Voicemail: "A mandatory update is now avaliable." - EVO Shift 4G General

Anybody get a message about a mandatory voicemail update? I tried updating and it keeps failing.

Yeah I updated it and it installed. It would continue to bug the crap out of me if I kept saying no. Regardless, I use Google voice for voicemail anyways.

Thanks! since you said you got it to update, I figured it would be related to some sprint app I froze in TitaniumBackup. I unfroze it all, rebooted and it updated successfully.

As far as I know every new phone has that mandatory upgrade, my step-son's Transform did, my wife's Shift did and my Hero did after the swap out (and I bet my Shift will when I get it tomorrow). It should work, just don't exit out of the status screen when you're downloading it, if you hit home or go to another app it will fail.

got the same update and installed just fine. Besides the voice to text, not much is new...

it took me 10 or so trys before mine worked. I updated my PLM first before it actually worked. pretty annoying.

Does anyone know if this might undo root? I just got this notification but I don't wanna install any updates til I know its cool for sure

it won't bother root

It will bug you forever with a new "Try our FREE new voicemail to text demo" button on every single voicemail you listen to, though. Wish I could just go back to the old version without hard resetting. It's like having a Sprint ad on every voicemail. (edit: it's free for a month, then $2 a month thereafter)

I was able to delete that little ad just like any other voicemail and don't get bothered by it any more. Do other people have this problem too? I must be just missing it or something.
Edit - I thought you meant the actual message...

I flashed the Evo(Shift)Nonsense rom a couple of days ago and had this same problem with the update failing repeatedly. Eventually I had had enough and on a whim I found the backup of the updated voicemail apk from when I was still on stock and installed it...viola no more nags and the VVM is updated. File attached if you want to try it...

Haha awesome..thanks!

Yep I got this too, on a whim I decided to turn off wifi, then it was able to update *shrugs*

thx ! i been trying to get rid of that nagging mandatory update notifcation all day! finally got vvm working on a GB rom on evo

If you deleted the Sprint Updater app, the upgrade will have a general failure. Toss that apk back into system/apps, reboot, and it updates fine

Thanks alot hdmunger! That .Zip worked for me!

Just letting the 3g download the update has always fixed the issue for me

Can't we fix the MR market issues?

I've wiped my phone and re-run the MR update. All my apps were there but later in the day...boom, gone.
I see that a custom ROM has temporarily fixed the issue
- "1.2c:fixed issue with protected apps not showing up in market reverted displayed version # in phone settings (sprint update is still there though)"
My questions is can't we patch our systems until Google/HTC/Sprint figure this out? Sounds like such a simple fix...
Um, "we" did, which is to say that other people on the forum did it for us. Both current ROMs fix the Market issue.

Yes, but they haven't fixed the bluetooth audio streaming issue which is big for me (as of yesterday.) I'd like to keep things just as they are and patch up the market problem.
It seems to be a problem with the build.prop and build.prop.nopassword file from the Mr update. You could edit the file with the old info from a build.prop files from before the update. Or push a build.prop files to your phone from a stock hero or from the unofficial 1.2 . It couldn't hurt to try. Make sure you have a backup.

Fresh claims that has been fixed.
Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to try Fresh's ROM again.
Just installed Fresh's .06 rom.
Still no go for the market. =(
I installed Fresh's 0.6 over my 1.56 stock install. No wipe. It took about 2hrs but the market snapped back into shape. I also did a reboot around that 2hr mark.
Dunno what triggered it but the moral of the story is I dont think you need to wipe.
I have the factory ROM on my device (its only been rooted) and it seems my paid apps have returned to the my downloads section of the market... hope it keeps
I think at least some of the missing apps are now back. I had MoDaCo ROM and downloaded a new app (free - Silent Time). The next day I un rooted, restored my Nandroid backup, got the MR update and then rooted the Sprint ROM, went to grab that app which I lost when I restored my Nandroid backup and it was gone, until tonight. It was a free app. The app was Silent Time, which before today my search only hit one app which wasn't Silent Time. Now that same search hits 3 apps and includes Silent Time.

*Warning* New Market(Tmo) Is being pushed OTA

The new market will give FC's and stop you from DL'ing apps from the market. The new market from T-Mo has a new tab and isnt compat with any custom rom using test keys.
Care to cite a source for us?
Edit:
As of the... shoot what is it? The second newest CM (The other one seems to have a bad zip file uploaded D: as 3 downloads of the file with identical sizes, none of them are valid/complete) I can still download, update, and run apps from the marketplace. :3 (1:25 AM PST 12/6/09)
this sucks but i dont think it would affect the canadian users.
Had no problem downloading anything on my phone. The only inconvenience really was that it removed the custom Market Icon as well as the Downloads tab and replaced it with a T-Mobile tab. There was another small nuisance where old app that I have backed up and had installed using an app manager are now showing up as having an update available (I have them backed up and install them manually because updates have crippled the app, so I obviously don't want the update).
There is a very simple way to revert back to the old market. Menu>Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Market>Uninstall Updates.
Note, your old apps will still show up as having updates available, if you have installed backups from your sd card. Uninstalling, rebooting, and reinstalling did not work for me.
I have g1 with cyanogen 4.2.8 and run partioned sd card for my apps. I just went to the market after reading this and had 5 updated apps. updated and installed all with no problems.
Will have to admit that I am not clear what the orginial post was about or what he is actually trying to say. My understanding is that tmobile is trying to go after the rooted phones out there?

Nope... I'm on Dwang's v1.13 and got the update. No issues with downloading apps. T-mobile isn't trying to mess with rooted phones...just pushing T-mo specific stuff to our phones to "add value" to our Market experiences. I think Verizon does similar stuff on the Eris and Droid.
I am unable to install after the update, it will download, then force close upon installation attempt. I have to remove the update (setting, manage applications) each time I want to download from the market. Yes, it keeps updating on its own after each uninstall.
Nope, T-Mobile is not going after rooted phones. The new market update allows you to get paid apps and have them billed to your phone bill, rather then using Google Check Out. I think Sprint and Verizon are doing the same thing as well, but T-Mobile was the first to implement.

Since uninstalling the update using the method I posted, the Market update has not been reappied by T-Mobile. I think you might have other problems.

I don't think Mlign's Hero rom will get it since it's a 1.5 firmware... but I may be wrong.
I'm saying that because I haven't had a map update yet with the nav option.
I've had Market 1660 since it leaked about a week ago.
The only new tab that I notice is the one that says T-Mobile where it used to say Downloads.
Those that are gettinc FC's should try to get a logcat and maybe try clearing their cache. If that doesn't work then do a backup using nandroid then try pulling the /system/app/Vending.apk file, resign it and then push it back and see if it works then. That may be the reseason why mine works and none of yours do because I've included the newer version in my CHM Theme. However I don't have the alternate form of payment (onto the T-Mobile bill) as of yet. I just bought something domestic ($.99) and the only option that I had through Google Checkout was credit card. Those that have the new market (1660)... do you have any other payment options?

I'm wondering if it's something that T-Mobile has to activate themselves?
And I don't think that CM is going to do anything because of the C&D that he recieved after he released the 1.6 Market prematurely onto 1.5 devices.

probably though i dont know why theyre being so quiet about it, i would think if it comes to messing with your money they would at least make sure everyone knows so they dont accidentally do buy something then see it on there bill(it could happen! lol)
and i was hoping maybe cm would suggest like a work around or a solution. well, i dont really need the new market.. dont like the new category(there suggestions suck) and i actually like the google checkout! do you think there are any side effects from uninstalling the new market?

How Do I Get Rid Of Sprint Voice Mail - It Just Won't Go

Yesterday I got the mandatory Sprint Voice to text update. This really upset me as the main reason I rooted my phone was to get rid of the bloat ware. So now I have Sprint nagware to deal with. So today I installed and set up the Google Voice Mail program and it works really nice. So I decided to delete/uninstall the Sprint Voice Mail Program. I used Titanium back up and I deleted the program. Everything still works well so I figured it was gone and that was that. Later I looked in my app drawer and was surprised to see that the icon for the sprint voice mail was still there. So I tried to drag it into the garbage and it wouldn't go. So I go into root explorer and to to system>app and go down the list looking for a sprint widget that I needed to get rid of and didn't find one. I also made sure that the sprint voice mail program wasn't in there either. So I shut off the phone and started it again figuring that the program was still in memory. Well after the reboot the program is still on my phone and now it's acting like it's a brand new account and asking me if I want to set it up. So this comes to my question how do I get rid of the Sprint Voice Mail. I can't find it in my system folder so what's going on? Anyone else experience this???
Help is always appreciated............
Lisa
You can try to mount your system and remove it via Terminal Emulator. Its a pretty simple process with only a few commands if you want to have a go that route.

It's a system app, updatecore.apk or such
Not sure what updatecore.apk is but as you pointed out it's probably a big deal.
Driving home from work today I was thinking about all this and then it dawned on me that I didn't really delete the Sprint Voicemail app as I thought. Earlier I was using Titanium and I was about to delete the Sprint voice mail app when I realized that it was telling me it was going to delete "Data" only. So in reality I only deleted the Voicemail data and not the entire program. You are probably correct that this program is securely nestled within the core of the Android/HTC/Sprint package. Truly amazing as this may be one of those things that you cannot get rid of. Unless it resides in it's own .apk somewhere and I can target that one program I'm very hesitant at this point to go after it. The interesting thing about deleting the data is it seems to have reverted back to the older version. A box came up after I rebooted the phone asking me if I wanted to personalize my voice mail like I did the first time months ago. Plus being it's not technically "working" as it's not personalized the sprint genie can't target me for upgrade as it doesn't know I'm using it. What do you think of that idea?
So here is where I am. I have the Google voice mail working and it's a very cool little program. I have a "Google phone number" that is free and actually works but I don't have to do anything about it as my original phone number works the voice mail just fine. So in reality I may have beaten Sprint to at least a draw on this one................
So to recap, I would say, if you don't want the voice to text sprint app you could go into Applications and delete the "DATA" and then it doesn't know who you are. Just leave the sprint voice mail application in the "unsetup state" and the monster "Mandatory Update" can't find you. You have effectively turned off the sprint voice mail that way and then you can install a third party like Google voice mail or You mail or anything you want.
Give me you take on this idea. I think this is whats going on and this may be the only fix to opt out of the Sprint program.................
For future reference, all system (non-deletable) applications are located in /system/app. Use Root Explorer to go there and delete them. I think what he meant was to delete the Sprint Updater, which I think is Sprint_Updater.apk, also in that folder.

Ok.... I thought it was something VMCore.apk
I don't remember. I deleted it and put it back with the name "Sprint_VM.apk". Doesn't matter what it's named, but I think you're right about "VMCore.apk".
Okay Gentlemen, I have looked for all those files and the only one that is there is the Sprint_Updater.apk. Nothing there that has a VM or VVM or Sprint VVM or anything like that. I am running the .6 version of the Sprint stock 2.1. But I believe I have it disable for now. As I wrote previously by deleting the data file I have essentially not activated the program. If you do come up with the file to delete that would take the VVM with it I will certainly give it a try but there is nothing in the system>app folder that looks even close.
I so appreciate you taking you time to weigh in on this problem.

See above, delete that to get rid of SVVM for good
Well Gentlemen, again I just went though that directory vary carefully again and there is nothing that even comes close to a VVM or "voice mail" reference at all. It's simply not there.
Have you guys deleted this off your phones before? I guess you all are running some other Rom then the stock one so you haven't faced this mandatory update thing. But the files you are suggesting to remove are not in that directory. As I mentioned the Updater is there in two versions Sprint Updater and just plane Updater.
I don't believe this issue is worth you flashing the stock rom just to check it but that is a real offer and I appreciate that. I admire you guys that flash these phones just for the heck of it. When I have flashed the phone it makes my heart stop.
But thank you for all your responses. I certainly appreciate it........

Still, it should be removable Is it hiding in data/app or data/app-private for some reason?
Okay, you guys aren't going to believe this. But I rebooted the phone and I checked the data/app and the data/app-private. Found nothing in there. Then I went back to the app drawer and the offending program is GONE! I can't find any vestige of it anywhere. So I gather mission accomplished! I don't know what happened as earlier I did the reboot twice and pulled the battery each time and the third time was the charm for some reason. The only file I didn't remove was the Sprint_updater.apk. It's still there. But I have turned off the updates so I shouldn't be bothered by that either..............

Any idea where the updated .apk would be? I pulled this one from /system/apps
You can open Voicemail then press the menu button and scroll down to check for update. I just tried it and it began to download, I'm in a ****ty area and it was taking forever so I had to cancel, but the option is there.
Here you go. This was pulled from my Titanium Backup. I checked the AndroidManifest.xml file just to be sure and it is indeed the update.

sprint voicemail on the 935U software

Hey, any of you root people, could you pull the voicemail apk off your phone so I can use it with my flashed universal phone? Have tried the s6 edge software but no go. Thank you
This is simple through titanium backup. No one?
The one on official firmware will not install correctly. But this is an older one that works. Download and install like normal.

Yes.
Thanks again seems to be working
Once you set up, it may take a while to actually activate. I just left the app, came back to it 5-10 min later, and it was running normally.
Ya took me almost an hr. Worked well though. Downloaded many that didn't work. Just needed 1 that did.
It doesn't appear to actually work. You all just think it is.
If you leave a vm it wont download it (or mine doesn't seem to).
If you go into settings and pref, it shows it's not verified still also. You just stopped seeing the prompt because once the screen times out it is no longer on top but if you fully kill the app and re-open it still says verifying.
These are my findings at least? If you go into settings and pref does it say you're verified?
Yeah I couldn't get it to work either
Didn't work for me either
Try this one it worked for me on my unbranded piece o sh!t locked bootloader s7 edge with the added ticking timebomb feature.

On a side note samsung got what they deserve for [email protected] us usa s7 owners. I hope they lose tons of money

Are you sure?
I've got the same issues all the others did. It can't activate. Just because it stops popping it up doesn't mean it's activated now either. That message suppresses after a while.
It seems to tie into something that it and Sprint Zone use from what I can tell and thus why won't work on these non-branded firmwares.
Leave yourself a VM and see if it shows up...
It usually wouldn't go past the account verification at all. I'm not 100 %sure yet. But it did go farther than before and I'm trying it out now to verify. Will get back
If you press home and go back into it the app will hide the message but it still wont work.
I actually found the outbound activation messages in it that are failing to send even.
So this is another bust.
I think our best luck is if someone can either reverse eng. this thing to modify it to not try to use whatever sprint bloat it's looking for or we find what it's looking for and find a way to put it on our phones.
Sadly it's not a new issue. All the Nexus people have had the issue from day 1. And it seems to be only sprint because they won't make a darn public compatible app.
I can't use GVoice as I already use it for a second number and I don't like any of the third party ones that make you use conditional call forwarding to them to do this...
Another question for you all. I've noticed if NO voicemail app is installed I do not get any notification I have voicemails. If I do install one (despite it not working) I get notified because it says pending voicemail download at least.
With no VM App installed are your phones telling you that you got VM?
Yeah same boat here man. Looks like we beating a dead horse
Yea, Sprint should upload visual voicemail to the Play Store like T-Mobile does. So stupid.

Can anyone post the Sprint VM app for Nougat?
