it's a full-fledged linux distro, unlike android, and it's designed for mobile phones, which will make it more usable for our phones than ubuntu. It has a lot of major companies like intel and nokia putting a lot of money and time into developing it. Not many phones run it now, but there will be a lot of high end phones running it in the future. I can see it becoming a lot more popular with developers and the phone modding community in the coming years. I'm definitely looking forward for meego phones coming out and hope to see meego running well on our hd2s....though it will probably be a while before they get the graphics driver situation solved on the hd2 port, so it will be very sluggish until they solve that.
Why question more OS choices for the HD2? The greatest thing about the HD2 is that it can run many os's because of the great development community we have.

What the heck is meego, and why would I want it on my device? I was away from XDA for a few weeks and the entire sub-form of HD2:LEO has changed!!!

The project isn't canceled, its development is rather slow

From the video it looks like a kids OS, which would be great. I would like to be able to give my kids a mobile phone that they can't mess up too much but that they can still use as a media player/recorder, calendar, gps, and of course as a phone.
I really hope that it does get developed into a great OS, the more choices the better in my opinion.

is this project really cancelled or just postponed till further developer work on it?

Meanwhile, the Chinese people, I support you

I don't know if u guys know already or not, but Meego 1.2 have been released for netbooks/notebooks yesterday, while Meego for smartphones will be released on May 24th a.k.a. next week during the Meego conference

I like the HTC HD2 screen size but... ITS WINDOWS MOBILE 6.5! YUCK!
Hopefully Android will be ported over to it when the HTC Evo 4g comes out right? I would kill for that phone
Any opinions as I am making this decision soon...

Yeah it reminds me of the Zune HD, but as a phone I think the OS is a stupid design. It doesn't seem fluid at all. This, of course, is coming from someone who hasn't had first hand experience. I have only seen videos, and of those videos, I am not impressed.

Ditto. I've never liked Windows Mobile. Symbian was way better than it, and I have to say, Android has blew symbian out of the water now. But didn't xda port android to it? Meh, I've never been a fan of ports, either. Here's what I'm doing: waiting till an upgrade period and if there's any whispers of a phone after the N1, I'll just wait for it and get that.
I have been lurking awile and I wanted to give opinion on the hd2 because I was in the same sitiaution when the hd2 came out. I was following the hd2 since october. And I was e excited about it. I was at the store early got it and I returned it the next day. I have been using a G1 since it came and then played around with a jailbroken and unlocked iphone and the hd2 was terrible. The. Phone itself is gorgeous but once you get over the bells and whistles its not user friendly and it locked up on me 5 times the period I had it.. I am just sticking to my G1 until somethin better comes out I cam say I prefer my rooted eclair G1 over the hd2 and the only other phone I would replace my g with now would an N1 but I don't want to pay the hefty price tag. I know you can flash the hd2 and all that but I don't like the idea of flashing a phone just to get it to work but rather flash, root, jailbreak to make it better. My G1 works fine out the box but its totally different. Beast when you root it.. aside from the freezing issues with the hd2, its just not. User friendly and the phone quality is terrible imo. You can get one for yourself but I would stick with my trusty g1..

I had a G1 and now have a HD2. I love the hardware and the winmo is just okay. My phone works great and the screen is awesome.
I do miss my G1. Everyone who likes winmo says it is great for business users. I am just an average user and miss my android apps. I played euchre on my G1 and the only euchre game I can find for winmo is $12.99. Not near as many apps and not many free apps.
I am patiently waiting for android to be ported to the HD2. There are no working ports of android on the HD2 so far. As is says in the previous post they have android ported to a winmo phone. But if you read the thread on XDA, the android port for the HD2 is really not even close.
Don't know about everyone else, but I bought the G1 at launch (10-24-08) and my contract won't be up until November.
I'm hoping for some good Win 7 phones by that time, with a physical keyboard.

i have to say.... im waiting for ANY good phone with a keyboard. companies seem to be stuck on touchscreen as most people like it because it's "sooo cool." cool as it is, it's a pain in the end. my main issue is the lag of the keyboard... it can't keep up with me! at least physical seems to NEVER lag unless the actual phone itself is encountering a laggy moment.

Can Android be put on an HTC HD2?

I am thinking of getting a new phone since my G1 is becoming really outdated, and was figuring between this and the Nexus One. Which do you think is better? I am assuming if you can put Android on this this one would be better right??

Yes, being able to dual-boot to Android on this phone would easily make it the undisputed ultimate king of mobile hardware
However, there's not an Android port for this phone...yet. It's being worked on, but it's ETA is likely months away

For me, yes, it's been 110% worth it. For you? Couldn't say.
Many people are discussing the HD2 vs Nexus 1 debate, but I think the real WM/Android decision right now would be HD2 vs the upcoming Incredible/Desire (both Android). Now, there will probably be a version of Android that eventually makes it on the HD2...but I doubt there's much chance somebody will bother to port WM to the Incredible/Desire.
I personally like WM and Android both, but for different reasons....and if I have to choose only one at the moment, it's gotta be WM for me. But I'm happy that I'll be running it on a piece of hardware that will probably be able to run both before too long anyway
Thanks for the input. When is the HTC Desire/Incredible coming to T-Mobile?

Yes.
I'm a big fan of Android and this is my first WinMo device, so I have been surprised to learn that bare bones, I prefer WinMo. It's the apps which have been the biggest issue. Android clearly wins in that department, but you can usually find an app for the most used ones on Android. The functionality may not be as great on some apps and you definitely have to search to find them, but you can get the job done.

It's only a hopeful rumor right now that T-Mobile could get the Incredible, but I'd be surprised if at least one of those two didn't end up with Magenta badging at some point.

Another possibility is that Tmo will get a version of the Samsung Galaxy X, another Snapdragon-powered android powerhouse.

You would think being windows it would have a ton of apps, strange. Is it because microsoft wants lots of money to develop for their platform?

I'm on my 5th WM device [Ipaq 6315, MDA, Wing TP2, HD2] so theres one thing I've understood: 99% of apps ARE NOT in the Market Place. Seek and you shall find.
...and for you Android fans - I suggest you buy an Android device. There is no guarantee that Android will ever be ported to the HD2 and even if it was, who knows how buggy its prone to be.
I'll admit HD2 is really nice. WM sucks on it, but I can deal with it because I know devs will find a way to put android on it! Hopefully a solution for the pixelated pictures in web browsing too. <--- that's my only complaint with this phone.. : )

If you think WinMo sucks, you shouldn't have this phone. It will be a long time before there's a good android port for it.... by the time there is, there will definitely be android phones with much better specs.
Yeah thats what i been saying. That andriod port is a way off, even with the evo coming, the hd2 will be obsolete by the time it arrives, which is why i am trying to dump mine now.
Ahh thanks for the suggestions.

What phone is/will be the next HD2 ???

Let me explain my question.
HD2 is most popular phone for developers. We have Android, WindowsM , WP7 , Ubuntu,...etc.
My question is what phone is going to replace HD2 and will be focus for all developers in next years.
I will keep my HD2. I want in future to buy a new phone which will support multiple OSes like HD2, but have better multitouch, screen, speaker,...etc.
So what phone do you think is the next "HD2" ???
That's a really nice question mate! A bit difficult for me to say though! HD2 is by far the best phone ever made and developers gave to much effort for us to have all those Operating systems running extremely fast and stable. Although as i said it's a bit difficult to say which device will take place! I just got my HD7 and sold my HD2 because WP7 is really my OS! Simply, fast, stable and something new! So i don't think so that HD7 will be a developers phone or any other device currently available! HD2 will be in history until something new will come in the future! Now who is the next King?? UKNOWN!
I am quite sure that the device which will be the "dev-fav" successor of HD2 is not yet existing. However, the next generation will bring even more power, maybe there will be a few candidates on the market soon...
Probably due to the fact the HD2 is the only Windows based 1Ghz model, not sure any other native device from Android, Windows Phone 7 etc...could be hacked so well as the windows mobile base, if they bought out another windows mobile phone with dual cores etc...
easy answer, its the next phone cotulla buys. So only you have to be aware its when cotulla buys a new phone and which.
I don't know if there ever will be another phone that gets as hacked as the HD2 did. The HD2 was in a unique position where it got all the ports it did... also it being pretty much the first and last winmo phone with snapdragon, and there wasn't any competition of other winmo phones in it's league, it attracted a lot of devs. With any new android or wp7 phone, there is such a variety of choices and similar devices, that the devs won't all get the same device... they will be more spread out between the variety of similar devices, so porting won't be accomplished as quick as the hd2 ports did. Also, I think winmo devices were much easier to port other os's to than android or wp7 devices. I think the next device that comes closest to the versatility and choice the hd2 had will probably be a nokia meego device or something like that.

There is no way to know when the next "HD2" will appear and what it will be. However I have a hunch it might be another HTC device being HTC receives a lot of development here and that HTC usually delivers innovative devices.

Yes, its kinda disappointing though...I would have preferred Nokia going the android way and they could have put their software resources on building a custom UI like Sense..maybe they could have put something exceptional...
Now its just going be vanilla Win7 phone just like every other Win7 phone out there...nothing much to distinguish from..
Anyway back on topic...I think its going be some Nokia phone. Many people just buy nokia for its brand name and reliability...and some people would hate Win7 which although a great OS..is very limited..
So it might generate interest in the community to port Android on it.

Especially when we android devs already know how hard it is getting support and sources out of some of these chip manufacturers!
But that said - we're an enterprising bunch and I think we'll see support for many devices already out there. You only have to look at the amount of ports that already have GUI up and working.
To answer the OP - as others have said - it feels dead as no one is really using it yet because it is so incomplete. There's no point us here on XDA jumping up and fixing it because Canonical are already hard at work at their end. As soon as we start seeing alpha (May), beta and RCs you'll see this OS jump to life on a lot of devices here on XDA.
It'll be interesting to see how these ports fair when they make the jump to MIR and stop using CM code though.

This is true, I really wanted this to happen. It seemed like something fresh and new. But I kind of feel the preview was just to appease people, it feels like it will go like Ubuntu for android. Big promises, but no end result. A daily driver was meant to be out any day now but I wouldn't hold your breath. I think they have bitten off more than they can chew. Look how long its taken Mozilla to get an os up and running. I'd like to be wrong, but we will see. Great idea, great design but questionable execution.

Be al little patient people....its still in development. The the first phones with ubuntu will come next year...but the progression behind the screen is enormous. And its not only about the phone but is about one OS on all your devices. Tv, pc, tablet and phones.
Its going to be awesome...

I don't think patients is what we're on about. The only person setting time limits is Mark Shuttleworth, its more about if it ever happens. Don't think anyone minds if it take a week, month or a year. Its the promises and then not happening that frustrates me and I'm sure others. I was excited about Ubuntu for android over a year ago, was even going to buy an atrix. Now I've gone and got a gnex and for Ubuntu touch. Then a week before its supposed realise, all of a sudden its a dev preview! The first videos and info left that info out and its running on cyanogen mod. That's not quite what we were told ether. All that aside the point being, I'm not against it intact I'd love it to happen. But in using this stock device I've found myself not really wanting to move and also expecting it not to happen. I can't help but feel the reality was more about getting people to use Ubuntu PC rather than touch. Its almost like any publicity is good publicity. Its not about time, its about truth and the truth is people are getting no feed back, where are they at, what they need, there's a whole community of developers at there disposal and there not using them. I had gone off android, Ubuntu touch has only made me love it again. I'm not trying to start an argument, its my view. Ubuntu to me just feels disorganised. Google doesn't!

I think that Canonical made a mistake in announcing the DEVELOPER PREVIEW how they did, because it seems that many people do not know the difference between CONSUMER and DEVELOPER PREVIEW , and then come here in despair waiting for the OS.
Canonical release the dev preview to appease the us then it died down were still gonna have a long wait b4 am official release after that happens if we die down again then we're dead

Yes and no. When it was enounced there was no developer tag. It was a week in before that was added, I can't help but feel that the "developer preview" was originally going to be complete but they realised they couldn't manage it, so they realised what they had as a "developer preview" it kind of feels like they messed up and tryed to cover it up. I might be way off base here, it makes little difference to me as I've already said I'll be staying on android for now. Least on my nex4, witch will be my every day phone. I might try it on my gnex if it ever emerges but I won't hold my breath. . . to be clear I'm not annoyed at it taking time, I'm just saying to everyone don't expect it soon if ever. We will see.

Not even close - there are already daily drivers and you can already test all the core apps on Ubuntu desktop.
Soon these will head over the the phone. Besides that you can already load your own apps onto the OS.

Ubuntu touch is dead?, seriously?, how could you say such a thing when it's still in development... Mark Shuttleworth said it'll be ready for daily use soon so just hold tight and wait a bit.. Honestly I don't like posts like these because it makes the community lose hope in the OS when it's not even ready yet.. -.-

That was an irresponsible mistake by Mark Shuttleworth to say. Ubuntu is piggybacking on CM, how can he guarantee compatibility with all those phones?

Isn't that what open source is recycling (or piggybacking) from other peoples work. Why rewrite what's already there I would have found it idiotic if they didn't use cm.
Next your going to say they freeload off debian.
