db file, now messaging app works fine, tho I lost all the old messages. That's ok, I had all but the last day backed up to Gmail anyway. So, just delete the database file.

I have the same problem. Did you permanently delete the database or is it still there? Cos I tried to delete the database throught root explorer but it still remains altho it has deleted all the messages saved in it.
any news on the com.android.mms subject????? I feel very frustrated with my android and i looked everywhere on the internet and can't manage to fix it!
A possible fix
Here's what I did that fixed mine:
I think the root-cause of this error occurred from restoring old messages. There must have been a character/corruption somewhere that was screwing everything up.
Please note the following: I'm using an Evo 4G, running gingerbread-evo-deck-1.2 ROM. I realize this is a G1 thread, but this came up first on google, so I think it would be most helpful here. I was getting the error as described when using the "Messaging" app.
What I did:
Terminal Emulator
su (allow root if prompted)
rm /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
Menu > Reset terminal (probably an unnecessary step, but it's what I did)
home screen > remove battery while running
wait 20 seconds
reboot
I don't know why removing the battery that way works. I did try force closing the "Message" app and it didn't work. I realize now I probably should have tried to figure out how to kill the underlying framework, but oh well. I'm not going to try breaking it again.

com.htc.bgp force close [(ACTUALLY) FIXED 04/29/2011]

EDIT: After studying some logs, and struggling with this issue for some time, I am happy to say I have finally figured out why this happens, and how to fix it.
The issue is with the calendar, which is why what is written below would work for a short time, before the problem would resurface. If you navigate into the calendar settings, you will see an option within Calendar View Settings to "Include Weather". What is happening, regardless of whether this is checked, is upon the gps turning on, and in set intervals afterward, the calendar tries to check the weather. When it does not find the proper apk, the com.htc.bgp message appears.
How To Fix
The files that need to be replaced are WeatherProvider.apk and WeatherProvider.odex (WeatherProvider.zip), which I have attached below for convenience. Simply replace these files using the method you prefer (adb, terminal, root file browser), remembering to remount /system as rw, then fix_permissions and reboot.
Alternatively, I made a flashable version (com.htc.bgp_fix_flashable-signed.zip), which you need only flash from recovery and reboot.

I recently started getting notices that com.htc.bgp stopped and needed a force close. Though it seemed not to affect anything, it was annoying.
It happens when one removes the sense apps (though I have not narrowed down exactly which ones).
To fix this, go to settings, applications, manage applications, then clear data in Calendar, Calander Provider, and Gmail.
Thank you! It was starting to really annoy me.
EDIT: It's back.

Came back on me too. Cleared delvik as well. I may have to try and track down all the weather app crap I removed to stop it if no one can figure out a better way.
According to Elixer that process is started by ConnectToPCService. Hope that helps. I no longer get but I'm back to stock with all HTC junk intact, just Sprint crap removed.

How do you "flash" from recovery & reboot

i flashed this on a desire hd running leedroid 3.0.2 but i still get the FC
din clear data after flashing
note: i used a no sense script but left myhtc and htclocationservice intact
problem parsing package
i had downloaded the said files but when I tried to install the files,it says problem parsing the package..how to fix this?

Mail Program keeps quitting.

Hi community! i have a little problem. since a few hours i am not able to open my drafts-folder anymore. if i choose folder->drafts my mail programm quits with following errormessage:
"The application Mail (process com.htc.android.mail) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again"
-- -so i was searching for a fix for this problem. one possible solution was to delete all data over application-manager (settings->manage applications->All->Mail->Clear Data).
it worked only as long as i saved another message in draftsfolder.
-- i also tried to use ROM Manager's option to "Fix Permissions". that worked a few times for other problem, but not this time.
-- i was using DL.DesireZ.v3.3.final.nand by dandiest and yesterday i flashed to new version 3.5. i thought my problem was gone, but its still there..
i dont know why this is happen even if i flashed a new version..
thanks for any suggestions
greetings
EDIT: excess message database over root:
Ok, i did it. i've found a *.db file in rootsystem. /data/data/com.htc.android.mail/databases/mail.db
in this file is all you need. accounts, messages, settings etc.
with an explorer which is able to access root its possible to view and edit this file. i've got my message back (at least the content), now i will try to look what keeps my mailprogramm quitting.

How to deinstall HTC Skins?
i now know why this error happens to me. i now started gparted and formated my sdcard (fat and ext4) and flashed again< the error was gone. haha
so i started to set up my phone and reinstalled my applications. to be sure i tested every time i installed an application my drafts folder.
after install of a HTC Sense Skin called "rEVOlution" from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=801928 my mail programm brings the same error as before when i want to access drafts:
"The application Mail (process com.htc.android.mail) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again"
so for me this skin causing this error. i know have to know how to deinstall it?
edit: yes thats it. if i change back to default htc skin i am able to access drafts... weird.
solved
to remove the skin and get rid of this error (in this case) you have to delete following files and folder:
/data/data/com.htc.skin.revolution
/data/app/com.htc.skin.revolution-1.apk
then restart. done.
a quote form the original thread.
Issues: There might be FC with gmail, then just clear your gmail user data in app settings.

com.google.process.gapps

I own an Acer Iconia Tab A500. I am currently on...
Android version 3.0.1
Kernel version 2.6.36.3
Builder Number Acer_A5001.141.07_com_Gen1
I rooted the tablet and ran into a problem. I was in my Titanium Backup and erased a file by accident. Now, I have the com.google.process.gapps error occuring. I read multiple websites trying, what feels like, everything under the sun. Here are some things I tried...
Erasing gmail accounts
Downloading files
Factory Reset
The problem is that I did a factory reset and if I would have come here first I could have used my file explorer to reinstall the gtalk.apk. Now, I cannot install the file explorer, because of factory reset and feel that I am at a loss.
Here is the good news! I downloaded the Acer A500 driver and I am connected with ADB. I just need someone to help me with some commands for manually putting the APK file back on my tablet. I seem to be struggling with getting this done and any help would be greatly appreciated!
I have checked, to the best of my understanding, all the links the XDA, but to no avail.
Would somebody please be willing to help me?

The command you're looking for is "ADB PUSH"
Type that in the command window (in the same folder as the ADB command), and it will give you the usage syntax, but it will be something like:
adb push gtalk.apk /system/apps/
That destination might not be the correct place for it, but it probably is.
You will need to be rooted, in SU mode, and have system mounted as RW to do this.
I don't see why you can't install a file explorer though... That FC shouldn't stop you installing one from the Market... Doing this copy would be a lot easier with something like eStrong...
Thanks for the help floatingfatman!
Maybe I am doing something wrong! I am a sponge and wanting to learn more and more about these OS. Everytime I go to download an app I get an automatic fc. In fact, it boots me right out of the market.
Just for information sake I am rooted and know how to get into su mode. Can you help in one of two ways? I am not real familiar with getting into RW or if you I could help me get file explorer, astro, and proper apps that would be great.
I am not good with using ADB. I tried doing what you said, but failed when it came to getting into RW.
Any further help would be greatly appreciated.
To mount the system as RW (rewritable, this is not a folder, it just makes the folder so you can write files to it), do this in a command window.
Code:
adb shell
su
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 /system
Then, in a different command window, use ADB push to copy the file to /system/apps/. Finally, unmount system as RW.
Code:
mount -o remount,ro /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 /system
That should enable you to copy the file to your device, but I make no guarantees that it solves your problem.
Thanks again floatingfatman!
I did everything you told me to do, but to no avail! Would you suggest me trying anything else?! Everyone seems to be saying that I need to be get this apk file because something within gmail is missing.
Any more help would be greatly appreciated!
Ryon
Well, did you get any errors? I'm not saying that /system/apps is even the correct place for that file, or even if its the right file, btw.
These are the three errors I receive...
Upon start up I receive...The process com.google.process.gapps has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
If I try to download an app from the Market I receive...The applicatin My Apps (process com.android.vending) has stopped unepectedly. Please try again
If I tap on the the download app I get process android.process.media has stopped unexpectedly Please try again
Any help or moving in a direction would be great appreciated. Thanks for al lthe work so far!

At this point, it's probably best for you to reflash with a clean ROM. Vache has just posted a clean 4.010.22 that you can flash with CWM...
That sounds great, but how do I flash a rom when I can't download any programs such as Titanium Backup, etc. on to the tablet. Don't you need these to be able to flash?
If you could help me with the process I would be greatly thankful!

Try going to the market website on your PC. Log into your Google account.find the app you need click install. And it will show a list of devices you can push the app to.this has worked for me. With a issue I had in the past with a app crashing the market.
Thou I do know in not so smart with android.
Acer so should have a complete wipe reinstall recovery.but ibguess if you do not root your device these things can't happen. Mess with the win directory in windows can mess you up as well.but I can fix windows.not android
Hey FloatingFatMan,
I just personally wanted to say thank you for sticking with me through this process. You truly were a God send for me! I downloaded the Rom and did what you said. I am now back in the game and can download apps from Android Market.
Thanks again!
