[Q] galaxy3 speed - Galaxy 3 General

Hi, I want to ask as to the galaxy 3 at a speed of the system if they are installed many applications. Apparently, the operation of the system slows down a bit. Is it true?

Yes, but not much and you can use taskkiler.

Does Launcherpro fix the lag?

Hey all. I'm considering this phone as my first Android purchase because it's on a really good plan where I live. I've heard multiple, semi-contradictory reports of lag problems with this handset due to the TouchWiz 3.0 interface.
Quick questions:
How bad is it?
Does the fabled Launcherpro UI replacement app fix the lag?
Oh, and if it's not too much to ask, one further query:
Is there a way to backup pre-installed apps?
The telco I want to get this phone with has pre-installed a bunch of stuff that might be useful in tracking my usage etc. In the event of rooting and ROMing this thing, I may want to keep those apps and re-install them after flashing the ROM.
Thanks in advance
im in the same position as you.
the mention of slight lag keeps cropping up. This worries me. I will be coming from a HTC Desire. I am wanting speed improvements, not slow downs.
Can anyone advise?
Also - in preperation for my new galaxy, I installed Launcher Pro on my Desire to see what it is like. It is ok. A bit laggy tho (more so than stock). Then I tried the ADW Launcher (which doesnt get talked about as much coz presumebly it isnt as good). I found it very smooth and just as smooth as stock Sense. Therefore.. maybe you guys should be trying ADW launcher instead
I've used both launcherpro and touchwiz and the only time I've seen any lag with either was when the phone ran out of RAM(or below 60mb).
lagging might be solved by installing custom rom
I don't have the phone, though i've been following Paul (Modaco)
forum/twitter, he also had lag issued until he installed custom ROM
and did some changes in it.

good luck.

See, this is exactly what I mean by contradictory. It must be that some of them have it and some don't. WTF?

That's good, but that doesn't really answer any of my questions all that much. Thanks anyway.
This phone is ultra fast, end of. it'll be even faster when it gets updated to access the full 512 megs of ram
compared to the nexus one i had for the past two weeks, the galaxy s has serious memory problems and is significantly slower than the nexus.
As described above, the device is lightning fast until the free memory drops below a certain point (60mb mentioned aboce seems to be about right).
At this point is becomes _very_ laggy, and the only way to get it back to normal is by killing tasks with a task killer app.
The way Android's memory model works, it should never be necessary to end applications manually. And with the nexus this was indeed never necessary.
On the samsung firmware however, garbage collection does not seem to work as it should. Maybe it expectes that there are 512mb RAM accessable (currently the galaxy's kernel only recognises 256). Or maybe it is something else. Anyway, something is currently broken. I'm on the JF3 firmware.

I installed Spare Parts and set Activity/Process management to aggressive, and I've not seen any lag yet (Also JF3 firmware). While it's not an ideal solution, I feel it's better than running a task killer as it doesn't make my phone unstable just because I forgot to put something on the ignore list.
@mickeko thank you, I will try that.
Update: Setting Activity/Process management to aggressive in Spare parts doesn't help much. It is still very laggy.
I really wonder why mickeko does not have the problem - maybe I have a faulty device?

I had quite severe lag problems at first. I tried some task managers and they only caused more issues for me. Then I made a full factory reset, it's my first android phone so I wanted to get rid of any weird things I might have caused during my testing (I messed things up alot til I understood what it's about ). After factory reset, I installed spare parts, set to aggressive, and things work fine. I still have some lag, but it's way less than before.
I don't want to install inofficial firmwares quite yet, so I hope Samsung hurries up with the official update which seems to have resolved the lag entirely.
The lag is not being caused by lack of RAM (the device does see 512MB or RAM by the way, not only 256MB as reported above).
Currently the way the device is setup, it is writing all DATA files to the internal storage and not to the NAND as it should. For some unknown reason the internal storage has slow access times which is causing the lag.
There is a hack on Modaco's website that allows you to have the device write DATA onto the NAND and that fixes all the slow down issue however it has a limitation of max 130MB usable space on the NAND.
Samsung can fix this in a firmware upgrade by partitioning the space better.

I never had any issues with apps opening slowly before and after doing the hack I didn't notice a huge increase in speed(it's still noticeable though). Maybe some of the devices have worse access times or something as they seemed very high for such a high-end device?
You can watch my video of application starting speeds:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAE_zKAtMvg
its launcher pro, MinFreeMem on max preset, and apps data is moved to NAND memory.
Just check the speed

I don't know much about the Android inner workings, but Android System Information states 326MB(?) RAM. Which implies that the OS sees less than 512MB RAM on my device.

Speechless.
Yes its fast now, but that speed obtained is only the same speed you get with the desire without any hacks. This phone should be faster, and one shouldn't have to root and hack it to obtain a speed only comparable to a HTC desire . It's not fair coz I want this phone badly but this lag issue is really putting me.of
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
But aren't there problems inherent with moving the apps data to NAND?
(I can't post the link because apparently the mods need to verify my account or something, but there's a thread in the dev forum titled "Fix for lag" that addresses this.)
Ah okay. Over at MoDaCo they're saying that it stuffs up when the NAND runs out of space (as the fix simply moves the folder for application settings to the NAND instead of the 'internal memory,' which is actually an SD card).

Yes there is one hidden thing here: If you have lots of heavy programs like some games, some navigation progs, google earth, you must keep those heavy programs in the old location. I did exactly this - moved to NAND everything except Google Earth, some Gameloft games and navigation. So now I have really fast phone, all my programs, and there is still plenty of space on NAND memory.

Is 400MB+ of RAM in use all the time normal? Also, battery lasts only a day

So guys I got a Defy+ running on CM10 4.1.1 by Quarx, and I'm a little worried. All the time the RAM is almost entirely in use. I tried installing RAM Manager but it didn't change much. I'm also using Go Launcher Ex, but other than that, idk what could be sucking up so much RAM, or is this normal?
Also, sometimes I need to recharge my battery twice a day...
Anybody?
When did this Behaviour start? When you flashed the Rom or after a while?
One reason i left CM10 for CM7 is because CM10 always started to lag a lot after a few days

After a few days... but honestly, when I flashed cm10 there was almost nothing in my cellphone...
It is pretty normal that the RAM is in use - Linux uses free RAM for buffers and caching. Have you determined the amount of RAM used for that vs. the amount used for the system and other things?
It is pretty normal that Android4.x uses much more memory than Android 2.3.x.

No I haven't... no idea how to do that actually... it always shows something like 415MB in use (out of 476MB)... so any app that I run starts going slow and stuttering...
This problem happens to me also.
I use Android Booster and it helps me to free some RAM. But cm10 is not so good as RAM management.
I tried options like
1. enable 16 bit transparency.
2. allow purging of assets
3. untick all apps in HWA.
4. even using different launcher and freezing trebucket.
But system still lags and it becomes more laggy after some time of use.( continuous use of 2-3 days)
So may be they have to work on it as project butter is not so compatible with our defy
Project butter has nothing to do with your device, those are just new lines of code (dalvik java) in the ROM.
The problem is that HWA wastes a lot of RAM, and apparently 475MB of our Defy's RAM is a small size for 4.x roms
Well, I use my defy for 3 days now without rebooting, over 100 of my apps installed, over 100 MB RAM still free and no lags (almost , but system is faster then CM7 anyway).
First it is not a good idea to uncheck HWA for all apps - your system will get slow.
Leave checks for system, UI, launcher, browsers, video and photo apps, games if u use, maps.
Second: switch off from a startup all apps that autostart but u don't need them.

[Q] LG L7 - P700 Tweaks, Optimizations

Hey i just installed CM 11 by Cr3pt on my phone and its really good ROM but i want to ask?
1. What apps can i download to improve phone performace?
2. What are the best cpu setting (governor/IO/MHZ), and what tweaks should i add or i should not add any ?
3. Also i saw this ones http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2630242 are they good, and if they are how to apply them without making conflict with the ROM ?
4. What apps and services should be stopped and how to do that should i freeze them using ROM Toolbox ?
Thanks.

i use autostarts for editing what happens when and if it happens at all (IE when you change network setting or plug phone to pc or install app there is processes triggered by these actions and more. this app allows you to control what runs and what gets forgotten {i disable all widgets that don't use etc})
also cpu tuner allows my gf phone to have multiple "triggers" for cpu IE 100% when screen on and active 80% when screen on but not active and down we go to 30% of cpu power while screen is off again 100% in case you get phonecall or plug in power source (all to be set to your own liking) and i stick with interactive governor but performance might be needed as i dont know what you want to run
IO found THIS thread
3 make full nandroid backup and flash it seems good but considering you on Cr3pt's ROM most of it will be there already so only minor increase in performance if any
4 Q: have you used it in last month or so ? A: no ? So freeze that app (better to stay away from system apps thats for advanced users[i still freeze all live wallpaper related stuff google talk, weather widget etc])
MAKE SURE TO DO FULL NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE USING ROM TOOLBOX(and stay away from boot animations/fonts)

SM-N900 RAM Usage

Hi All
I have an SM-N900 (exynos variant) running 4.4.2 XXUDNB2.
I am usually never bothered about the RAM usage even if it shows very high value regularly. While typing this msg I checked and it was 2.37 out of 2.66. I trust android itself to do the necessary memory management !!!
What I have been seeing recently is this :
Dolphin is trying to load a page... maybe lots of pic nd all.... while doing this if I try to bring down the notification bar, ir does come down but gets stuck on the way.... similarly if I try to scroll the page it gets stuck while doing it.... essentially it is not at all smooth...
Now, if I just launch the task manager, clear some memory and retry, everything works smoothly...
The Note 3 is supposed to be a beast.... when the beast stutters in front of my friends its rather annoying/embarrassing at times !!!
Anyone seeing something similar ?

Well just remeber that your phone its like a pc, if your running several apps on the background the system will run of memory for other apps, its try android manage memory and all but if it doesnt have free memory to load up an app, it will close some to free ram and that will cause lag on the phone, my recomendation is to look on the running apps tab and check witch apps at runing and close/froze the ones that u dont use to clear up some ram, im usually at 600 free ram all the time, if i clear ram i get almost 1gb free. so you should check what apps are messing with you.

[Q] [Help] Poor Multi-Tasking experience

Hello everyone.
My issue is rather simple.
I used to have a Galaxy S3 that had a really poor multi-tasking experience with its very limited 1Gb of RAM.
So I bought the Note 3 that was bound to provide me with enough RAM for a better multitasking experience.
So far it was OK and way better than S3 capability but then KitKat came along and this is where my nightmare began.
Simply put, I cannot take benefit of the 3Gb of RAM I have on my device.
My Galaxy Note 3 is the international version bought in France with a Snapdragon S800 and 3Gb of RAM.
During my every day usage, I ofently switch between a certain sets of applications so to me, it is very important that these applications are not killed.
My original settings :
OOM is untouched, though I tried to set it to light with System Tuner but it did not help.
I have a few services that are launched when the device boot : Network Speed to measure bandwith in real time, OS Monitor to display CPU and RAM usage in real time as well and finally System Tuner.
Under develpoment options in the Settings, the limit of apps in background is set to standard (by default)
This is a sequence of test runs I made to show what is going on and why I deem my multitasking experience poor.
In the aim to offer accurate data, this is the list of apps I am using a lot :
app 1 = World War - a 2D non dynamic video game ;
app 2 = iMobster - same as above ;
app 3 = TweetCaster - a twitter client
app 4 = EvolveSMS - a SMS client. Can take a lot of RAM if many SMS are loaded (over thousands of SMS = 100Mb of RAM)
app 5 = Google Chrome - the web browser (not beta) with one tab loaded, two tabs saved but unloaded
Here we go.
Reboot phone -> 1.5Gb of free RAM (1.9Gb at the beginning then 1.5Gb in average after waiting for the aforementioned on-boot apps to be launched)
Launch app 1 -> 1.4Gb of free RAM
Launch app 2 -> 1.3Gb of free RAM
Launch app 3 -> 1.0Gb of free RAM
Launch app 4 -> 800Mb of free RAM
Launch app 5 -> 600Mb of free RAM
Upon each launch I waited for the app to be completely loaded (no splashscreen or loading screen). Then I check with both OS Monitor and System Tuner's widgets to check up the free RAM (sometimes their data differ, but not a lot ~100/200mb).
Repeating this particular sequence bears the same results : when launching app 5 (Google Chrome), app 1 and 3 are closed.
Some time only one of them. But most of the time two apps are closed.
Futhermore, I notice I can't not get less than 500Mb of free RAM. Unless I use Google Chrome to load heavy websites, there is no way than by launching more apps I will get under this limit.
Simply put, I cannot have more than 4 to 5 apps running in background.
I tried different ROMS :
- 2 based on Samsung KitKat ROMs : Jackyaway and S5 port V6. I have the same issue.
- CM 11. : too unstable at the time but perhaps better because the OS takes less RAM than Samsung.
So here I am.
When I was on Android 4.3, it was nice, Moving to 4.x is a disaster.
What can I do ? How is your experience ? How many apps do you manage to keep in the background ?
You are aware that the default setting for 'keep in background' equals 4?

Then how can I change it ???
This is really common and isn't an issue. Android will cache a lot of resources in RAM. When that RAM space is needed, the cache is freed. Do not worry.

Sorry but no.
How come ..
In Android 4.3 I had better multi-tasking experience (more apps in background) while having a smooth system ...
In Android 4.4,x I have an horrible multi-tasking experience (less apps in background).
I mean I have been doing more tests and it's driving me CRAZY ! After just rebooting my phone, I have about 1300Mb of FREE RAM and then after starting my 4 usual applications, it still have 1Gb of FREE RAM, why, please tell me why would Android feel the need to kill one of these apps after I launched a 5th one ?
This is getting ridiculous ! In what world could Android based on Linux kernel simply decide to kill my apps when it has 1Gb of FREE RAM !
When I was on 4.3 I could have ;
- my 2 2D video games
- my twitter client
- my SMS application
- chrome with 3 tabs opened
- play store opened,
- galerie displaying a picture
etc etc.. all stayed in background. They just got killed whenever I started a heavy application such as a 3D video game and in that case it's completely normal.
Heck I even recalled playing to Asphalt 7 then having a phone call while replying to an SMS (or checking my tweets) all at the same time.
Guess what I can do, now in KitKat ?
Oh god I hate my self for moving to kitkat. Makes me want to throw my phone away.
Search for zeppelinrox's V6 supercharger, I recall it has a feature to allow more apps to run in the background.
I am yet to do this myself, noticed the poor multitasking also.

That could be a solution. I used in on my Galaxy S3 but it did little help since the phone was lame at the beginning.
I never believed I would use it again on the phone I deemed good for multitasking.
But I am glad to hear that I am not the only one thinking the same thing.
I will try the fix and post here my findings. Should you try the same thing, do not hesitate to share your experience here.
Bump
Quite some time have passed since my last post here ... but my problem remains still.
I've juste moved to Cynogen Mode 11 as of last Snapshot (stable) version.
Overall, the system is stable. Much faster, way smoother. I won't miss TouchWiz I think.
RAM usage is lower : now on boot with the same services I like to have, it sill have over 1.6Gb of free RAM.
That's quite a lote I would like to use, but still can't.
But I must be fair, my multitasking experience is slightly better. First because I can finally have other options to switch between apps other than by long-pressing the home button.
But also because it seems I can finally have a few more apps staying in the background.
When looking for solutions to my problem, I ran across this : RAM and multitasking...so bad.
I said : "finally, someone understanding me".
I read all replies, and this is what seems to come out : KitKat seems to have a built-in feature that auto-kills app whenever a limit of active apps is reached.
This limit is around 10 and 20. I don't know where this limit is set, how it is defined, where I can find, how I can change, and why it exists.
I believe V6 Supercharger did change that limit on Jelly Bean and ICS. I thought this limit disappeared in 4.3.... did it come back in 4.4 ?
Does it work on KitKat ?
Well, I hope someone here can help me. Thanks !
Bump to this. I have a Xperia Z3 Compact and experience the same problem... I never have this problem before with other devices in 4.3.. The multitask since Kitkat is just horrible.
