My Wildfire with 2.2.1 - Wildfire General

I have rooted and upgraded my Wildfire to 2.2.1 from 2.1, worked fine and still does, but i have lost root.
I have read that i cant use the "unrevoked method" yet to get root back as it wont work with Froyo. Is this true or is it safe to do so.
If I cant use that method then can anyone suggest another way.
Thanks and be gentle as i am new to android.

Hi, if you updated with OTA update (official) or with RUU, you can't root. We have to wait until some depeloper find out the way to root the new HBOOT.

I updated with a file called signed_121810_120233.zip if that helps.
Anyone know about that file, if its official or RUU

I'm downloading it to see if it has the new HBOOT. Give me a minute
EDIT: It doesn't contain the new HBOOT, so you should be able to root. Trying Unrevoked is safe. If you had the new HBOOT, it would hang, but you wouldn't have any problem.
For what I read, you haven't run Unrevoked yet. Do it.

Thank you for your time and effort, i will try it later tonight when i get back home.
Will post and tell you the outcome.
Thanks

You have done this in the same computer you did the time it worked, right? For the HBOOT drivers in windows and all these things.
Looking at the zip you sent me, you should be able to root, but I guess that if you lost root, there is something that made you lose it. :S
If you want to try to get root anyway, try Unrevoked in Ubuntu. If not, Superoneclick, or Z4root.
But doesn't look good to root by now... :S

Yeah the exact same pc that i first used to go from 2.1 to 2.2.
Is Z4 safe to use

Yes, the worst thing that can happen is that the phone is slow until you reboot, if it can't get root. But htese methods are Temp root. It would be just to see if you can get root access, which I doubt at the moment.

Thanks for your help, i think i will just wait until unrevoked gets updated.

Of course. I just tried with v3.31, which must be the version you tried. I got your same error.
I will let you know. It must be near, because in v3.3 changelog they say "No update for Wildfire yet, sorry", so they are working on it.

[Q] Wi-Fi tether not working after Froyo update. Epic 4g.

Hi guys, it's my first time here, sorry if I'm repeating the same question that others had b4, but I can't seen to find the answer. My wireless_tether_***.apk was working fine b4 I updated to Froyo. What can I do to get it going again?

Go back to 2.1?
I believe you need to be rooted in order for this to work. If you are on just froyo, I dont think it will work.
I have rooted it for a while now. Going back to 2.1? Really?
This happened to me as well. After searching the answer was to go to an older version of wifi tether.
What worked for me was the pre11 apk in the link below.
code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Pre14 didn't work for me had to get 15

Pre15 works fine with froyo. Maybe you could try getting the latest version and installing it. I know this seems like a crazy idea, but how about you give it a go anyhow.
I've tried many different versions, including the most recent one, & no luck, I think that it could be some of my settings. Any ideas?
One thing I just remember, when on 2.1 it asked me for the superuser permission, now it hasn't. Could that be it? How do I give the permission without asking for it?

make sure the version of wifi-tether you use supports your device.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
The above link shows the download and corresponding version that you should use for Epic. I used the lastest version pre15, and it works fine on my 2.2.1 froyo DK28 firmware.
I don't know which firmware are you using, but the pre15 should support the latest froyo
I'm using PRE13 and its working fine for me, used it a couple of times already.. here you go hope this link works.

That's my guess but not sure. one way to check if you lost your root is:
On your phone,
1. go to market, download and install Terminal Emulator
2. run Terminal, then at the prompt line, type "su" (don't include quotation marks) and then hit enter on keyboard
3. if the system says "su not found", that means you lost your root
This may be my stupid way to verify my rooting status. Other experienced users may have better way to do it

RUU'ed now ready to try root options

I have decided to run the full RUU and test out root options. I do not care too much about being rooted so I was willing to do this to help out. I am willing to try whatever to help get root for the new ota.
If any one has a rooting method to try let me know.
I don't have a clue what you mean. What is the "Full RUU" and how do you install any ROM without being rooted first.
Hey man, check your bootloader. Do you still have s-off?

I would try the 2.02 root method, or the universal evo root method, both in the dev forum. Don't use unrevoked.
If people wait i have a few evos i can test. I have 4 just laying around.

HBOOT Driver Installation

I am trying to get to the drivers installed and I am doing what the instructions say, "Turn off your phone, then boot it into the HBOOT menu by holding power and volume down.", but all it does is boot normal, but really fast. Am I doing something wrong, other than being a noob?

you need to pull out the battery first. or disable fastboot in the settings.

Yea, you have fastboot mode enabled, which you can turn off in menu>settings>power management, or something to that nature. What exactly are you trying to install the hboot drivers for? I only ask, because if it is so you can use Unrevoked, I just wanted to give you a heads up that it won't be working for you, and I'd avoid trying it. Unrevoked won't work for the 2.3.3 OTA. If it is for other reasons, then carry on!

Well, you DO need to have the hboot drivers installed for Unrevoked to work, if you're using windows. The problem is that Unrevoked is not yet updated to work with the 2.3.3 OTA. There is currently no root method for ya. The only hope you'd have for right now, is if your phone had been rooted prior to you having it, and your bootloader is still S-off. Other than that, you're going to need to wait until unrevoked gets updated to work with the OTA. I also wouldn't be surprised if when there is an Updated method to work with the new hboot 2.16, that there is a different set of modified hboot drivers that will need to be used (speculation, but wouldn't be surprised). That would mean you'd just need to install them again.
I would just sit tight and wait for the updated Unrevoked to drop, and see if there is anything that changes with their instructions or downloads.

Also, I have no idea how true it is...but I've heard a couple people report that they had success in going to a Sprint store, and convincing one of the techs there to downgrade the phone back to Froyo. Again, that's just hearsay, but I wouldn't be surprised if Sprint had the capabilities to downgrade the system (we currently can't downgrade). If that is at all true, and you were able to get them to downgrade ya, then you could root using unrevoked.

Damn, that's too bad. I wonder if it is actually possible, but they're instructed to not do it....either that or the person who reported it before was full of it! He did say it took some convincing though, and he gave a few reasons as to why he wanted to do it (ie. with the GB OTA netflix didnt work, it borked wireless N wifi, the compass no longer worked, phantom voicemail icons, etc) he complained of all those valid things, and got the guy to do it. At least that's what he said.

Rooting and debloating Froyo

So froyo is leaked and installed and all is fun (seems to run a bit slower than 2.1 to me, especially during start up) but I have the problem of A TON of bloatware.
Anybody played around yet? I've frozen a few of them but unsure of what all is good and bad.
How about root? The newest version Z4Root does not work, it stalls and you have to force close it.
got a link to the 2.2 download?

this is the beta version that was leaked out. Go thru all the steps to get the free download, the waiting and blah blah blah.

Hi!
Well, I made some post with the info that good people make available and that I collect to try to make it easy,in this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211799
I already made the update since 2 days ago and very happy, in my case I found very usefull that at leats by now some usefull 2.2 tricks are very welcome like move some apps to sdcard and few other, but as new detail in my case the 2.2 update is detecting one of my 2 batteries as non original moto, and refuse to charge it, but in 2.1 it works perfect and could be charged...
So, for me is stable and hope that could be better the final release (if it may really happen, since Moto put down the page about the release.... :-/ so could be lucky that at least we have this beta, for possible future roms)
Best regards!
Froyo runs faster and it has a great file explorer built in. The only thing that sucks is that there is even more bloatware from AT&T
I have the phone unlocked and in Canada so my unlock stayed and unknown sources is still available after the upgrade
hope there are some edits soon they get rid of all the bloatware, there are legitimately 12 bloatware apps from AT&T on the phone now.
The interface is a little bit sleeker and the boot up of the phone is now silent, which i love since the old boot up was a bit to loud.
xaser, your guide is what I followed to do mine and I really apprecite your time to put it up. Worked great.
Somebody said the full update is up on moto, anybody got a link? I couldn't find anything.
No I have not tried an older version.
Anybody had any luck with a root on the beta? Or the full version either one?
Are we sure this "beta" isn't the full version? The Android Version in About Phone just says 2.2.2 instead of 2.2.2b like i'd expect with a beta.

I didn't need to reflash, I used RSD to downgrade. Since I had my phone rooted. then I just ran the official upgrade and it's been running like butter for me, real smooth.
I've searched all over for info on rooting froyo on the Flipside and it looks like it's going to take awhile because they locked the phone down tight and the few guys that have rooted the phone have started experiencing problems with the phone because of the root.

What do you mean newer version? Are you following the downgrade guide that requires adb to push, execute some files, and flash all by adb. When you downgrade, you don't simply flash the pd15img.zip you should follow the guide.

Look in my signature, see a link to Wiki. Open it, go to section "Root", subsection "Gingerbread 2.3.4". There will be a guide which needs to be executed IN FULL.
Try and read this with caution NOT ME OR THE PERSON WHO MADE THIS IS REPONSIBLE... it has a one click downgrade and a one click root.. after all that is down, there's a root version of gingerbread available... one step at a time...
