<Sigh> I hate Motorola - Droid X General

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920804
Is even the lock screen from this possible on our phone?

Yeah.. I should've known better not to click that link. Anyone who knows anything though SHOULD HAVE KNOWN when purchasing a DX what limitations we would have over some other devices.
Although that does look pretty slick, Droid Incs are iphone wannabes, can't stand 'em.

Inc's are nowhere near iphone wannabes. I have both and while i love my X my incredilbe is still easier to use and hack. Title says it all especially after moto's blunder yesterday on the atrix page. Come on moto, you really arent working on anything and if you are it will probably mean a new developer device and not a fix for those of us working with the current ones.
read on for info if you havent seen it. http://phandroid.com/2011/01/19/motorola-locked-bootloaders-stay-you-can-go-elsewhere/

Motorola cleared up what that one, YouTube manager, employee said. It doesn't mean the bootloader will be unlocked, but they commented and it can only help.
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/01/1...bootloaders-looks-to-partner-with-developers/

If by "cleared up" you mean heaped a load of dung over it in an attempt to hide the smell of their previous ****ty response...
yep, they did that good!

Go here

And tell Motorola what you think about their locked bootloader

That's just the acer launcher. I have a file for the liquid metal launcher.

also. Incredibles are nothing like iPhones. They are sick ass phones. Anywhoo on the good side of things motorola either tweeted or said on facebook that they would be working towards making their phone developer phones again and marked the locked bootloader section on their support forums as "implemented"

The inc is by far the best phone on Verizon right now in regards to hacking and ROM's. Anyone who hates on it is, well, is a hater The X is a good phone in terms of hardware, but the inc community is simply awesome. iphone it is not.
Motorola is listening guys! It may not happen with the X, 2, but I'm willing to bet the new moto phones will be more easy to manipulate. They see how it will hurt them in terms of future sales.

I really doubt it would hurt much when it comes to sales since a majority of Droid owners know nothing of the phones true potential. Although that was a crappy statement to make on motorola's part. As a consumer it really makes me think twice on what phone I will purchase next.

Even though the average consumer wont be rooting and what not, I'm sure many of these average users will read the comments of all the Modders and be put off on buying a moto: phone.

g2 root--impossible?

i don't even have a g2 and in no way intend to disrespect any of the hard working devs. but, how many people are pissed off that there is no root yet? not pissed at the devs, but at the measures htc has taken to lock us out. maybe it really is a bug in the chip. what if it never gets rooted? how many people would be extremely mad and sell their g2? like i stated, i don't even own one,but have been into the scene for quite a few years. so i read the g2 thinktank everyday. part of me is always hoping i'll see that it was permanently rooted. but it just doesn't look good. i check everyday because i'll eventually be upgrading my phone soon. and i'd like to rest assured that if these measures are taken on future phones, that the devs will know how to hack it sooner.
anyone think it's never gonna happen? i hope it does. i'm just not used to seeing this being such a huge problem.
It will happen. Give it time. The world was not built in a day.
The phone is still very good even though it isn't rooted yet, and will become a better phone when it is.
I'm pretty much like you, I check the root thread multiple times a day. I really respect those guys.

People said this same thing about the cat and mouse games on the iPhones, Droid X, etc... See how long those lasted? A few weeks? A few months?
History has shown, given the time and determination, there is no consumer cell phone that cannot be hacked.
I hate that they lock us out of our devices, but they are appliances. This happens in the business world all the time. They do it to 'improve' the device by not allowing you to muff it up.
Either way, we will crack the protection mechanisms, or find overflow exploits, etc... to make it happen.
give it time. anything and everything can be cracked with enough time. plus temp root via visionary works great. We truly only need prem root for custom roms and themes

AFAIK, to date, the Droid X's recovery chip that prevents custom roms has yet to be defeated. Poor example there, I think.
True. The Droid X still can not load custom roms. I'm thinking we're probably going to be the same way. But there's no fun without Cyanogens mods. Ughhhh

Honestly, 80% of what CyanogenMod brings (aside from bugfixes and optimizations) can be accomplished with full root access to the system.
I think at least some of the Devs see this as a direct challenge to their authority. This is the G2 after all. Root will happen. Droid X comparison is apples and oranges, this is the sequel to the first android device ever! This is where we make our stand or all is lost.
Having stated the above I think HTC, G, and maybe even T-mo are watching this device. Maybe its just to slow down the Devs long enough to push 3.0 . G may try with 3.0 to stop Android fragmentation by offering a huge leap forward. I mean the G1 to G2 jump is mind blowing to me and it seems like a gift to us early adoptors of Android, I want root but the G2 is stunning to me even stock. Just thinking outloud.

People are seriously tripping here. If Android can be ported to the HD2 of all devices, then the G2 can get rooted. Even if it doesn't big deal, it may just be me, but this is the first time I've been satisfied with a phones performance on the stock rom. Its faster and more consistent than any phone I've owned.

This is the truth. I sat and thought hard about what really made me put CM6 on my G1 .. i came to the conclusion that my g1 just wasnt up to par with all of the newer androids. but now i am completely happy with my G2 even on stock. therefore i dont mind waiting for root or if it even happens.

I'm hoping that the Tegra 2 doesn't have the eFuse lock either.
I'm hoping that because Google is involved from the outset, like the Nexus phones, that this will be considered a dev device as well as a kick ass consumer product. But as a former Milestone owner, I'm going to be very wary of it nonetheless.
Moto just doesn't understand open.
It's sad what they did with the bootloader on the new line of Droid and the milestone. As my Droid one was so easy to hack it wasn't funny. But there really isn't to much I can do with my x. Although out of the box with a little adw ex my x is sweet. Although not quite like the ole incredible with miui

Um... You're supposed to prove these wild statements somehow, right? I played with HTC's new tablet last week, but forgot to take a picture of it too. Or was it that they confiscated my Dinc and unrooted it after they saw I tethered it for upload the video i took of myself on it's 400 million megapixel ffc? Get the point? I like you, just not that much.
And what the hell does playing with the device have to do with the boot loader? I'm pretty sure you will need a USB cable and at least an incredible to root it, aren't you?
I def understand where your coming from but i got to test the devices cause the motorola rep for my district came to my job with it.
And i had the physical devices in my hands so in theory i would've been able to test the bootloader
No i don't have pictures of me holding the devices so all i have is my word, believe me or not i got to demo it, i guess the next time he comes with the bionic i'll make sure to sneak a picture for hard proof

Engadget is reporting that the price at Best Buy will be 699.99, which is a marked improvement over the 800 that has been making waves. That makes it much more reasonable, but I want to know about the bootloader (aka is it locked) before I buy it.

At that price, it would be way to cheap. We're talking about state of the art tech that completely knocks the winds out of the highest price iPad ($799-$849).
Even though I'd love to buy it for $450, I'd be worried why is was so cheap.... $699 is OK. If I had to wish a reasonable price, I'd say $599.
Damn I was just getting lots of schemes to buy one with my tax money, then you guys have to mention the bootloader!
It might be too late for the Xoom Facebook spam plan though. If its going to launch in a couple weeks they are probably already making them.
Anybody know if any Dev's have said they are definitely going to develop for it yet?
The xoom looks very cool.
but i will not buy this if moto locked the bootloader.

Which do you beleive will have better roms?

Looking to upgrade from nexus one to either atrix or galaxy sII. They both have good hardware and it would be nice to have the bigger screen of the galaxy but it doesn't really matter to me.
I don't really trust Samsung with software upgrades and I have never had a Motorola before. I think what my decision is going to come to is which one will have the most custom rom development.
Anyone have any guesses on which one you believe will have more custom rom options?
Neither. Motorola still has the encrypted bootloader and Samsung just lies about releasing updates.
I haven't been paying much attention to it, but I thought they already figured out a way to root the atrix
That has nothing to do with the bootloader.
I would choose the atrix, only cause of the massive battery.

Problem is that you can be rooted but if the bootloader is encrypted like many Motorola's you cannot install a custom recovery to flash custom ROM's, you just have SU access being rooted.

Actually the bootloader isn't encrypted, but it does perform a signature verification on the files... so the end result is the same. No custom roms as it sits right now.

This is my thought as well. I won't get another android phone without community support. After watching Vibrant & Droid X development and their troubles I've ruled out both these manufactures regardless of specs.
I expect LG to be the most open of the upcoming android dual core models. It's just a guess though.
Most definitely NOT the Atrix. XDA should let that phone die... Hit them where it actually hurts with phone sales, rather than buying it in hopes to it being cracked one day.
The SGS II looks like the way to go between those two. Unless you feel like waiting to see what HTC ends up releasing.
As for LG, I have no idea. Never owned an LG phone before... The Optimus' bezel sticks out too much along the touch screen, so that'll probably be a deal breaker for me. We'll see when it actually comes out. Till then, it's a waiting game for me.

It's too bad that the number if people using cooked roms are a margin of error if the phone is successful for the normal consumer. The network perception will do 20x more to hurt sales than the locked bootloader ever will.
That being said, I'd wait for HTC to announce thier next gen (pyramid et al.)

Why all the Atrix hate?

Hi everyone!
Long time browser of these forums, but decided to join since I switched from my Iphone 3gs to the Atrix 4g.
Just a question, why so much hate for this phone? Maybe I'm totally in love due to the fact that I'm discovering my freedom on Android (well most of it do to moto/att locking some stuff) but I still think the phone is wonderful.
The only issue is I agree about the screen not being amazing like some of the other Android phones I've seen, but regardless next to my friends G2 and my girlfriends Inspire, my phone is blazing fast, has a pretty good battery (new toy syndrom I'm using it like a monster and It still has not died by the night time start at 8/9am put back in charger about 1/2am with 20% left) and the camera is fine for a smartphone.
I guess it just seems like a lot of hate and I'm wondering if I'm missing something that I should be aware of?
Take care and I hope to be more active in this awesome community.

The smart thing to do is sit back and wait for a few patches to hit or buy a phone that's been in the market for some time and has all the things smoothed out.

ill admit that i am trolling this site to get some of the feedback on the atrix. i for one would have thought it would have kicked as5 (meaning better reviews). i like reading the the good and bad remarks from users here. i applaude some of the honesty/personal opinions of people who like and didnt like it.
Cause many people (including myself) are from some previous flagship Android phones. While Atrix 4G is been described as "Revolutionary" product, some features are degraded due to Tegra2/Moto. This is where the disappointment come from.
The things that are holding me back
are the Moto blur and the locked down boot loader.
I still have my captivate but I'm itching to move up to the new dual cores. And I got sucked in with Atrix by the lap top dock. That turned out to be a real downer, 500$ for a monitor keyboard and a mouse....what are you insane?
I will wait it out and keep my captivate, maybe the galaxy s2 will make its way over here, and before it does I can read the board and see how people like it over their in Euro Disney.
The ability of running roms really came in handy on the captivate, since I have been running froyo for a long time.

Out of all phones I've owned the Captivate has been the most laggy. You shouldn't have to worry about undoing and redoing a lag-fix every time you want to install a new rom. The Captivate is an amazing device don't get me wrong. However the short time I've had the Atrix I've been very impressed. 2800 Quadrant on a stock phone? 37-38 Linpack?? NUTS! I'm sure that could change as I'm not sure if quadrant is optimized for Dual Core. But I've noticed absolutely no lag, the accessories are amazing, the screen is super sharp(although I think I still prefer my Nexus S screen ATM so far..) and hopefully we will be able to get a dual root (Android OS and Webtop) someday =) IMO Moto has done well bringing the first dual core to the states. The only perfect phone I've ever had was my N1, the Atrix isn't perfect but it is one of the best (most definitely the fastest) phone on the market.

We all hate what we don't have and excessively praise what we have.

I agree. We are chasing perfection.

Bootloaders not actually unlocked

The Droid X, Milestone etc bootloaders were not actually unlocked. It was a hoax. http://www.androidcentral.com/motorola-bootloader-still-encrypted-developer-comes-clean
I don't see why so many are willing to put up with this. There are plenty of other good android phones out there. As long as Motorola is going to fight this, there will never be a truly safe way to flash custom roms/kernels on droid phones, and devs simply aren't going to invest the time necessary to develop much.
::: Sigh :::
I've learned an important lesson, don't get hopes up so quickly :'(

Motorola is too committed to their bootloaders not being crackable. Just pick another phone for your next one.
disappointing, and we all know now not to ever trust nenolod again. thunderbolt here i come...
I think its horrible that some one thought it was funny that this happened. I know I am a no body to the android community but I for sure did an "unfollow" on twitter today.

That's my thought. I'm due for a new phone here shortly; it certainly won't be a Motorola.
@nenolod purposefully lied to us. http://desmond.yfrog.com/Himg614/scaled.php?tn=0&server=614&filename=l8sp.png&xsize=480&ysize=480
This is ridiculous. He cannot be doing this @&#( to us. I have lost all respect for this guy
And the thing is he said it was because people kept bothering him about the stuff. Well I never even heard of this guy until all this came out as im sure the case with most people, so why play this stupid "trick" on all of us?
Again, lets throw all of out locked droid x's at him. He shoukd be banned from android period

I would recommend a Galaxy S. The bootloaders are unlocked and it now has a functional CM7 version. Plus, nothing beats the Super AMOLED screen.
Yeah this was pretty lame, got my hopes up, so I just got a dinc for now until I can afford a new phone or get my upgrade.

I loved my Droid X when I first got it. Rooted it and had leaked Froyo running on it before OTA was available. After that there was not much more I could do with it. Bought a used Captivate on ebay. There are lots of custom ROMs and kernels to choose from. When September rolls around I hope there is a new Samsung phone available. No more Moto's for me.

Galaxy S phones are very solid, with a few mods, it will fly. Plus the bootloader is unlocked, if u are coming from the x, you will greatly appreciate this. I just picked up a thunderbolt and so far, i love it. Its crazy fast, LTE or not, and having the 256mb of extra ram really makes for a phone that never slows down, no matter what you are doing. My only complaint other than the battery being undersized, as HTC ALWAYS does, is the adreno 205, people with the mytouch or G2 will tell you its good. When voming from a galaxy s the GPU is the only thing that i dont think is better.
