[16 FEB][APP] ModMob 0.9.6 - Tutorials, Tools and Roms [Formally RomHelper] - HD2 General

I'm fairly new to programming but I thought I would have a go at an app that could help people flash roms, radios, change themes, find new apps etc. The app is simple (and I meen really simple) at the moment but I am hoping to extend its functionality soon. Basically what the app does is provide you with the tools, download links and instructions that you will need to flash a rom/radio/spl etc to your device.
I have also tried to include links to the best apps, mods & tweaks that your device has to offer, this part of the app is in early development at the moment but it is quickly growing.
I am programming this in c# and I'm a bit of a nuub at it so if there are any developers out there who like the look/idea of the app then please feel free to contact me, I will glady give the source code to anyone who wants it as I would like this app to be as helpful and usefull as it can.
Feedback is much appreciated and I would love some requests or ideas?

i cant believe over 100 views and no one has any ideas or feedback for me, i know its not the best program in the world but a few replys would be nice.

This would be ideal for looking into things instead of using the lame "search" feature (no offense) or keep looking through the pages .
But the tile is a lil bit misleading, as ROM Helper doesn't actually describes what does the app do . I mean it's just my opinion to change to something more informative, like ROM instructor for instance, title .
Also you won't draw attention in here, try posting it in a more specific section : ) .
Such a good app, keep up the good work because that what our community should do ! I wish i was a developer, even a noob one : ), cuz i have lots of apps' ideas but they're just in my head !
Keep it up

thanks for the words of encouragement, your feedback has been very helpful

I think you have a typo. You wrote KernAL insead of Kernel.
Its a great programm and i was looking for somethink like this a long time ago.
i know its a hell of work, but a start screen where you can search according to things like "6.5 or 6.5.3" and "cookie or "non-cookie", etc. I think its impossible because its just to much work as i guess you are connecting all the face manually.
Anyway, thanks a lot, i like it!
OT- Edit! I just noticed your Шапка-Ушанка - have u been to russia lately?

thanks and cheers about the typo, i will change it now, new version is being uploaded as i type this. and i wanted to add a search function but it wasnt working for me, im sure ill get round to it tho.
also i have been to russia but not recently, got my hat from outside the big museum in st petersburg, ive been learning to speak a bit of russian too for a hobby. dont know how you spell it in russian but i can say it ok "boy apinima paruski" lol

This is a great concept and could be a fantastic alternative to searching through the forums for what you need.
I'm sure you're still working on it, but at the moment some of the ROM headers link only to their download page (i.e. hotfile), and not to a description.
It looks like a lot of work, but it would be great if it becomes a comprehensive resource. Thanks for all of your effort!

Try to get this as a sticky---Best apps for different uses

This forum has a lot of information and a lot of input and applications and downloads. I recently started coming here a few weeks ago and little by little have gotten through quite a few threads and downloaded some amazing stuff. However, it's been difficult at best and quite slow and tedious and I know there is still lots of stuff I'm missing.
What I was thinking is how it would be great if we had one unified post that summarized and organized some of the most popular applications that are available here. Something like:
Best Music Players
--HTC Audio manager
--Mort Player
--etc.
Best Browser
--Opera Mini
--Picsel
--Skyfire
--etc.
Best locking program
--S2U2
--etc.
and so on, with the download links next to them. This would make referencing certain applications easy to find and download for all from various threads. With a few people in charge to moderate the thread, updates could easily be done as people post as they arrive or to alert others and then subsequently deleted.
I'm not sure if this has been brought up or attempted before, but I wanted to throw it out there. Please feel free to close or lock this thread if necesssary mods.
I would also add that some polls could be set up initially to identify some of these key applications to set up a "standard" list of applications that most users here should at least be familiar with and/or have on their devices.
Thanks and hope this idea helps out others if it's put forth.
Chain Fire's WMWIFI ROUTER
Slither's HTC CUBE Clone ( flash version )
Slither's HTC Cube ( C++ version )
Throttle Launcher
will add more later
Best Music Player:
Pocket Melody
Best Browser:
NetFront Browser 3.5
Best contact App :
-- PocketCM 0.19b !!
I can't find the pocket melody thread... can some one gimme a link...
Thanks
Sorry, but before this thread becomes very crowded and yet another "must have" list that gets lost in the realms of the web: Wouldn't it be better to do this in the XDA-Wiki?
Here's a good starting point.
A sticky hint might be a good idea, though, you've got to scroll the Wiki main page for a while to find it...

Thank you. That's exactly the type of format I'm looking for. I didn't want everyone to just come and start posting their favorite programs but instead to have ONE post that combined them all. I just don't know enough of them and haven't been around long enough to even begin to compile it.
That wiki page looks great. I just hope someone that has a little time and the desire to do this could pull it off. I just don't have either nor the knowledge to put out something that would be helpful. Thanks for the reply.

We should have official polls on what are the best apps for each category.
That way, the best of the best will show themselves and those who are not yet enlightened, WILL be.
It will also clear up arguments and let popularity decide.

UltimateLaunch - Reference Thread

I have started the task of getting my head round UL and how it works. There is quite a bit to learn and a whole shedload of threads dotted about all over the place with useful information.
Some of these threads are about UL, others about icons and/or their use in UL. The purpose of this thread is to act as a reference point for all of the threads on UL related matters.
The intent is to save time trawling through the site by having all the links in one place.
Feel free to add to this; however it would be useful if you could ensure that you don't duplicate a thread already mentioned here.
Cheers

Great list, but it would be great if you could tell what each thread contains?
yes it will be a good starter for those who wants to use ULtimate launcher theme hopefully there will be an indication for each link that you have given
but anyways this is a great thread and greater is the one who has started this
Thanks a lot for saving us time
it will be better if someone can make a thread for battery status theme that they have used in coordination with the Ultimate launcher
I do believe they go hand in hand

NOTE: there is a thread here but still to many pages for a reader to read but what I am asking is what theme that you are using in coordination with your Ultimate launch
-> aurora is a good alternative but it sometimes get too complicated ( I have done it though) for the other members to make IMHO

UL Customization
Word to the wise, don't change the background color of UL unless you have your device backed up or better yet, you can boot in safe mode and disable UL from your today screen. I changed the background color and it locked up my device. I did 3 soft resets and I couldn't boot in normal mode. Luckily I had a safe mode tool installed so I booted into safe mode and disabled UL.
However, this is one of the coolest launchers I have ever used. It's a little rough around the edges. Hopefully it will get better as time goes on. I just wish their was an English forum to post bugs and requests to for the author of this cool software.
I have changed my background color many times and it never locked up my device.
I'm under the impression that it may be rom related sometimes, and not UL. On some roms, I can use youtubeplay, and others I can't or it'll install, but wont open. On some cooked roms, I can use igo, Tom Tom, and others I can't. You'd believe that if you have jbed installed, you'd be able to use Opera Mini. As it is well documented on this site, many are having issues with it and having to tweak this and that create/install mortscripts, blah blah, blah. Sometimes it not the app, it's the cooked rom. Some have had to remove and reinstall UL because they were having today plugin issues. Just my two cents. My point is that the user maybe doing all the right things, but still encounter minor glitches that others may not experience.
good idea. Robo !
Robosiris,
I believe you have hit the nail on the head there. You are already aware of the problems I have had wth UL and plugin deinstallation.
I love this forum because it is all about helping each other out and sharing experiences; one reason why I thought a reference thread would help (I need to ask the mods to make it a sticky).
What I find really annoying is knowing I have followed all steps to the letter, don't get the result I am looking for, then someone comes along and tries to be a smartarse rather than being helpful!
I too am looking forward to the next version of UL where hopefully some of these bugs would have bee ironed out and the software will be compatible with a broader range of roms.
Meanwhile I hope we can all continue to share our knowledge here and help each other out.

In my thread, I tried creating UL manual (if you will, lol) because it's so customizable and almost impossible to write everything. So I just hit the finer points.
Creating this thread is indeed a smart move and good idea. I can see this thread (or Sticky) becoming a Wiki for UL. I think this is one of the many applications that needs a Wiki.
Update: you can now download all my icons, INCLUDING .ICO (see first post here for link)
@ Admin or whoever, please delete the link to the "iphone glossy", its not uptodate, thank you.
this thread is a very good idea - has introduced me to both UL and rltoday!
A thought - people should post what themes / skins they are using with either (or both) UL and rltoday, they work really well together.
I am using the skin by Focaldesign:
http://www.focaldesign.be/HTC/?see=Focaldesign-Pi3cH
skins UL and rltoday. it is brilliant, but would like to see what else people are using....
I have a quick question too - how to i change the font for UL?
I have copied the font to the \windows\fonts directory, and then in the options changed the font name (under the font tab - typeface name)
but doesnt make any difference.
Any thoughts?

You'll need to change the entire system's font, there are cab installers in the forum, I use Segoe.

I love UltimateLauncher for all of it's customization options, but I already bought SPB Pocket Plus 4 and I'm not sure how to integrate UltimateLauncher with Pocket Plus. Seems like over-kill. If anyone is running both together, I would love to see a screen shot as well, or at least an explanation of how both complement each other.
I don't think it's overkill at all. I have seen some people's setups that have UltimateLaunch running in full screen "virtual page" mode, with Pocket Plus running on one page, and Weather Panel or SBSH Pocket Weather running on another, and Today Agenda on a third.
UL is one of the best mobile purchases I've made.
I'll second that Robo, UL is money, for the first time in a WHILE, I didn't mind spending.

Fav Apps

Hi All,

Just installed the latest dutty rom and was looking for advice around what other apps should I load onto my new device?
Any advice really appricated!
Thanks,

Agreed, red the wiki link above. Each person wants different apps to suit their needs so it is up to what you want!!
Thanks for the answers guys.
I guess part of my question was around what apps people felt that they could not live without. Reading through I know some folks like the ability to have multiple home screens etc.
But will check out the wiki!
Here are some "must-have" apps for your new HD. (my opinion)
1. HD Tweak
2. Advanced Configuration Tool
3. Pocket Mechanic
4. CorePlayer
5. Resco File Explorer
6. Sprite Terminator
7. Sprite Backup
Thread closed by request.
There seem to be enough "my favourite this and that" Threads around.
This can be seen by some as information pollution for Search Engines.
(it's actually a fact that it is information)
So that is why this thread is being closed, due to redundancy and no direct imrpovement of Development support.

Was thinking of a better way of organizing ROMs

Just got a HTC HD2 a week ago, been playing with ROMs since I got it and having a blast doing it. I was noticing that things are extremely unorgainized when trying to find the ROMs, where to download them (also having to download them off the free mirrors), what exactly changed, etc...
Was thinking of building a website, where all the cookers can upload their ROMs, provide a change log for each individual ROM, be able to display the different versions of their ROM. Provide details about their ROM (look, functionality, etc...). Then in each cookers section, people can post comments / questions for that individual ROM. I tried providing more details below of how the structure would work.
For the break down of content management I was thinking:
PHONE MODEL > COOKER / ROM > LANGUAGE > ROM VERSION > ROM DOWNLOAD
Phone Model - For now I would just be doing the HTC HD2, but if this caught on, would be up for doing more phones.
Cooker / Rom - This would be area for the cooker to show off his / her ROM, with pictures, description, anything else they want to say. This would also be the area where people can post questions / comments, that would be easily responded to by the cooker or another user.
Language - Notice that lots of cookers like to create their ROMs in different languages, this way, it is very easy to find the ROM in your language.
Rom Version - Display all the versions of that ROM in that Language
Rom Download - Change log for that specific Rom Version would be displayed and allow you to download the ROM (I would be hosting the website, so everyone would just be directly downloading off the website, no mirrors, etc...).
Like I said, it is just a idea. Let me know what you think!
i don't mean to be instantly negative, but it gets talked about every few months, and a few people even make a start(have a look through the regular hd2 section, theres at least one rom index project, possibly two, complete with little-used websites.)
problem is you need to get all the chefs on board, and most of them just don't care for the extra time and work involved.
best of luck, none the less.
I would be doing all the work. the chefs would really be uploading the roms and change log that's about it.
as i said, best of luck, it would indeed be usefull, im just passing on my experience of these type of projects.
(another point to consider is that quite a few of these roms have been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times, , at around 200meg each, can your server manage that? at a speed that people will be OK with? day in day out? you can bet that right this second as i type, there are probably a dozen downloads happening, thats a gig and a half, concurrently.... thats a lot of bandwidth)
yeah totally get what you mean. reason why I posted this to see if the cookers would even want to do this before I did all this work.
the bandwidth would be no problem, think I should just post this under windows development?
I totally agree and am willing to help!
Thanks, you have any knowledge in HTML / CSS / PHP / MySQL? Not going to start on the project, unless I can at least get a handful of cookers who are at least willing to just upload the ROMs to the server. I would be even willing to go as far as to get all the initial content up for the ROM, then hopefully the cookers would just upload new ROMs and submit a change log for that ROM version. The backend I would be creating for this website, will be very easy to use, and really would not take them much time.
But the biggest thing is getting them on board, see if any post in this thread.
great idea
I also think that having a website to organize these roms out there is a great idea. It can be very handy for new users who want to try out different alternatives with hd2. I think everyone including the experienced users would like to just go to one place for downloads and check out new updates. if you had the website done, everyone from this forum will check it out since we don't see much over here (we do have some threads about rom, but its just links to other thread, not organized enough). I will be very happy if someone like you can build a website for these roms.
Yeah, was also thinking of allowing users to subscribe to ROMs they like, so when a cooker releases a new version of their ROM, they would get a email, letting them know a new version is out!
Just to try to get the ball rolling on this, going to just ask the cookers just to upload their ROMs to my server and that is all. I will pull all the other information myself, at least for now, see how well it catches on.
There's already pretty good sites for that.. www.xda-roms.com and xdaroms.com !
xdaroms.com does not seem to bad, but they don't even have up to date roms, very cluttered website, etc... was going for most up to date rom / extremely clean / easy to use website.

I think this is a great idea... kudos n all the support to you... i have been driving myself crazy trying to sift through the threads n get a sense of what's what... we should totally factor in the time line of releases to make informed decisionmaking easier..
also, speaking of, anybody knows which thread has the best(stable+complete) version of android for the tmous hd2? not that i havent searched but the results of search are quite overwhelming to an extent they act as a deterrent for me to try some rom that might brick my phone.
Now that I have the support of some of the cookers, going to go ahead start on the project, will keep everyone updated!
Sounds great ... I wish I could help but I really do not know anything about websites/html and such stuff
But just wanted to let you know that this is a good idea and such a website is definitely much needed with so many ROMs out there ...
I like the idea, and hope it works well for you! You are probably already aware, but just thought I'd point out that there are chefs out there who don't post on xda. Ark_N is one that comes to mind over at htcpedia dot com. I'm sure people know of others??
http://htcpedia.com/
its already done my friend
Really looking forward to how this turns out...thank you for taking the time to do this.
If you like to see something change on XdaRoms.com let me know. I am also looking for help in getting the word out. HtcPedia doesn't allow you to really search through roms. A lot of chefs there repost over an old post so if you enjoyed an older rom better than the new one you can no longer find it. With XdaRoms.com I wanted the ability to have all versions of a rom available to search through. I also have the ability for Chefs to add a template to their account which you can generate a complete forum post based on a rom by just clicking a button. From there you can copy and paste the forum post and you don't have to write out the same stuff each time. The issue you will run into is mass adoption as others have pointed out. If you really want to help out and make things easier you should use what I have already created and pitch in to make it better.
Sorry to drag up an old thread
I started XDA-Roms.com a while back, because I wanted to learn PHP and also to give people an alternate to RapidShare etc. While I was fairly sucessful in learning PHP, I really do not like the code at all, and need to start again fresh, probably in ASP
I have seen a few of my ideas end up on other ROM sites, which is cool becauase we are all here for the same reason, XDA ROMs.
Unfortunatly, since I started XDA-Roms.com, my work pattern changed and I have not be able to spare the time to keep the site up to date (code or ROMs). Hopefully, I will re-write the site soon-ish and allow chefs to upload their own ROMs (the user interface is there, just not the backend upload code).
In an ideal world, I guess all the ROM sites would end up with the same ROMs, just presented to the viewers in different ways. Personally, im not looking for graphics on my site, just all the ROMs
With all this being said, if there are some ROMs people want uploading, PM me and I will upload them.

Working Toward a new (updated) FAQ Thread

Hi, i'm posting this after submitting the idea in the sfc3031's CM9 thread and asking the MS2 forum moderator.
The goal is to create a new, updated, more accurate and complete FAQ/REF/Links Compiling thread than the current one for the MS2 section (this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049123)
I've starting working on it, and currently i'm mostly trying to list and compile everything that should be put in it.
I'll write down a list there, and will try to keep it "up to date" on status once i start writting the real thread, while keeping this thread for discussion, so the other one stay the most simple/readable possible.
Ok topics i have for now :
- the different types of MS2 (mostly the difference between Froyo/GB kernels, and so on), and what it means, and how you can find out
- listing of all sbf's and how to know which one to use
- the list of available Roms, mostly the 4-6 that are usable to some points, and the state they are in, whith descriptions of what works or not, and if they are still maintained, and to what kernels/updates they are designed for
- list of the various fixes that are available for the MS2/Roms (WiFi fix, GPS lock fix, roaming problems, keyboard problems)
- tutorials to recover/unbrick the MS2 (there is a couple of those around to be linked, on top of the flash sbf from linux one)
- tutorials to install root R0/R1 (Latin America) phones (there is one written in this section, i intend to link it )
- tutorials to install CM9, with explanation of the difference between GB/China kernels, and probably a listing of what phones should be working normally
- links to various useful tools for MS2 (oc patches that are buried in the CM9 threads, MS2Toolbox, MS2 Baseband switcher)
- link to discussion/explanation about what batteries we can use in our phone, specially if they have been tested successfully (there is, it seems, quite some batteries that "works", as in they charge and power the phone, but whose status/charge level can't be read by the phone from what i read)
- list of the main maintainers/people that are behind the current state of well-being of the MS2 (the ones who came with hardware driver supports, roms, and so on)
- list and quick description of most features of the phones/roms, and what they mean (like what is HW acceleration, why it's good to have it, what is Crystal Talk and so on)
- a quick lexicon of the anagrams we use (honestly, until recently, i was wondering why there was a difference between the GB (as in Great Britain=UK) kernel and the others... before understanding it was GB as in Gingerbread=Android 2.3+ ), since i'm probably not the only one who had a hard time jumping in the shark pool of Phone Rom Flashing
- optionnally (but i would need help for that), a list of the projects that are under developpement and could mean better things for our phones if it gets ported to it (like the Tactile Recovery from TeamWin, or the Kexec project which seems to be a bootloader hijacker that could allow changing more things on our phones, including kernels and so on)
- explanation of what 2nd-init and the other inits options in boot recovery are (i'll need help on this one, since i don't know what they mean ).
It's all i have for now, feel free to suggests anything i missed, or anything you think should be there.
- maybe a list of useful aps/tools/windows-linux-whatever tools for flashing, getting infos, debugs, logs and so on ?
If you know/stumble upon threads you feel/think should be in the FAQ, just post them here (with a quick text to tell me what they are about and why they are relevant if possible), i'll try to keep reading there and update it.
Looks good so far mate, let me know if you need any help! :good:

I've got a working version starting to look "something" close to useful in the works, once i iron it out (puting missing links, orthographic correction and so on), i'll be meddling with how it looks on XDA and post it.
Now that i don't have 5 birthdays in 3 days anymore, i can go back to it.
