Touch wiz - Fascinate General

I feel like I am in an extreme minority of people that love touchwiz. I used to have a droid with stock ui, a droid 2 with blur, and have extensively used sense on family members phones and touchwiz by far blows them out of the water... There are a lot of intuitive features I can't believe I lived without like setting controls on the notification bar and a redial button after calling. I also find it much more aesthetically pleasing than other UIs, and really does SAMOLED justice with its vibrant colorization.
What do you folks think?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

I actually like touch wiz too, I've used adw and launcher pro and I keep going back to touch wiz. I'm using the one from the vibrant from this forum somewhere because I couldn't stand the app drawer not being in alphabetical order lol. But since I have that version, I love it.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

I can't stand that either! Are there any disadvantages though? I thought vibrant users couldn't uninstall apps from the tray (another feature I love, no more waiting for application data to load from the settings screen, which is a major time sink).

Can one of y'all give me a recent version of tw? I've searched, but to no avail :[ and I would love to try it!

I've been hooked on touchwiz since my omnia 2. I've tried the moto droid, and found it much less pleasant to use, and found htc's ui unpleasant, as well.

It's fun pulling the apk's and changing the icons. And when the icon backgrounds and replaced with blank files the app drawer doesn't look like that apple thing anymore.
good day.

Exactly! Jsut came back from an eris, droid 1, and evo. Touchwiz is by far the best one for me... also I noticed on sense there were a lot of glitches like when someone would call me their id would show a toally different facebook friend as their picture lol

I thought I was the only one... I rooted tried a couple of roms but I end up back to touch wiz.... it works wonders... now if we can get a froyo version of touch wiz I would be happy... anybody know where I can get the touch wizard from the vibrant to this one so that my apps can be in order
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

I've had the Fascinate since it was released and have tried every home replacement, but they have never lasted more than a couple of hours at the most. TW has great widgets, is very responsive and like someone said, without those backgrounds on the icons, it looks nothing like an i*hone interface.
I'm really looking forward to both the froyo and gingerbread ports that birdman and kaos are working on, but I have to say that I will miss TW.

.....
@chopper.....Hey...is that single clock/date/weather widget on your homescreen?
it looks really good.
I hope un-rooted phone like mine can have one.

I don't use TouchWiz, but I would agree it's actually not bad at all as a launcher. Obviously, the Fascinate version has some problems (no Google Search widget etc.) but the Vibrant version is pretty darn good. I even like TouchWiz's taskbar more than the regular Android style. And some features, like the ability to re-sort homescreens, are fantastic (an almost identical method was implemented later on in ADW).
Some of Samsung's TouchWiz extras, on the other hand, are truly terrible. Like their "SNS Sync", which is slow and buggy and unnecessary when the official Facebook and Twitter apps come with their own, flawless in-app sync capabilities. Yet, inexplicably, TouchWiz disables their built-in sync abilities so you're stuck with Samsung's implementation. That right there is the single biggest reason I can't wait for an AOSP ROM.
P.S. maturate: That clock/weather widget looks like the one from Beautiful Widgets, an app available on the Market. It's just a regular app, doesn't matter if you're rooted.
EDIT: It could also be Fancy Widget, actually. The cloud graphic is identical to Beautiful Widgets', though, so I'm guessing it's that.

I used TouchWiz for a long time before I finally moved in to adw. I actually like the Vibrant version of TouchWiz more and ran it on my fascinate for a while. I posted the apk in the theme app forum. I liked their vertical scrolling app drawer more.

Most of the problems with TW launcher are fixed in gtg's modded version (see i9000/Captivate forums).
Unfortunately, it only works with Froyo.

My launcher of choice is Go Launcher.
Touchwiz for me was way to laggy. It seemed to be in slow motion compared to mine now. Mainly scrolling through screens.

I'm on Kaosinate, and I do miss TouchWiz. I hated it at first, but now, I think it's the best manufacturer UI. It looks iPhone-y, sure, but it has tons of cool little features and animations that make a difference. And it's smooth. Is it even possible to use TW on Kaosinate?

Replacing stock launcher

I was thinking back to before froyo, when it was good practice in Nexus tweaking to replace the stock launcher.apk in system/app with a modded or third party launcher. I'm not sure if this would be a good bet or not with all the touch wiz integration on my fascinate. Can anyone clue me in on whether this would be worth a shot?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Ha. Answered my own question. Moved the adw launcher file from data/app to system/app, then removed the two TouchWiz30Launcher files from system/app. Phone went bonkers with both launchers force closing continuously. Did a hard shut down, and on start up, everything is great.
ADW is the default launcher, touchwiz is gone, and no evident problems at all so far. Will do more testing and post if anything borks.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
What do you gain by doing that? I don't seem to be suffering any ill effects by having LauncherPro as default, and leaving TouchWiz alone. I'm assuming it's running somewhere in the background, but isn't hurting anything. In fact, I'm wondering if some of the TouchWiz apps like the dialer and such require it to be running. If I'm wrong, and removing TouchWiz not only can be done safely, but also produces some benefit, please let us know.

Doesn't affect anything else system wise that I've found, and I've been looking. The main benefit is speed. The stock launcher runs regardless if in system/app, I just don't see it. I suspect battery use as well, but surely negligible. You don't have access to the samsung widgets, but I dislike them anyway, and ported them out. The net responsiveness of my phone is pretty impressive. For the first time I'm not missing my Nexus. Missing froyo though.
I did also disable all the other integrated social networking syncing, mostly for battery life reasons. I can't stand unnecessary crap running in the background.
End of it is that from what I have seen so far, ADW is a lot faster, more functional, and has less battery usage than stock.

Hmm, well I've of the opinion that if it ain't broke, you don't fix it, so I think I'll leave LauncherPro in the /data/app folder. It's so fast already, I probably wouldn't even notice whatever speed boost it may get by moving it. Thanks for testing though!

You wouldn't happen to have a list of the items you've removed, would you? Do you think Angel's Odin /system restore would fix your phone should you accidentally wreck it (because I would like to do this too)?
Just tried this with Launcher Pro, and can confirm the results. I have to re-install my non-LP widgets, but that's expected.
To allow for any future backtracking, I simply renamed the TouchWiz30Launcher files with a ".bak" extension, so if things go south, I can just adb in and rename them back.
Nice find!
Out of curiosity, the samsung lockscreen is still there correct?

Just got this phone last night. Rooted, lag fix and am running LauncherPro Plus. I kinda actually like some of the Samsung widgets but not enough for me to keep that launcher. They did some good things with it but it does slow the phone down.
If you replace/remove the Touchwiz launcher do you lose the pulldown notification bar at the top with the WIFI/etc toggles?
I use launcherpro now and would remove Touchwiz just for the sake of removing it, but I don't want to lose the pulldown notification bar with toggle icons included in it.
Oh if i lose my touchwiz widgets there is no point. I love the daily breifing widget and the scrolling twitter widget. Ill pass!

Nope. The notification bar is not part of the launcher. Only the home screens and app drawers are launcher based.

This post seems to have fudged up? I can't see the list of removed bloat with nill for side affects. I'm looking to root and do the lagfix tonight but would also like to know what I can get rid of with no harm to my device. I'm comfortable with adb and what not but I still panic when my phone is acting improperly I'm far from an expert I'm more of a cut and paste kind of guy if you catch my drift

Is anyone else wondering the same thing about the verizon Samsung fascinate ?

I recently bought the Verizon Samsung fascinate, and so far its a good phone, how ever I do notice acouple of odd things about it. On the corner left top side of the phone there appears to be a front facing camera and LED notification light, maybe I might sound retarded for saying This but, it doesn't work. I'm wondering is it because Verizon crippled the function, or is it because I just haven't figuered it out yet? I'd appreciate any comments regarding these two misteries.

Fascinate has a better processor, better gpu, and better memory. The display is better, though the resolution is slightly higher on the X, it's a slightly larger screen, so its a wash. X has more mp, but the camera as well as photo quality are better on the fascinate. This is better hardware. I'll admit I'm not a fan of touch wiz, but we have no bombs bolt into our phones, so development should come faster and stronger.

from what ive seen.. the launcher pro plus widgets are similar to the htc ones.. i paid the $3 or so and i think its worth it... ive been using LP for a while now so i didnt mind throwing the dev a couple dollars for support.
beautiful widgets is a very nice clock/weather widget... its pay too.. but again, i dont mind paying for good support.
I've always preferred the Weather & Toggle Widget to Beautiful Widgets. Beautiful Widgets is the trendy pick, but Weather & Toggle Widget + the H7C skin is a better mimic of HTC Sense than the Beautiful flip clock widget (the fonts are more accurate and it has the correct top margin which Beautiful lacks--their's crashes right into the notification bar, which is incorrect). I own both but I regret Beautiful Widgets, even though it's more popular.

The Droid X's resolution is 854x480, versus the Fascinate's 800x480. Bigger? Yes. Bigger enough that you'd ever notice the difference? Not likely. Plus, there's no getting around the "just the right size" feeling of the Fascinate. Oh, and the function buttons are terrible on the Droid X. I find it ironic that a phone that's so huge would have buttons that are so small, making them hard to press. I played with one in a store, and was NOT impressed.

So much truth. I had the Droid X since it launched and recently sold it on ebay for the Samsung Fascinate. Its a million times better. Nothing really wrong with the Touch Wiz interface but the samsung widgets are garbage.

Droid2/DroidX style dock for launcherpro.

I'm trying to convince my cousin that launcherpro will make his phone faster compared to the stock blur launcher. But, he didn't like the way it looked when I first downloaded it, so he made me set blur back. I need a .png file that is the style of the droid x/ droid 2 blur dock. Google turns up nothing. If I can get that image, I'll put launcherpro back on his droid 2 r2d2, and he'll think he's on blur, but I'll be doing him a favor.
Thanks in advance!

On the Droid X, can you change the apps in the app drawer? I know it comes with phone on the left, app drawer in the middle, and browser on the right. Can you change these to different apps and can you add more than just 2 apps + appdrawer to this motoblur dock? Thanks!

Something else to consider; ADW Launcher does allow you to change the size of the dock icons. They go from pretty tiny to absurdly large, with everything in between.
On a completely unrelated note...why would a 10 year old kid care how fast his phone is? What could he possibly be using it for that you're dedicated to speeding it up for him?

Unfortunately I don't know anything about it, I just saw it recommended on another forum and it came to mind when I saw your post.

Launcher Pro vs. Sense

I've searched the other forums and read through them; however, I want a more updated take, especially people using the HTC Evo, which do you prefer and why?
Are the speeds that much better? Do you miss the sense widgets? Did you eventually adjust or did you have that feeling in the back of your rom that it wasn't the same?
Thanks in advance!
I prefer Launcher Pro, don't miss the sense widgets, just the flip clock.
I like some of the built in aspects of sense, the better integration with Facebook pics, and so forth (missing that since I have rooted and installed Deck's ROM..Facebook App just doesn't seem as nice in syncing them).
However for interface, Launcher Pro has been my toy of choice for at least 9 months.
I used launcher pro exclusively on all Rom.
Until I loaded a sense 3.0 rom. That interface is just so nice.
Haven't gone back to LP

Same with me. I kept waiting for that next great promised LP to come out, but he's not getting it done. Sense 3.0 is here and pretty good. LP next gen is vaporware.
I run lp with aosp and sense, which I rarely use, I keep sense launcher

Cm7+ adwEX = epic... Love it
You have so much more freedom, and though I do miss aspects of sense, I have been able to replace them in some form or another over time... If I were not rooted and rommed I would personally stick with sense, they really did a great job!!!!!

I use LauncherPro with the FancyWidget that looks like the Sense clock.
Best of both worlds for me, since I love the flip clock.

I trked using adw ex and I did not like it.. every time you choose an app in appdrawer, it takes you to homescreen and then to app

I wasn't even aware of this until you said that. I had to open an app real quick to verify.
+1 on sticking with sense 3.0 after I found virus b1.4 I'd try a new version of LP though
I use Launcher GO EX, but I used to have Launcher Pro. I prefer that over Sense 2.0. I can't wait until 2.3.3 is rooted, so I can use Sense 3.0.

Sense is nice for the widgets, but LP is way faster and smoother once you tweak with the settings.

Faster...maybe by milliseconds....
Smoother? Not the case with the ROM i use. The carousel for home pages and the albums is perfect. I'm still not over spinning it just for the heck of it
LauncherPro Plus all the way. Scrolling dock, looping homescreens, nice transitions. I don't miss Sense at all. I use Pure Calendar and Pure Agenda, both fullscreen, and a few shortcuts. Plus I use an AOSP ROM, so Sense is a distant memory for me.
I use Launcher Pro on my GTablet and after reading this thread, I may try it on my EVO too.
running asop right now so using launcher pro otherwise i really like new sense 3.0

Yeah I think people are comparing LP plus to sense 2 or 2.1 without having actually installed a 3.0 rom.
Look at what SilverZero said...how can Sense 3.0 be a distant memory? Good working roms have only been out for a little over a month.
If you like it and it ain't broke don't fix it. But this thread is sounding a little fanboy-ish when people haven't actually used both.
SPB shell 3D is best, but the cost was a downer.
It all depends on the mood that I'm in. Lol

Just disabled them to see what I get.. Cant hurt i guess lol
Hate to split hairs, but disabling is not removing. Will making sure these dont inadvertantly start up and chew on cpu and memory help performance? Possibly. But removal also gets you that much needed storage back.

That list is probably about 100-200 MB of storage. Are you really that starved that 0.1-0.2 GB makes a difference?
Does anybody know how to remove the Verizon pre-loaded contacts? It's been mentioned that Verizon has locked them down, too. You used to be able to delete them but not anymore. I remember that you can freeze com.partnerbookmarks (apologies if that file name isn't 100% accurate) on older phones to get rid of the carrier-provided bookmarks and was wondering if there was something similar to get rid of the Verizon contacts. Not a dealbreaker, but just curious.

You can't remove them. But, in People, menu, contacts to display, hit customize, then disable the Verizon Wireless preset contacts.

That's good enough for me - thanks so much!!
This is my list. Some of them are needed for the Moto launcher but I use Nova Prime. Everything seems stable after removing them.

Has anyone rooted and removed bloat apps?? If so did you compile a list that can be posted. I know we have rw access now but I am not 100% sure what needs to be removed. Really I just wanna get rid of the amazon stuff and some of the little bloat apps like city and migrate and audible

I'm rooted..but I haven't removed anything yet....I have the system dump on my computer so I'm going to experiment.. Problem is that once you delete apps...it breaks OTA updates... Once we get a custom recovery and Roms..this won't be a problem.. Hope to get a working 4.3 soon

Im actually very happy with it stock as is. I would love bootloader unlock only because everyphone i've had was able to be. Im loving active display and touchless control. The camera is great compared to what i had (droid razr hd). Using the Xposed framework allowed me to have the little UI tweeks i like. I would just love a stock 5x5 or 4x5 launcher. I would use nova and always did on AOSP, but I like the Circles widget, it just will not work with 3rd party launchers. Wish we could figure that out too

Yeah let's get this thread going on a detailed list of what can be frozen or removed now that we have root. I despise the vzw backup assistant!

I'm the same way.. I went from a Motorola electrify to a gs3 on uscc and was excited to finally do what I wanted with my device but with the radio problems of the Samsung devices I opted for Motorola device when switching to Verizon. I do miss that I cannot use my SD card and I only have 11 gigs of free space but I have awesome coverage no dropped calls and now my gs3 is more of an mp3 and game device.

So...does disabling a bunch of apps do the same thing as freezing them?
I was able to go through and disable most if not all of the bloat on this phone and I guess I just assumed it was taken off line. Is that not the case? If it is the case, I highly recommend it as it doesn't screw you out of future stuff.
