Watching movies - Epic 4G General

So, last night I decided to givemedia hub a whirl and downloaded 300 and watched the whole movie on the phone and I never realized how good this phones screen is for HD. It looks better than my tv.
But anyways, riht after the movie was done, I downloaded and watched V for Vendetta and fell asleep afterwards without charging, and right now I'm at 13hr 34min with screen on time of 5hr and 43 minutes.
Id say this phone handles media playback quite well lol

Also just realized...tws is 53%...wtf lol

Yeah its good to watch movies on this screen.I downloaded about 5 from media hub sofar.Dont forget the files are stored on your sdcard,I had to delete them manually for some reason.

I love using the tv.com app and watching STAR TREK: TOS episodes. Anytime they use a communicator, I feel a tremendous inner geek fire and oh how warm it is. Heh heh.

veoh.com/iphone is high on my list, that and I rip alot of movies to the phone in high qulity, about 1.3gb on most hour and a half movies.

I also highly recommend : Droid Streamer
it's free on the market and streams tv shows, movies, and anime @ 480i compressed. There's a Pro version, but i dont know what features you get with that.

How much gb is a movie file?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

droid streamer is nice but it seems like it wants to much info, but I do keep it on the sdcard and install when I want to use it...Media Hub files range in size, most are around 900mb - 1.1gb

I wouldn't call droid steamer nice per se, but it is free and gets the job done when bored, altho the dev. needs to use a better player that can do aspect ratios.
Do Media Hub movies play @ 720p for 1gb -/+ files?

I think they are 720p native.

now if we could just find something that will allow us tpo play them through allshare woudl be great, i hate allshare can never get it to play any damn video

I use double twist for my player. Keep my music playlists there and watch TV shows and moveis with it. I transfer movies and shows from my pc to my sd card on my phone. And yes, it HD looks fantastic on Super AMOLED. It's the best screen I've seen on a phone

One cool feature i like is it lets you airsync your andriod to your itunes player. Do you know of a app that's similar to this but streams to WMP or VLC player?

There are a couple of sites like that. I just don't like using flash solutions. It's clunky, downloads slower, and kills battery much faster than the old "iPhone friendly" streaming sites.

I tried the iphonevids.tv or whatever it is and used the miren browser as started in other threads and it will play about 5 minutes of video and then stop and say video cannot play. What is the best way to stream on the phone? I would really like to get something going because I use the hdmi to my tv and could watch movies on it.

As far as music, Amazon just released their cloud music service. You can buy purchase music and store all your music in a cloud and listen to it from web browser on your pc or mac or android devices/blackberry. Its pretty sweet. For music this is pretty much on par with Itunes if not better because of the cloud offerings. I have a video overview of that here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEZ9gy3USno
As far as video, there are kinda 'loops' now. Although if you are an Amazon Prime member you can stream movies and tv shows from their streaming service, similar to netflix but not as wide of a selection. The apps blackbeltrk mentioned are sweet. The only other app I have to add is Slingplayer, but this also requires a Slingbox as hardware. This doesn't really differentiate the Xoom from the IPad because you can do this on the Ipad as well, but it enables you to hook a slingbox to your TV,Computer,Xbox, Wii, Roku, ect.... and watch from them remotely. Its a pretty sweet setup and being able to hook your Xoom to a friend's TV or Projector means you essentially have a portable cable box . This also means you could hook up a video device that plays Netflix to your Slingbox and watch Netflix from it. I have two videos that overview Slingplayer so check them out if you find it interesting.

Xoom - new user experience

I have had this Xoom tablet since Monday and every evening after work I've been busy toying with it to see what it can do. Wasn't sure initially that I was going to get it since a new version is about to hit the markets, but I got a good deal at Dixons in Dublin airport (€289) for the WiFi version.
Anyway, in most of the things it's a great toy but it has a few, but really annoying, shortcomings:
- Not able to charge via USB cable
- Not able to mount like a normal Android device to my computers
- Playing movies is a a horrible experience, if at all possible.
For the second item, I have downloaded and installed the Motorola drivers for my Windows PC and after that it mounts just fine. Same goes for my Mac. For Linux I had to fire up the Terminal and do some fiddling following various guides on how to set up USB mounting and Samba sharing. So it's not impossible, just annoying that manual setup needs to be done on various platforms...or perhaps I'm just lazy.
I have quite a few .mkv movie files and I have searched this forum for players that will accept the files. None of the players I've downloaded are able to play mkv even with Codecs installed. All of the players mentioned in this thread do not work with a mkv file the size of 1.5GB. There appears to be software that can convert the files to be more Xoom friendly, but it costs about $30. Of course, seeing my mate being able to play all movie files on his HP TouchPad with WebOS without problems doesn't exactly help to lift my spirits.
I did have some issues with Google Music not wanting to remember my online collection but since downloading the latest app yesterday this now appears to be fixed.
My Xoom runs Tiamat Xoom Rom 2.2.2 - Moray and I flashed the Odachi kernel.
Other than my ranting above the Xoom is great for browsing the web, skype, listening to music and reading books (becoming addicted to buying books in Kindle)
For the MKV files - handbrake won't convert em for you? Cause that's free - and what I use to convert raw material for my xoom.
edit: and I personally have never seen a tablet that charges via USB. Samsung's galaxy tabs charge via their dock, my old nook color required the charger to charge, even though it was a modified USB cable, and the xoom is well.. we know already.

Haven't used Handbrake in a while so I'll have a try to see if it works. Any special settings you set up in Handbrake for it to work with the Xoom?
This is my first tablet so I don't actually have much to compare with regarding the USB charging. I just mentioned the lack of USB charging to two colleagues who have HP tablets and they were surprised that it needs an actual wall charger.
As its been said many times before USB charging would take forever on a tablet. I can charge my xoom to 100% way faster then my girlfriends Galaxy 10 which uses the 5v USB.
And the way the file managing is done is better and worse in a way. Phones and pcs handle it better and i haven't had a issue with corrupting my sd card like i did with my Droid 2 and the old mounting. But linux is a pain to get MTP to work with. On my Win 7 pcs it saw it right away and worked with out needing anything DLed.
And handbrake does all my video converting great. It may not be super 1080P HD but i really dont need super HD on a tablet. Ill try to pull my preset file for you to try.
I use MX Player off of the market for MKV files and it plays them flawlessly when changing to software decoding and such for certain files. You should look into that.

Just out of curiosity, how large are these files you're testing with? .mkv's, .avi's?
The VLC app works for me if I don't try to jump all around the videos too often. It's pre-alpha so there should be some quirks.

The files were about 1.5 GB. I've tried with smaller files and that seems to work. I just assumed that any file under 4 GB would play without problems. In any case I've fired up Handbrake to compress the movie files. Great with free software
My way of doing things.
so far i havent had any problems playing videos, partially because things have been too hectic for the 4g xooms so i keep changing stuff, and partially because most of the movies i own in digital form all play without hesitation, like from the google movies.
as far as mounting goes, windows does fine once u have the drivers, but i hate paying for software, so fudge windows. linux on the other hand is easy, all i do is boot into cwm and mount usb drive. works like a snap, prob work in windows too, just havent tried. that lets u access your externalsd, but theres prob a way to mount ur internal, just havent tried that yet either.
and the charging i read somewhere actually works through usb, its just so slow, and so low that one, it doesnt register, and two it would only really be fesible in an emergency. but i actually like the fact we get a full powered charger that just juices it up quick and painlessly. true the only way to charge it on the go is get a seperate charger, or a converter, but i can live with the battery power.
hope u figure your stuff out, i love this thing. does all i want and more, witht the added benefit of having a metal case, which is more important than u think!! wait till your mates drop their pads, i put mine through some rough wear, and that metal case has saved it several times. the biggest thing that breaks on these that ive seen is the glass on the screen, which is a pretty easy fix, plus it wont make it unusable if u do, just gotta live with it. have fun!!!
I use MX Player to play video files that were nearly 1.1GBs, never had a problem. Is the Video the problem or the audio when you were using it?

I play 10GB MKVs with MX Video player, I have no idea why you would be having issues with your files. I love my Xoom and MX plays everything
charged it to 100 % last night and it was at 99% thus morning. Just one per cent down in 10 hours with screen off. That's very impressive!

From my personal experiences:
- Not able to charge via USB cable
Aye, that's a shame but understandable due to the amount of power needed.
- Not able to mount like a normal Android device to my computers
Unfortunately this will be the way for all android devices, also all phones. This is due to the switch to MTP connectivity from ICS and up. Google made this switch so they were able to pool all the memory in a device to a single storage pool, this to avoid all the issues with earlier (low amount of memory) devices which would run out of space after installing a lot of applications like for example the HTC Desire or original Nexus.
- Playing movies is a a horrible experience, if at all possible.
Agreed, it was quite a let down, mostly due to the limitations of the Tegra cpu. As mentioned by a lot of others MX player does it pretty well however, for my own collection i use and can advise you Plex. Its removes the need to recode anything in you library. On the move its not an option if you are without wifi in your case (i have a 3g Xoom myself) but its awesome when connected.
Enjoy your device.

Movies/tv shows

A question for all. Is there any way to get movies/tv shows for the tab? Refering to either an app (buy the content) or legal website to purchace. Now im not talking about hulu or any subscription based program. The original tab had Media Hub and tha was great. Another option would be how to rip blue ray or dvd then transfer to tab but i know ripping software are expensive and i would need to buy external blue ray for my laptop to go that route not very economical. Sugestions would be welcomed as i really wast to take advantage of the screen. And what restrictions would i have to install the content on the externat sd card and what could i do in order for it the play. Thanks and hope i was clear on what i am looking for

there is always free programs to rip and convert stuff you could do something like this for dvds.
edit: here is a more old school guide for the process just in case.
I pose a moral question. If you already own the material why not just save yourself a lot of time and hassle and download it? The end product is the same as if you rip the dvd and remove the protection then convert it to a more managable .mp4 or .mkv yourself.

btw: Try MX Player! It can play nearly everything for free and you can use hardware decoding.

Also, I am not your lawyer, but it's not strictly illegal to download things. Uploading is what gets people into trouble. That may change in the future, though.

So I was able to get a movie from amazon and download it to my laptop. The file was saved as a .wmv file, I tried to transfer it to the tab and it would not allow me to due to license restrictions ( I dont get it I already payed for it what else do I need ) it also mentioned to convert the file as an option. I tried using handbrake to convert it from .wmv to .mkv, it got to 2% convertion and then got an error message and handbrake stopped, tried it twice and same issue. So I have come to the conclusion that I should just give up because it is getting to complicated to get a simple movie to the tab.

I can't tell you what the best settings are but if the quality is not high enough you can change it to make it higher. If you are using the constant quality slider you can slide it up to 18 or 17 or even 16. If you are using a target file size and you are converting from a dvd you can use lets say 2048 MB and see if that is better. I would stay with an mp4. You can try each codec to see if you prefer one over the other. h.264 is supposed to be better but i guess the other one is a quicker encode i am not sure though.
Not sure if this is much help...but an app called 'remux' (for Mac OSX) copies video files into a new 'container (say mkv to mp4), but does not re-encode the video stream itself. So, would remux-ing the .m4v video file would remove the DRM, or is it embedded into the actual video stream? I've yet to try this myself having never used the iTunes store for getting video files.
Hmm, answered my own question--Googled 'remux m4v to mkv DRM' and found an ehow.com webpage that could that be helpful (Wow...that makes me look incredibly noob-ish, lol) So, hopefully this post is somewhat useful/relevant, and I'm using the correct forum etiquette (OK to reference other websites considering the DRM issue?). Regardless, enjoy those Samsung 7.7's. That AMOLED screen must rock for HD vids, etc.

Is there an "Air Video Server" equivalent for us?

I dumped my iPad1 to pick up the N7 (love it, despite being on my 3rd, soon to be 4th, because I keep getting N7's the fracking annoying screen separation).
Just wondering if there's a cheap, good quality, android equivalent to what I was using on the iPad to stream videos from my media computer to my tablet. I used to use Air Video Server. So if anyone can point me in a good direction, I'd appreciate it!
And it only needs to stream on wifi. Don't care to be able to stream stuff to my cell when away from home.
Yes.

I've tried plex before. HUGE resource hog on your media computer (couple hundred MB footprint). Any other servers? What I liked about AVS was that server application was really lightweight.
Edit:
And oh wow, I just tried it again (it HAD been a while, so I figured I'd give it another shot). It's absolutely horrendous. Media management is a ****ing joke, scanners can't find files if in certain layouts, and it's slow. I will however say that they worked on the weight a bit, though still heavy, chugging ~174MB of ram.
Hey no one ever recommends this here... but qloud media server is what your looking for (I promise)... my biggest problem too when coming from crappy iPhone lol

Just use dice player to stream over SMB and not have to run anything on your PC, Oh and now you can even have it in a floating window on the device
Smb while local, play on while remote.

Bubble uPnP as the client and just the uPNP parts of windows. I use it to stream video, photos and music from a NAS drive and before that my PC (Windows 7). With MX Player Pro to do the actual playing I have no problems at all. There are a few uPnP servers - Twonky is one I've used too.

This. Emit is awesome and simple.
I have played with a lot of the servers and I keep coming back to Emit. It is not the highest quality, but it is a small footprint and it is very reliable. When local I have recently been testing out using Bubblepnp to connect to my plex server and then play the video with whatever my player of choice is, Dice, BS etc and that is putting out some really quality results for me so far. I just wish I could use the PS3 Media Server to transcode to my Nexus 7, but no luck as of yet.

Doesn't play on Jellybean, crashes in SW mode, and just has a loading icon that goes on forever and ever and ever in HW mode.

My Air Video server wouldn't show up in Emit.
