Screen easily scratched? - Nexus S General

Anyone else notice that their screen is easily scratched?
I think I'm pretty careful with the phone and not have it in my pocket with other items like keys, change, etc. but I already have 3 small scratches in a little under 2 weeks. I was hoping to wait for a static cling screen protector but I'm thinking I should just get a wet, Invisible Shield, type one in the meantime since it seems to be easily scratched.

Is there gorlla glass? That's why I didn't buy a screen protector for my epic 4g, but I ended up getting scratches even though I keep it away from keys and change and stuff.
Apparently, fine particles of sand, quartz, etc can scratch the screen, which is bs because my hero got ONE noticeable scratch, and that was only from when I dropped it in the train tracks.

It's glass, so no. Nothing in your pocket should be sharp enough to scratch glass, including your keys. Plastic will scratch easily though.

No gorilla glass on the nexus s
I'm looking to get a screen protector too but just not sure which to go for. I usually go for the £4-5 ones from ebay but I'm guessing that's not going to be good enough for the nexus s.
I haven't seen a lot show up yet on the market and those that have don't get great write ups. Seems a protector is a must though.

You sure its glass? The Nexus S or the Hero you're referring to?

I never trust a screen on a mobile device, which will inevitably be dragged across and impacted by many things over its lifetime pretty much regardless of how careful you are (sharing pockets, being pulled out of holsters, being dropped, et cetera), to remain pristine when left as bare glass/plastic.
I know so-called gorilla glass is supposed to be extremely resistant to scratches, but if you want to be able to polish off your device and not see any defects on the screen after months or even years of normal use, I really think it's wise to invest in some sort of screen protector. Which one you have is less important, since any incident that punctures your screen protector is pretty likely to break your phone entirely (unless, like the people at Zagg, you enjoy taking a router to it).

the nexus s DOES NOT HAVE GORILLA GLASS.
that is 100% confirmed, there is no gorilla glass. However, the screen itself is glass, not plastic.
With that said, a screen protector is STRONGLY recommended as it is just normal glass and not gorilla.
The curved screen is suppose to help against drops, so if you drop it the entire screen won't hit the ground, therefor it shouldn't crack, or get scratched as easily.
Honestly everyone should buy a screen protector or invisible shield for their device, or keep it in a case/pouch

My captivate has gorilla glass and I have no scratches in the glass. I do not even worry about putting my phone in my pocket with my keys. I hate screen protectors so gorilla glass is a must for me. I don't understand why they went with cheap parts on the nexus s but google did the same thing with the n1.
http://www.androidcentral.com/gorilla-glass-demo-korean-style

nexus s has gorlla glass....100% http://www.androidcentral.com/gorill...o-korean-style
but i got scratches only on back cover......don't like a quality of plastic !!!!!!

Even if the Nexus S does have gorilla glass (I have no idea if it does or not), wouldn't the oleophobic coating on it be vulnerable to getting messed up regardless?

My Nexus One is seven months old and there's no sign of any scratches on the screen.
According to this post Nexus One doesn't have Gorilla glass: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=3bc418e9a4869ba8&hl=en
What I want to say is that the Nexus S can be up to Nexus One's scratch resistance, even the lack of Gorilla glass.

No Gorilla Glass on the Nexus S. I don't have a single scratch on my N1 after a year. My Nexus S got a scratch within a week. I think its less scratch resistant. There is a video on youtube of a guy trying to scratch his N1 with his keys unsuccessfully. I am usually always super careful with my phones but I think the curved screen got caught on something. Don't leave it to chance - if you're worried, get a screen protected.

realistically, a screen is extremely hard to scratch

again, NO GORILLA GLASS. http://phandroid.com/2010/12/20/warning-nexus-s-not-gorilla-glass-dont-be-that-guy/
If you think your gonna get it hurt, by a screen protector, even a cheap $3 one will save your screen.
If your really worried, go all out and get an invisible shield.

I've been putting my nexus in a sock until some decent cases come out

I'm going to take my chances. I hate both the look and feel of all screen protectors.

guess what happens when you drop your S2 face down on a gravel road

I dropped my GS2 on a gravel road from about chest high, glass side down. I picked it up and the screen was completely dusty and horrible looking and I said UhOh. I got a microfiber cloth and wiped off the phone after blowing as much as possible of the screen. Got it all wiped off, and in direct sunlight at every angle, not a single scratch, blemish, pit, nothing lol. I have a slim gel on the phone, but the screen is naked. Whew!
Cool!
Peep peep.
It's called Gorilla Glass for a reason - gorillas are well known for their high resistance to being dropped by humans onto gravel.
I liked that someone experimented with Gorilla Glass
Swore I was going to read chest pains followed by back to back heart attacks until death.
Glad to hear it's ok.

WINNING ^^
Yeah I decided to forego the cases and the screen protectors after seeing some videos (not produced by screen protector sellers).
I was using Reallook but it got to slimy and even carrying the phone in my pocket with keys, only the plastic edges gets a little nicked. My Captivate's screen never had a scratch and I am the most un anal person when it comes to worrying about scratches on the body of the handset. Under everyday conditions the glass really is scratch resistant and I would say scratch proof in a pocket with keys.

yes i got lucky, and could of also put a weak spot in the glass, and the next drop might not be so lucky.

Gorilla glass is good stuff......The "screen protector" makers are so scared of it they are posting questionable videos on YouTube of how "easy" it is to scratch. "fear" is a great advertising tactic and sells a lot of things. In fact the glass is amazingly resistant to scratching.
I would be more worried about the interior circuitry shock on a drop than the glass.
As long as HTC is in business, the screen protector people will be too. You can look at an HTC screen wrong and scratch it.
You are very lucky. Its a different story if you drop it in the sea or fall in with it in your pocket
Put it this way I've got a very expensive piece of gorilla glass for a coaster. Ohh and a spare battery that I'm too scared to use :-(
I must admit I got a zagg invisishield screen protector and it is awful. Wonder why they bothered ohh try money.

I dropped a galaxy S1 from about waist high onto concrete. it bounced about 5 times before come to rest face down.
The LCD screen under the glass was cracked into 20 different pieces. But the glass itself - not even a single scratch. You had to hold at it an angle to see the broken lcd pieces. So while the gorilla glass is strong, the screen inside itself is pretty flaky, so dont be droppin it!

Yeah Thats what I am talking about....The glass is like Pyrex...maybe even stronger. The interior parts are the issue with drops. That's where those thick soft silicone cases help out but I don't care for cases as the ones that could really protect the phone make it too bulky and the thin cases are a waste and only prevent scratches and nicks around the edges. I don;t worry about those. Never used the same phone for more than a couple years if that long. The back cover can be folded in half and if ever needed replaced easily.

That's nonsense, they scratch just as easily as the sgs2, I will let you decide how easily that is since most htc devices also use gorilla glass

[Q] N4 Scratches? Use a screen protector!

My Nexus four already has two distinct scratches on the glass areas -- one on the front, one on the back. They're very noticeable.
So, I'd be the first to say I don't treat my devices the best -- almost all my phones have a short lifetime for one reason or another. I've had the Nexus 4 though about a month, and I didn't even have a SIM card for it until yesterday. That being said, I'd still carry it on my person to get used to it. The cat has pulled it from it's charging station a couple times, making it fall about 3 feet to a concrete floor (damn cat). Other then that, use has been pretty sub-normal. When I put it in my pockets, I make it a point to not put it in the same pocket as my keys. My wallet (it generally goes in this pocket) is leather and has no metals. Sometimes it'll go in my pocket with my Galaxy Nexus -- which never once has incurred a scratch ever -- no matter how many times I put it in the keys pocket by accident over the years.
I had Invisible shield for my Galaxy Nexus, and it was so annoying because of the friction it adds and it really messed with the contrast -- I took it off -- I thought it was Gorilla Glass and never would get scratched -- I was right!
The Nexus 4 -- I took it by Invisible Shield and they didn't even have the pattern yet -- so I figured I'd wait, but this is Gorilla Glass 2, and I'm super disappointed it's already got scratches. I don't know what to do, so I guess the best thing to do is to let you guys know. I'll probably be calling Google come Monday to see if they have any options. I think I'm 3 days out of return -- I just noticed the big one on the front of my screen yesterday. Ugh.
First of all - wrong forum
Second - how can you be sure that the drops did not result in the scratches
third - I believe the first people to receive the N4 were 17th Nov 2012 so how is it that you have been using it for a month
Fourth - if your wallet has a dust particle on it, you can get scratches on the phone
mine already came with a stock front screen protector, thats normal right? not sure if the back has one either its hard to tell i have bad eyesight:silly:
Gorilla Glass is all marketing, it might be slightly stronger than normal glass but it's more prone to scratching than other screens. And drop videos show the glass will break no matter what if you drop it 5-6 feet. Only idiots at Apple would think of covering its phones with glass and only morons follow in copying such a design on their phones. LG made a poor decision on this aspect. Most cases, most people going to buy a back cover and all that shiny glass back is going to be covered anyways. So whats the point?
I had a galaxy note with gorilla glass, screen got scratched from its own damn pen!
Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, Samsung Focus, Blackberry Bold 9000 not a single scratch, none of them used gorilla glass.
So when people say their gorilla glass screens got scratched, I believe them.
I just hope my Nexus 4 will remain scratch-less in 6 months.
I work in construction and had my phone since 14th of Nov well got a new one again a week and a half later from tmobile and neither have any scratches. U have to really be doing something to get scratches on it. Sand will scratch this glass. Keys and change won't only metal that is kind of hard enough to do that is nickel. Also dropping it a few times like op said will definitely do it. These phones are not scratch proof but it is hard to get scratches with normal use and in pockets. That is of course like I stated u have sand in your pockets!
Gorilla Glass (1 and 2) do not protect against ALL scratches:

Where are you getting the information that GG2 is more prone to scratches? This is bull ****. Out of many thousands of phones sold a few people complained about scratches.
The truth is that the majority of them scratched the screens and do not want to admit it. So calculate the percentiles and I think it is fairly low. So how does this translate into gg2 being easier to scratch?
I have had my phone since Thursday. I have no case or screen protector but I am careful and I clean the screen often using a cloth shami meant for glasses. I have no scratches and often carry the phone in my sweat shirt pocket.
I am not saying that I have tested the durability top much but I surely would not consider this glass easy to scratch.
Btw- I placed this phone next to 2 other devices i have both of which have fairly poor quality glass. You can easily tell this glass is much harder even just by tapping with your finger nail.

Screen scratches

There are lots of threads about scratched, cracked and/or destroyed back glass of nexus 4.....but none about the front.....
I have gadgetshieldz installed but am planning to remove it......how does the front of the nexus 4 hold up to scratches? If you are using your phone without any screen guards how is it holding up?

i´m just using a bumper and no screenprotector since i bought my nexus, and i have 0 scratches on the front glass
it´s gorilla glass, it´s quite resistant...
+1, the front glass is very durable. No visible scratches on mine either, although in my case I use a full leather pouch case that protects the front and back.
A few very thin but long scrathes in the front glass, after 2 weeks of use.
After using SGS for 2 years, I thought the gorilla glass would be almost invinsible, but apparently I was wrong.
I always use a good case but haven`t used a screenprotector in my life so far. No scratches on the screen.
I have a bunch of hairline scratches on mine... was careful with it at first but once I noticed the oleophobic starting to wear off I stopped caring. I plan on reapplying it with something better once I wears it off completely (I read about some pretty cool stuff on these boards a while back I plan on digging up). They don't bother me in the slightest or I'd have used a screen protector to begin with, but that ruins the feel of the screen if you ask me. Bottom line is there's nothing you can do about grit/sand, it'll get you sooner or later.
after two months of moderately heavy usage without screen protection i have 2 microscratches therefore i think itd kinda resistant
my back has a ton of micro scratches, but that's fine, I've been to scared to use the front without a screen protector, just not willing to risk it lol
The front glass is quite resistant to scratches. I have no screen protector on my current s3 and its constantly in and out of my jeans with no scratches what so ever. However I do refuse to put my phone in my pocket with anything else, such as keys, coins etc.
I baby my s3 and I will do the same with my nexus when I get it tomorrow. So i will put a protector on it, since it's a new phone.
I'm using Poetic bumper for about 3 months now and there hasn't been a single scratch yet on the back as well as front,
I don't have a screen protector on the front but got a dbrand on the back. I don't keep my phone and keys in the same pocket and don't use my phone when its covered with beach sand.
Its pretty easy to avoid scratches unless you are the type of person who thinks Corning makes bullet proof screens for phones.

Before I rip off my screen protector....

So i really want to see if the screen protector is causing my touch issues as shown here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1fijZt9-B0
But don't want to rip it off if its not going to fix the problem. Can anyone confirm whether or not this is the case?
Bit the bullet, ripped off the screen protector, all my touch screen issues have been alleviated!!
Screen protectors are a myth. I have a nexus 7 2013 and S4. Been without a screen protector for months on both, not a single scratch. Hell, the S3 I gave my wife (and she ain't as careful with hey phones as I am), not a single scratch. The fortified or gorilla glass on modern devices work quite well under normal conditions. Don't be doing extreme sports or outdoor activities with your N7 and you will be good.

Yeah, I probably won't be wasting any more $$ on screen protectors in the future. Pointless having it on there if causes the device to function improperly
I never had touch issues on my N7. Also, never used a screen protector on any of my devices.

Actually, I would like to believe that. However, the scratched up screen on my old G2X (Gorilla Glass) begs to differ with you. Within ONE WEEK of getting my Nexus 4, it had a small scratch on the screen. I put a screen protector and haven't looked back. My N7 now has a screen protector as well.
Thing is, they're scratch RESISTANT not scratch PROOF. If you're getting no scratches, then great. You don't have a source of sand made of harder minerals than Gorilla Glass. A lot of us aren't so lucky. Dirt around here apparently does have "hard sand" in it, so the slightest bit of dirt in my pockets, and the screen gets scratchy. Thus, screen protector.
Many people don't like screen protectors because of lousy installation. Properly applied screen protectors should be invisible. Getting one properly applied can be troublesome. I watched a friend of mine buy the expensive ones at T-Mobile and had the rep do it. He had no clue what he was doing, and tried to pass one off on them with DEBRIS under it claiming that would go away on its own. They made him redo it again, and the second time, the edges were damaged and ugly where he put his fingers all over it. I have properly applied ones on my phone & N7, and you can't even tell they're there unless you look closely at the edges.
Making a blanket statement based on nothing more than your own personal experiences that screen protectors aren't necessary is hardly scientific or valid. Maybe for you, they're not necessary. Some of us are a bit more OCD about not having scratches on our screens and choose to avoid that with screen protectors.

Once your screen meets any small amount of sand and your screen has micro scratches you may change your tune. It's OK to go without a protector if you don't mind these hardly noticeable scratches, or the feel of the glass when the oleophobic coating finally starts to wear off. However, for those of us who want to avoid this problems, a good screen protector goes a long way. I know that when I resell the device that it will be in mint condition. Besides, a decent, properly installed protector will be unnoticeable.

All "due" respect.... if you research Gorilla Glass you will see that it has nothing to do with "rugged". It has to do with if the material that contacts them is harder than the coating, they WILL scratch. Keys/etc are softer and in theory won't scratch it. However, many of the minerals in common sand/dirt are HARDER than the coating. So even a tiny bit of dirt can cause scratches. If you don't have that problem, then you keep an exceptionally clean environment, and/or the dirt in your area doesn't include those harder minerals.
Do not presume how another person does or does not take care of their devices. I am EXTREMELY careful with my devices. The fact is, gorilla glass CAN scratch. With my G2X, it was most likely when I was doing gardening and fished my phone out with dirty hands a few times, leaving dirt in my pocket that then scratched the screen. These things happen. Thus, you take precautions. You could either NOT ANSWER YOUR PHONE without washing your hands first - or you get a screen protector. The scratch on my Nexus 4 I have no idea how it happened. It happened right after I bought the phone, and is almost invisible but is there.
My devices tend to look in very good condition even after lengthy use. But even the smallest of scratches on the screen bother me as I'm a bit OCD about it.

Gorilla glass is a bit of a joke isn't it?

Apparently this stuff is indestructible, however I've never dropped my phone, never put it in a pocket with any coins or keys etc, it's always by itself, yet I have two sizeable scratches on my screen.
Anybody else having this issue?
I've scratched every gorilla glass phone I've own. Most of the time it happens when I just have my phone in my pocket.
People underestimate the capabilities of dand particle. That is actually the real horror. This is why i have used a screen protector on everz device ive owned after my htc one x. Onthe n4, g2 and g3.. Not willing to risk scratches im rrally picky about that

My OG Motorola Droid No scratches no cracks. Gorilla Glass win

Apparently this stuff is indestructible, however I've never dropped my phone, never put it in a pocket with any coins or keys etc, it's always by itself, yet I have two sizeable scratches on my screen.
Anybody else having this issue?

I totally disagree with your point. Whether its gorilla glass or not, the glass has to come to contact with something to get scratch on the surface of glass and in your case gorilla glass without you aware of it.
Yup, I always end up scratching it with normal usage, but I don't mind anymore, I don't like constantly trying to pamper my phone haha

Never scratched a phone screen, never buy screen protectors.
I took a fork to the Droid X screen and tried to scratch the screen with all I had. There were very slight thin lines but the screen looked great for the most part after such abuse. This was the original strength gorilla glass. None of my other GG phones have had scratches. I've had a good experience with them.
I have never used screen protectors and my previous device was s2 which I had it for 3 years without even a single scratch
Needless to say I'm so careful and I don't even let my screen get dirty by touches and leave it for a while. Because I don't like the feeling of touching a dirty surface.

I was drunk and wanted to show off the gorilla glass
Gorilla glass is basically polycarbonate plastic. Polycarb scratches easily, as anyone with modern glasses will attest to.
But in my experience, the scratches are very faint.
I've got a deep scratch. Only had phone in pocket. Not great.

Rubbish
I always use a screen protector. Considering their cost and what you risk if you don't use one (irreversible damage) I don't see any valid reason to not use one.
Mine has severe erosion from a simple smooth cloth protector that that a little fold in it. And that after the first week with light usage (just work and home where it just sat on my desk).
Never seen such a bad glass, the old S2 has survived much much worse and still has a flawless screen.

No one ever said gorilla glass is indestructible. I'd say 50% of people, android or iPhone user, I see havw cracked screens or huge scratches
Why first thing I always get is a tempered glass screen protector, and I try to have one put on before I even leave the store.
I can attest to the tempered glass screen protector. . Had it on my Note 3, my little kid threw my phone against the wall, glass screen scattered but the phone screen was perfect. Replace the glass screen protector and you're good to go
Don't understand why more people aren't using tempered glass screen protectors

I keep my phone in a pouch/sleeve - cause i hate cases, keeps it well protected.
Do you by chance wear a diamond earring? I ended up with a scratch on my S4 after my gf used it one night with hers in.
