USB or Bluetooth connection to computer - A7 General

I read on one of the many A7 posts that there is a USB "A" cable that allows connection to the USB port of a computer, and enables file transfers. Is this correct?
Also, I was able to pair up with my laptop via Bluetooth. Is there an app required (on either or both devices) to then enable this connection to see the A7's sdcard and transfer data back and forth?
Either solution would make the A7 a much more acceptable tablet to me. The "adb over wifi" is not nearly as flexible, and the eLocity solution to (1) remove the sdcard, (2) plug it into your laptop, (3) transfer files, (4) remove from your laptop, and (5) plug it back into the A7, is almost laughable...
UPDATE: I tried QuickSSHD, but I found the instructions confusing and/or incomplete. My A7 was able to "pair but not connect", and coudn't find a solution to this.

Now that I have an A7, this is the coolest app I've found for Android.
At Fry's, I couldn't even find USB 'A' male to 'A' male cables that weren't 3.0 (which apparently aren't backwards compatible). This is sweet.

I also have the viewsonic gtablet and have been using this app for sometime now. It is the way to go, no cables.

dropbox
hi I havent got my a7 yet its on its way but I use a free app called dropbox to share stuff with my phone, netbook ,ipod touch and my son in tn it works great.

I use the free dropbox app. I also use it with Titanium Backup. Works well.

another method is using swiftp to make your a7 into a ftp server. Then you can transfer files using an ftp client on a pc or on another android device.

dropbox is a great service but websharing is a different beast entirely. both have their place and both are awesome.

Websharing didn't work well for me. Some files it would refuse to upload to the tablet for no reason. I did upload three photos, seemingly successful, but on the tablet all three showed with 0 size, and won't display.

I have been using Dropbox most of the time to transfer files. Just put the file in the dropbox folder then download it on my phone.
Since CM7 gives my troubles with usb tethering, is there a way to wirelessly explore my SDcard through wifi or something?
Itd be nice to be able to clean up the card every once in a while with my computer.
I came across this app - "WiFi File Explorer PRO":
I can't post links yet but you can find it on Android Market
Looks like what you are looking for
A few questions...which nightly are you on and what issues are you having? Are you trying to mount to a PC or Mac? If it would come down to it, does your computer have Bluetooth capabilities?

I also use Wifi File Explorer. Works well for me.
I"m using cm7 #12 and usb mounting works for me
gr8nole
is the wifi explorer worth paying for it are you able to download all the new zip files and where does it store it?
I use swiFTP from the market. It's free, open source software and it works great. I use it all the time when i'm too lazy to find my usb cord, lol.
thanks for the replys...
I use a mac.
I haven't tried it in a while so maybe the USB tether works, but figured why bother if I can do it over WiFi?
I have bluetooth, but that is verrrrry slow. not sure why, the phone is inches from the computer too.
I've experienced the same thing with bluetooth - really slow no matter what. FWIW i've stuck with swiFTP because it has great transfers speeds. Better than any of the other wireless methods i've tried.

accessing android phone (USB Mass Storage)

am i being stupid ??
im sat here with my HTC Desire (running GingerVillain) connected via USB to my transformer dock. Ive enabled USB mass storage on my phone.
Can i find it using File Manager ? No ... nor ES file explorer ..... am i going mad ? im sure when i was at home i was able to find a USB drive through file explorer ... is this a quirk of Android mass storage or am i just being thick ??
It doesn't work for me either. Would be nice if they got this to work soon. I thought maybe it was because I din't have 3.1 but even after the update it won't work. Kinda sucks.
this is similar as connect together two windows pc, It never worked like that . why should work here then?

hmmmm. but isnt the whole point of the Android USB Mass storage 'mode' that it works like a USB Flash drive ? ... and the Transformer copes with USB Flash Drives !!!
im not suggesting that its like plugging two windows pcs together ????
i had a thread about this last week.
it does the same thing for me (i have an HTC desire). very annoying!!!!
the only way i found to easily transfer files was using a bluetooth transfer app called:
"Bluetooth file transfer" free in the android market.
its not that fast (bluetooth limitation) but allows transfer of smaller files etc.
i wanted to transfer all my music (like 4gb) but over BT that would take days lol
so i have to wait to copy paste it all to a computer, copy paste to a USB stick, copy paste onto the transformer
OR, upload on my wifi to Dropbox and then download onto my transformer. uploading 4gb would also take days....
hopefully it will come soon...!!!
connected my san francisco (CM7) to the TF, it's mounted as 'removable' correctly...
I have my external HITACHI HDD on NTFS working fine but when I've tried to connect my Nexus S in as a drive its just blink on Transformer task bar and thats all
I would love to see my NS connected to Transformer so I can do more work on it.
Any1 know how to make it work ?
I have the same problem. I am on 3.1, but my X10 mini is not seen by the Transformer. No problems with thumb drives - or even a Microsoft wireless mouse (with own dongle) works perfectly.
It's a little surprising that an Android device is the only thing that is giving me problems!

3.1 & USB Peripherals

I know that 3.1 added support for a broader spectrum of USB devices, and I thought it would be interesting to compile a list of what works and doesn't work!
So far, I've tried:
ACER LIQUID E - Basically just charges the phone and allows for tethering (wish I could mount it) **UPDATE** After rooting and installing busybox and drive mount, Liquid E is able to mount! (Thanks, entropy)
HP WIRELESS MINI KEYBOARD (Model #U10G) - Works flawlessly! Prior to the update, only the keyboard worked, but now the mouse works too, as expected!
SONY CYBERSHOT (Model #DSC-W55) - At first the Iconia didn't detect it, but after I went into the camera menu and changed USB connect mode from "auto" to "mass storage" and plugged it back into the tablet, the Gallery app opened automatically and the pics from the camera magically appeared! Woohoo!
LOGITECH ATTACK 3 JOYSTICK - Not too useful, but it works! Basically it works as a glorified mouse, scrolling up/down/left/right. Pretty basic for now, but perhaps a good flight simulator will come out in the future?
SAMSUNG STORY STATION 1 TB HARD DRIVE - My biggest disappointment... I know there are workarounds to get external drives to work, but I was hoping 3.1 would provide a fix for this. It is formatted FAT32, so I'm not sure what the problem is, but my Iconia isn't picking it up **UPDATE** After rooting and installing busybox and drive mount, Story Station is able to mount! (Thanks, entropy)
I can confirm the iphone 3gs will charge and you can import photos/movies taken on the camera.
I have a cannon camera at home. I know they have a strange interface which always requires me to load a separate driver in windows. I will test it later and let you know.

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind. I'm not currently rooted, but I'll likely take that plunge soon. I was hoping 3.1 would cure that in the stock software, but we can't always get what we want

A "safe" way? I'm pretty sure it won't explode if you just unplug them.
In all seriousness, you should be able to just unplug them without losing data. At least I always have.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the reason you have to "eject" removable media from windows is because windows has some sort of drive caching to speed things up. This means that just because you have copied a file to your usb drive, doesn't mean the data has actually been written right away.
Furthermore, Windows also locks out files that are in use by an active application. As such, windows makes you "eject" the media in order to give the OS a chance to check to see if any of the files are still in use, to avoid the application having a brain fart and crashing. Also, if an application is in the process of writing to a file and you yank out the drive, the file could become corrupt.
I think both scenarios are not likely to occur on an Android tablet, mainly because its based on a real operating system not designed to treat you like an idiot. Just make sure none of the data is being used by any open apps and you should be fine.
That being said, always make sure to keep backups.
Cheers,
-PW

I use Samba Filesharing from the market -- I can connect to both mac & pc with it -- works great.
I could connect my GT 10.1 to my Macbook Air using Kies, but any video I copied over didn't play properly. So, I now use a WiFi File Transfer application which works pretty well.
Regards,
Dave
Today's free app in the Amazon App Store is Wifi FilecExplorer Pro -- tried it & it works great
kies app works fine on mbp running lion i
My MAC with lion would not connect to the 10.1 wireless or USB. Today on PC World they had an App WIFI File Explorer. Free download crippled and $1.60 Pro version. It is in the Market & Amazon.
I have the pro version and can transfer files wirelessly now. To me it was worth the $ rather than fight with Samsung.
I second his vote! Only problem I had was Amazon free version wasn't Pro?? Still worth the $.
kies sucks in terms of video playback, i've just been connecting it then pushing things i want via adb.
There may be something wrong with the kies mac version. I have seen the similar problem before. You'd better connect Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to your macbook in Mass Storage Mode without Kies.
Firstly, Boot Galaxy Tab 10.1, and then go to “Menu” interface. Select Settings>Wireless and network>USB settings> Mass Storage. But you should ensure the USB cable is unplugged. After a few seconds, you will find a little USB symbol. Click on where it says USB connected and then click on where it says Mount.
Then the internal and external SD cards should be mounted, and you should now be able to open the drives in "My Computer". Now you can drag and drop or copy and paste your video files to Galaxy Tab 10.1 from your macbook.
As for the videos, I'm pleased with using my Brorsoft Video Converter, since I have not met any problem yet, not only in the conversion but also in the playing. You can give the website a go and have a try. See if there is any improvement compared to your converter.
having trouble connecting to my mac to its really getting annoying, im running bootcamp so can boot into windows easily but for something this basic i shouldnt need to.
anniemayday that works on my galaxy S2 but on my galaxy tab 10.1 the usb settings do not exsist?
Kies via USB with Lion or an app called WebSharing works fine for me (just read Kies may be wirelessly enable now) for large files. Dropbox
for smaller items. To my knowledge, the GT will not mount to Macs like an sd card or other external device normally would. You must use these methods or the file explorer listed above, for now.

My tab doesn't have the mass storage option in the settings..
Why?
And when I try to download kies it says no lion version available ..
How did some of the guys have the kies for lion?
There is no mass storage option for the 10.1. If I remember rightly I just installed Kies in Lion without any issues. There was an update availiable as soon as I ran Kies as well.
However kies on the mac is broken it will corrupt a lot of videos you try to send. After a tip on here I just use wifi to transfer any files. No issues now, well except the transfer process is slightly slower. I also installed Wifi File Explorer Pro from the market and I can access all areas on the tab via my browser on the mac

As many have said, there is no mass storage option on the Tab 10.1. Furthermore, there is no "My Computer" on a Mac where drives would show up. Third, those programs you mention only work on MS Windows. Please take a moment to understand what people are asking.
I find the best combo for me is File Explorer (free in the market) and a decent FTP client. Sure, transfers over WiFi aren't as fast as the cable, but it gets the job done. Also my first tab stopped connecting via Kies altogether.
If you want to convert videos like the quoted person suggested, grab Handbrake.

I downloaded the mac version of Kies and autoupdated it and can transfer files pretty easily. You can also try loading Astro and the bluetooth component and doing bluetooth transfers. External hard drive can't be mounted?? (RESOLVED!)

I just got a Shield Pro (only due to the fact that I was able to get the Pro with the remote and stand for $244) and I'm trying to connect my NFTS 3TB external hard drive, but it won't mount. I read somewhere the Shield can't recognize a hard drive with multiple partitions so I extended the original partition and now there is only one, but it still won't mount no matter what I do.
Any thoughts, tips, tricks or advice on how to get it mounted will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry if this sounds partitioning but at 3tb sounds like it must be externally powered. I'm assuming its powered up and you can hear it spinning up? I would also try a different usb cable even if that cable works on the PC. Stranger things have been known to happen.

No probs thats my damn autocorrect, I meant "patronising"
I have tried a 2TB Toshiba, a 2TB WD Passport, and a 4TB Samsung portable hard drive. All of them are 2.5" hard drives and all of them are self-powered (not plugged into an external source for power). All of them work without any trouble. They are formatted in NFTS and have only 1 partition. Maybe it's your brand of hard drive that is not working on your Shield TV.

It could be the cable but I couldn't tell you for sure. If it still doesn't work after that maybe a factory reset or a reflashing of the images may be in order. Something could be corrupted cashing the issue but that scenario is a more severe remedy to the small issue.
UPDATE: Although I tried to repair the drive on my WIn 8.1 mini-desktop, it wasn't until I connected the external drive to my AIO with Win 10 that the external drive was repaired (which took a maybe a minute) and now I can access my external drive.

I can see it as SHIELD on my network and I can see the IP address, but I can't seem to access it. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

If your Shield Device is rooted, you can always give Servers Ultimate Pro (comes up as the Amazon free app of the day quite often) a try & setup a simple SMB server. You would probably need Server Pack B (this is free). I actually have this setup on my Nexus Player with Stickmount.

Thanks. I actually did do that. I guess I have to keep trying.
This is going to sound odd, but if you are on ethernet, try using wireless to transfer files. Most FTP programs won't start a server on ethernet as they are programmed for wireless only. They think phones and if a phone is not wireless it's mobile network, and therefor don't turn on server. Worked for me on both ES and Solid Explorer wireless, but neither wired.
I'm having the same problem as topic creator. Using a self-powered 3 TB WD Passport, and cannot get it to mount on the Shield no matter how I format it (FAT32, EXFAT, NTFS both MBR and GPT). It reads on every other device and PC I have just fine.

ES File Explorer even recognizes the presence of a USB drive, but gives a "failed to open file" error when attempting to access it. Android's storage manager doesn't see the drive at all.
