External Capped with 7 gigs left - Nexus S General

I am getting an insufficient resources available when I try to transfer information over to USB storage on my S. I checked and it's showing that I have 7 gigs left. Am I doing something wrong?

that seems very weird. i have yet to hear about something of this sort.. this isnt vent helpful but just to show that people care and read your problem! hopefully some one more knowledgeable comes to your rescue.
happy holidays

I know that sometimes my storage info does not update right away (had the same issue with Nexus 1.) I don't know if it is related to the file system management or just the way the OS tracks storage usage but you may actually have less storage than your device is saying you do. Try going to your memory card via astro or any other file manager and delete the trash file and then reboot. I did this last night and my memory usage corrected itself. Hope this works.

thanks for the quick repsonses guys. Astro is showing that I have 7.19 gigs free. So strange.

Just rebooted for the second time and that worked. Thanks guys

How about you try backing up all the important stuffs and reformat if thats even possible.

Are you running stock or a custom boot.img? I noticed on custom boot.img's I was getting insufficient storage errors... I haven't seen a single one since being on stock 2.3.1 rooted.

Internal Memory issue

Just to clarify I am not talking about the storage in the device.
I have noticed ever since I have got this mytouch that the internal memory is low. Sometimes its around 17m and creeps up to 21m at times. I have looked at other peoples devices that are not rooted and have noticed way higher memory available sometimes in the 40m. I am seeing this using advance task killer or even linda file manager shows this available memory number. My device is rooted with the latest 4.2.8.1 mod. I have an 8gig sd card partitioned in 3 portions and one of the portions is a Linux swap file thinking that this would help it run smoother. I look at the running apps in the advance task killer and some of the time there is 4 apps running. I kill all of them and it boost up to 28m But then later on it comes down to 20m. I have heard people having up to 70m on their devices. I have never seen that ever since I have had this device. Has anyone heard of up to 70m before on a mytouch? Maybe I am hearing lies or whatever but this is confusing with the internal memory and what it should be and what people have seen and what I have seen on my device.
So my question is what should the advance task killer say is normal for memory available on the mytouch if all apps are closed besides advance task killer? Has anyone ever seen 70m here? If you have 70m then tell me what the heck are you running? I am not happy with sometimes seeing 17m and the device is slow as a turtle. Is there a way to use a part of my external sd memory card as internal memory within this os. I dont think the swap file is the trick to gain more memory for the device to use when more memory is needed internally.
Strange my rooted phone has 39M right now...
This site tells you how to move the cache (Tip #3)

hope this helps you
if your device is running slow...something is def wrong....i just got my wife a new phone (same as yours) its rooted running the latest cyanogen mod...no theme on it...and it fast!
her mem show anywhere between 25~40 when advanced task killer is used
hope that helps...
maybe a wipe and re-flash will get you running faster.

Apps2SD Nexus One and Battery Performance

Don'y know if anyone observed this or not:
My N1 with a2sd enabled consumes more power than without. This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone as need to access SD requires additional power.
Anyone observed similar pattern with a2sd?
What does it have to do with app2sd?
That just points out what applications you can move to the sd-card.
You can do that without app2sd too...
Mod edit: Let's keep it friendly here, guys.
LOL I have not notice but I have notice a crazy lag to load icon stored on the sd card maybe I need a better class. I been doing ok on battery so far down clocking to 700mhz and flashing it to MIUI but I wouldn't doubt my app2sd drains battery since is probably always scanning to free cache.
Let's keep it friendly in here, guys.
Personally I haven't noticed any battery drain with the Froyo / Gingerbread Apps 2 SD / Apps 2 USB Storage. While that's a little different than the Apps 2 EXT, but I would imagine them both to not use much power at all. Both internal memory and USB storage use NAND flash memory, and it would be reasonable to assume that they use similar amounts of power.
Spx2000, you could have some issue in your particular installation. Perhaps try wiping cache and Dalvik cache and/or do a full wipe and reinstall your ROM.
I think there is a problem with App2SD that seems to have started with an update a few weeks back. In fact, until I started reading the comments here, I had no idea that it might be the cause. My Nexus One has had extremely slow performance and a slow battery constantly for the last month or so. It all started at once. It was around the same time as the 2.2.2 upgrade, but I swore it started a little earlier. Today I went and turned off the option to check downloaded apps in Apps2SD and it seems that my Nexus is back to its old form. Something must be wrong with the App2SD feature that scans downloads. It doesn't show up as the App2SD process slowing down the phone, but you see system load from processes such as init. If you have the problem, I recommend turning off the App2SD option which checks downloads to see if that eliminates the problem.
it is true that if I use the app in SDCard consume more battery?

When I'm in storage mode.......

.....connected to my laptop all the apps I have located on my ext SD card disappear which I understand but when my Atrix is unplugged the apps I have stored don't reappear on my home screens.
They have to be manually put back on.
Does anyone know why this is.....it's doing my head in.
I'm running the Alien 4 rom with Faux123 kernel if that matters.
Cheers

I don't understand why people move apps to sd on a phone that doesn't need it.

For the same reason you cant access anything else on the SD card when in storage mode, the OS has to unmount it while the computer has access, thus you cant use anything on it including apps, this is normal.
To the first reply, cause I want to and to the second, read my question again. I said I know why they disappear when connected but don't know why they don't return when the device is unplugged.
Never had the problem on either of my 2 desires and wondered if it was Atrix or maybe ROM specific.
Don't post unless you can help. Thanks.
Ah i missed that part :-(..... In that case no idea never tried it as I have 1.2GB free of app storage.
Do they appear in the apps list?
Tried restarting the phone?
Tried a media scan (not sure if it will pick up apps)
Sounds like your ROM is not scanning the sdcard after remounting it.

No probs Nap and thanks Dennis, tried it mate but no joy.
Looks like I'll just use internal storage for ease from now as it gets boring adding them all back after a while.
Thanks anyway tho
you could always buy the dual mount SD program, best .99c I have spent so far. It allows you to mount and still access the sd on the phone. it is very helpful for me.
I had an issue with my ringtones that are located on storage being jacked up during mounts. the issue would occur when I had a notification, call, text, anything that made a noise that used a custom tone while mounted to a PC. After unmount the notification would either revert to default or choose a completely random tone.
I downloaded dualmount a few months back and that issue was resolved. I havent had to reset my notifications except when I flashed to CM, and I can live with that

[Q] AT&T Update burned 8 GB of RAM

Hi Folks,
I've had the strangest thing happen to my nearly new Galaxy S4, and I'm hoping that some of you can tell me what happened and what to do about it.
Recently, I started getting a notification that AT&T wanted to do an update to my phone. I rejected the update for several days, although of course it kept coming back, but it was finally performed one night when I accidentally left my WiFi turned on overnight. I got up the next morning and found a notification that the update had been performed (note that I had never explicitly authorized it). I did notice that several new applications had been loaded on my phone... nothing major from what I can see, but the icons had shifted around a little bit in the application section of the interface... but the really big problem is that 8 GB of system RAM have now disappeared. I'm not talking about memory on the SD card, which I also have in the phone. The system now reports that 8 GB of system RAM have been expended since the AT&T update. I went from around 2.5 GB of expended memory to around 10.5 GB of expended memory in one night.
I had purchased the 32 MB version of the phone, and so I'm not hurting for memory at the moment. But I'm extremely concerned about the sudden (literally overnight) loss of 8 GB of system RAM. Could this happen again with the next update? Is there any way to get that memory back?
I went to the AT&T store where I had purchased the phone, and even their maximum tech guy had never heard of this happening. He had no solutions. So I called AT&T Tech Support and was told, at least by Tier 1 support, that I need to do a hard master reset on my phone. I find this an inadequate solution for several reasons, not the least of which is that it offers no explanation for what happened or if it could happen again. Am I going to have to master reset my phone every time AT&T decides, without my authorization, to update it? Are updates even retained between such resets?
Is there anyone here who can offer any comments on this situation? Is there anyone who has experienced anything like this with their Android phone? Is there any way to get that 8GB of RAM back? I sure would appreciate any intelligent comments on this matter...
Thanks, and best to all....
Chas
Oh let me get this straight because you confused a lot of things apparently ... you have a 32gb version of the phone and the update filled an additional 8gb of storage ... btw internal storage is not ram they are different things so you know ... i find it odd an update whatever bloatware may it had included took so much of your storage ... so it either must be some sort of bugged indicator of your internal storage or something actually got downloaded that consumed your storage ... so check your files and the applications installed to see if any of those uses that space and if not try a factory reset see if it helps ... also i don't think that any future update would cause this thing again if it is fixed ... and also when you have an update available for your phone it's best not to ignore it but actually do it

Well, I see that you are right about the terminology, and I apologize for the confusion. "RAM" refers to the random access workspace of the device, which on my phone is listed as 1.78 GB. What I meant to refer to is what is called "System Storage." I get to it by (a) long press on the central button, (b) choose the lower left icon, (c) choose the "Storage" tab in the resulting screen. "System Storage" under that tab is now listed as 10.43 GB/ 32.0 GB, whereas, before the update, it was 2.4 GB / 32.0 GB. This means that ~8 GB of usable system storage disappeared with the update. That's 8 GB that I can no longer use to store applications, files, etc.. Since the utility that gave me this information came with the phone (and was explicitly designed to give us information on things like active applications, RAM, and storage), it seems unlikely that it is faulty.
I find this whole situation odd as well, which is why I'm looking for a solution. I would love to find someone who has the technical expertise to help me diagnose this problem and find out what happened. I don't have that level of expertise, and apparently AT&T is not going to be much help. 8 GB is huge! It is much more storage than the entire operating system requires! I don't think that was lost by the addition of simple applications; something else happened, something significant.
I do agree that it is best to do the updates when they come in, but obviously, if this happens too many times, even a 32 GB phone would soon be depleted of system storage. It remains a problem awaiting a solution...
Thanks for your comments... Best,,,,
Are you sure that before it said 2.4GB/32GB because that's odd as well ... i have the 16gb version and i have 8.9gb available space which means i have 7.1GB/16GB out of the box and that's perfectly normal also i have an international version which mean no carrier bloatware ... so having the rom with the added bloatware from AT&T taking only 2.4GB of your internal storage is really odd ... 10.43GB/ 32.0GB seems a lot more reasonable assuming u stored some files too ...

Mi A1 - new SD card showing double size than it is

Hello,
I just purchased a 64gb micro sd (samsung evo plus) card and inserted it into A1; formatted it as permanent storage, and now it shows as 128gb with half space used with system files. Tried reformatting on the laptop and doing it again in the phone, same result. As far as i can tell, it still works (still 64gb free), but it is annoying as it shows system is using half, so you dont have the real numbers.
I tried googling, found similar problems (a year ago), but no follow up how/if this is resolved. Im running latest 8.1 (november patch).
Any help / ideas?
thanks,
Jaka
After formatting you need to select an SD card as an external memory and then you will have a real state
All of this is done in the seting> memory setting
permanent storage is an extension of internal storage so all correct.
Thanks for clarifying. What is the difference between permanent/removable storage in terms of what the phone can store on it? My phone is full and need the extra space for pictures, cache (streaming apps burn a lot) and, if the card is good enough, apps.
thanks guys, always appreciate the support here on XDA!

I don't' like an SD as an extension of internal memory, it becomes non removable and if it gets corrupted can cause serious problems with apps crashing. It also needs to be as fast as possible.
I would rather have it set as external/removable, you can still store all your media (music photo video etc) on it but it remains removable and the system does not reply on it.
Hey guys, a bit of an update.. Today a got a notification that i am running out of space, a few days after I have inserted a fresh 64 gig card (first post), but now take a look at these screenshots .. In a few days, my whole storage shows as 100% full, just with system files .. ?
I also do not see this extra space in root explorer (where can I?)
Can someone help with this issue? What is going on here?
Cheers,
Jaka
