Probably just the name that Google is giving for the "phone version of Honeycomb".
..and what's so WTF about it? Google usually releases two major updates a year. Once in the Spring/Summer and one in the Winter. Business as usual. Only now they have a tablet version with it's own schedule.

I'll stick with gingerbread till jellybean comes out

The generic term is gelatin....
Your wikipedia link doesn't even go anywhere, instead it suggests places, like the Jell-o page.....
Jello however has become a genericized brand synonymous with gelatins, much like people often refer to all tissues as "kleenex"

Only Google can have a bunch of people debating about the validity of words pertaining to food and copyrights.

There's always room for jello

Tired of these rumors. Ever since the word of froyo coming out everyone was saying oh its a tablet only release. Get off that crap. Sure google would be smart enough to call it gingerbread 2.4t or 3.0t which ever it is. T for tablet if need be. It wouldn't be wise nor make sense to make device specific OS upgrades.

Why wouldn't it make sense? Phones and tablets should require different approaches; or do you just want a phone OS to be lazily scaled up to a tablet? Im sure that a lot or most of the elements of honeycomb will be seen on phones but don't expect all. Besides that, its just names and both are made from the same core.

Ah-hem. iOS.

makes sense as it appears that there is going to be separate software for the tablets and the phones, a principal that i agree with. Tougher on dev's i would imagine but better for consumers which in the end with more adoption potentially would be a larger install base

You do realize that iOS is why I said that, right? Who wants another phone OS scaled up to a tablet. It should take advantage of the form factor and hardware.

they need to make a bigger jump. these little jumps from 2.1 to 2.2 to 2.3 to 2.4 are retarded. causes even more defragmentation. Should wait and add more functions and upgrades to it, and release them at least 1-2 years apart. Whats the point of updating the ui without actually making it faster and adding some more functions to it.

Have you tried gingerbread? I get better battery life speed is much improved easily go through a day with heavy use
I can't imagine getting an update every 2 years or even 1 fragmentation ia only occurring because manufactures are to lazy to update and take their time google doesn't have hardware limitations so it can be updated like the g1 it runs froyo well

Froyo Android 2.5??

So I was just reading about, Froyo 2.5 will this ever be available for the HERO or would that most likely be on the upcoming EVO?
I was reading about some of the features including the "Portable App Engine"
Using the new Portable App Engine, Android will now be able to run Palm Pre and iPhone applications using a virtual machine.
While the Pre only has about 2,000 applications, Apple’s iPhone is currently the industry leader with 150,000+. iPhone’s best games are very desirable to non-iPhone owners, for example, as they generally offer superior graphics and level of gameplay, that is, until Froyo comes out.
Portable App Engine is a "20%" project started by 2 Google engineers – Joseph Smarr and Ikai Lan – and got its name from Google’s flagship App Engine.
Google is notorious for allowing their engineers to work 20% of their time (1 day a week) developing their own ideas and releasing the most ingenious ones to the public. For example, Gmail, Google News, Orkut, Google Talk, and Google Sky Map were all "20%" projects
Any news When this is becoming available? Or if there is any dev out there with and leaks?
Seriously? We dont even have 2.1 yet. What makes you think 2.5 will be out any time soon??
Wasnt this an April fools joke?
I think the Hero will get FroYo eventually, like 8 months after every other phone does. By then, I will be at least two handsets away from the Hero.
I do happen to have a few Google engineers on speed dial though, let me give them a ring.

FroYo = Android 2.2 not 2.5. It really doesn't matter.
Our phones probably won't handle the app engine any way since everything seems to be going snapdragon. I would like to see a Android Tegra phone my self. but thats besides the point.
wouldnt a virtual app engine running iphone apps somehow be illegal? i dont think apple would let that happen.

You, sir, are correct. I've heard from reliable sources that 2.2 is in it's testing stage. Also, someone posted pictures on 4chan of a HTC Magic running Froyo.
I'd normally be very skeptical about anything I hear on 4chan, but these look legit. From what I've read, they're going to slow Android core updates to a crawl now that the OS has reached maturity. They are going to put all the Google apps in the market starting with this release. (ie Dialer, Music, Youtube, Gmail etc etc) That'll allow them to update those components individually so people using certain devices won't get stuck using old software for an unreasonable amount of time. *cough*
This'll help reduce the fragmentation issues that have plagued the platform from the get-go.

I saw these pictures, but never really realized they where from a Magic. Looks like we could possibly run 2.2, but again that portable app engine seems like it wouldn't work well on our phones. Java's mantra of "Write once, run anywhere" doesn't take in to affect the performance of the host machine. Google could prove me wrong, they have before.
What's the download?
OK... so I went to the android police site about froyo. It absolutely sounds way out there, but what is the download they're linking to? Anyone download it to see what it is? I'm kinda scared to thinking that it'll pop up a virus or something but I don't think android police would do that. Would they? Anyone try it?

NO WAI did you see the flash light?
I think they should let FroYo die and focus on making GB a better release, especially if they're numbering it as a major version. Honeycomb is nothing more than a name at this point. If they already knew what they wanted to develop for it, they'd just put it in GB.

Personally I enjoy froyo a lot better then eclair and yes maybe it is not perfected however gingerbread is going to be a brand new version of android where as froyo is still a 2.x version of android making the possibilities in advancement greater then on froyo... Think of Froyo like Windows Vista. It had improvements over XP but with a lot of problems too that left most rather unimpressed. So Microsoft decided cut short development of Vista in favor of developing Windows 7 which by-in-large has been well received such that we would like to forget that Vista ever happened. In the same way, I think we will forget about Froyo once Gingerbread releases, provided that it actually is a great remake of Android.
In other words, why waste time perfecting a buggy OS? Just start over. Rethink the OS from scratch with a few lessons learned from previous successes and failures.
Eh...just my $0.02.

Supposedly Gingerbread will completely overhaul the default Android user interface, to the point where HTC was being asked if they would even include Sense on 3.0 (they said they still would, unfortunately...) That's what I'm most excited about Android is pretty B.A. but it's ugly as heck.
Once again why waste time perfecting something when there is something new to perfect

So far they havent released minimum specs, some sites speculate since its based on the NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core CPU that it will be the minimum. But a phone can dream.
The question is, if 3.0 is tablet based then what is the next update for smartphones? Surely not Ice Cream Sandwich? Tablet OS should work on smart phones otherwise they should use a different numbering system. Kinda getting ahead of myself since the x10 wont get as much as 2.2 officially.

From what I understand regarding 3.0, if the resolution of the screen is above a certain amount (ie a Tablet) then it will have the new UI and but if the resolution is smaller (ie a phone) then the UI will remain the same.
In this article on the german smartphone site areamobile.de, they say, that Honeycomb will stay a tablet-only OS in the near future.
But later this can change since they want to reunite the Android versions in the long term.
You could try Google translate if you're interested in the article

Considering the fact that I haven't used 2.1 since mid December and now currently running a stable 2.3 I'd say that no more updates is a little exaggerated. Probably not. It is an industry first, but it's also pretty much just a gimmick, like 3D. I would have been much more interested in a dual core phone, or even an Evo with an updated processor.
I can see how it would be good for mulittasking...if it had the power of a dual core processor...but the specs are very underwhelming, and the battery life is going to be horrible.
Its not that bad a phone but sprint did themselves a great disservice by hyping it up so much. People where expecting something huge and instead got a phone.

Yes. Yes you are.
The issue is that it "may" be a good phone once some people get their hands on it and play with it.
But you cannot deny the overwhelming negative response (see their facebook page) as a pretty big sign that it may not be a good phone.
If you look at it from a sales/marketing POV they would much rather have a phone that everyone thinks looks really cool at a press release, but then falls a little short of expectation in the real world. At least they sell some phones, and the high initial praise helps sustain the life of the phone.
Now look at this situation, especially in this economy, 99% of the initial response is bordering "verbal lynch mob", even if it a good phone, how many people will actually give it a chance?
First impressions can kill...........
It's an interesting concept, I'll give them that, but it's made by Kyocera, looks like a brick and not a lot of developers will go out of their way to make use of both screens.

I recall saying something similar would be great. I dropped the thought when tablets came.

Actually its the second gen check out engadget fire more proof...i don't feel like providing it.
. Under the hood there's a 1GHz second-gen Snapdragon running Android 2.2 -- we'll forgive the older software because Kyocera had to do extensive customization to add dual-screen support to seven core apps like the browser, email, and messaging.

Way to go Google :(

Guess ill have to go back to stealing DVDs from Walmart.
MASSIVE epic fail
Except there isn't any phone support yet? The only device they could base this off of is the Motorola Xoom. I'm waiting until Google officially gives the ability to watch on my phone before believing this. And if this is true, back to Netflix and movie download sites it is.

It's nice to be positive but this is just another step that has been taken lately that brings the likely end to support for "openness"
that's ok google, i'll just stream my dish network service to my phone for a one time fee and be able to watch the same channels i have at home for no additional cost.
I have netflix and hulu i'll be fine. I'm not that much of a movie watcher
Oh puhlease. Like this won't be hacked-in within a week. Hell, Vegas probably has odds on when.
I think you guys are missing the point.
Yeah, there many be alternatives to this specific service, but if this stands up it says that Google is no longer interested in openness.
People have been saying it's the movie companies pressuring Google. My question is why, since rooting alone doesn't mean you can bypass the payment service with Android Market. They'd still get their money.

Good. Death to "openness" and fragmentation. Lets the this OS on the right path so we wont have to jump through flames just get the "perfect" experience.

I'm willing to bet they had to do something to make the mpaa happy. Google is a company trying to make more money (most companies do that). I can't blame them.

And as long as I can remove any app I want and have more modifications (say the way cyanogen allows you to)...you and I can agree.
(**** us agreeing? The rapture might actually happen today)

Dont forget notification toggles.
That should be embedded into basic android code.

Common sense should tell people that for the movie industry to agree to provide this service to Android, Google had to agree to this.

Yeah that to! I could care less about overclocking with a dual core phone. I really just want this OS to take off man its been way too long and I think google needs to get in gear; if they don't windows will catch up and grab a huge chunk of the market shares. Im not asking for much but most the features that android is lacking need to be standard, one shouldn't have to root to achieve all these things (the list is long lol). For some strange reason I really feel like when all these wp7 nokia phones come out it will give them a huge jump! Everyone knows Nokia always had ****ty software but hardware is unsurpassed. Honestly, I think google needs to hit android with some more design that uses hardware acceleration or something different from the plain aosp look. Im not talking sense, or other flavors I hate fragmentation, they need to overhaul the design for aosp.
