How much battery is used for you with continous usage of 30min/1hr? - EVO 4G General

Just trying to get a feel if my battery is normal or not.
With continuous internet usage over wifi, it takes up 30%/hr on the STOCK battery.
With the Sprint OEM Extended battery (2600mah), it only takes up 10-12%/hr.
So I'm wondering if my stock battery just sucks or if the Sprint extended battery is actually more around 3500mah...
How much battery is used with continuous internet usage for you?

I was just browsing the forums here for an hour and 44 minutes - little g reader too - and the first hour recorded roughly 11 percent of battery loss with straight use, shown in juice plotter. Screen brightness at lowest and wifi.
That said if I was popping tabs left and right and jumping around in the browser it would be a bit different. I think I was on Deadspin for maybe 15 minutes though. Dolphin Mini.
SWYPED from my SUPASONIC

I'm getting about 15% an hour on mikfroyo (undervolted htc 15). that's about what I used to get on older build roms (evio) and stock kernels.

Well, guess I enabled wifi after 20 minutes or so. Between 20-25 percent in 2 hours 10 min didn't have a full charge. Just started using juice plotter to track how little battery gets used when phone idle. Cool little app! Always so late to the party.

wifi strength is excellent, i'm only 8 ft from the source (in my room). i keep the screen brightness at the lowest setting since i lay in bed and use the phone before i sleep for about 30 min.
i'm extremely surprised at the drainage of both yours with just the stock battery. maybe i should try and get an exchange through Sprint.

some more info on your setup? maybe it's a software issue. try system panel to see what's running and how much it's been running. it also gives you cpu speed which should throttle back when there is no interaction with the device.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk

i'm on Fresh 3.5.0.1 with the SBC kernel. I don't have any weird drainage issues over night, i sleep with it at 80% and wake up with it with about a <5% drop. I just have the usual apps running, nothing too crazy. All I use the phone for really is to browse the web.
I find that System Panel doesn't reallly help too much when i had a weird drainage issue a few months back, a hard data reset fixed that.

That pic shows 14% loss in about 30 minutes.
Which is normal - about 0.5% a minute.

That would be normal usage with 3G. Not sure about wifi.

Wherever answers are in this thread should be in mA since percentages are meaningless on the Evo.

look at 90%-83% when screen is constantly on for 30 min. 100-90% always drops fast.

I wouldn't say meaningless. i.e. 10% drain from a 1500 mAh battery is 150 mA no matter how you slice it.

No it's not. It wouldn't be even on most Li-ion batteries in the first place, but even more so on the Evo. The firmware is programmed to oscillate between ~ 500mA and -500mA depending on voltage, all while keeping the status you see at 100%. Download Battery Monitor Widget to see this in action.

setCPU dangers

I get pretty crappy battery life on my poor little N1. Cell standby takes up 49% and phone idle 49% when I go into the battery information. I am considering setCPU but I'm scared that if it's changing the clock speed every time I turn the thing off isn't that bad? I mean having the clock speed adjusted so many times, couldn't that hurt the device's life span?
by default on stock it already scales the CPU to conserve battery
My battery life has increased since I've used this program its awesome
Cell standby and phone idle at 49% each isn't a problem if that's all that's been using it. It doesn't mean each one will take up 49% of your entire battery. If you just unplugged it and let it sit without using the screen or anything, then the only thing using your battery is the standby and idle. So after 2 hours or so of that, you might be down to 90% battery, and both cell standby and phone idle are using 49% of that 10% each. In other words, it used up 4.9% of the total battery each.
As for changing the speed all the time, it will not hurt the CPU, as Android already does that for you all the time. When sleeping it under clocks to the lowest, and when you need to use an app, it clocks it back up to full power.

I've been using it for 4 hours and they're both 49% and the screen is only 2%, is my phone defective?
Have you been using the screen during those 4 hours? Like using it to browse or run apps or anything? Or has it just been sitting there for most of the time?

Absolutely no use whatsoever and it's lost 12%?
That seems perfectly normal. Don't worry about it. It does have to use power to idle there, it is still a running computer, and it also needs to stay connected to the closest cell tower in case you get a call.
When it is sitting all by itself that is all it has to do. Your screenshot shows that in 10 hours it only took 12%. That is very good.
If you used the screen for 5 of those hours, your battery could be down to much less than half, and the screen would be about 90% on that graph, while the idle and standby would be less than 5% each.

I only get 2-3 hours if I'm using it for internet I'm not sure if I need setCPU or of it does it for me
I really wanted a desire rom but everyone goes on about how bad the battery life is on them. It doesn't make sense because the desire has a 1300 battery when we have a 1400.
Ok, that is a problem. When it is idling your phone seems normal, but I am able to get more than 2-3 hours when browsing the web.
SetCPU won't help you that much, well it can help, but it is best to find out why you are so low in the first place. Fix that first to get it to a normal length first, then you can look at extending the normal time to longer with SetCPU and other things.
As for right now, what brightness do you have the screen on, what are you normally browsing on? I usually use it at a pretty low setting because I am indoors, and browse pretty simple websites.
If you use full brightness and watch youtube videos you probably would drain the battery insanely fast.
What are you normally doing when it drains so fast?
30% brightness and just casual browsing, some forums mostly.
Since your battery isn't draining by itself, I don't think it is a rogue program taking the battery.
If you are using 3G with a really bad signal it could do that, as it has to boost the power to reach the tower.
Otherwise I am at the end of my suggestions, you could try reading through a few of the large battery threads until something sounds like it could be your issues. I doubt you're the first person to have whatever issues you have.
I live in rural Canada. I think it's rather mutual that I get crappy service
I would love an extended battery, but unfortunately I know nobody who's actually used one who could tell me how good they are, or where I could even obtain one where I am in Canada.

How did you manage that? I had the phone in standby mode overnight for 9 hours and was down to 77%? This was after a factory reset with no appls installed, brightness all the way down, no data/sync on, no animations, etc.?
Idk I just notice my battery icon still looks full when usual at this time its halfway to aquarter way down idk mauve phone is now in a normal cycle I know I installed touteur yesterday since that was raping my battery and use the official twitter now and been using this app using the engadget app and little web browsing

Uhh your battery will "look 80 percent full" until it hits 69 percent (I think).
Go into settings > About Phone > Status to see what your real battery lvl is.

Mines weird. It charges on standby. Lol tested twice. One day went to sleep for four hours on a 78% charge, woke up it was at 79%. This morning I slept 3 hours it left it on 28% woke up with 29%.... lmaoooo
My day today was similar but not quite as good.
7 and a half hours off the charger and 75% battery remaining. This is with texting moderate web browsing, facebook a market download and heavy GPS usage while trying to tweak setting to get a more reliable fix for the GPS issues.

Does anyone know if switching from 3G/E and vice versa consumes more power? In other words if you constantly switch from 3G to Edge or GPRS does this cause your phone to consume more power than if you were in same 3G cell entire time?

How is your display so slow at under 40%? My usage is always around the 60-75% of battery usage for the display. This is with a live wall paper or regular wall paper. Any settings you want to share with us?

I get 3G most of the time as well, but in many places where i used to get 3G on G1, i only get E now on Vibrant.
Many years ago I read that radios power consumption spikes up significantly when its doing a call "handshake" or switching from one cell tower to another on voice calls. It would be reasonable to assume that because Vibrant radio is weaker, it leads to more power being consumed due to more frequent cell and data protocol type switching.

I think the display percentage is low because the GPS usage I had took a decent chunk of the battery.
No special settings to speak of. I use ADW launcher usually have brightness down all the way unless I am using the phone outdoors (which is not very often) I have a regular background.
The only thing I can say that I changed recently that might be helping my battery life is that I changed my ATK settings to put the security level at medium while already ste to Crazy and to kill on screen off.

So you are using ATK. I had it on my phone earlier this week and in standby mode I was only using like 6% in 10 hours. Last night I did a factory reset (phone was lagging) and did not have ATK installed (had default wallpaper, brightness down all the way, no animations) and in 9 hours I dropped to 77% just in standby mode.
So I installed ATK again today and see how it goes. I haven't installed my apps again and using standard touchwiz (had launcherpro installed before the factory reset). Previously I had ATK set on Crazy and kill on screen off as well. I think I had security on High though.

Man, you even use ya phone?
What is with this obsession of battery life goin on 'round here? I say, as long as you can get better battery life than a stock rom, you've won. Keeping the phone on for a day or two without charging seems like a good idea, but everyday isn't the same, and one day you may need to use it way more than any other day..if you start that day off with only 30% just because you wanted to see how long your battery would last, then you really gotta limit how often you use your phone just so that it can make it till the next time your around a charger.

Display 4%? Is that possible?
I can go a full day and a half, 36 hours, without a charge and I am using the original sense android... and I use my phone normally, I text, read usatoday, tmz, check email a few times, use the xda app... and I have wifi on all the time! What's this beef with battery life on these forums? Mine lasts forever! I just have things update manually, I don't let anything run without my permission.
I do, however, turn my phone off the 6 hours I am sleeping.
wifi is on = low battery usage, atleast in my experience.
Indeed. I got 1 day and 19 hours on stock nonrooted 2.2 back. and i used it for some medium texting. and some gps applications...maybe 2-3 hours max awake time. i dont think you used it much...the excessive 3G usage from FB doesnt mean anything.

According to mine, it's 122 min of screen on usage.
I had this scenario on my phone running myn's rls2 + king cfs #11 yesterday:
since unplugged - 24 hours
display on - 1 hour 25 minutes
charge remaining - 50%.
so i wanted to find out how long the battery would last on standby, and to my surprise.. it turned out to be nearly 58 hrs!!! that was on stock sense rom. non-rooted. and of course with very very minimal use. i basically just left the phone alone on my desk or in my pocket all day.
here is the screenshot i took back in july:
but that kind of battery life is unrealistic with normal usage. I am a moderate user (on the higher side), and i typically put my evo on charge everyday in the morning when i get to work (on weekdays). so, the charge on my phone lasts about 25 hrs with normal usage, that usually means about 4-5hrs of Awake Time. this is after rooting the phone. and i am using a stock rooted sense rom. i have had similar results before rooting the phone as well.
on weekends, i find myself charging the phone about 3 times (over 2 days), as the usage of the phone goes very very high.
i have a charger on my desk at work for the weekday charging, and a charger in my car for the weekends.
i have recently installed setCPU, and havent really seen that making too much of a difference, but that perhaps has to do with my usage pattern.
as pointed out in many a threads, signal strength is one major factor when it comes to battery drain. i live in Atlanta and i have great Sprint coverage where I am located, and that makes a world of difference.

it would help if you indicate the battery life that you were getting on stock or any other rom you were using prior to this. because there are so many variables that come into play as far as battery life is concerned. so that will help put your claim into some perspective

I'm Getting Great Battery Life!

I installed OMGB-6 when it was released. Then flashed invisiblek #21 kernel and the new market. Since I last charged it, I've talked on it for about an hour, used the web-browser (Skyfire) fairly moderately, sent a few emails (Gmail), and spent a total of about an hour of GPS through the application WAZE. I'm left at 22% battery left after about 22 hours of use.
I've been fairly lazy with regards to changing the screen brightness, so it's been on about 50% brightness. I've left sync and gps on during the whole time.
I've been using Watchdog as a smart task manager. I have SetCPU installed, but I haven't used it at all.

50% Brightness?!?!?! Wow....battery life is not worth looking at a dull screen. 100% all the way for me...im using 1800mah from ChiChitech that I got for $20. Seems to help enough.

Hydra 1.13 overclock kernel, stock ROM, stock battery, auto-brightness. I'm currently at 20% battery after 2.5 days. Light usage over the weekend, but there is an hour and a half of talk time in there and a half hour of reading.
The trick to DI battery life is keeping the data network usage/standby under control. If you're trying to send/receive data with no signal, the phone will burn through its battery in 4 hours and I've used 20% in 15 minutes trying to book a flight on a low signal connection.
Realizing this took me a few months since I live in NYC and as such, go through a lot of signal shadows. Some days my phone would be at 50% battery after 12 hours, other times it'd be dead after 6. I now realize that the short days were caused by sync services trying to run when I was in a shadow. You can diagnose this for yourself by going to the cell standby section of the battery usage. If you're over 10% or so without a signal, you have this problem.
You can handle this manually by holding down the power (on the stock rom) and enabling/disabling mobile network. This is a pain in the ass.
I handle this with some simple Locale rules along with the Mobile Signal and Mobile Data plugins. The first is to shut off the data when there's no signal. The second is to shut off the data at work where I'm usually but not always on a wireless network. The third is to shut down the data during my normal sleep hours and airplane mode if I'm at home.
These easily got me to 36 hours so I grabbed an undervolt kernel, which gets me to 2 days of regular use. Daily I do about 15m of talk, 40m reading news/email on the subway, and another 30 mins browsing/messaging/misc. My monthly data use is ~350MB.
While it is likely true that the OP and others have good battery life under their specific use conditions, battery life in general on smart phones is mediocre to poor at best. I have friends with various different models of smartphone (including iphone) and across the board battery life is not good. The exception is blackberry, but I don't consider those competitive from a tech and feature standpoint. Obviously different people are going to have different opinions and experiences based on the various factors that influence battery longevity.
The solution is to stop worrying about it, get a spare or two or three and pop in a new battery when one dies. This imo is one of the best things about the Dinc and Android phones in general. Just my 2c.

[Official] battery stats thread

Once we get charged up (and back down), let's see how the battery life in the S4 compares to the quad core.
Please make sure to include your screen on time, as that is the best indicator of light/heavy use.
pleasantly surprised
I can't believe how good the battery has been so far, 84% after 13hours (over night)
I am a light user. still - that is impressive for stock. I never got close to that with my OG Epic on stock which was usually 3% per hour.

1h, 3M Battery down to 76%.
screen on for 38 min, 33% of battery usage.
Heres mine on a first day full charge...
Not too bad for first day with moderate to heavy use!
This is heavy usage. Screen on time of 3.5 hours. Downloading Max Payne and a lot of apps. Downloading and listening to audio on Google chrome. Lots of Pulse usage. Games, YouTube, and 30 minutes of phone calls.
*edit* Bluetooth and wifi on all day long.

More information is better for those of us living vicariously through you guys. Remember to include screen-on time. Thanks!
Here's mine for the first full day. Should my cell idle be taking up that much of the battery?

one thing im NOT noticing here is Allshare Service taking up a high percentage in your guys battery stats...
on mine its been at 7-9% and i dont know why, i have something waking up my phone when the screen is off and it might be that... ive forced stop, but i check later and its active again, ive disabled the service and the Allshare play in the application manager but still comes back on... hmmm i think im gonna have to root and just get rid of that file, or freeze it or something
Question... Does having all the motion settings on effect the battery? Also does having the NFC and sbeam on hurt the battery?

in addition, the eye tracker thingy?
This is only the 2nd cycle. Going to wipe stats after this charge
I'm still waiting for the second cycle to finish I have the motion controls on and the eye thing and I had no drop at all overnight

I wish I could get some stats like that. The screenshots are while I was sleeping and 7% seems like a lot of drain for it just sitting there. Only thing on was wifi. Cell standby time on is always the same as the time on battery, is that normal?
edit: the phone now shows 79% battery left with time on battery of 12h 46m; cell standby the exact same; screen on at 9% with time on of 48m. I'm fully stock and running power save mode.
Here are my stats. I think the battery life isn't too bad so far but we will see.
are the battery stats suppose to reset when you restart the phone? For dinner reason my persist even after a reboot

No, they will carry over until you re-charge or change the battery.
I was going to make a thread like this, but it was already here! Here are my results after my second full charge and regular usage. The results are on par with my fully modified and decked out Epic. Of course, this device has a bigger battery, but it also has a larger screen. Between the hardware and software upgrades, I'm very impressed with the stock battery life. This includes wifi on at all times as well as signal w/data. Some motion features are enabled, nfc is not, and google sync is off (I use stock email). Now how much further can this be improved?? Remember not to be discouraged, Screen On times will vary depending on what the phone is used for. Showing pictures is much less battery intensive than watching YouTube videos.
