[Q] Data Usage ??? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the 200mb plan because I rarely need internet when I am in my car or out somewhere (I am just forced to sign up for a data plan obviously).
I was wondering what uses the most data from my apps? Is it the GPS(if I use it for getting directions) Is it e-mail?
I've just looked up my data usage and I have 7mb taken out of my 200mb on 12/31. I remember I was out with my wife and checked my e-mail and refreshed tweetdeck. I can't imagine that would suck 7MBs of data, would it?

Google maps would use alot of data since its downloading the map data and directions. 7 megs a day is easy to get to considering when you are syncing up to email, maps, and market.
When it checks for email, even if there is no new email, data is still used. The phone sends out a request to the email server asking if there is any new email. If nothing new is there, nothing else is downloaded. But there was still data sent over the internet to find out. Going into the market, it has to download icons, app descriptions, review info. Go onto a web page, all the content of that web page is downloaded like html, css, images, javascript, just to name some.

Free up internal storage memory

I was browsing through my phone and noticed that the internal storage memory had gone from 71mbs to 30 since I got the phone about a week ago and this is because of all the apps I added to the phone since then, but I found a way to free up some of that memory. I just went to settings/apps/manage apps and then I browsed through the apps and noticed that some apps had mbs of data being used up, for example the browser had 8 mbs of data being used up now I thougt about and said there's nothing I need saved to the browser so I deleted the data, and also deleted the data from youtube and other apps and freed up about 11mbs of memory on my phone without any damage done, my browse, youtube and all the other apps still work fine and I'm back up to 41mbs memory free from 30 mbs free. I didn't notice or experience no problems but do this at your own risk,I don't want nobody complaining to me that i mesed up there phone,I'm only trying to help out.
I did this to my faves which for some reason had 5MB of data... I don't even have a my faves plan as I am grandfathered into the best plan to date. All the internal apps have a clear button to clear data... all the add-on apps just have uninstall... wish we could clear data on them too.

You can free up even more by just removing the MyFavs app altogether. Unless that's what you're saying you did (I'm not sure).
I've considered removing MyFavs altogether, but if I do that I'll have to go to the website or call to update the names. They shouldn't change anytime soon, it's all friends, family, and work, but still.

How do you uninstall it? It doesn't give you that option because it is built in. Just like the browser. Let me know cause I noticed it still uses the MyFavs to talk to t-mobile every hour or so... would love to just get rid of it since I have no use for it.
Go into the browser and goto menu/more/setting/clear cache. This freed up about 20mbs of storage from my phone. I went from 11mb to 30mb of storage.

I don't have MyFaves on my account, and my phone never installed it.
... are you sure? go to settings ->applications->management and look. I don't see it on the phone but when I check that list it is there... and when I use the debug tools I see it pooling tmobile to see if I have myfaves and I assume looking for the 5 numbers.
I deleted the myfaves data and it cleared all my contacts and call log. Not a huge issue, but annoying
i cleared my favs data because i dont have myfavs, but now i keep getting a text message from myfavs that says:
Sorry, the service is temporarily unavailable
i have same issue about receiving a text saying myfaves doesn't work but i only cleared it once like 2 weeks ago. be careful because like the earlier poster said, clearing myfaves deletes all yuor contacts too. however, going on your gmail, and looking up your contacts can resync them
hbguy
To free up phone memory you can go to Setting/Application/Application manager and clear default data of some software. But careful, if do that, you will del the backup infomation and setting of this software.

deleting the myfaves app kills syncing and I mean IT STOPS all syncing w/ goog which = no push mail and many other unpleasent things...
And it deletes your contacts if you clear the "my faves data"
tmob in its infinite wisdom replaced the contacts manager used by android with the myfaves app, I think there is or will be a way to restore the original handler on rooted fones, I forget where I read it probably here... just do the home+back alt-l thingy or whatever the commands are searching is fun.
moving the web and market caches to SD could get back like 30megs, Ive done the web and all seems fine, in a few days ill try the market, but most peeps are posting no probs AFAIK.

I did the clear data for MyFavs and yes it does clear your contacts.
To restore it I went to menu/settings/data synchronization/ then unchecked auto-sync then re-checked it and started the sync process and restored all info from my gmail account.
I don't have MyFaves on my account, but the MyFaves application takes up a whopping 88kb... I could care less if it's on the phone or not.

yup that fixes it, but I notice somebody posted they removed the myfaves app completely on a rooted g1, and Ive read here in another thread that that kills the entire sync process with GOOG,GMAIL whatever, its replaced the default android contact handeling app, folks are working on it, I also have a plan way better than any offered on tmob ATM, they have been raising prices and love to get those of us grandfathered in out of our plans, I only use like half my mins each month but with new plans I save like 10$ and loose 50-60% of my mins...
so Id like the original call handler back, these tmobile devs have screwed up more stable platforms than I care to remember.

Nexus one keep chew up my data.

Hi, I am new to Android and just bought Nexus one.
I like every features of the phone. However, I switched off Autosync with google account and turned off even background data. Lastly I killed all of the background running apps except 3G watchdog (to check 3G usage).
And this F nexus one still downloading some data!! its downloaded like 200kb for an hour. Last week it chewed up 50MB on a day when I used data for an OTA update which was around 15MB.
I had an iPhone 3G and 3GS before, but I used iphone with push notification on and never had problem with data usage.
Why my nexus one is keep chew up my data? Am I doing something wrong?
I am sad that I need to run gmail app to see if I received new email.
PS. Last 3 days, I used data for like 5min per day and it chewed up 30MB per day. -_- Root the phone and flash with custom rom could help me out please!

Is there any other way other than just blocking 3G connection? I wish I could just use internet when I need it and download only what I used. little over is ok, but 20MB per day for nothing is not alright for me.. sigh..

hmm I guess you can just use the toggle data widget and turn the data off when you are not using it, when you want to however just tap the widget and it'll turn back on for you. Is that what your looking for?
Can I ask why it is you wish to do this? Do you pay per MB?
I can understand the latter, however there is a great deal to switch off if you want to stop the phone from syncing everything.
try these
* Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile networks, uncheck 'Data roaming'
* Settings -> Location & security, uncheck 'Use wireless networks'
* Settings -> Applications -> Running services, stopped all except Adriod keyboard & Live Wallpaper
* Settings -> Accounts & sync, uncheck 'Background data' and Synch is off for the accounts I have (facebook & gmail)
* Settings -> Privacy, uncheck 'Use My Location'
* Facebook -> Settings, 'Refresh interval' set to "Never". 'Notifications' set to "Inactive"
* Gmail -> Settings, 'Email notifications' set to "Never"
* Email -> Account Settings, 'Email check frequency' set to "Never"

Thank you! I will try this setting and how it goes. Is there push-notification like iphone? push-notification seemed work great with using tiny amount of data.
By the way, I live in AUS and I have 250MB per month to use. If I use more than 250MB, I need to pay extra money for data usage.

I just do not understand why Nexus one is chewing my data while its just sitting in my pocket, when iPhone did not. Imagine 10MB per day is equal to 300MB per month. I saw someone used 3weeks with 7MB download, which is understandable. Why mine doesn't..
A simple method without rooting or any other application would be:
1. Dialpad *#*#4636#*#*
2. Phone information
3. Menu
4. More
5. Disable Data Connection or Disable Data on Boot
There you go. You can enable it same way . Choose first option from 5. if you want to re-enable it without a reboot.
Ran into this problem, too. Slapped APNdroid on it since to toggle data connections, which works great except the app can be a little glitchy.

I think it's hilarious that you're getting so upset because your SMARTPHONE uses DATA. 250mb for a month isn't nearly enough. Do yourself a favor and get 1gb at least... and enjoy your phone!

Well, 250mb for you maybe not enough. But I used it kind of enougly with iPhone. Also, it chewed up for no reason? I did not get any benefits with the usage. I wouldnt be upset if the data that spent by nexus one was beneficial for me. It's just leaking and I wanna know why is it leaking.

I'd argue there is reason. The major focus point of the phone is so that you can receive your data on the go. I get my email, weather, news, IM, sports scores, twitter updates, etc, etc... instantly and automatically. Not only that, but my phone backs up my settings, and contacts automatically so I don't have to even think about anything when I wipe my phone to reflash a new rom.
Frankly without all that, there's not much point to the phone. You might as well just check those things from a full scale computer, and just carry a dumb phone.
Really can't see why you'd want to limit the data usage of a N1 (or any other 'smart phone'). It's completely useless without a data connection!
That said, it really shouldn't use much if you aren't doing anything with it. I only use 400Mb ish a month with plenty of use including mail/calendar etc sync all the time, plenty of web browsing, google maps, podcasts and streaming music for last fm.
Maybe you have something installed that's doing something in the background (like your data monitor!?).
I have to agree with the OP; There are cases where one would want to not get constant updates/have constant data usage, e.g. if you travel a lot (internationally), or if you're on a low budget for a period, or if you just don't have the subscription to cover it yet.

Well, I would not start this thread if my nexus one transferes data like yours. Also whatever app I've installed, I killed all of them and still chewing up data. I know this is not the default expereice, so I wrote my exprience to see if anyone else is having similar problem and to find answers from other nexus one users who spent more time with the phone than me.

When my nexus one had setting like your nexus one (first day I received), it chewed up 70mb on that day. I would be happy if my N1 uses the data like yours.
(This is for everyone who read this thread)
By the way, why the hell people replies with their opinion about the data plan for N1? I wrote this on the other forum and I am getting completely different answers. I did not started this thread to ask how much data plan do I need for N1. Why is everyone is just saying get a more data usage plan, smartphone needs a huge data plan. Well, N1 is not my first smartphone and I know I need bigger data plan one day. But before I get a bigger data plan, I want to find out why my N1 is using more data than other users
does it have to do with the rom ur using?
maybe weather update plugin or something random like that?
why dont u try flashing it to the stock rom with no apps installed and give it a try?

[Q] Issue with AT&T data and web browsing

I had a weird problem that just started today. I am able to access data properly through wifi. However, when using 3g/edge, only certain sites are being allowed to load, such as google, yahoo and some apps that use data like tweetcaster and greader.
When I try to go to other sites like xda-developers, engadget, foursquare, etc. the site hangs on loading. Even using the foursquare app achieves no results.
Does anyone else out there have this problem too? I was wondering if it had something to do with the recent change AT&T has made to my data plan (changing it from $15 unlimited media net to $25 smartphone data).

New Galaxy S3 has reached monthly mobile data limit in 24 hours!

After 2 years with trusty Nokia N8 I took delivery of an S3 with ICS on T-mobile here in UK yesterday with 750mb monthly data plan, more than I have ever used before on the Nokia.
I spend much of yesterday downloading Android updates and Apps on my home wifi, no problem.
This morning on 3G i get the warning I have reached my 750mb limit... in 24 hours!
The culprits are background data downloads by Opera Browser (Turbo Mode) 351mb and Android OS background 301 mb.
I have no idea what is going on especially the Opera Browser as I had only browsed a few pages.
Could somebody help me please to identify what might be going on. My first 24 hours with the lovely S3 is turning into a nightmare!
Thanks.
Does the Opera browser try to cache future web pages you may visit in turbo mode, thus using your monthly data?

Remove that opera, and limit the playstore to wifi only in the playstore settings.
Turn the data limit option on and set it to x MB per day / month to control it.
Did the data usage so on the phone give you the warning or did it come from your service provider?
Sometimes i transfer things with samba through wifi to my pc, and my phone reads it as data usage.

Check opera settings and check if it's trying to cache webpages on mobile data, and for the AndroidOS settings, disable sync for your google account and just sync it when you are at home manually, also check other sync settings, see if they are seen as "AndroidOS" not the app also disable Samsung account sync.
And on a limited plan be sure the mobile data limit is set to make sure there are no unexpected fees.
And finally, on the data usage page press the menu capacitive button and check "restrict background data" this will ensure there is no data being transfered in the background unless you are on WiFi, for example your google account will not sync out and about, but it will once you connect to WiFi.
thank you for all these quick responses. To answer questions. I have since switched off background data as soon as i found out. T mobile website not yet able to show my usage to see if phone mistook wifi use for 3g. Opera turbo is supposed to shrink data before it gets to phone. My usage from 14th Oct to today (so 2 days) is 198MB, which is including everything, background data is about 56.66MB, that includes Android OS, dropbox, skype and a few more apps.
Depending on the apps installed you could see some huge background data numbers. As for your browser I would swap Opera for Firefox or chrome, chrome for me has used 150KB background data for me and caching websites is only done over wifi by default.
Dont know if you're using Picassa as well? I've heard this can also be one of the culprits when syncing...
I dont use it myself so dont know..
Lol, sync Picasa album should be the culprit, turn it off

luckily for you (and me!) T-Mobile don't charge anything if you go over limit and they still let you browse, email, facebook, tweet etc. only restrict streaming videos!

Email used 4GB of data in 4 days?

I haven't had this problem before, though for some reason my email decided to use a ridiculous amount of data in 4 days, I'm not sure why and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I haven't changed anything since I got the phone. The settings are to check every 15 minutes in the background for new email. For now, I've restricted the background data, but I'm wondering why this happened. Any ideas?

I put data restriction on the phone and will call provider tomorrow to see if the can cut off data if it reaches certain number.
Thank god we have 6gb monthly or there would be some insane bill to pay.

You can always set a warning and also set a limit on your android phone so it doesn't use up all your data or go over. It's extremely helpful.
Also, check your data usage through your carrier first. It's possible that the phone may have calculated the data wrong (could be a bug or something).
Third, if it has really really used 4gb of your data then it maybe because you synced all your emails and while syncing all the emails, it may have amounted to 3-4GB (which doesn't seem possible to me). Good luck!
what sort of email is it? pop3 or is it an online system (hotmail, gmail, yahoo)
if you set it up for IMAP or some sort of setting to sync your entire online based mailbox with your phone it could easily bring in that much data... after years I finally cleaned out my gmail and am back down to only using 2GB haha
Isn't syncing with email done when you setup new email account ?
The phone worked fine for 2 months and this happened all of a sudden without adding any new additional email aco****s.
Could it be you got emails with large attachments like photos or pdf files? If photos are not resized they can easily run over 3 MB a piece. Same thing with pdf files they can be huge.
Sounds to me like another Auto-Sync funjob. When my girlfriend got her old HTC, it plastered 450mb in just 3 days syncing only e-mail. If I was you, I'd turn it off. Auto-Sync that is. Unless you desperately need it sync'd then I don't see the harm in simply opening the app and clicking refresh
When you first set up your email account on your mobile device, make sure next time you sync your mail via wifi. If the image download button is check under settings, un-check it.
That's ridiculous, I'm on my email every day, pandora for hours, youtube constantly, and amazon mp3 cloud, and have only used 550MB since January 31st.

I won't disagree that that is a crazy amount of data use... I'm almost done with my first month on the tmobile $30 plan (5gb) and dispite downloading a few movies via torrent, a good bit of netflix and hulu, LOTS of pandora and streaming music from my google and i'm right around 4gb so far after trying to kill all 5gb...
Well sinfamy, it all depends how much you use it. I can say that in 2 days, according to my device data usage I've used 728mb of data.
