Question about "Blocking" purchase items from the Market - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Everybody, I'm giving my 10 year old son an Android device for X-Mas and I want to completely block the "Paid Apps" but I want him to have access to all the "Free Apps" he wants..... is there a way to do this? I thought of an "App Block" app but that blocks everything, can somebody point me where I can find a Market APK that has all the purchase items removed (is there such a thing or is it even possible to make one?)this will save me a lot of money...thank you everybody Happy Holidays!

I would think simply not entering a card into market would prevent this. Also heard a news report about new market versions and ratings for apps. I assume you would be able to block them right though the market in the coming versions. I am not aware of specific apps for this. Sorry.
Edit: look in the market for "android parental controls." Its an app.

The problem is because it gives an option to charge to the account, I'm with T-Mobile USA.

Oh yes.. They added that. Forgot.

Have you tried to call T-Mobile? I think they can put a block on that line so that it cant have apps purchased through the carrier. When you buy a app it has to get it authorized so I am sure they can block it.

Don't know If this works on the market but what your thinking of is called content blocking....but this disabled text messing services that use short numbers(example free google text messaging 411)
The google 411 number is 46645 (googl)

Please post questions in Q&A section.

You can add a content block feature to the line, and it will allow free asps to be downloaded, but any paid content, including ringtones, etc will be blocked.
If your son attempts to dl a paid app, the authorization will be declined

Appbrain vs Market Updates

Hey everyone
Loving my G2... one quick question tho... I just setup appbrain, and according to its update manager, a bunch of my preinstalled apps like twitter, streetview and like 6 or 7 others need to be updated, but in the market app, it doesn't show any need to be updated... is it safe to let appbrain update them? Thanks!
Dave

I manually updated a number of the pre-installed apps through the market on the phone. No issues here, except they now register updates correctly
Haha yea apparently the twitter app is from september and id imagine there's been an update since then... I guess ill give it a try and update the ones its recommending, but ill manually check them in the market first to be sure...
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Oh one addition... just using twitter as an example... just went to the market and it says its "Free" ... as in not installed and u can download now for free... is this kinda weird?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I'm assuming it's normal behavior, both android phones I've had have done this with pre-installed apps (or the gapps package from cyanogen's mod). They don't seem to sync with market. Reinstalling the market one over the pre-installed just updates (if it's a different version) and syncs to market for future updates.
Except for Google Goggles right now

The Market app doesn't search your phone for apps and then check the market. When you install an app from the market, your phone gets some sort of cached entry that says "we just installed XXXX, make sure you check to see if XXXX has updates." So if you didn't have to install the app, then you won't be notified of updates for that app. Or something that's provides a similar end result. It's always been that way.
Cool. Thanks for the info. That's what I needed to know
I love this phone...

update app without user interaction

Hi all
I would like to know if it's possible to update a third party application without user action.
I noted that the android market can self-update the installed apps. The user is not asked about an acknowledgment.
I don't want to offer my self-coded app in the market. I found a way to update this app from my homepage, but the user must this affirm.
you could make a service that runs when the phone boots up that checks whether a new version exists, and if it does it downloads it.

thanks for your help.
That's not the problem. The download and the install works fine. All I want is to get rid of the dialog asking the user whether he want to update or not.
sorry ignore, misread the question

oh I get you. I know it must be possible because like you said the market can do it, but I don't know how, sorry.
ill do some digging and see what I can find.

New Android Market

Title says it all.
I wonder if someone has the apk already.

Wondering the same thing, I posted a thread in the themes and apps section asking this also.
Here ya go. Copy to system/app.
You beat me to it I just saw this on another thread!
Fir those that has downloaded it how is it, and can we vibrant users play the movies?

A downgrade indeed... in terms of features. You can't view the permissions of the app before downloading now, updates don't seem to show up on top. There is a possibility that I might have missed those features since I'm new to this.
On the plus side, it's super fast now and there are more useful categories. I hope they bring back the old features if they've been removed.

I'll need to check that out. Thanks!
But how about the updates? I know there's an app that has an update because I didn't grab it yet. Lo and behold, the app does have an update button in the app details BUT it doesn't show up on top of the list. Maybe I'll try doing stuff like rebooting my phone.
Oh, and one more thing. There's no longer the auto-update check mark like before. Is it really missing or am I just missing it?

My two updates are at the very top and seperated. And of course you can see permissions. Click download and a seperate page comes up to confirm and shows permissions and more clearly I might add.
Also its only showing the updates of apps actually downloaded from the market. I too had two that weren't showing but they did in fact have updates. The reason is those two were backups from like November and I don't remember if I got them from the market or here.

All my applications that needs to be updated are on top also there's still an option for automatic updates.
This is really a good update. I just need a wifi at my house so I can now rent movies.

So it turns out that all of the features that appeared missing (uninstall, auto-update, permissions section) were mostly caused by my apps losing their market links.. and being too quick to judge for the permissions one. After rebooting, the list of all my installed apps disappeared where they were in the "not installed" section before. So I think I'll have to find a way to restore them. It's either with market doctor in Titanium and/or clearing the market data, right?
I hear rooted users can not rent movies though the new market. Is this true?

Yes. This is true.

Yup, rooted phones can't watch movies. I don't see them removing that policy because of piracy issues.
But it really sucks to be this way, maybe they should do what amazon is doing? Making sure that the movies will only work on the account that downloaded it?

Thanks EB for the link. working perfectly on SimplyHoney 3.9.1.
tried the market apk on the latest cm7 nightly, but when i try to open it i get the message "you must add an account to the device to continue. Do you want to add one now?" so i choose yes but nothing happens i logged in to google thru the browser but no luck there either any suggestions??
After spending about 15 min with this, I have to say that this market is a nice improvement. The issues I encountered were all temporary (missing update button, security permissions lists before download, etc). Sucks that they decided to stop rooted users from video rentals. I can see why, but in the end someone will figure out how to bypass that.
If anyone has issues listing their installed apps in My Apps my solution was to use titanium backup to wipe the data of the market app clean + using the market doctor. I also had two accounts in accounts and sync and had to get rid of the secondary one to get to load up my default sync data.

You have to accounts and sync in the settings and add an account. Quite weird that you can't do it through the actual market. I never had an issue doing that in youtube!

Market saying I purchased an app, but I didnt

Huh ???? !!!!
I find it hard to believe Android paid app security is done on the phone !
I can understand perhaps the Market app getting confused, but that shouldn't let you update an app that was installed as a pirate version.
I develop apps and I've never been able to update my paid app from the Market after "sideloading" my app.
And customers who bought via Paypal outside of the Market are never able to update via the Market.

Tried everything mentioned here. Even after flashing a new rom, it still says I purchased it. Even if I go to market.android.com on my laptop, it says I purchased it, but does not allow me to download it.
I downloaded a pirated version of the app so I could try it out for more than 15 minutes, I liked it so I went to purchase it, but with no luck!
Try to unchain the app from Market using Titanium Backup, then try to purchase it once again.

Try to downgrading your Market and then purchase. I did something like that with a app.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using xda premium
The only way it will work is if you create a new gmail account. There is NO other way, no matter how many times you clear data, or use Titanium to remove the app or downgrade market, it will always say you purchased.
Market enabler will also not work.
EDIT: Try this though. Flash the ROM, and when signing into your gmail acc un check the box that says keep this phone backed up with my google account. Do not restore previous backups.
I recently emailed Android Market Support Team, I had exact same issue. This is what I got in reply.
Hi Michal,
Thanks for writing in and for letting us know about this issue - we're aware that some users are seeing apps as "Purchased" but are getting a "Download declined" error. We're presently investigating this issue and will update you as soon as we have more information. I may be requesting further information about the circumstances of this issue, and I really appreciate your continued patience and cooperation in resolving this situation. If you have any further questions, please let me know.

Hopefully this gets resolved soon!
Been itching to play Order & Chaos... tried installing a "cracked" version a while ago, didn't work too well on my phone then. Now I have the Samsung GN and want to give it a try... says 'Purchased' and gives me that error
I have the same issue. This has especially been happening with Market v3.4.4. If you sideload an apk then sometimes Market registers it with your account as purchased but when it tries to access the app it declines as there's no actual purchase. I emailed Market support and got the same reply. It doesn't happen with all apps but with a few. It's quite a random occurrence. No way to reproduce it each time and no way to fix it from our side. It's a Google side issue.
Also, I'm not very sure, but I've experienced this problem with a few apps distinctly after restoring a backup using MyBackup Pro. Maybe it is something to do with batch restoring Market links, when you include apps that you haven't downloaded from Market. During regular usage of my phone, even with sideloading apps, I haven't noticed the issue repeating with any other apps. I only remember it happening after a restore.

Have the same problem with Swiftkey x. Shows up in the market as purchased when it wasn't.
But as I really like it I wanted to purchase it properly, but can't thru the market.
I've since purchased it thru AndroidIt App.
So all good now but any updates have to be done thru AndroidIt app as the market still says I've purchased it then says can't download cause i haven't purchased it!!!!

I have the same issue with Cut the rope and Mincraft PE. I want to support the developers and get updates but now I can't!
I've experienced the same issue before... but I was able to purchase from market.android.com site.

Registered just to say how i solved the problem of Swiftkey X on my galaxy ace. I uninstalled market updates, in manage applications, then go directly to Android market and purchase it, make sure the Market app doesn't automatically update before you try.

The apks? Probably.
Some will. Well most of your 3rd party apps from the market will. Some of the system .apk's won't. For example, I like the HTC Facebook. chat app, but when i tried to install it on Black Ice, it kept failing. Probably because it is a cyanogen based rom. Also my favorite search app is the Quick searck from TMobile with Google,Wikipedia Youtube,

MIUI has its own framework. Therefore, only those system apps will work on MIUI. Same goes for HTC. That's why it wouldn't work on Black Ice.
Also, just in case if you intend on trying to illegally distribute a paid app, some of them (I don't know how many, but probably many) have Market's legality check, and won't function when installed on a system they weren't purchased on.

No, you won't see it downloaded. But you won't have to pay twice - if you paid for an app on your phone and you have the same account on your tablet, you will be able to download it on the tablet as well without paying again - you'll see the app as "purchased".

you can add the acct to your tablet, dl whatever app you purchased. You can leave both accts on your tablet and choose 1 as your primary acct. You can have mor than 1 acct on your device. when you open the app store press your menu button and select "accounts" and choose which one you want to use.
