Currently using CM7 and I'm not really happy with the camera picture quality (with any rom). Not looking for another app to replace the stock one. I'm interested in tweaking the contrast, saturation, sharpness, exposure, and white balance to produce the optimal picture quality.
So my question is what settings are you using to produce top quality images from the camera?
I've pretty much given up on this phone providing a decent photograph. My BlackBerry Pearl took better shots tbh.

I would like an optimal setup for the camera as well.
There is no such thing as optimal exposure and white balance settings. It depends on the conditions. For instance, increasing exposure will help in low light situations, but will make the photo look overexposed in brighter situations. Picking the white balance setting that corresponds to the type of light typically looks better than auto, but the wrong one will look terrible.
Taking good photos is an art, and it takes practice. Its not just a matter of picking a couple of catch-all settings.
Also, many poorly lit photos can be corrected after-the-fact pretty well using easy apps like Vignette or Picsay Pro.

Silly me, I want non blurry photos quickly and easily. It's a cell phone, not a high end standalone camera.
Snapping a quick pic of something is what a lot of people use their phone camera for. Having to fiddle with exposure, shutter speed, light balancing, etc every time is a pain.
Anyone know of a camera app that does better than stock for general pics?

Vignettes auto focus and auto white bal etc is pretty good, my choice over stock app, though it takes hella longer to process images as it doesnt compress them as much.
Although the number one cause for blurry pics is a fingerprinted cam lens, always give it a wipe once and a while.

Thanks, I'll give Vignette a whirl.
Re: blur, I guess I meant noisy more than blur. I keep the lens clean. The images just don't come out crisp/clean unless I'm outside and it's high noon with not a cloud in sight.

I tried the stock app on CM 6.1, Vignette, and Camera 360 all shooting the same indoor shot under fluorescent lighting. Camera 360 had the sharpest and best coloring of any of the three. I use it now as my main camera app. I don't know if it's the best, but it's the one I like the most.

What that person said, about the #1 cause of blurry pics being fingerprints, is hogwash. The main reason for blurry photos is an aperture that is too small, and ISO that is too low for the lighting conditions, resulting in the shutter having to stay open longer to capture the image. This allows more time for the camera or subject to move while the shutter is open, which causes a blurry photo.

Photos can also appear noisy or over-processed. This is due to the camera trying to increase the ISO (light sensor sensitivity), or manually increasing the ISO, to compensate for low lighting.
Point and shoot cameras try to do the work for you by automatically adjusting the aperture, ISO, and shutter speed. So the recommendation for a different camera app (which all handle these adjustments slightly differently) is probably a good place to start if you aren't comfortable making the adjustments manually (and its often not convenient).
But practice and understanding how cameras work goes a lot farther. You'd be surprised at how much you can improve your photos with simple tricks that don't involve camera settings. Just slightly shifting the point of focus can significantly improve the amount of light entering the lens. Or bracing the camera/phone on a stationary object (like a piece of furniture, or a building column) to create an impromptu tripod, can control the camera jitter just enough to get a less blurry photos in low light.

Interesting read, thanks for linking it. Although to clarify your comment, some of the options discussed on the guide aren't available on non-Sense ROMs. But those on Sense have all the options available.
Also interesting to see the Desire and Desire HD cameras compared side-to-side to the iPhone 4. I know the camera on the Desire Z (or even my older Touch Pro 2) is decidedly better than the iPhone 3GS. My wife owns a 3GS, and she is always commenting on how much better the photos taken by my phone are. But I know Apple made some improvements to the camera for the iPhone 4, so I was wondering how things netted out. While the Desire Z was not specifically compared, its newer than the Desire (and same MP), while being the same generation as the HD (but the HD is 8 MP). So I'm just guessing the Desire Z falls somewhere in between the two in photo quality.
Nothing beats the iPhone 4 when it comes to the camera and the photo/videos - I'm jumping ships when the iPhone 4S hits T-Mobile!

What i dont like about the cam is the noise. at first (scaled to fit the screen) it looks very good. once you transfer it to your pc and view the normal size, noise is all over.
any setting to reduce that? ISO?

I've got to say that the camera on this thing is the one thing I was disappointed with when moving from my Nokia N95 8gb. That thing had the best camera I've EVER seen on a phone, and I think it was a combination of a better sensor and a considerably better (and larger) lense. This thing takes decent pictures, and they actually look good when printing in like a 4x6 or smaller, but the quality overall is pretty disappointing. I've given up on getting better pictures out of it and just take what I can.

You have any proof to back that statement up? Because the side-by-side comparison in the linked guide above clearly shows the photos on both the old Desire, and the Desire HD are significantly superior to photos taken on the iPhone 4, for indoor conditions.

Cm7 already has a built in mod to allow you to take pictures in 720p and you can activate deblur fhor our unsteady hands. Its in the settings tab of the camera on cm7 just scroll down a little

Everyone says the camera quality is one of the best features of the galaxy s but I think its pretty terrible. All pictures took look dark and don't look clear when you zoom in. Who else thinks the camera is poor on this phone

can't confirm that. As long as there is a good light, the pictures will turn out great. Compared to other 5mpx shooters I really like the Galaxy S one.
Yep i also like the quality in comparison to other 5mp cams. what suxx is that there is no led flash, but i think we all knew that before bying this phone

and i do not recognize sgs1 5mpx camera as good - as said especialy when it is not much light pictures comes gradient - it is ok but still should perform better
i do not recal such on my goof old lost nokia n95 with its optics
same as with gps here looks like sgs1 was assembled from som low cost parts overall
that is why i am sceptic on sgs2 (tested it few times) and looking formward to 3rd revision of samsung look onsmartphone for masses =)
(sgs got gps chip not broadcom bot lirf or something like this that performs way better but camera still records/pics gradient in dark)

Are you viewing the pictures on the phone in gallery? Or in another app on your phone? Or on your computer?
The reason this is important is that when using gallery app, our phones only loads a half resolution version image (to make it easier and snappier to handle)! You can download other image viewer apps in the market that view the full resolution on phone and therefore allow better zooming in to the resulting images.
Also the pictures therefore look better on the computer too, as this also using the full resolution on the image.
So, your problem might be more the gallery app at fault rather than the camera itself. Do some tests of your own to see if this is true.
I am no expert on this topic, but I remember reading this somewhere, and my tests confirm it appears to be true! (YMMV!)

I'm sure that you must have some of the settings wrong on the camera App, because I have loaded pics to my computer, cropped the unwanted portion and printed on A4 paper. The resulting print was as good as I ever get with any 5mp camera.
I have also sent both pictures and video to my 55" TV screen from my SGS, using Allshare, and the quality is on a par with HD TV.
I agree that you get more versatility with a dedicated camera, but you've got to remember that the SGS is a phone with a camera as an accessory, not a camera that makes phone calls.
Finally, why do people complain about the lack of LED flash, at best, it's only useful up to a metre, but we all knew that the SGS did not have LED camera flash before we bought the phone.

N95 had 5mp dude i also had this phone and pics were really good, but anyway pics taken outside while its sunny with galaxy s show even better results in my opinion

It's good enough for me. Just make sure you are on 5mpx my phone likes to go back to 0.3mpx for some reason. oh and you should at least be on 2.2, heard that produces better pictures
UPDATE Comparison Pics with Galaxy S4 and 808pv added
I Really got frustrated by how they review cameras in web sites.
Although am not a photographer but atleast i know the basics and photography is my hobby.
First if all; What made me write (type!) This post because i noticed that many maanyyy dont know how to deal with this beast inside ?
So i have owned every well made camera phone till i settled with the one. I used the 808 pureview the N8 S3 and S4 also the Note2 so the pris and cons for each i passed through till am satisfied now with the One.
So first what is UltraPixel. Its a big sized pixel 2 micron which allow it to be able capturing more light than usual. Just for comparison the iphone5s pixel size is 1.5 micron (was adv. As super light sensitive)
Pixels and sensor size are directly proportional the bigger size of both the better light performance. So basically more megapixels (13) with the same sensor size mostly used (1/3") means smaller pixel size so lower light sensitivety and more noisy capture.
Most phone makers to get bright low light pics they raise the iso. Raising iso really gives more bright image but with more noise. So the right formula is to long expose the sensor to more light with bigger pixel size to get the perfect shot.
The draw back is the long exposure the slower shutter so the more blurred pics you have.
Htc added optical image stabilizer to compensate for hand shakes during longer exposure time to get blur free pics.
So Htc One is getting very near to the perfect formula a bigger pixel size (but same small sensor) with ois and some how longer exposures to get a better low light performance.
So why didnt they put a larger sensor with more pixel and join the megapixel race? The point is a big camera bump at the back as the 808pv or lumia1020 which ruins the beauty of the phone.
Htc one went for fewer pixel to allow a bigger size on the same thin and small sensor adequate for cellphone.
This very long introduction was mandatory just for everyone to know what to read when comparing cell phone camera spec.
F 2.0 means wider basically wider aperature to receive light so faster capture. So now we have a device with
Ultra big pixel f2.0 and ois
With my trials with the one to get the best pic i found that it works best with touch to focus
So just touch the area you want the phone to focus then tab the shutter button.
I found that the phone uses a matrix or centre focus metering mode by default. So you may find your self getting a very bright over exposed pic. Just touch to where you want and the metering mode will turn to Spot meter mode. Example is the lamp pic. First the phone used a centre weighted metering mode but to spot the lamp i touch to focus the lamp and its clear now.
The htc one flash is amazing. Its the only flash i used in phones that preserve the human skin tine perfectly not blue washed as samsungs or yellow washed as iphones. Try it and u will be amazed.
The flash is very strong really strong u may say double the S4 power! It never failed me. (But no near to xenon)
The Night mode in the htc one apply longer exposure time and lowers the iso to get a perfect clear bright night shot. The only draw back is u have to be steady even with the ois and be sure to touch focus on what you want and notice the focus. .. once it locked correctly press the shutter.
There is also l0ck af/exposure feature. Long press on area and the phone will lock the focus and exposure so you can talk dramatic nice shots!
The htc one captures videos @60 fps i dont know why all reviewers dont mention it while they mention it say for the note3 as a premium feature! The htc one captures 720p @60fps thats a very fluid hd video recording try it.
I like how they decided to go 720p instead of the 1080p for the @60fps cause the file size for the 1080p will be amazingly huge that u may find your self filling your 32gb version in alittle period if time.
The hd recording is just fine plenty of details and balanced video file size.
So the point is touch to focus then the shutter.
In video mode the focus is locked so to not let the phone hunts for focus every now and then. But if u want to let hunt for focus turn this feature off (not recommended in low light)
ironically the reviewers when comparing with other phones the point the device to focus during video comparison and sure its locked by default then they say mmm... Failed to focus bad camera ??
Other reviewers take a shot in dim conditions and say mmm.... The one didnt light up the scene as phone x.. . Thats because pointing the phone into bright direct point turns to spot metering it and dims the scene down ... ?? why you dont just touch focus and see the magic! I dont know!

You forgot to mention all the people with defective (or so we would hope) cameras. Some issues include: Purple tint in the picture, noise, inability of the camera to focus in dim settings, inability of the camera to focus at long distances, inability to focus on one side of the picture, inability to stabilize etc.
Moral of the story: if you are extremely lucky, you can get your hands on a perfect One and you'll have a great camera. For the rest of us, nothing has changed.
And does it record at 60 fps by default? I thought you had to select Fast HD from the settings for that.

the camera sure will not focus in pitch black cause due to the lack of auto-focus assist light
and yes in very dim conditions it takes many trials about 5 times to get the perfect focus point.
up in the boat pics my previous S4 failed to focus. it focused only after many trials on the moon.
Sometimes it focus automatic but you will have to re-focus again by touch focus. thats too in all cameras. All this issues in dim conditions not in bright light.
the purple tint i saw some sadly affected with it and heard that in the rolling out update 4.3 will be fixed. And yes my screen turns Red when i cover the lens with my hand.
No the 60fps isn't default but its very nice to have it specially in sporty occasions that needs fast buttery smooth HandyCam video recording

IMO HTC One has a great macro shot capability. It also has an amazing HDR capturing ability. Using it during low light conditions also sometimes gives amazing shots. Everything else for me is decent.

Browski, I'm not exactly sure if you're trying to insult me, but it's not going to work. I realize that no camera will focus when there is no light. I'm saying that my camera, once in a while, simply refuses to focus, even though the lighting is somewhat decent. I'm not saying that you are lying or wrong. I'm just saying that it's apparent that not all One's created equal and therefore not everyone will be able to get the same experience as you did.
People in the Taiwan forums and those with dev editions have confirmed that the 4.3 update doesn't fix the camera tint problem. Go figure.

Hey! Why should i insult you or even be rude! We r just discussing a simple point dont get the point wrong here.
Am sad you got a defective unit i think u should return it if the tint bother you alot.
Other people here in xda confirmed the purple issue gone after the 4.3 update ... I will get u the link.

The issue with the purple tint is the camera software telling the camera to crank up the ISO and exposure automatically.
It's possible to keep the photo ISO down and there's no purple tint. But when recording video there are no manual settings options other than changing the resolution. Cinedroid sort of allows you to manually override the exposure level but the ISO is still maxed out so the image is underexposed but the purple tint remains and the image doesn't look anywhere near the way it should look as if it was a photo.
So a software update should be able to fix it.

Start video recording , hold on the spot you want to picture so you lock the focus then turn off recording and snap the photo ( remember don't touch anything after stopping the recording ) keep in mind this can mess things up sometimes and make super bright photos.
Here's one tip for far flash photos :
Increase exposure , if you use max exposure you better be 10/15 meters from the target , flash is very powerful with increased exposure , especially if using max , it performs like it has xenon.
If using max exposure + max contrast you better be 20+ meters away it's even more powerful.

Here is a simple comparison from my x-phone the Nokia 808 pv vs htc one at the same places. old pic found on my flickr account when i had the 808 ... photobucket links for larger resolution. i dont believe in the cropping thing and comparing minute pixels. i believe in the overall picture apperance as i view them on my monitor !

Is it so difficult for a developer to make a tweak to give us flash when touch to focus? This is the biggest problem of the camera in my opinion as I never had purple tint

me too is wondering what prevented them from adding the led focus assisst in low light. it already fire before focusing !
To switch to Night mode video capture. Just choose Night Mode then tab the video capture

Hello xda members, I bought this phone because i thought it would be an awesome phone. Which it kind of is but still not. And i am writing this so people who wants to buy this phone gets a some information about the phone. And yes i know there are a thread like this, but one is only positive and the other is only negative etc.
In general this phone is a beast, it look good really premium feeling. But when using it for a couple of days i fins so much in this phone that is really bad that i seriously consider changing phone.
I am not make this phone look bad or so, it is still a awesome phone but these things is not acceptable imo. And all of these things that i will write are IMO
- ´The camera is really good, it takes sharp pictures and is quite good when it is dark (but should be better), but god damn the camera app is terrible. There are no options at all! You can't do a sh*t, and when taking pictures of "landscape" the picture turns out great, but when you zoom in every single detail is blury as hell (look attachment). A phone with 20MP should have much better camera app and more features.
- The battery life isn't good, I used only GSM and no wifi, lowest brightness and the only thing i did was texting and looking at the clock. But the phone was still consuming quite a lot battery..
- The wifi performance is bad, i have a samsung galaxy s2 too and i put the phones on the table and my samsung has stronger signal (which leads to "faster" internet).
- The viewing angels are bad but it's okej i can live with that not such a big problem.
- The bezel is way to big, the phone could be smaller and still keep the display size, because the phone feels a little bit to big and doesn't feel so good in the hand.
- And last but not least there are a few things they should fix in their "ROM", that are bugging me.
But overall it really is a great phone, but these things makes me consider changing phone.
Hope those of you who want to buy this phone thinks this is useful.
The first picture is in auto mode, and the other one is in manual mode.
have to agree with you on the camera. when you take a photo it looks really nice, but when you zoom in it's a like a painting lol. no sharpness whatsoever. hopefully it'll get improve with further update. i thought the battery would be much better, but i find it the same as my old htc one and that's 2300mah.

Not my experience at all. These aren't even the sharpest shots I've taken - you should see the ones I snapped of the outside of the Natural History Museum. Hell, you should see the ones I took of the ceiling inside the natural history museum.

It's a cameraphone,... I'm just not sure what people were expecting. Of course it's not a DSLR but it's pulling in far more detail in every 8mp image than any 13mp phone picture I've taken.

I didn't say that the pictures ain't sharp, they are sharp and really look good. But when you take a picture like the ones in the attachment it is very blury when you zoom in. But overall the sharpness is really good, but the camera app sucks big time, you can't change any settings, the old phones with 2MP had more options..
Btw nice pictures you captured with the z1

I did - self selected Night Portrait mode at 8mp 4:3. The other version of this shot was actually captured using superior auto (I know!). SA decided to turn on "Spotlight Mode" as the interior of the truck was bright and the exterior was in full darkness. It became a very interesting shot!
The full samples are in the link (above). Click on the image in the gallery. This takes you into Lightbox mode. Then right click the image and select "original". This is the full resolution image. Right click again, select "Save As" and resize and inspect to your heart's content.
All of the images in the gallery above are as they were out of the phone. No post processing, no photoshopping. Many of them were taken in Manual with me selecting scene modes but if you see a 16:9 shot it was taken with Superior Auto.
Well i must say i had HTC One which was tricked out, with a modified stock rom and a custom kernel with all the bells and whistles, I use my z1 with wifi connected when im at home and 3g when im out and about, its my main media player, so i use it for mp3's and what not aswell as whatsapp and a few other apps, i got to say the battery life is about the same as my old htc one, bearing in kind, the z1 has a bigger screen and a faster processer. Ok i agree with the bezel it could be better, its still a well built phone and in terms of looks i think the htc one is the only phone which will top it for now.
I dont know whats wrong with your z1 but my pics come out great but then again i dont use superior auto mode, i have no issues with wifi, i get very good speed even when i only have 2 bars. it is known that some phones do not give an accurate read out(GIYF). How long has this phone been out? and how many updates have been made? its a brand new phone only released a few weeks back, fixes will come out, have some patience.

I start to believe that there is different hardware in each batches of this phone,like sony did with the screen.
No way i can get this results with my phone.
Anyway i am going to the shop for a replacement maybe i will get lucky with one that have good hardware.

There is nothing wrong like that the picture a really good it's just that the pictures taken at landscape shown in attachment. everything becomes blury when zoomed in. And that the camera app kinda suck if you compare to other phones even though this phone has a great camera and that the camera is something sony focused on.
Anyone experienced boot up failure and not being able to force reboot using power button and volume up button even after several times? coz i had this and didn't know what to do until it booted up after many trials!!

Mmm, have you still the film on the back of your phone? The len looks awful, I did a lot of shots never got one so bad. Are we sure is a Z1? Finally on which firmware version are you?

My friend i own Xperia T and Xperia Z1 and so far the Xperia T is THE BEST CAMERA PHONE EVER.
The quality when you zoom in to the pictures with Xperia T is better than my digital cameras.
The noise at Xperia Z1 pictures is worst than my Xperia arcS.
The same think happened with Xperia Z also.
After the update to 4.2 the camera quality went to [email protected]
I hope that is a software problem that can be fixed.
Last but not least.
Xperia T at superior auto captures at 12Mp and the Z1 flagship at 8Mp.

Yes I had this problem and it was taking so long to boot I thought the phone was dead.
Finally after waiting as long as 10 minutes for it to boot it started up. It would get very hot during this and use as much as 5% of battery. I found it would do the same thing even when booted in safe mode or after I had removed all of my apps.
From what I can see it is some sort of software problem that happens after the installed apps are updated when you initially configure the phone. I can't tell which app is the problem. Another weird thing is that it was carrying over settings from my last phone (lock screen text etc) that are not compatible and this may have been a problem as well.
I did a factory reset and setup again and it did the same thing after a day of use. So I did a factory reset and then did not upgrade the apps or do a sync right away to my Google account and so far so good and I powered off and back on this morning with no issues. So I am not going to update the core apps for now and maybe I have it fixed.

You have tried putting it in manual mode instead of superior auto right ?
manual mode you get more options than i've seen in any other phone camera
(exposure, white balance, iso, metering mode, focus mode, resolution, hdr, steadyshot to name but a few)

yea i know, but i meant when you have 20MP there are no settings you can change only when 8MP, but the biggest lack (imo) is that they don't have features like for example drama, slow motion etc that galaxy s4 has, htc one also has the slow motion thing.

Can I get some full quality pictures posted from the Note 4 Front Camera? Good & Bad lighting, With and Without Beautyface.
They don't need to be selfies, but I would like a few to be.
I noticed my Note 4 when taking front camera pictures and selfies suck compared to my Note 3.
I tried recreating the same pictures (same room, same lighting, same angle) I took with the Note 3 and the White Balance is way off, there are more artifacts, and distortion, and the pictures really are not in focus, especially at a minor distance on the Note 4. Even lights in pictures have an starburst/halo effect that others don't seem to get on the same shot.
I contacted Samsung and they had me pretty much clear app cache and data and factory reset the mobile. Not much help.
I wanted to see if this is just the norm for the Note 4 or if I have a bad cmos sensor or whatever before I send it for repair or exchange.
With full spectrum daylight led and cfl bulbs, all front pictures are yellow hueued. Adjusting the white balance helps, but shows more artifacts and can't be done in apps like snapchat, skype, google hangouts... pretty much anything you would use a front camera for that's not a camera app selfie. I even have a softbox setup with proper professional lighting and images show up with lots of artifacts and halos.
It's almost as if it's ever slightly out of focus and when the system API jpeg compresses it, it shows sloppy artifacts.
My cat took a selfie the other day! Lol! Not sure if this will get alot of replies. Most of us are too ugly for front camera shots

Thanks, they don't have to be face shots. Like point it at a bottle of something with text on it or pictures.

Yeah I know. Couldn't resist though. Hehehehe! I'll play around with it some and see if I notice what you mentioned. What rom are you using? Have you tried the camera mod and talked to the guy who's been modifying the camera apk? Here's the link...

I'm on Stock Rooted Rom.
I have used multiple apps with the same result.
Apps that allow you to adjust the exposure and white balance can compensate a little.
I have a feeling when Android 5.x is released for our phones, if Samsung updates the driver to allow raw images, things would get a lot better.
It would be nice if you could adjust camera variable defaults in the OS for applications that don't provide an interface to them.
I am definitely going to check out that modded camera app. Thanks for pointing me at it.
Even if it doesn't make a difference, "No audio interruption if listening to music" alone is worth it.

Yeah mine seems a little like that with the modded camera. I noticed the yellowed tint a little but it seems to be related to the lack of flash and it seems like it's being processed like it's in low light mode to make up for lack of a flash. Have you tried in day outside with alot of light? Might help a little. Not a fan of those low light/night modes. They are alway pixeled up and blurry. Look like sh!t most of the time. I've never used the front facing camera much on my phone or even on my computer. All my friends, family, and gf live here in town so I haven't had much need for it much. Sucks, I know, for those who need it. But!... Like you said, the lack of timer, audio interruptions and now that the camera works while on a phone call makes the camera mod worth it. Maybe the driver could be modded or at least the software related to it could be cleaned up by a dev or future updates might improve stuff some. You never know... Let us know if you think the camera mod helped any with the FFC at all. I just don't use it enough to know for sure. Thanks!

The AT&T version never took sloppy shots. I'm experiencing a poor performing front facing camera on the T-Mobile Note 4 as well. Solution is, use the rear facing camera.

That's an unfortunate answer.
I notice with face beauty set to 4 and up it creates a blur effect so I slide all the way off and my images are sharper but I haven't noticed and yellow tint that some of you are reporting.
