[Journal] My Road to Becoming a Great Developer - Hero CDMA General

My Road to Becoming a Great Developer
Intro
Hello I am Kifno. I have had my HTC Hero CDMA for a short period of time and I've fallen in love with it and everything about it. I love testing out other developer's apps, tweaks, mods, themes, roms, kernels, etc. I also have recently gotten into the modding and tweaking aspect of our hero's too. Some of you may know me from my tweaked build.prop's. But I have decided that I want to be known as a great developer for the HTC Hero CDMA. I am going to keep this thread as a journal during my journey to becoming a great developer, posting what I have learned, accomplished, created, modded, tweaked, etc. that is making me one step closer to reaching that goal. Hopefully during my journey you all will appreciate some of my work for our HTC hero CDMA devices.

Developer for editing a text file values? Right, I wonder what programming that is? By the way, does Aosp know your editing his builds and redistributing them?

thats a lot of reservations!

I'M ON A JOURNEY TO BE THE GREATEST DEV FOR THE HTC HERO CDMA
good luck, we already have the best dev's for it.

I'm new to becoming a developer. My first piece of work is simple, editing the build.prop from other developer's roms. And I'm learning how to program and learn the c language and learning java so I can do bigger and better things for the HTC Hero CDMA. And as a matter of fact not only did I make a editing build.prop for aosp but aosp as of last 2 updates to his new gingerbread rom has implemented my editing build.prop into his gingerbread rom by default so I'm pretty sure aosp know's i'm editing the build.prop to make the hero better for the community. That is why aosp is keeping it implemented into his rom by default. Please be positive here I'm on a journey to become a great dev and all great dev's started small okay. Remember I'm NEW to becoming a dev.

Yeah I plan on sticking with the HTC Hero CDMA for a WHILE!

No need to be negative guys. At least he's going out and working for it. That's a lot more than 90% of people here can say. Most are too lazy to learn and want others to do it for them. Really can't believe that on xda we have at least two guys who who would actually try and discourage someone from developing. I think you guys need to check yourselves. Pathetic.
To kifno, goodluck friend and best wishes! I can't wait to see what you do!

Wow lets watch the negative.. Glad there are still people who want to progress the hero.. And he isn't taking claim of anyones rom he is editing the build.prop giving people some extra tweaks to make our phones quicker.. Kudos on your hard work kifno and there are some big shoes to fill around here and someone needs to do it.. I plan on trying but its hard to make time with life right now for me, so thank you for giving it a shot..

We aren't trying to be negative. Our point is that you haven't developed anything in reality. Just editing a properties in a file isn't developing, but it does take some knowledge to know what you are going to edit . Nonetheless, you are trying to become the greatest developer, but really you are in the 1st chapter of your C Programming book. It's going to take you maybe another 3 - 5 books to actually understand what's happening. Instead of striving to become the "Greatest" developer, why not focus on just becoming a developer at first

LOL....they started CM7 without your help, starting from scratch and to my knowledge avoided referring to your "work"
And from the looks of it, they've accomplished more in 2 days than you had in weeks...

noobnl has done more for the epic than most people on this forum have, and only a handful of developers have contributed equal or more. most of the people who post here and make roms simply theme a few files and call it developing. what you need to understand that even though they have cm7 booting, noob had cm6 booting months ago, that isn't the hard part. the hard part is getting the radios and data to work, noob did this with help from very few people, and it took a long time (because he largely did it by himself minus help from skeeterslint forcystos and a few others) but so far not ONE other people have managed to accomplish this task.
:middlefinger:
I wish him the the best, and also we don't know what happened behind closed doors, metaphorically speaking. So lets just leave it at this.

You probably shouldn't run your mouth (fingers?) without learning a bit of history, not-so-ScientificOne. As others have stated, noobnl has contributed much of the early work that current development is built upon...
noobnl, thanks for the work you did to get us this far!
Appreciate your work man. I'm sure your sweat equity will be beneficial to everyone in getting this off the ground.
Thanks for all the hard work you put into both the CM6 project and the Epic as a whole. Your efforts have gotten us really far in this game. Even for the stuff you indirectly accomplished, like gaining the attention of some of the more seasoned devs, so that we could get more stuff done.
You're definitely a great resource and this community is better for it.
I hope I'm as cool as noobnl when I grow up.
+1 thanks.

My post may have been a little harsh, but obviously you don't know what you're talking about. In regards to CM7, the team of Dameon and others aren't relying on what noobnl has contributed. In fact, who do you think this blog post was aimed towards?
http://www.cyanogenmod.com/blog/a-note-on-unofficial-ports-and-how-to-get-it-right
Dameon and others are trying to get it done the "right way".
It appears, to me at least, that noobnl is attempting (by starting this thread) to get some kind of credit for the work they're putting together, which is probably very little, if any. And if any, I'm sure he'll get the credit he deserves.
Sure, noobnl has done a lot for the community, I for one certainly appreciate it, but that's not what this thread is about now is it?
hmmm, so sounds like we have two dev-groups working on CM now because I'm pretty sure the recently announced group working on CM7 basically said straight up they had yet to even look at noobls progress bc it wasn't actually CM worthy and bc they started group up.
so using logic we can see that noobls 'transition' is to a different group. to bad he won't enlighten us on who that other group is. imagine that, half a statement that tells us not much at all and then some "look at me and what i did" statement, as usual.

sadly no, not really, however, i am one of the fastest learners you will ever meet. lemme see what you are working on and i can learn it within a day.
the only reason that i don't have any scripting experience is that i have not had a need to know it.
i have done javascript and other scripting languages for the web, but nothing with android at all.
as far as tweaking goes, there isn't really anything that i haven't modded, tweaked or completely rebuilt at some point. gimme something good and i can make it great. i have done extensive tweaking on another portable device that is not worth mentioning here (a**le i*od, gotta censor that foul language here)
edit: i won't be offended at all if you don't think you can use me on your team, just thought i would throw my name in there and see what happened.

X8 development - there is none

Sorry I do understand the devs are working hard but progress is slow
Okay, no offence...... But clearly you can't read, have you not seen the many threads to bypass the locked bootloaders. These threads have hard working devs attempting to make custom rons even with the difficulties at hand. I understand that progression is slow due to the lack of.devs but we are truly blessed to have devs like racht, jerpelea, doixnah, povanovn, artoseven (sorry if i missed anyone out, you devs are all included). The effort these devs have put in to make this phone a little better is amazing and i definately believe they deserve a round of applause. Not only are there workaround custom roms but there are modules which are made to help OC and add more features to our phone than Sony would have provided us. Furthermore devs are slowly finishing tweaks on cracking the x8 bootloader. These devs and everyone who has ever provided something to improve this phone deserve a round of applause and i think you should apologise for your gurtful comment, cos at the end of the day the devs are helping us

I think he means the lack of progress lately, which is somewhat true. I haven't seen ratch update his ROM in a while, and the 'SD card is safe to remove' still exists, and it's been around since the creation of custom ROMs.
Please note I'm not agreeing with the OP, just putting this out there.

If you look around all devs are focussing on kernel building and loading and behind the scenes activity, instead of posting half baked stuff they are posting tested and stable roms
Look at minicm its almost perfect, only one main bug and tethering feature is not available.
Don't worry and have patience.
And if some mod can close or move this pointless thread it would be great.

Kifno's Lessons

I would like to start teaching people about android so if you would like to learn from me about:
- Making Roms
- Scripting
- Modding
- Theming
Then please post here what you'd like to learn about and PM me as well and I'll send you a lesson every night or every other night about that category. You can choose all 4 or just 1. It doesn't matter I'm here to help you, yeah YOU!
- Kifno
I'd like to just understand more about all of the topics. Not to be a dev, but just to be able to communicate better on this forum about it. Like I understand digitals VMS os but always hated to work with unix, so I learned very little about it.. What is scripting ? what is meant by modding, etc.
Thanks Kevin, Ted O.

I skimmed up to the point where you said you blame the developers. Basically had to laugh at the sheer audacity of posting this drivel. If your story is actually real and represents your life right now, then you should try finding a different hobby.
Why don't you become a dev and prove you can do it better.... talk is cheap my friend...... imo our devs are awesome and we have tons of roms and themes..... and we have some great kernels..... we may not be as great as some other communities but we're a hell of alot better than at least 75% of the other communities......
Of course blame the devs who do this **** for free. That will obviously motivate them to keep creating roms.

Calm down, we don't have cm7 because our devs don't want to have to reinvent the wheel when 2.3 kernel source is coming soon.
Everything they are doing is guess and check, they are deving blind. With the kernel source to gingerbread they will have less work.
Why does the hero have CM7? Why does the motorola defy have CM7?
Because the dev's there know that gingerbread source will never happen for their phones, so they got to work and boy they had a lot of work. However, with the giant userbase those phones had they could spread out the work amongst a large base of dev's to finish it.
For us, We don't have as many devs, so such a task would be a huge undertaking for our devs. This may be a task our devs will have to face with Ice Cream Sandwich but with Gingerbread, Samsung has the potential to do 60% of the work for us by releasing the gingerbread kernel source.
So, Why make the effort when you don't have to?

Because the dev's there know that gingerbread source will never happen for their phones, so they got to work and boy they had a lot of work. However, with the giant userbase those phones had they could spread out the work amongst a large base of dev's to finish it.
For us, We don't have as many devs, so such a task would be a huge undertaking for our devs. This may be a task our devs will have to face with Ice Cream Sandwich but with Gingerbread, Samsung has the potential to do 60% of the work for us by releasing the gingerbread kernel source.
So, Why make the effort when you don't have to?

This is are hobbie not are job. Source is to needed to simplify things. Gb on the hero is a highly modified eclair kernel. Cause of this not all the gingerbread features/enactments work on the hero. I know this cause my spare hero is running gingerbread. In my honest opinion the hero runs better on eclair.
so ask your self this one question. You want a fully functional gingerbread experience or a hacked up one?
