Surround reset itself. Storage not recognized, reported as 15.73 MB. - Surround General

I am posting this hoping it helps someone with the same problem.
I had my phone resetting itself several times a day, finding it without all the configuration (people, email, carrier hubs on the home screen, etc.) and reporting the storage as 15.73 MB instead of the 16 GB. In the last part of the problem, my phone did not recognized the storage at all, no matter what I did.
Windows Phone 7 uses the internal SD (yes, our Surrounds and most, if not all, of the HTC 7 devices have Internal SDs but covered under the phone case http://www.anandtech.com/show/4015/htc-surround-review-pocket-boombox/8) as part of the Windows file system, it does not differentiate between on chip storage and SD storate, WP7 treat the storage as a big one, storing all kind of OS configuration (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2450831/en-us) on it (SD card). Hence when the SD problem presents, the phone resets because the OS can not continue to run due to data missed, and also this is why all the configuration (email, hotmail, also the carrier personalizations, etc.) is lost, because is stored on the SD that is not recognized by that time.
An excerpt from the link above:
The phone’s operating system integrates the SD card with the phone:
•When you start your phone for the first time.
•When your phone is reset to its original factory settings. This is called a factory reset. This is a task that is typically only performed by OEMs or MOs.
When the operating system integrates the SD card with your phone:
1.It reformats the SD card.
2.It creates a single file system that spans the internal storage and the SD card.
3.It locks the card to the phone with an automatically generated key.
So we conclude that the problem is caused by the internal SD not correctly integrated with WP7. In my case a factory reset did not help, no matter what I did the phone did not recognized the card, reporting storage as 15.73 MB. The solution involved opening the phone (I did not care to void warranty, anyway I am far from the States where I bought the phone and can not get a new one. But for you, your best bet is to get a new one, and make a factory reset as soon as you use it FOR THE FIRST TIME, and let the phone finish to do its thing). I had to open the phone, get the SD out of the phone, turn the phone on, do a factory reset, turn off the phone, insert the SD card in the phone, turn on the phone and finally do a factory reset. This procedure had WP7 reintegrating properly the SD. My phone now is rock solid, it has not reseted even once.

Great Intel
Thank you for this! I'm glad you got it working as well. Based on your situation and results/ what the links you posted say, I would think that it is possible to take a different SD card, say one with 32GB of memory, and replace the one in the phone in the same manner that you have. Has anyone tried this? This is for future knowledge for me, as I do not want to void my warranty....yet.
Thanks again!
God Bless

I had this same problem the other night. Just doing a factory reset ended up clearing the problem for me. I haven't seen the problem in a few days.

Help! Storage Card suddenly not showing - dead?
Has anyone had problems with the Storage Card completely dying? I cannot read my 1GB miniSD card on my Wizard device at all any more. It started being weird yesterday but after a reset I was able to access the data, but today it is totally gone.
A 16MB one works fine. :? These cards don't generally die that easily do they?
Could this be a driver issue or something else so I can get my data back? I have tried many resets both with and without the card in place.
I've the same problem (I guess) with my card. I'm not able to read my card on the vario. When i inserted my SD card in a PC he cant read the card. When i start my PC with the card insered system hangs on loading windows.
When I restart my phone with the SD card inserted WIFI wont go on, do you have th same problem CJSnet ?
This looks like the SD disk is something like an (unreadable?) bootdisk ?
I had the same problem with a SanDisk 1GB card recently. I sent it back to the supplier and they replaced it.
Before my "Mini S" I had a "2i" and it was well known that it would "eat" cards. On that forum they compiled a list of "never eaten" cards and recommended staying away from anything not on the list.
I suspect the Wizard may have a similar problem.
i've also got a problem with my miniSD, sometimes it doesn't recognise the card. But when i remove it and re-insert a few times it does work again.
A common problem with the SD-cards is that their contacts are dirty, cleaning sometimes helps.
Thanks mmm_ok, can you provide a link to that list of 'never eaten' cards please?
Mine is an unbranded type from Viking, so that could be the reason.
zawoot, I had no problems with WiFi and the card inserted.
Have now solved it. When I loaded the card on a PC and ran chkdsk, some of the files were corrupt (plus the boot partition I expect). I copied the salvagable files to the PC, formatted the miniSD which took about an hour (!), and now the PPC can read it again. Now I just copy back the files from the PC, and the lost ones from a recent backup.
What a pain in the backside. HTC not fixing the 'eating cards' bug has cost me 3 hours of my life. What price technology!
SD card problem
I'm facing the same problem. The last thing I tried was format the SD Card
using Pocket Mechanic "Logical Format" - "do not use quick format", format it
two times and just that. Also, as a test, I'm not using the full SD Card
capacity, my SD has 1 G and at this time I'm using 700M and since 10 days ago
everythiong is fine. As an additional test I leaved the battery goes to a
very low level and reseted the device to see it it corrupt the data .. but
is still ok.
My 2GB Adata myflash card has done this. I'm so mad, it has to go all the way back to china for repair.
This is really wierd behaviour for a phone. HTC in all its shoddy glory.

SO is there any other issues after you did the format?
I have an ATP 1Gb MiniSD and sometimes my MDA just said that it can't execute an application (that's installed to the miniSD card) because it was "usigned". When I run Resco Explorer, I noticed that the card is NO LONGER shown (???). So I took out the card, re-inserted it and it's now shown in Resco Explorer as "Storage Card2" ! So of course none of the program works since the links (in registry especially), pointed to "Storage Card", not the one that ends with 2. So my solution (for now) is to just shutdown the device, wait for a few minutes, then turn it on again.
I have had 2 cards from mobymemory 1gb and now 2gb - not one problem run well. Can highly recommend mobymemory the use single density cards or something that many of the other manufactures don't use. my advice stay away from cheap cards.
I used a backup utility my card died, and windows could not open it, I reformatted on my digital cam and it works again. It's the software loaded on it.
My MiniSD card popped out of its slot spontaneously last night. Ever since my Qtek 9100 would not recognise it any longer. It still worked on my card-reader attached to my PC. In the end I decided to format the card (not quick format) and now my Wizard recognises the storage card again. Losing all my downloaded attachments during the process. FYI It is a SanDisk 1GB MiniSD card.
sandisk 1g card is almost 2-yrs old and was first for typhoon and now serves faraday and wizard and just started acting wierd on wizard. every so often device does not read card upon waking. pulling it out and reinserting fixes it but i've moved programs to device. poo!!!
Storage Card seemed dead
I had a simuliar problem with my original qtek 1.6 rom until I upgraded to the latest imate 2.17.
Having worked 5-10 minutes with wi-fi, the storage card became invisible and unaccessible. To make it visible once again it was necessary to soft reset the device.
This and some other problems disappeared once I upgraded to 2.17.
Hope this help

MINI SD disappeared!

Hi guys... I have the worst problem since I bought this brilliant device: I was playing with a game (installed on the mini SD), and when I tried to save it told me I had not enough storage space. Puzzled, I ended the game and went back to the normal pda functions...just to find out my SD is not recognized anymore. Zero, nada. Disappeared. Tried to get it out and in again (a million times), and I don't even get the sound I used to get. I tried fitting the minisd to the sd adapter and put it in an old zire: the card works!Everything is there. But the wizard won't recognize it anymore. Tried soft reset and it didn't help... Not so keen on hard resetting unless it is the only option but...I'm dazed...It doesn't see it anymore.I admit I was playing the game at 240 mhhz (overclocked) but I had played it a million times already and everything was smooth... PLEASE HELP!
same here im having this problem. it's annoying as hell!
same here im having this problem. it's annoying as hell!
I have had the problem of the memory card seemingly disappearing.
On checking closer, I noticed I had 'Storage Card' and 'Storage Card2'
Storage Card had one file on it and everything else was still on Storage Card2.
By deleting Storage Card abd soft reset, all was restored.
This has happened a couple of time.
If this happens to you, make sure you delete the right one.
Storage card
I've never unlocked the extended rom (Storage_card_2), so i have just Storage Card, a 1 Gig Sandisk mini SD. Still, it dissapears a couple of times a day, and i must soft reset my wizard to appear again. Very, very frustrating
Missing data
Something similar has happened to mine as well....
I turned my PDA on and accessed the storage card just like I do on any other day, only to find that all of the files had disappeared!! Everything had gone - but when I went into the memory setting, where it tells you how much space is used on the card it is still showing up as being half full i.e. the data is still there but not showing up on explorer!!
What is this all about??!! It has never happened to me before!!
Just wish I could offer an explanation on how to fix this...
You can probably read those files in Windows. This memory card disappearing problem seems to occur frequently with Wizard. Lookslike some program keeps corrupting the memory card.
Format the card in Windows and put it back in your phone, it will most likely work.

If you format the card, surely it will wipe everything that was on there in the first place..?!
There must be a way of retrieving those missing files somehow without resorting to formatting...
The weird thing is, today I transferred a single file from my desktop to the Sd card (whilst in my XDA) and suddenly some of the missing files appeared...?!
Now to find the rest of them....
I would love to have storage card 2 or something like that, but all I get is...the same behaviour I'd get if NO sd was in. I don't want to hard reset UNLESS somebody can confirm me this works...I am so desperate, it kinda looks like the sd reader is dead...all of a sudden! Please guys help...
I hard resetted and still it doesn't work...I'll take it to a shop to repair...I am totally disappointed!
I had this, the card came back after I just placed it in a card reader, browsed it on a pc, then replaced it in the phone.

What is do
It happens to me too - if I go into file explorer, I see storage_card and storage_card_2. The contents of storage_card_2 are exactly those of my SD. If I delete storage_card, remove and re-insert my SD, storage_card_2 disappears and storage_card is as it should be...
It was an sd problem...as soon as I have formatted it started to work again...
hope that sorts it for you guys if you have this annoying problem...

Mini SD trouble.

Just trying to upload a few files to my 1gb sandisk and found that some files and directories had just become a jumble of characters and after a soft reset my programs that were stored on the card refused to work.
I had the phone reasonably close to my monitor at work on the desk, could that have been the prob or is my card going to die ?
Formatted it on the PC and its back to normal for now. Just re installing everything.
i got the same thing just now. all my games and programs stored on my miniSD card dont work! what the heck?
Is it some form of magnetism interference or power surge or what ? I was plugging my phone into the usb attached to the computer at the time when I first noticed it. Everything had been runnning fine before that.
Hope its not going to keep happening on a regular basis.
It happened to me too, I think it is due to two programs trying to write to the storage card at once, or something reading while some else is writing, or similar.
I wiped mine and fortunately was able to replace most of what was on there (mostly music) but found out afterwards that there was a good chance of recovery.
Try checking out EasyRecovery Professional, there is a free trial I beleive and you should be able to recover files on your card (even if they have been deleted and not yet overwritten).
Hope this helps

Problem with internal memory - faulty phone only 2 weeks old

Hi
Well i have been getting the following faults since yesterday evening
1, Get notification that SD card was removed unexpectedly - then it loads again. when it says sd card it implies the internal memory - since while it is loading apps installed on internal memory are greyed out.
2, Sometime i get notification saying damaged sd card - when i click on it it tells me to format internal storage. Sometime restarting the phone restores everything yet other time you need to do a hard reset.
I have tried everything - i upgraded to the latest firmware / formatted internal storage. Fault keeps repeating. Most of the time fault happens when i wake up phone from sleep.
I contacted samsung - and they told me to take it to have it repaired. What a pity - i only had this phone for 2 weeks!!!.
Anyone passing through the same thing? not sure whether this is a known issue since the repair was quite decisive in that phone needs to be repaired - maybe samsung is aware of such a fault.
Ken
Ahh!! Me too. Everything I tried it never help. My case same as ken481. Everything same.
return it and get a replacement...
have had the phone for almost a week and no issues like what you said so far. assume u don't have an sd card inserted and "sd card fault" is really the internal memory and not the actual sd card itself.
sounds like a faulty phone and u should get a replacement.
From your post it wasn't quite clear that if you have sd-card or not?
If you don't have, what happens if you enter sd-card? Maybe there is something in the slot which is making the error. If you just put sd-card there maybe it will get fixed?
On the other hand if you already have sd-card in the slot, I think that is a problem of the sd-card then.
Palmmmy - did you get a replacement?
Hi Guys i was told to try and run a disk check on the phone drive - anyone has any idea how to do this?
Ken
Hi
OK i tried one other thing - i removed external sd card from mobile.
When i try to move an application to sd card it tell me "Failed to move application not enough memory"
To my knowledge the galaxy should use the internal memory for applications right?
So i assume this is a clear indication that there is something wrong with the phone

Damaged microSD Card...(this is how I recovered my Data)

.......right in the middle of a super demanding day, the message "damaged SD Card / Reformat" appeared on my Epic, when I least expected it (inopportune is the word)............ changing firmware is never without its more interesting moments, + this may or may not be a symptom (went froyo to gingerbread), however,........... am sharing this post to the Epic community, as i sense this to be an important enough issue...........no one really knows the specific cause of sd card corruption + failure: it's variable + always somewhat circumstantial (ie, saw it mentioned elsewhere that overheating from an overclocked cpu could cause damage as well)...................so, moving forward I simply want to contribute as a brief description, here, how i was able to recover (most) of the files from my 'damaged micro sd card:'
First, when i saw 'damaged sd card / format card' on the phone, when it became possible 4 me to do so many hours later, instead of 'formatting' I replaced the damaged card for a new one (pny 16gb sdhc class 10)...booted the phone everything was fine (15.91gb space available)........as expected, no files in the SD Card......................next:
(1) placed 'damaged' sd card into the reader that came w/ the device, and mounted to pc, selected the drive (followed by confirmation beep 'device detected' sound, then the language: 'd:\ not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable' came on the screen..........went to RUN and typed CMD........from new window, I typed Chkdsk d: /r and the PC began reading the contents of the damaged SD card (most of the android zip files etcetera were there, as were a number of files w/ no content) + next i typed 'exit' (no quotations, just the letters) to return to the windows desktop.......OK, so now the only files missing are the pix + video mov's (far as I can remember).
..........(2) next, to recover pix + video, from the pc desktop i opened ZARecovery (if you do not already have it go to Data Recovery Software, Solutions, Tutorials, Forum - ZAR Data Recovery and download the free recovery program from that site).
.............(3) from the ZARrecovery main page, selected sd card as device, selected 'next', selected 'root' folder for all files that ZAR was able to detect as recoverable, entered destination folder name (for transfer of recovered pix + video to PC....note: NEVER to sd card itself!), + lastly, selected 'start copying selected files'.........and that was it, closed ZAR + began viewing the content of the recovery folder to get an assessment of what had actually been recovered, and what had been lost.................fortunately 4 me, the loss was minimal, as I tend to create backups (Nandroids, every half year; pic, videos, email attachments = pretty regularly).
Hope this helps those of you that have been experiencing microSD Card damage (from whatever source).
Remember, + not to speak to the Choir, but can not to overstate this: BACKUP............. BACKUP............. BACKUP.............BACKUP

Yikes! I make nandroids before I do anything I consider major like updating Superuser when the reviews are sketchy, or when I do something like apply a new patch, a new tweak, or anything that I think could give me trouble. As I have my phone tuned absolutely perfect, where I want to bring my phone back to normal with a minimum of work.
I guess I am lazy. I nandroid every 3 to 7 days.

I am so paranoid about sd crashes and corruption because I have had my share when upgrading to the next bigger card (had a 2,4,8,16, and now 32gb in each epic) that I sync my epic cards to my PC on two separate drives for both my wife and myself (my PC has three physical (not virtual)l hard drives C, D, E) every 3 to 4 weeks. So for her, I am pretty safe except for those long updates in between her trips home. I feel pretty safe in case I do something stupid, which I do from time to time.
I actually tried to convince her to get an iPhone, because I think there would be less updates than Android, but she won't give up the physical KB. Not that I don't like updates, but I set her epic to be a 98% clone of mine, so we each have a lot of apps and each app is eventually updated and often!

Sadly SD cards and USB sticks are very unreliable when it comes to data. They are easily damage and anything slight can cause them to be corrupted.
This is a great guide, glad you were able to restore your data!
Most data in flash type memory cards (excepting physical cracks in the microSD Card housing + damage to the memory chip itself) can be recovered w/ several DIY software programs available on the android market..........ugothkd shared a few of these, several posts up.........in the event that there is NO BACKUP available to you + having exhausted all personal DIY recovery avenues, there are still ways to step-up the process and very likely recover some of your data..........am quoting the following language from Recoverfab (maker of enterprise flash readers to the trade):
'In general, there are two reasons why the data on memory flash devices (cards, USB-sticks, SSD) becomes inaccessible.
Logical damage prevents access to the data/pictures on the drive, but the drive is still physically recognized by the computer operating system. In this case some specialized types of recovery software can help. Sometimes free recovery tools like Zero Assumption Recovery can also solve this problem.
Physical damage causes the drive to be unrecognized by the computer's operating system, making it impossible to access the contents of the flash-memory chip. This type of damage happens in more than 80% of all known cases. These are most frequently caused by electrical problems that lead to physical damage. Flash devices consist of a memory chip and a controller. The controller writes and reads the data from the memory chip. In most cases, recovery is possible from a flash device with a damaged controller and mostly undamaged memory chips.
Formatting is required? The controller of the memory card is not in the position to inform the PC operating system about the characteristics of the memory card. Therefore, the PC assumes that the memory card is not formatted and requests formatting. One might think that the memory card problems would be solved by formatting, but unfortunately it does not work due to the damaged controller. Instead, the computer will communicate that formatting is not possible. Such an error is a clear indicator that no kind of software (including special formatting or rescue software!!) will be able to access the memory card.
.....Recovery Process: If the flash storage device is not recognized in the computer or it is impossible to access the data on it, there is only one way to get the data: unsolder the memory chip from the printed circuit board and directly access the raw data with a programmable chip reader.' <end quote>
OK......that was a long quote!.....worth repeating, if only to begin to address the sort of things that can damage / corrupt SD Cards (+ also to give those of you that really want to recover your lost data super badly some HOPE).
Heat, liquid, dust, some of the things that WILL damage your SD Card (numerous other things can corrupt your data as well) .....then you hear cases of individuals that have NEVER HAD ANY DAMAGE WHATSOEVER...........some burnin' Q's: is the fragile nature of the card itself doomed to failure? ...If the card is going to fail eventually, what kind of data would you be willing to risk storing in there?...... if the data is that important to you, would you be willing to make a 'twin' copy? (twin SD Card could be swapped quickly in case of ER) ..... + lastly, has anyone here found a fail-safe or fairly sound way to run voluminous or frequent data transfers between your device's SD Card + pc?

Yup, I have a spare twin identical card Lexar 32gb class 10 waiting in the wings as a backup.
I use a program that can transfer and/or sync in many different ways my card to my PC, which I do every three or four weeks. It is called FolderMatch v3.44. I am sure there is a newer version out, but the one I have does the job
I simply plug my USB cable into my PC and the other end into my epic and simply choose synchronize, then chose make left folder (my PC) to be the same as the right folder (my epic) - depending on how many files you are syncing determines the speed of the sync. Works good for me!

ZAR has an 'unformat' option for Raw File Systems, you may want to explore if there is data remaining in your SD Card that you may want to recover (there's a brief tutorial posted on their website) ........ here's a glimpse:
"Unformat is the process of data recovery from a storage device (which can be a hard drive, a camera memory card, an USB pen drive) that was formatted.
The step-by-step tutorial below describes the procedure to recover data when the drive was accidentally formatted and you want to unformat the drive Windows reports "raw filesystem", or the drive is "not formatted" <end quote>
The above makes reference to a specific type of recovery (accidental format of a drive, as an example), but the application will recover from a number of file types + systems............worth checking it out.
*edit* as another example, 'accidental format of a drive' can also refer to split-second decisions we make when we guickly hit 'reformat sd card' on our device the very first time we ever encounter a 'corrupted external card / reformat?' type of message........in the moment, life goes on + it's only later that we begin to think of the lost data..................however, chances are pretty good that the data is recoverable (files are still inside the 'reformatted' sd card, only unreadable, ie RAW).
