sprint bloatware - Epic 4G General

just curious what you guys consider sprint bloatware? and what you consider good sprint software?

The only sprint software I keep on my phone is nav and football. And even football is going bye-bye after Sunday.

I classify all applications that are not detrimental to the operation/function of the phone and can't be removed as "bloatware/crapware".
Sprint NAV
Sprint TV
NFL
Nascar
TouchWiz
Amazon MP3
Games
Allshare
etc...
Don't get me wrong, I DO use some of these applications, but I would like the option of removing them from the system without rooting.
Personally, I feel the phone should come with vanilla Android. Then, phone manufacturer's should give us the option to download and install their applications from the Market.

It's been so long since it's been on my phone I almost forgot about them. I would say NASCAR, Sprint Football, Amazon mp3, and any game that is a demo only. Sprint Navigation(telnav) is actually pretty nice but unneeded since we have Google Navigation. Obviously this just my opinion and these apps might be useful to others.

call me noob , but i like Touch wiz , at first i didnt , but now its cool it grew on me, and your right allshare is crap , I absolutly hate it. I could never get allshare to work as it should with my pc , it woudlnt play any windows files or any video, they made me put pc share to be able to play some files

Any sprint app minus sprint nav. That one actually comes in handh

That's my definition. I like Sprint Navigation, and probably wouldn't uninstall Sprint TV. But I would still like the option to uninstall them if I decided I wanted to.
That's the difference between something being defined as a "value added pack-in" and "bloatware". I hope someday the carriers realize this.

well heres my thought on it
they should just clone bruce lee. that would solve all the issues with sprint

Bloatware:
1.Everything Sprint, Except the sprint updater and android extension which i dont know that this does?
2.Touchwiz Widgets
3.The regular android launcher considering launcher pro is simply the best and most customizable.
4. Asphault Demo (Seriously who wants to keep a stupid demo on your phone and waste space.
5.Amazon mp3, i mean its on the market if you want it and the one on the phone is probaly outdated. But this is crapware to me.
6. Media Hub: If you use it fine but again it is probaly outdated and is also on the market. I consider it crapware, waste of money to rent small screen movies or even buy when i can take any movie i have an convert it.
7.My files is bloatware., Astro is way better!!
8.Buddies now, another TW application. i dont like.
9. Email Client ( i only use gmail and have my aol accounts pop email set up on it.
10.Sprint mobile hotspot considering 30 bucks a month is rediculous considering we have a premium data fee already. I have mobile ap in replace of this
11.Qik= Sucky and outdated and is on the market. i never had any luck with video chatting very well, i use tango.
12. Youtube: The Evo Youtube is better!
13: All the live wallpapers: There are more awesome one on the market.
14: The Touchwiz Launcher: However i keep it so i can make my Mobile ap work and themes that use this framework.
Things i like that came with the phone:
Calendar
Calculator
Alarm Clock
Allshare
Memo
Music
Think Free office
Voicemail
Gmail
And any other things that came with the phone and arent listed here or on the things i consider bloatware.

A phone with android OS. Everything else is bloatware. If it is good software they want me to try then there should be a list of recommended software it should never be preinstalled much less preinstalled with no means of removal. I think good Sprint software are the plugins used for accessing their network.

Effectively, anything that can't be removed without rooting is bloatware..I personally don't mind if a carrier pre-installs bloatware..BUT it should have the option to remove it and add it any time..I mean its silly that you gotta reinstall all the "bloatware" just to update android officially via OTA...
I do not think "recommendations" to download from the market is the way to go as most consumers are average consumers...and if carriers did that it would make android sales worse in general..BUT they should give us the ability of removing them and re-installing them whenever we please without need to root...
As for the Asphalt demo...thats pure crap right there...ALL the Galaxy S come with free FULL version of Asphalt 5 available via Samsung Kies...and Sprint shafts us with a Demo preinstalled with no way to remove >.>

so in order to remove it , it must be rooted right? and from my understanding , cyanogenmod is the purest form of android ? sorry but sometimes hard to understand and see the differences between all the roms

You know the phones with the sprint id have the option to install clean which has no sprint bloatware. Kind of a step in the right direction.

Frankenstein is very clean with nothing installed. You can pick and choose which apps to install.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884075

All of it sucks to me except calculator, memo, calendar and gmail. TW grew on me too, but now I use Zeam and I can never go back to TW now. Allshare, buddies now, all the sprint stuff, music player...it stinks. Not that everything is bloatware. Some people find some of it useful. Just not to me.

For those that still want the Sprint NFL app, you send a text message to 7777 and put NFL in the body of the text message and Sprint will send you a download link.

[Q] Can I dual-boot?

I'm trying to remove all the additional stuff off my Evo I'm never going to use (don't give a crap about Nascar, thank you Sprint. At least the Instinct let me get rid of that app.) but I'm reading that the only way to uninstall is to root. I'm not asking about how to do that, I can use search for that, but I'm just wondering, apart from Peep and FriendStream (I think there's an app called Tweet or something too), plus the internal apps Android needs to run, which apps can be safely removed to free up storage space/improve battery life?
Particularly I was looking at removing FlashLite, Blockbuster, Sprint Navigation (like anyone uses that when there's Google Maps), and the Nascar and football apps. But I could see HTC/Sprint sticking some system necessity in those so you can't remove them without breaking something else...

New question: Would I be able to dual-boot my phone (say, CM6 and what it has on there now) without too much trouble? It doesn't sound like it'd be too different than having two OSes on a PC, on the startup screen it'd just ask which you'd want to boot...

You can remove all of those safely without messing up anything. I would recommend just flashing a ROM that has all of that crap removed already cause they usually take out more of that bloatware.

nahh you can take all of those out. Dont get rid of htc facbook or you wont have a way to sync contacts. (if that matters to you)
Okay, thanks for the tips. I've been eying CyanogenMod as a possible OS replacement, but Sprint isn't going to come and bar me from making calls or accessing their network, are they? (reading how Motorola almost bricked any Droid X running unauthorized software isn't helping)
edit: I do know to do a Nandroid backup before doing any of this, but can I set my phone back to S-ON if it has to be taken in for service?

Nope they shouldn't...
Yes you can. its not to hard to do either.
There is a zip flashable in recovery that will put you back to s-on. I can pm you a link if you can't find it. I think it's called unrevoked-forever-son.zip.
Okay another stupid question... In checking my version of hboot I managed to boot my phone into recovery mode. I pulled the battery and it seems to work but I wanted to make sure I didn't screw something up by mistake.
edit: did some research, doesn't look like anything's going to be wrong, since I never connected my phone to a USB of any kind... But my Pandora widget is broken, which I can work around with by just reinstalling the app. Am I still good to root though?
Sent from my Evo 4G using XDA App
by booting into recovery? no. if you want help rooting, i can help. even if you need a bit of hand holding, i'm not smart enough to help with anything else so...
Thank God, thought I might have destroyed any and all opportunity =/
I'll probably wait until Gingerbread to go beyond simply killing the Sprint Nascar, Football, FlashLite, and Nova apps...
once you root, you can get gingerbread and keep root. you might even be able to get gingerbread before stock with a leak, and you can already get an aosp version. either way, it will take a while for devs to root gingerbread. you can just root now, and upgrade your rom and radios to gingerbread later, giving you the exact same results but ROOTED! confusing? yes. opposite of ios? yes. awesome? also yes.
Definitely the opposite of i(P)OS, it looked so awesome until maybe six or seven hours after I got my Evo when Sony announced Playstation Suite... Now I'm just waiting for Gingerbread to come (and for a stable CM7, don't want to flash a beta ROM as my first only to have something go horribly wrong)...
so you dont want to root then? you might have to wait a while once gb comes out...
it has not yet been released... but here is a link to the guy working on dual booting.

Owning multiple Android devices

Silly question but here goes...
I currently have a Nexus One and I'm planning on buying a XOOM next month (wifi only)
question is: can I log into my XOOM with my current google account (used by my N1) and choose what apps to sync etc.. or will I have to create a new google account entirely, just for the XOOM?
Basically, can you be on 2 android devices at once with the same username from google, or not? Cuz I know if you change phones, you just login and it will re-download apps, bookmarks, settings etc.... but will it recognize the fact that you're on a tablet and sorta create 2 profiles?
You only need one Google account. All of your purchased applications will transfer over and you will have the ability to pick and choose what you'd like to install on either device. From my experience, the auto restore for apps and the rest of your data only occurs when you are using the same device, but I could be wrong. For reference, I'm using an LG Optimus for work and a Nexus S for my personal device.
You only need one account. I'm using my N1 and i have a rogers captivate for work and i can sync everything on both phones. It's great to only have to pay once for my apps and use them on a different phone.
You can definitely do that. I have 3 phones synced to my Google account right now.
The web based Android market seems enabled for just this. It will differentiate devices and you can "send" an app to your specific device.
My guess is its not a problem as Android tablets have been around for months now.
Purchased apps can be used on my phone and tablet. The auto restore seems to be device type specific because when I got a loaner MyTouch 4g, it installed everything that was on my N1 automagically (a little surprising).
On the tablet, purchased apps showed up as purchased, but nothing auto downloaded.
My tablet is Archos so it is not official market supported like the Xoom so it would be interesting to find out about the auto restore but I doubt it will.
Market seems to be pretty good about device type identification.

The other thing that seems to impact whether or not apps are restored automatically is when you put in your Google account during the activation process. It seems that all of my devices will restore my apps if I put it in immediately after flashing a new ROM or doing a full wipe, but if I skip that process and add it later, the apps are not restored.
Either way, the device will recognize what you've purchased and will automatically sync contacts, calendar, etc. if you choose it to.
We should ask in the xoom section... I just ordered one too and am kinda interested in how this works.

It's not a 'real' tablet experience, per se, but I just activated a second android device on my account. I've been using CM7 on my N1. I loaded a CM7 ROM onto a Nook Color yesterday, and almost all of my market apps came down when I signed in, many of them with settings intact. Both devices are displayed on the My Account -> Settings page on the web market.
I've been managing the app loads on each device separately. So far I have not noticed any cross-contamination of apps or settings from one device to the other. Contacts have remained synced up the whole time.

when I setup my Xoom yesterday i used the same account as on my mesmerize and it synced
Things like contacts from gmail, emails, and calendar, pretty much the usual google apps.. As far as the other apps, they did not sync in three slightest. The apps which I've paid for show up in my apps so i can download them but they do not do it automatically and I've had to manually download each one and set whether it auto updates or not. As for the other apps
Not a single one even showed as having been on my phone. I guess the rule of thumb is if its a paid app, it will be possible to manually install it from my apps but free apps do not at all carry over.
this is my experience and certainly there is room for improvement... There are apps out there that can do this for us, market quick links is one of those I think. It backs up links for the installed apps so they can be quickly installed on an(other) device...

Most apps will sync in both places. I had trouble with docs 2 go. Would only register on the device it was first installed (licensing issues). They offered to reassign to the new device but then it wouldn't work on the first one.

I noticed when I was purchasing docs to go that it said it would only work on one device at a time, but i think that unless otherwise specified in the apps tos that it should work for all apps but that some companies want to force a second buy for each device even though I can only user one at a time... Greedy aorta sorta and makes me not wanna use apps like that to discourage devs from taking such actions..

I just wanted to make sure... because it would suck to have alllllllllll the apps from my N1 on my XOOM .. I wanna pick which ones. and by picking which ones to keep on XOOM, I didn't want it to "sync" with my N1 and delete them there too!
If they are truly treated as 2 different objects, then perfect!
On a side note, I can't wait for the damn WIFI-only version to come out already!!!
I can confirm that they are all treated differently.
I currently have 3 devices on the go at once and all from the same Google account.

I have an N1 and just got a viewsonic g tab. None of my apps automatically installed on the tab using the same google account, but I can confirm that my purchased apps were in the list. If you have a ton of free apps and don't want to dig through the market for them all, you can use a backup app to back them up on your N1 and then copy them over to the tab and restore the ones you want. This saved me a lot of time.
Jon
actually, I didn't want ANY apps to sync at all I want both my devices to be unique, but use the same google account. Looks like I'll be ok!
Thanks for all the responses guys!
As long as my N1 and future XOOM sync contacts/calendar/etc... but not all apps, I'm happy

Epic isn't supported. Go on the website. As of Monday, the Epic was the only Android phone not supported by the app.
Eh, it's on the supported devices page, but they have the wrong picture and say only 2.1 is supported.
With that said, I have it installed on my stock EB13 with no problems, and I just tried the "locate my phone" thing and it worked just fine. Unfortunately I have no idea if it would be able to tell if you are running a custom ROM or anything, but I plan to uninstall it before I root and load up a new ROM again, just to be safe.
well it is possible that they can see what os we are running as it pulls the info from the device. websites do this all the time. we hear reports of an android version like 2.3 or 2.4 showing up in access logs of who visited the site... i would think the app would do something like that also. so i would not use it... i use lookout mobile security.
To be honest, that app scares the crap out of me. I don't need Sprint telling me they will not support my device anymore cause they had an application that told them what was happening on my phone. I would much rather use another application. Would suck if I had hardware failure, and they decided they will not replace it under warranty because of the evidence they have on hand to show that I was using root and foreign Roms.
I installed the app on my rooted dk28 epic and ill let you guys know. I'll know in the next couple days.
It does not work on my custom rom. I'm running Nebula, which declares itself in about phone. TEP program probably checks version numbers.
AFAIK this app won't run on a modded Epic for some reason. I hear it runs fine on the Evo roms.
i wounder if sprint can tell if your rooter and custom from just connecting to data services such as 3g and or 4g? They could pull simple things like version numbers... we could blame it on the 20 apps that google pulled that rooted phones....

[Q] Verizon users - how to delete backup assistant?

So when I got my phone 2 days ago the verizon guy INSISTED on downloading and installing backup assistant when I specifically tried to cancel it because I don't need it (your data backs up to google, but he says "well now you will be double backed up" I don't need a double backup!). To avoid an argument i just figured whatever I'll just delete it when I get home, well low and behold you can't uninstall this app now that its installed!
So is there any way to delete this app without rooting the phone? I don't want to root it, it runs fine for my needs as is, and I have other rooted android devices (tablets) for when I want to play and experiment. Any ideas?

Umm, every Xplay device at my store has BackUp Assistance already on it including mine. Didn't download it. Pretty much every Android device on VZW (except Devour, Droid 1 and Eris) all had this preinstalled and to get rid of it you need a root.
Also, I realize that he might have insisted in turning on the backup assistance feature on your phone but please understand, we get rated by VZW on how many smartphones we sell and our stores get rated on how many phones we turn Backup Assistance on. It is one of our requirements to do for every phone activation since they made it a free service. Verizon got tired of everyone complaining that there was no easy free way to back up your contacts in case the phones were damaged so it is a program that they have as bloatware on every device and if we dont put it on e100% of devices we get questioned if we forgot or the customer said they didn't want it or a plethora of things. The Backup Assistance does not really hurt anything except use up like 5.8mb of memory and check your contacts nightly for a backup. I mean yes you have an Adnroid device, it back's up to google. What would happen if the next time you got a phone you chose you dont like Android anymore? That BlackBerry looks good, or god forbid the iPhone 6g (lol) This at least gives you a quick contact backup to another device other then android.
Moral of my story is he was doing his job so he can keep his job, don't blame him, blame VZW. ^_^

I understand that having worked in retail myself before, which is why when he insisted it needed to be installed I just let him do what he had to do figuring I have the ability to change it afterwards anyway.
And yes I blame VZW, but more people for needing their devices to be stupid proof, hence the popularity of the iPhone (wouldn't be caught dead owning one).

I wouldn't neither lol.
Anyway when ever we first power up a new device after we have it activated in the system we are shown the activation screen on the android devices. In our phones case, the Green Android. After we call in *228 Option 1 and the phone programs itself the very next thing that pops up is Google, then Backup Assistant, then the "Other Account" screen. I mean if you really don't want it running Hard Reset the phone. And start over skipping the activation of backup assistant. I have no idea if this would make it still run in the background or not but it would stop it from uploading and downloading your contact information every day.

I'd imagine it will still run in the background and ask me to set it up which would be annoying too. Not worth hard reseting the phone so I'll just live with it unless I decide to root it some day.

I can confirm that even when you do a full hard reset, that it still runs in the background even if you don't want it and even if it is not in the set-up account list. It is set as a system service, and uses about 2.3-6MB of active memory, and around 15MB total memory (I think this includes linked libraries). Also, it is correct in that it can't be removed unless the phone is rooted. Which VZW was kind enough to lock us out of, and make sure that SonyEricsson wouldn't allow us a method to unlock the bootloader (despite SE's general policy).
Oh yes, I completely blame Big Red on this one. They should not have services running in the background that are not absolutely neccessary to the running of the phone. These extraneous services are part of what slow down phones and fill them with junk.
Also, VZW forcing an agreement with GameLoft for them to only allow R800x (the Verizon CDMA version of Xperia Play) to only be obtained directly through the VZWapps store (at an inflated cost, and with zero support) is also directly attributed to Verizon and their heavy handed tactics. Every game in the Play Launcher under "More Games" all link to the VZWapps store and not android market nor the direct creators web store. On top of that, the links are often non-functioning, and the store is often broken or down.
If you can't tell, I'm _VERY_ unhappy with VZW as a company. The local salespeople and techs? I'm happy with them.

As much as I love the phone Verizon completely ruins the experience that Sony Ericsson tried to have the phone give the consumer. I am ashamed at what they locked us out of and hell I sell their products.
Honestly I am wondering where the hell our PS1 Exclusive titles are that are redone for our phones... One would assume that this could have been plugged into the PS3 and PSN to download the PS1 titles and maybe even then Mini's but that isn't even available for this PlayStation Certified phone.
Part of me regrets the purchase but I still get to play NES, SNES, Atari, Genesis, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, MAME, PS1 (FPse) and alot of other things that are on the market with it, but whats a playstation phone with no PSN and 1 Playstation game... and honestly I hated Crash back when it was new... I wish I could uninstall the POS.
This actually reminds me of a question I had. Should you download these games from the market instead do they
a) still support the control pad
b) still show up in the launcher
And yeah.. where the hell are all the games? Aren't there way more games available in Europe?
PS this by far is not the first time this has happened with them. I bought a Motorola v710 when it came out with VZW and while it advertised all the cool BT things you could do (file transfer, tethering, syncing, etc) verizon locked out everything except support for headsets and speakerphones, to force people to use vcast and other paid for services, but didn't tell anyone. Needless to say after a class action lawsuit that they lost they had to offer to buy back every v710 + accessories etc and give the person a new phone of their choice, or cash, AND let you out of your contract with no penalty. I ended up getting a RAZR which the lovely verizon version omitted the microSD slot.

The original GSM RAZR's did not have a MicroSD slot in them either.

Illusia - Partial Controller Support
Zenonia 1, 2, & 3 - Partial Controller Support
Baseball Superstars 2010 - Controller Works for me
baseball Superstars 2011 - Controller works for me.
GameDevStory - Nope
Gurk 1 & 2 - Nope
Wordsmith - nope

They don't show up in the game launcher though right?
PS Just realized they have this VZNavigator on here too... Yes because I'm going to pay for nav services when google is on the phone for free.

Cool ok.
I tried going to Gameloft's app store website and it seemed to allow me to download a "R800x" version of any game they had. I didn't buy any but it didn't put up any roadblocks. do you know if those games would go into the launcher? Many are not available from the Launcher's list.
Also, why for example does assassins creed show a "subscription" for $2.99 or "first download" for $6.99, whats the subscription?
Either way if I did buy that game id go straight to gameloft as its 2 bucks cheaper there and its buy one get one free this month!

subscription gets you the full game but you pay 2.99 a month that you have the subscription, this is best if you wanna try the game out or know you will beat it in a month, but 99 times out of 100 buying it is better.

Ohh and I attempted to use Gamelofts store to purchase a game, said my credit card was invalid. umm it isnt, it is what I use for everything. Not to mention their store is a ***** to navigate through. Long story short, cant buy anything on their website for my phone.

Hmm... I kinda wanna try it myself just to see.... That would be really crazy if they were able to lock out website purchases.
I love how the games are mysteriously missing from the Android Market....
Gameloft's games are not missing "mysteriously". Gameloft dropped them from the Market.

Ahh I was under the impression that Verizon blocked the apps on the market as I have seen with other apps on other devices in the past, to force you to purchase for $2 more through the Vcast store. Is this just new games or something? I see Apshalt 6, NOVA 2, and Modern Combat 2 in the Market on the web (for the same price Verizon sells at) for example, but Assassins Creed HD is not there.

[Q] deleting stock apps

I got a new Nexus 4, from my girl actually :good: But I want to clean as much space as possiable by rooting it. But when I rooted my old LG P990 the thing got slow. I don't want this to happen to this phone becuase it is such a nice phone and very fast now.
If I do root, can I delete these apps without any problems to the phone: (ex. slow, other apps not working, etc..)
Currents
Earth
email
google+
hangouts
local
messenger
movie studio
news/weather
youtube
Basic daydreams
android live wallpapers
bubbles
google korean keyboard (can I install Chinese? I am living in china studying Chinese)
Phase Beam
Quick Office
live wallpaper picker
music visualization wallpapers
Thank you. I am loving this new phone. I swear i would never touch anything LG after the P990. But the girl got it for me and I fell in love. But after this phone I still won't buy another LG. Sumsong 4 is my dream still...
It won't make a difference in speed but when a OTA update comes out it will not install
Sent from my Nexus 4
Rooting your phone doesn't make it slow. You might as well just flash a custom ROM over it because when a new OTA comes and your girl accepts the OTA, it'll probably fail with you deleting apps from the /system/app/ folder. I recommend Carbon Rom with Franco Kernel (kernel matters more than the ROM in terms of speediness)
If you want to keep it stock... then yes removing those apps are fine.
If you want the Chinese Keyboard then just download https://play.google.com/store/apps/...29nbGUuYW5kcm9pZC5pbnB1dG1ldGhvZC5waW55aW4iXQ..
Why remove YouTube? YouTube is awesome and takes rarely any space.

Thanks for the help.
How can I delete them if I don't root? I am guessing I can't as I couldn't on my P990.
Also, about the OTA. So if I root, I will lost the abilty to update over the air?! Wow, didn't know that. That is a nice feature as I don't have a computer, I have the Surface RT and whenever I want to update or re-root my P990 I have to borrow a friends laptop. Its a PETA!
I don't watch contant on my phone or stream anything as I can't afford big data plans. If I am around wifi and need youtube, I go to my Surface RT, easier to search, etc. I don't consume content with phones. They are a tool for business for me. Plus youtube is blocked in China...
Thank you!

It isn't root that will not allow you to flash the OTA. Its the removal of stock apps.

You can also always revert the root, without loosing anything...

ok. I was looking at the apps tab under settings and I noticed you can disable the stock apps. Do many people do this? I assume this will stop the app from working and not allow it to use the internet, correct?
Also, if I disable the ones listed above would that screw up other google apps? Will it make the phone a little faster? Maybe not noticable, but possiable?
Yeah disabling them means just that. Disabling Google apps may break things. I doubt disabling apps will make the phone faster. Its pretty fast the way it is.

Yeah, the N4 is not a Samsung device packed with bloatware. There is very less gain in wiping system apps.

Agreed although I do disagree with the bloatware part to a certain extent. Google does bloat their phones with Google apps such as: Google+ etc. I personally don't use it but it comes shipped. But yeah when compared to the other devices it doesn't have carrier apps or any Samsung app store or whatever.
