[Q] Wi-Fi problem solving... - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

I am, Like a lot of others, having trouble getting my WP7 HD2 to accept my Wi-Fi network...
So lets do some research and figure this out!
The phone is seeing my network. When the password is put in it won't connect. (Not the same issue that pulling the SD card fixes)
I'm Running an linksys N router with wpa2 pass code.
Can we get a list going of 1:Working set-ups and 2:Non working set-ups?
Might it be the N network? or that fact that it is dual speed? ( i.e. Simultaneous 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands)
With a little research we can figure this out, so please contribute...
Thanks!

I CANNOT get my password accepted.
I have a dlink di-524 wireless router that uses 128bit wep encryption and a 16digit hex passkey/password. I didn't 'activate' wp7, I just installed it. My 3g/2g worked fine, but no wifi (dealbreaker).
My 'mac filters' on the router is disabled.
Lets see what else... I used both a Kingston 4gb sdcard and a samsung 2gb card. I chose not to use my stock 16gb htc sdcard, because I didn't want to do all the data transferring, formatting, partition-rescuing etc.
I tried the sdcard in/out trick, and the 'flash wp7 with it in' and 'flash wp7 with it out' tricks too.
Nothing yet.

I agree, because that's the same thing as saying what it really needs is a droid that understands the binary language of moisture evaporators, and just knowing how to program binary locators isn't cutting it.
So based on that and my level of technical skill, yes, N network speed stuff.

Anyone out there figured out how to fix this? Does it have something to do with say, ' disabling wifi N in the registry ' and rebooting or something? I had to uninstall wp7 because of the wifi issue, so I hope someone knows a fix. Thanks in advance.

Gsm signal issue

I have my sgs for 2 weeks now. GSM disconnects around every 2 days.
At service mode (*#*#4636#*#* - Phone information) i can see this repport:
GSM disconnects:
====DATA=====
State: inactive
disconnected with last try
at 00:59
fail because No Error
The question is: why does this happen?
Is this an android issue or a hardware problem?
Any pointers?
Thanks in advance
.
do you ever enter a building, subway, or some other location where the GSM becomes poor?

That's not the problem.
Gsm disconnects just like that ,at home for instance. And when I notice that and try to reconnect (settings- wireless networks- mobile networks - networks operators) it doesnt find ANY of them.
Then I restart the phone and gsm network is back.
If I dont notice disconnection in time (so I can restart phone, people just cannot reach me....quite frustrating...
i see what you mean now.
yes, i've noticed that on mine too, but.... that's because i was fooling around with some new Apps Widgets settings i was testing to control the radio and data to save battery.
Did you install any new Apps recently that might cause that?

do you have an old sim card? i had a 3g sim card that wasnt even 1 years old and replacing it fixed connectivity issues on my nexus 1 and i had a similar experience with my old htc magic

Well I installed all kind of apps. but i have the feeling this problem was happening even before that.
And I dont need widgets to control data ( I think) because I set the sgs to use 2g networks only and I dont have apn configured( section is empty. Internet connec. only via wifi.

Well, my sim card is VERY old (2002) and the carrier (Telfort) is roaming into another carrier's network (Kpn) with no extra costs of course like real roaming, but still roaming (I get the little "R" next to the signal strenght bars)
Anyway this never happened with the Nokia 5800xm running Symbian OS and using the same sim card...
Starting to get pissed of with Android...
With Symbian you hack or root or tweak because you want to, not because you NEED to like with Android....
And then you prob. get side effects...
Thank you guys for your time
I would get a new sim card if I were you. Every android phone that I have had seems to work better with a good 3g sim.
Get a new SIM card.
same problem, different phone
i have the same problem on kaiser with flashed android on it.
sim is 2 years old, and now suddenly this happened, tried differents sim cards, but the problem persists. My guess is, it is a software problem.
Maybe i will report when I flash original WM6.1 rom onto it, if you are interested in the result
btw, this happened about two days ago and because of this im buying galaxy s so i hope the problem will be gone with new phone
did you guys see this other topic?

anyone able to reproduce this issue?

Why you think the problem will be gone if it's still android and I also got it with my sgs? Or are you counting on Froyo?
Yesterday I upgraded my sgs to froyo jpc with kies. I am new with Android but the post of Aery was so clear that i didnt resist: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=769400&highlight=froyo+upgrade
I did get stuck on reboot but could get out of it after applying a cache/data/factory reset on recovery mode (3 buttons)
Now I am being carefull with the 3rd party apps., and so far so good, no gsm disconnections .
Froyo is of course better that eclair but Android is still disappointing to me.
You flashed Android onto a WM device (i'm impressed); could you not teach me how to flash Symbian onto my SGS?
Voice dialing (over bluetooth or not) and proper connectivity control (network, data, gps and bluetooth) of android is years behind Symbian; and such a well written, light OS, it will just fly on a high-end hardware like the sgs; but that is an issue for another thread.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7938430#post7938430
Pls keep reporting..

I think indeed that's not the same issue. My problem is that the radio signal get turned off during inactivity. That's why I got connection back after reboot: radio signal gets turned on again; later I learned how to turn radio signal back on without rebooting, but that is just a remedy , no real solution.
Try to upgrade to froyo, make a factory reset and be carefull with 3rd party apps. With froyo you will need less interfering tools anyway
I dont thing that my old sim card is the problem, but i'll try to replace it anyway...but first things first
Btw dou you have 3g turned on? Cause I never...
Another mistery: When I have 3G on I see those bars (signal strenght) dancing and that "death grip" thing happening:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LROTHrTR92k
But when I have it on 2G only the bars doesnt move even if I strangle it with both hands.....
Please repport later how it's going...
I had the same issue, i sent mine back and got my money back, i had also tried with different simcards and resets and nothing worked.. so hopefully my new galaxy wont have this problem. Its strange that these problems are so rare though.. But as long i get it going ill be a happy man.
fourth day with JPC ( and 4 days after a factory reset) so far so good no disconnections . I think problem is gone...
Today just to be safe, I got a new sim card....the other one was too old anyway(8 years)
i have the same issue, for a few days i can't get 3g. i'm seriously wondering about sending back my sgs. i've ttried all the settings, changed my sim..nothing...begin to think it was a fullish thing to change Desire to SGS..

Well... this is not the same issue.
I have 3G (WCDMA) disabled. I only use 2G (GSM) and WIFI for data/internet connection.
I Dont have a data account, I dont need it therefore I disabled 3G in order to save battery.
If you do want to use 3G, just go to settings - wireless and network - mobile network settings - network mode and set auto-mode (GSM/WCDMA or 3G/2G)
If it doesn't work, apply a data/factory reset and try again.
And if it doesnt work, it's probably hardware related and you should return it or send it for repair.
My issue is more complicated; next to the fact that I dont want to use 3g, my carrier is roaming to another network and probably Android OS or the firmware cannot handle it properly.
Android is still premature and the "Samsung - Android integration" seems to need a lot of development as well.
It is just a shame that basic functions like proper connectivity control just wont cut it. And Google is not doing any good either.
And dont let me get started on the voice recognition issue......
Hardwarewise, the SGS is superior that htc desire.....I wonder how it would perform if running Symbian^3 OS or Meego.....
I get a great sound quality from the stock music player just by mixing the equalizer and using the music clarity effect...just great...better than any other device I tried.
And the OFFLINE Gps experience is just great as well: the combination SGS - Motonav - External Bluetooth gps device is working like a charm.
I wouldn't change my sgs just yet......
yesterday i was swiching sims to determine if is a sim fault and suddenly i have my 3g/h back. happy owner again. i've tried all to do this, from firmware upgrade to servide mode settings..i don't know why but i'm ok again...

Hello,
I know its been a long time since you wrote this thread but I just came by it!
I have the exact same problem with you (I had it since August) even now with the official froyo. I tried factory reset and no new apps (that could cause the problem) but it still disconnects randomly in GSM mode. However, when I have it on auto (gsm and wcdma) I have no issues. I just disconnect data from the power button in froyo. I am wondering if you ever found a solution..
Chryssa
Well, I am subscribed to this topic so I saw your post.
Good and bad news:
First the bad one: No solution yet, it keeps disconnecting IF I stay on "gsm only".
And the good (or a little better) news:
I noticed that on sgs, using "gsm only" or "gsm/wcdma (auto mode) makes no difference on battery consumption....
By the way, this is a Samsung issue, not really an Android one.
On a HTC Desire HD, you can use "gsm only" mode with no problems...
Thank you for your answer!
I noticed that about the battery too. So not too bad, I just have to keep it on auto mode then..
Same issue
Im having the same issue but in a optimus t the worst part is that i cant get service at all.. when i press change network preferred it wont change and when i try to press on turn on radio it wont work either....

[Q] network connection problem with all builds

I've tried a lot of builds from this forum (thanks to everyone who worked on them) but i noticed the following issue which i really can't understand why its happening.
the network connection does not work in all locations. i'd assume its a problem of the operator but.. if i reboot to windows mobile it works fine. i always experience the problem in the same locations (usually out of town) while when in town it works fine.
why does this happen? why is windows mobile different?
p.s i'm using the 2.12 radio.
try to set "aiplane mode" on and off... your network connection must be work.....
It's some problem for me..
same here. i've tried a plethora of builds and a couple of radios, but some builds have connections that work well and others work intermittently at best.
i have only been running an full nrg rom, but then everyone always yells that windows isn't running underneath anyways
+1 tried 2 builds and about 5 different radios... Phone with no data connection is a bit poor
Have you guys tried all the possible on/offs in windows before you boot through?
Cheers
make sure data roaming is on, and GSM/WCDMA switch is auto.
then turn on airplane mode, and switch back.
unfortunately i tried all of that. mainly i even tried rebooting the phone in windows, checking that network works, then rebooting again and starting android (just to make sure it wasnt affected by wm) and trying to get a network connection but still.
its puzzling cause this doesnt seem like an instability its more of an inability to get a connection when the signal is low or in areas that possibly run a slightly different kind of mobile network broadcast? (i'm not really familiar with how the network works..)
found the solution on this end. I am in France, so needed to modify the last couple of lines in /system/build.prop to point not to google (I assume), but to the local operator DNS.
Great stuff guys, I'm amazed!!
that could be it. how do i change build.prop from within android?
I am very curious to which lines you changed, and where you exactally changed them to. Please share, this been buggin me for weeks.
mine problem is my 3G network connection is very slow..... someone know how to solve this problem? i'm using radio v2.14 before & now v2.15 seems like same problem...
I changed the build.prop using builddroid: Install, connect phone in android in usb debugging mode, change the build.prop and transfer the changes onto the phone and reboot.
Here the last few lines of the build.prop I'm using. The dns's are provider specific...
Code:
name=Android
dalvik.vm.stack-trace-file=/data/anr/traces.txt
net.ppp0.dns1=62.201.129.99
net.ppp0.dns2=62.201.159.99net.dns1=62.201.129.99net.dns2=62.201.129.99net.dns3=62.201.159.99
Hope this works for you too
Thanks for the share , im in school right now, so im gonna try as soon as i have a window of time ty in advanced
Hey,
Could you tell me where you find that dns ip?
The only ip I could found was this:
192.168.251.150
But I highly doubt that its correct, because its so diffrent from yours, also my 3G didn't work with this one.
If you could help, would be great.

Air card is it possible

let me first start off by telling you that in no way shape or form am I skilled enough to be a developer nor am I asking the deleloper with the skill to take this on. I have searched a few forum and I really can't find any info about this subject.
I have a siearra wireless card USB598 the service is provided by Sprint, Does anyone know if it would be possible to make this work on the gtab? Or is it even possible to make it work in an android system?
When I plug the card in it powers up and seems to be doing what the card does but like you could guess it does nothing else. I didn't expect it to do anything else but I didn't think it would even power on.
I am not a developer either, but off the top of my head (devs feel free to correct me):
You would need drivers for the AirCard (no idea, but maybe the Linux drivers [if they are made for the card might work])
You would also need some sort of software to have the AirCard connect to the mobile network and to have the GTab use the Aircard as a means of communication

I have an air-card, as well. It's on my list of to do's but it will be tricky at best.
I had a sierra air-card a few years back, and got it to work with Ubuntu using some ppp commands. I figure that would be the most likely route in Android, since it has some *nix similarities, but I haven't gotten very far.
If you look at "dmesg", your card might be loading up. But the problem is actually getting old modems commands to it to get it running. I think.

YES! Sprint Overdrive 4G! WooHoo!
It'd be a lot easier to try one of the 3G/4G-to-local wireless "boxes" available through many wireless providers (I use MyWi on my jailbroken iPhone 3GS though I'm looking into clear.com's service on the go). That way not only your GTablet, but your laptop and other devices can connect to the same connection and even your friends.
The air card is provided by my employer so I'm kind of stuck with it and getting into a myfi device isn't an option.
It's not really a huge issue I can always tether to my phone, It would just be nice to pop in the card and be up and running. The card also has gps built into it and I could see some use in that too.
I think drivers are going to be the biggest issue the MFG only supports MS and MAC, but there are some threads out on the web were people have gotten them to work in ubuntu. Beyond the driver issue there still needs to be some type of dialing software. On a windows box you can use a simple dialing software and dial a #77 and it will connect.
One other thing that this card has the ability to do is NDIS where the card becomes a network card and as soon as it's inserted into a pc it connects automatically but I'm almost 100% sure that it is still software based.
Thanks for the feed back.

For the ZT-180 tablets we got a number of these going as they looked like serial modem interfaces using ppp via the USB (might need to turn off/disable) any builtin diskstore... there sometimes required a build.prop edit to set the tty correct... I'd normally say look over on Slatedroid at our zt180 section as there were a few threads for different 3G dongles but mostly similar instructions... except slatedroid's been bottom up the last 30 or so hours... the zt-180 thread here is HUGE but I suspect you could find most of the same info scattered throughtout there also as maybe a starting point...

[Q] (Question) No WIFI on HTC HD2 with WP7

Hi everybody,
I installed the WP7, everything seem to work, but no WIFI. Bluetooth works, voice works, camera and video..Everything but WIFI. It just says "searching.." but nothing happens.

I'm from Israel, we don't have the WP7 here yet, so Microsoft IL don't even know what I'm talking about regarding the activation code. Sent mail to the US office, hope it'll go through.

this has been reported to be caused by an incomatible sd card. read HERE through the posts and you will find out more.
I think I read almost every thread possible regarding WP7 wifi. Looked there, will look again. Thanks.
Are you sure IT didnt work and your sdcard is compatible?
If yes try a low WLAN channel instead of a high one, i cant connect to my own WLAN if i use WLAN channel 11-13...dont know why
You could try removing your sd card and rebooting. Bear in mind it will essentially reset to default (new) install. And will format your sd card when inserted again. So be prepared to start from scratch.
Same with me, it found every other wifi except my own one. My solution was to switch off my phone, switch off my wifi. Then switch on my phone. Then switched on my wifi, and it found it.
Worked for me, with out taking out SD Card.

Does A500 support 3G connection?

I bought my a500 in Bangkok. I've heard lots of reports saying that this device doesn't support 3g and it was marked "32g wifi" when I bought it, so I naturally assume it doesn't support 3g connection. However, I find out that the sim card slot does exist besides the micro SD slot, it's just covered by the warranty label.
Does this mean that a500 actually supports 3g connection? If yes, anybody knows how to activate it? I didn't find any option in setting to turn data service on.
A500 with 3g will be the coolest device!
unfortunately according to what i read on the web this model does not support 3G nor does the USB host support a 3G modem;
there is a new model coming out though that does have 3G enabled.
It's pretty clear on the box, manual and specs - WiFi.
USB wimax modem?
Does it support usb Wimax modems?
AFAIK, it does not natively support USB modems.

Don't try to insert a sim card in the slot. Reviews have pointed out that the in the wifi only version the 3g sim slot has NO workings, it's just a big hole down which your sim will vanish, never to be seen again, in addition to this, it will rattle around behind the screen, possibly messing up the internals.
!!!!!!!RESIST THE URGE!!!!!!!
it's impossible that the A500 support 3G natively because the HARDWARE is not here... if you open the device you will see that the
- card reader is missing
- the pcie 3G card is missing
- the pcie slot is missing
- the microchips and resistor are missing
For all the 3G system.
A501 will be the 3G version
A500 is wifi only
32G = 32 GigaBytes and not somehow 3G/2G
zhengyu. where and when did you bought it ?
Mobile Expo or Commart ?
The W500 support 3G modem since it's a windows system.
and the N500 at pantip I really doesn't know what that model does maybe it's the name we give for the 16G version
555, su su.
you can use a phone and tether by wifi or buy a mifi-30 from iFox I think you can got one on 4th floor at pantip plaza

The internal storage isn't an SSD, it's flash modules soldered directly to the motherboard, so no user upgrade on the internal storage. Well, theoretically you could possibly upgrade the flash modules themselves, if you're really REALLY careful and have access to that kind of hardware
Thankfully, since you bought the Acer, you have a full-sized USB2.0 host port on the tablet itself, so you can plug in a nice multi-terabyte external HDD if you really need that much storage. May need to check out this link in the Dev section if you want to plug in an NTFS-formatted USB drive though.
Thanks !!
When I plugged in my cell phone, I see a /dev/ttyACM0 device show up. PPP seems to be also present on the system along with 'chat'. These are the pieces that enable a cell modem connection. So I think eventually someone will be able to tether to their phone or USB modem.
alright, according to varius posts, this "slot" propably is only a black hole
I will not try to insert a sim card any more
Pity on the pad, hope that Acer will have an upgrade plan
all the 3G talk should be close to solved this way.. read this post, and you can use huawei dongle's for 3G now.. it works fine here.. and is fast!

- and the ligths of the modem are OK (blue indicating 3g coverage)
But when I run in terminal ppp-start.sh the messages are:

insmod: can't open 'system/lib/modules/usb_wwan.ko'
insmod: init_module 'system/lib/modules/option.ko' failed (File exists)

but nothing happes with the connection
I've search for the modules and usb_wwan is not there but option.ko is in the correct place.
Is the modem the problem?
Have I to edit the 3g file?
I think the error is before of 3g file is launched.
