Help - My phone sounds like a record player! - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hi Guys.
I have been in this forum for a while now and have found it hugely helpful. I have never needed to ask a question but this his me truly stumped.
I am running Andriod 2.2 with the latest version of OCLF. I use launched pro and and have a clock widget from beautiful widgets.
On friday, for no reason, the clock widget suddenly stopped working. There was a message telling to remove and replace it to get the updated version. I so did this and for a while it was fine but then the same thing happened. I decided that i couldn't be bothered to fix it there and then i so deleted the application and carried on with me day.
The reason i bring up this uninteresting fact is that at the same time, my phones ability to produce sounds has taken a turn for the worse. I listen to a lot of music on my phone and there have always been the odd stops and skips in songs, its annoying but i have gotten used to it. Since friday the stops and skips have been replaced by a juddering (like a static sound over the top of the music). THis is not just limited to music playback either. I get the same juddering when my text message sound goes off or a call comes in and the juddering is present on both head phones and the phones speaker.
If i am honest the juddering *Sounds* like its a hardware problem like a lose connection or a crossed wire, but since its in both the speak and the headphones i dodnt see how that could be the case.
It is almost like the phone is struggling to keep up.
I have also noticed increased battery drain during this time too.
I appreciate that this is all a bit vague but any help would be fantastic!
Thanks

I see two options:
- install System Panel App and let it monitor CPU usage. This could show the offending process or app which is eating CPU
- or bite the bullet and do a factory reset.

Thanks for that.
I have been monitoring my phones stats for the past few hours and the CPU usage is hovering around 50% with just the music player running. Is this normal?

It's not normal... Maybe you have some corrupted file or smthing... Try a factory reset. If you backup your contacts, calendar
... It's not a lot of work.

Thanks. It seems to be the MediaServer service that is eating all of my resources. When there is music playing its consuming 25% - 30% of my CPU.

Music player problem... Music skipping and clipping...

Hey guys,
Has anyone noticed that when playing music in the vibrant that their songs skip or cut out for a split second like 3 or 4 times a song? This is driving me nuts as I use my phone to play my mp3s in my car every single day and its very noticeable. I have tried other players like mixzing and same thing...
I have owned a bunch of android phones and haven't had this problem on any others.
Thanks...
Oh I should add that I am stock 2.1 with ryanzas oc lag fix but a friend of mine is still stock and experiencing the same problems just not as bad.
Ive noticed the same thing. Mostly when a notification or call comes in but sometimes when nothing else is happening. Yea really annoying.
My phone is completely stock except for being rooted.
It also happens when wifi is turned on when wifi is off it doesn't happen
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I've never had this problem but I have experienced "the beat" being extremely loud and the lyrics being too soft, its a hardware problem, if the headphones aren't plugged.in the exact way, this will happen. Perhaps this is what is causing your problems as well, also this should be in the Q&A Section
I get a small skip every couple of songs using MixZing. I have Wifi off, so that's not the issue for me. I don't really notice it. Is your music on the internal or the SD card?
I have tried both the internal and a couple external memory cards...i actually swapped my vibrant at t mobile today to see if a new one would help...the new one does it but not as much. However given how much I use my phone for music its enough for me to return and go back to my android hd2...i like this phone better over all but music is pretty much number one cuz I am a musician... I tried lowering everything on the eq to the bottom...didn't help... Seems like an issue like you might get streaming pandora, where its running out of buffer so to speak...weird.
Wifi on or off and other stuff like syncing off doesn't help either...also have a task manager that will give me 200 mb free ram that doesnt help either.
sorry for postingin the wrong section btw
I would think this is fine in the General area.
fliplovin', when you talk about the EQ, do you mean in MixZing? Because the EQ in MixZing tells you it will cause high CPU usage, so I would turn that off completely.
no , there is an equalizer in the stock music player under settings... it allows you to not only do preset values, but also custom channel per channel... it also has effects like arena, and wide... etc..
i have tried EVERY setting possible... i am now about to flash a custom rom and see if that helps...
one thing that seemed to help temporarily was to use the system manager and close everything leaving me with 200 mb available memory and turn the eq all the way down, however, that made my max volume quite a bit lower... not exactly what i want to do.

You ever get this figured out? its been pissing me off really bad as of late. I want to keep the phone stock, but i would still like to know if flashing to a new rom helped
the only time it's skipped for me is when installing apps etc..
This same thing happened to me when I had Weather Widget installed. It seemed that every time it would try to update, the music player would skip. Using fancy widget now and never had the problem again
Music player and Google Listen both stutter a bit for me when playing a large file (over 5mb or so) and it tends to stop after the first 30 seconds. This is when wifi and gps are turned off and my phone isn't doing anything.
I did a clean flash today to JFD, then JI6. I noticed while listening to music on the way home from work tonight, there was no skipping in MixZing. I'm only doing the "/data/data to NAND" hack.
Do any of you have battery widgets/Accurate battery mods?
They can cause skipping and choppiness throughout the entire OS.
I had the same problem. I had world Analog and digital widget installed. I read on the T mo forums about some clock widget causing it so i uninstalled mine.
No more problems with the music.
I also use "Zimly" for audio player.
For Acurate battery info i use "MiniInfo" its not causing any problems.

Task Manager kills Live Wallpapers

So I am currently running the latest version of Fascinate Community ROM and whenever I do a "Level 2" ram clear whatever Live Wallpaper I'm using gets killed, resulting in a black screen behind my desktop.
I can although change to a different Live Wallpaper and go back and the original will work.

Am curious why you would be doing a lvl two cache clear enough that it would be a problem?
As am I. If you are using it to save battery life and attempt to fully close programs there are countless ways of doing this which are easier and better.
These is a reason it is killing your wallpaper..... you are telling it to.

Yes I am telling it too, but on my Mesmerize ROMs it restarted right away with my launcher.
The reason I do a level 2 ram clear is because level 1 doesn't close any applications. Plus, some apps run as services and I don't want to have to go into Services but to end them one by one.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
The problem with that is that those services just start back up. There are some that I think only load on boot. Why not just uninstall what you are trying to close instead. Wiping the cache isn't exactly a normal way of closing apps.
Think of ur phones memory as a chalk board.. ur phone write the programs down one by one.. till it fills up.. then it erases the least important app.. and writes over it.. u do a level 2 wipe.. its trying to write with both hands to catch back up, then most likely you hit home and it has to throw a 3rd hand it doesnt have to try to open ur launcher.. last thing it thinks of is ur walpaper. being its least important.. u shouldnt be doing wipes like that.. its not nessisary.. just close open programs if ur having problems.. actually hurts bat life more than it helps
I'm not saying I'm doing this very often but at times i have to.
For example, about half the time I unplug my headphone jack from whatever I'm using a random song starts playing. It will not stop, the music player doesn't show up as running and a level one clear doesn't stop it, level two does. The music will play behind anything else I do i.e. phone calls, other music, even during shutdown until it actually turns off.
Also, battery life isn't the reason I do it, I am currently only using about 43% battery medium use running unplug for 12-17 hours because of my undervolt settings. I understand the concept of clearing the cache, it's just as I stated there is a need from time to time and it's incredibly irritating to not have a live wallpaper after stopping the ghost music.
Also, as I said this (ghost music and live wallpaper problems) never occurred on my USCC Mesmerize ROMS only this VZW Fascinate ROM (Community ROM V1.2).

I'm not suggesting that it is the most likely possibility but it could be a physical problem with your 3.5 jack. A short in the jack can cause some funkyness playing songs and other audio. While back I had the og droid which suffered from this. If I moved the cord at all mp3s, podcast, pandora would all go crazy. Had to get a replacement. Since then I have tried to avoid ever plugging anything up to that jack when it is in my pocket. Bought a blue tooth to 3.5 adapter to protect it.
Again not saying that this is your problem, just that it is a possibility to be aware of. Concerning the issue with the music playing, not the wallpaper ofc.

Yea I think this is the problem, a buddy of mine still has the og droid and says the if he moves the jack around music will start and stop. I think it's partially hardware and software because android has the ability to pause when unplugged and to resume when plugged back in.
The live wallpaper problem is only a temporary problem until I get that fix. I think I'm gonna call samsung for a replacement under warranty because my screen also has burn in and that is covered as well.

So I decided the other day to take a look at the running services while the ghost music was playing and noticed Winamp was running and as soon as I stopped it the music stopped.
Update: I uninstalled Winamp and have used an 3.5mm jack for music unplugging and re-plugged in with no problems.

Files can't be played (so far music and photos)!!! & Rapid decrease in battery!

Hi, ever since yesterday i been having a strange little problem; All my music files and photo/Videos are gone from my music player and gallery apps!.. I check the SD cards (both internal and external) all the content is still there except it wont load it! even when trying to access it with a different app (such as Play by AOL, Amazon MP3 player, Winamp, etc)... also when trying to switch my ringtone or notification sound it clashes! I tried rebooting the phone, downloading apps to re-scan my SD card and so far no luck...
another strange thing that stated happening yesterday also (I think it was around the same time, it sure seem like it) my phone started draining the battery really quickly. it gave me about 5 hours of life from 70% to 0%. this is waaay to quick! it usually gives me at least twice if not triple this!...
I have also notice that phone starts getting really warm when trying to load the music and gallery app...
has this happen to anyone else? or any suggestions? would really appreciate some helps... thanks...
Did rebooting help anything? I had a weird thing just the other day where all music and my ringtone were playing at really high speed. Rebooting fixed it, though I wonder what the issue was. There are programs that log cpu use by apps and things. For the battery issue I'd try one of those or go into your Battery Monitor in settings and see if you spot any apps that are eating all your battery. System Panel also works. It will keep a week long log of your cpu usage among other things.
You do anything else right before this?
Install any apps/p-roms anything like that?
Try a battery pull?
Try watchdog for a cpu monitor, it can notify you when an app is using excessive cpu.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
no, rebooting didn't help. I tried it multiple times. Tried pulling the battery leaving off for a couple of hours. Nothing
OK, i tried looking at the battery manager and it said that Media was taking up 35% of it!!! I tried force closing it. And after that some of my music became playable. But still it was very sluggish.
Unfortunately I did update alot of apps the previous day. So it may be attribute to one of them... but my phone is pretty much stock. Only with side loading enable... so no custom roms.
Thanks for your feedback, ill keep trying a see what happens and of course post my results for future reference..
PS my battery drain at an astonishing rate!; from 80% to 0% in less about 3hrs...

MUST, KILL, MEDIASERVER!! /angry face

I have done a ton of reading about this mediaserver process, but nobody seems to have a definitive fix.. (.nomedia file etc etc)
It is ALWAYS greater than my "google play music" app usage or "poweramp" when I play music and sometimes it goes rampant and is the highest usage... (see pic)
I know the phone up time is pretty good for that charge level, but the killer is I only listened to music for about half an hour..
It just grinds my gears that this relatively unknown process is all but useless to my needs (poweramp has it's own media library), but cant be stopped..
Is anybody able to shed some light on how to stop this process, even if it is a temp disable while poweramp is running or something?
Anyone else sick of mediaserver feel free to chime in..
Oh, and to make matters worse, my friends Galaxy SIII can stream BT music all day long and mediaserver uses about 3%...
Both his phone and my phone seem to have the same "keep awake" time, but his uses almost no battery.. What gives?
My N4 is stock 4.2.1 rooted and i have no files on it apart from one album in the music folder, no google music sync, no ringtones, no pics.. Nothing..
I had the exact same problem on my Nexus S too..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980575
It seems reasonable that corrupted media files is the cause. The phone might have scanned the damn file(s) over and over.
This might help.

Edit: I also suggest changing the music player.
Try Apollo

This (slightly outdated) version works better and less buggy than the one on Google Play.
Less features, less bugs.
I have the same worry, I think it uses too much juice for about 30 minutes of music. I use the default Google play music app though. Hopefully someone can help

1) "Mediaserver" is allegedly using up a huge amount of battery
2) Your battery's at 39% after 29 hours
...these two things don't work together.
Here's what's probably happening: Android is misinterpreting something as being related to mediaserver alone when in fact it's only partially related or even unrelated altogether. This is probably caused by an app you've installed, but could just as easily be an actual bug causing Android is assigning too high a percentage to a small amount of real usage, that's all it is. In any case, if your battery has lasted 29 hours, you're not suffering from any kind of "battery-drain" condition.
IIRC, in Android the ability to request music playback is separated from the ability to actually play music for the purpose of allowing music to be automatically muted or have the volume reduced under certain circumstances (phone calls, voice navigation prompts, etc) and probably various other reasons people smarter than me would understand. This generic process that plays audio is called "media server". When your music player of choice plays music, it's probably outputting the audio via mediaserver for compatibility and usability reasons - so you see "Google Play Music" and "PowerAMP" down at a tiny percentage because they're doing very little to speak of as applications, while mediaserver is running continuously whenever audio is playing.
When an app uses a service, or a service uses an app, or a service uses another service, the "blame" for battery consumption often goes to the wrong place in this way. For example, you might also have "Android OS" being blamed for "Google Play Music" using wifi to stream music, and various other perplexing scenarios. You might have "Android System" at 50% battery usage when in fact Android by itself is doing very little - it's the things that work through "Android System" that are actually responsible.
Another good example is MX Player, which IIRC uses mediaserver in order to provide hardware decoding, but is still really the app to blame for that video needing to be decoded in the first place. Etc etc etc, bla bla bla.
What's your screen-on time? I'm guessing around 1.5 to 2.5 hours, right? You're doing fine. Worry less about statistics and more about observable reality.
TL;DR: Sh!t fewer bricks.
You know i got the exact same thing as you have except mine is "google service." In a way I'm kind of disappointed with this. I expected a lot better quality from Google. Especially when these things are running on stock straight from Google.

Thanks for the reply, and the information, but I still think something is not right... As I said before, ignore the long battery life as I have heaps of stuff turned off to try and investigate this bug..
I have previously played music all day over BT and had about 30% battery drain (70% left) which was about 60% mediaserver and 40% google play music.. This is perfectly fine for 5 or 6 hours of music playback... Google play music only.
However on this particular day for some reason I have 13% drain for 30 mins (21% of the 61% used) .. Something is not right.. I had not played music for the entire 28 hour period and mediaserver was nowhere to be seen in the usage stats, and then drove home with BT audio on, and BAM it's number one.. Using PowerAMP..
Perhaps the problem is with PowerAMP and how it handles the service?
Cheers, Tai
Bit of an update,
I ran the MP3 checker utility and found two corrupted, one of which was my ringtone!
I have since run the phone for two days and the mediaserver process has behaved itself and is just higher than the google play music app..
I still think that this needs to be fixed somehow, it shouldn't go pear shaped because one file is not 100%..
I got 2 days 10 hours on the last charge with over 1 hour of screen time and a few calls, dozens of sms's and emails, and music over bluetooth to and from work each day (3 trips)
Gotta be happy with that..
All right. Quick consideration. On my S2 there is a somewhat mediaserver that kind of drains the battery. The cause of this was the "sound when pressing" and "vibrate on press" (sry if translate isn't accurate) on sound settings.
In addition to that, make sure all vibrate and/or sound pressings on keyboards are disabled too.
Hope it helps.

First it was Google services, then Android OS, I got them both to behave, now it's Android Media Server, when I click on it, I do see Poweramp full unlock app there.
Not sure if it's poweramp though because a lot of people still say it isn't.
Any ideas?
If you're playing sounds at all it's going to be in use. It keeps your CPU awake to keep a song playing...
If you don't have any songs playing and it's awake, then it's bugged and you should reset the process.
Maybe I'm missing the point of this thread but it (this thread) seems rather off.
"Unknown process useless to my needs."
definitely need mediaserver to use your phone.

I thought that the process only scanned the phone for media, and wasn't needed, but now I know what it does.. I still think that it should not have this problem dealing with corrupt files..
This is the checker I used..

How 2 days??
I have all the location crap turned off and only sync email, contacts and calendar.. Other than that, my phone is stock (rooted)
The mp3 checker doesn't see my phone when it's mounted via usb, I assume you have to copy everything off the phone to your computer and scan from there. This could take a while.
I had a similar problem before. I posted a possible solution in this other thread.

First mediaserver, now the phone app?? wth.
I haven't even looked at the phone app today.
Having the same problem with Mediaserver, if I listen to a podcast on Doggcatcher I'm draining 15% per hour and battery stats show Mediaserver killing my battery. Listening to a podcast drains 15% per hour, it should hardly be draining anything. Simply listening to a podcast stored on my device takes more juice than browsing the Internet with the screen on, that's not right.
here's what i've done
# created a .nomedia file in every damn directory on the sdcard:
for d in `find /sdcard -type d`; do touch ${d}/.nomedia;done
#Then went through the directories which I wanted to allow Mediaserver to scan
#(DCIM/Pictures/Movies/Music etc...) and removed the .nomedia
for dir in DCIM Pictures Movies Music media subsonic; do find /sdcard/${dir} -name .nomedia|xargs rm;done
I'll let ya know if this changes anything.

[Q] Galaxy S5 + bluetooth cuts out during music playback?

I recently got a Galaxy S5 about a month ago and have been using LG Tones hbs730. While listening to music, whether it's streaming or on my device, it cuts out for a second or so. Sometimes it happens a lot at once and really kills the vibe. It almost sounds as if I was listening to music with aux headphones and I unplugged half way then plugged back in.. I have replaced the bluetooth with the HBS800's and the problem still persists. My Galaxy S4 did NOT do this. Any suggestions? I have tried just about everything. Thanks!!
Same problem with LG Tones HBS-750 fixed - sort of

I had the same issue with my AT&T S5 GM-900A and an LG HBS-750 bluetooth headset. Found the problem starts when the screen goes to sleep. I installed ScreenON just now and set it to the dimmest level. No more skipping. Unfortunately the screen does stay on, but it's a workaround. :fingers-crossed:
Just search the Google Play store for Screen ON

Yeah it's a common s5 problem. Put your phone in recovery and clear your cache that should fix it.

I just cleared the cache on my phone and rebooted. Using the stock music player, the music plays fine through the headset until the screen goes to sleep. Then it starts cutting out almost instantly. If I enable ScreenOn so it doesn't go to sleep or have it in daydream mode while charging, the music plays fine. Do you know of anything else we could try?

If you're rooted you can try installing Viper4Android, I think it has an option to disable Bluetooth low power mode which might be the problem.
Tapped It!
According to the update's bug fix list, this bug was supposedly fixed in the 4.4.4 update. But since that update, my bluetooth audio cuts out just as much, if not more. Wiping the cache partition doesn't help at all.
Is there another thread that discusses this that's more recent and has more than three people addressing it? (i.e. since the 4.4.4 update)

I've just switched from a sony Z1 to the s5 and noticed this issue with bluetooth in my car.
The Z1 was rock solid in the same car via bluetooth.
It seems the s5 gets drop outs when then screen is off for a while and i presume it turns some of the CPU cores off or something?
I have a g900F, there isn't a 4.4.4 firmware out for it yet? The Z1 was running 4.4.4 though and was OK.
i'm so happy that i'm not aline, not for you of course. Did someone find a solution? i also have the lg 730, and i also have sony z1, but i really can't use the 730 with z1, it was awful, and also have problem with the screen, so my phone company give me the s5, and i was happy , but i still have problems with bluetooth. Some tied another headhones?.
It is confime that the problem is because Bluetooth power?

I've got no idea what's the cause of this behaviour. However I pretty much tried every solution attempt that I could find on the net, except for rooting or custom ROM. Nothing has brought a solution for me, not even close actually. All actions taken seem to have no effect at all on the audio stuttering. Meanwhile my two brothers can play their music my home theater (which is what I'm trying to do) without a single hiccup for hours. It makes me think it must have something to do with a deeper problem. Bluetooth low power seems at least more likely to me than any other possibility, although that's highly speculative on my part.
I have been trying to get bluetooth audio from my phone to my home theater to work ever since I got this phone. It seems such a mundane task to me, yet Samsung seems to fail to fix this issue and I'm actually getting seriously pissed off at that.
When I contact Samsung support they seem to think this is a problem that is just on my phone and actually suggest to hard reset my phone and all that nonsense.
Meanwhile I updated to Android 5, the official version, but no change in this stuttering behaviour what so ever. And actually, audio to my home theater is one of the main purposes of this phone for me. The fact that I haven't been able to do that for many months now, well... That's a f**** sad situation.
And on top of all that, with the 5.0 update, I now get about 5 hours on a full charge (was getting at least 15 hours on 4.4.4). But that's another thread, I know.

But in that post they focus the problem not in the bluetooth but in the cpu. They claim that the worst (because may be more tan one) proble is the cpu profiles to save battery. So tire with the bluetooth path i follow this new one. After some test (with tasker) i change my cpu governor from interactive to performance and almost solve the problem, i have a little jump now and them, but nothing too anoying. I need more testin because having the cpu governor in performance all the time kill my battery too fast. But at least i can hear music again with my belove LG-730.

Well.. There's no changing the cpu governor without rooting.
A little jump now and then is still unacceptable for me. This phone is a cpu powerhouse so regardless of cpu governance or scheduling, this should work without any jump or cut out at all.
Are you sure it's not a coincidence that your situation has improved? I mean, with the cpu in power saving mode, normal audio playback without bluetooth should be pretty much equally problematic as playback with bluetooth. I've never had an issue with music cutting out without bluetooth usage.
I'm not sure of anything, at this moment i'm testing this, and without doing any other change i improve the quality to a level where i can use bluetooth again. Before i have between 3 and 5 jumps per song, and not little ones. Now one every hours or more and i thinks this ones are from other things, like gps and some programas that affect or bluettoth o music. From hear i'm not sure what to test next beside cpu, this one was my last bet before leaving bluettoth for ever. So any advice are welcome.

You shouldn't hear any jump at all, even when you are using the phone for other actions as well. Quad core CPU and 2gb memory really is far more than you should need to do all those things. For example, one of my brothers has a Samsung Galaxy S3 mini. When he connects his phone to my home theater he can play music, lookup soccer results, read the news, ... All that without any jump what so ever. Obviously that's the way it should work.
I still got a laptop with a Pentium 3 550Mhz, 512mb memory, win2000, .... It's able to do all these things and it's almost 15 years old. There simply is no excuse.
For what i read is not a hardware problem it's the saving battery profile for the cpu. So you have the hardware but android tell the cpu to go veryyyyyy slow so you save battery

Yah, you're probably right about the cause. But does that really matter, we're speculating anyway. The fact that ancient devices do this better than this modern device I'm using now is just pathetic.
yep you are right, its pathetic.

Mine does it even with the battery saver turned off. Makes no difference.
