I installed ADW launcher, and like an idiot, didn't do a backup first, and upon rebooting the phone, it now hangs part way through the boot; It's Syndicate's Shuriken ROM, and it hangs at the "Samsung Epic 4G" screen with the multi-colored X. Is there ANY way to get into the phone's memory and pull phone logs, SMS, MMS and Angry Birds data? When I boot into recovery (although I have clockwork installed, I can only get to the samsung recovery), the SD card shows up on my PC as a drive without media since the SD card is mounted, so the PC sees the phone. ADB shows no devces connected, altough the only adb I have is what came with the andromeda one click flasher. Is there something else that I need?
Is there anything I can flash using the stock recovery that'll get the phone to boot or even only show up in adb? I don't realy care if the modem's there or not, or how stable it is. I've tried flashing a handful of "stock" updates, but all failed with various verification errors. I had CW installed, but apparently it got replaced by the stock one. All I need to do is run "Backup Everything" to get my SMS, MMS & Phone logs, and Root Explorer to get my AB data. After that, I can (probably will) Odin back to what I was running, or maybe one of the newer Froyo's until the official release is out.
If you have cwm you can just reflash a rom without a wipe to get the info you want. The only updste.zip i know of that can be flashed threw recovery is the one for dk28

The problem there is While I had CWM installed, I've always had trouble getting into it. It seems that at some point, the ROM overwrote it with the stock recovery, so the only way for me to flash anything is with the stock recovery, or to extract the flash data from download mode if that's possible. How do people get ODIN dumps? I assume that's just a complete read of the flash.
Been doing a lot of searching and reading, and came across this thread. Using Odin to flash the clockworkmod.tar (which has recovery.bin inside it) shoudl replace the factory recovery, shouldn't it? I tried flashing it and I still get the Samsung recovery. Is there a newer version than in that thread that I can download and try to flash in the same way?
Ok, I actually managed to get somewhere. I got CWM Recovery to take, but it's v2.5.0.4, and doesn't seem to be working 100% right. I can't mount the SD card to USB, it doesn't want to do a nand backup, and the smiley button moved the selection bar up, "H" is enter.
Edit: I then managed to get 2.5.1.0 installed, so now keys are functioning properly, and it would seem I was able to get a successful backup. Is there a way to get into the img files in the backup, or is it likely that if I odin it back then advanced restore the data back, it'll be accesable?
Well, I got all the data I wanted to get. As my last post says, *somehow* I managed to get CWM Recovery to take via Odin (Is try, try, try again, try some more perseverance or insanity? ), and then was able to update it to 2.5.1.0, at which point CWM started functioning properly. I then was able to use the DI18 > DK28 update zip, which got me into a funcioning device, which allowed me to back up the data I was looking to get. Of course from there, restoring it back to fully functional was easy.

First things first, if you flashed a previous version of Clockwork Recovery using Odin, FLASH BACK TO A STOCK KERNEL using this Odin package:

This recovery is *very* safe to use. It does NOT flash your kernel; it is a completely uninvasive recovery method.
How it works: The recovery is packaged as an update.zip that you run from STOCK recovery. The update.zip unpacks Clockwork Recovery onto the ramdisk and restarts recovery. When you reboot, it reverts back to the original, unmodified, stock recovery. So, you will need to keep the recovery on the root of your SD card as an update.zip, and apply the zip every time you want to start Clockwork.
HOWEVER, if you use ROM Manager, all of the recovery installation and management instructions are done for you!
Installation instructions:
Download ROM Manager from the Market.
Flash Recovery.
Choose Captivate as your phone.
Accept the Superuser prompt.
Use ROM Manager to create a Backup.
On the very FIRST boot of Clockwork, you may need to manually select "reinstall packages" if Clockwork does not start. You should only ever have to do this once. It will be automatic from then on.
Watch the backup go!
That's it! This is completely painless and safe! There is no need for Odin anymore to replace the recovery or flash updates!

For us Noobs, can we get more information on where and when to use this?
In reading everything I get some of it, but not all. This is my first hackable android phone, so I am still learning the lingo.
With other phones, I would just Flash a custom ROM or Flash Factory ROM back.
So how do ROM Manager and Clockwork recovery come into play?
Are there any tutorials - not that just give step by step (like above) but explain what is happening in each step or why?

The long and short of it is that you can now flash ROMs and make backups, and restore, without your computer.
The recovery is the tool that lets you do the backups and installations. ROM Manager is a convenient Android front end to the recovery.
After these steps you won't really have to "hack" your phone lol. Root your phone and download Rom Manager from the Android market...then have it flash a recovery (the first selection at the top) choose your device when prompted. Now after that finishes select "reboot into recovery" and as the above post states you may need to select "reinstall packages" (I did). Once that goes through, you'll see your new custom recovery menu. DO A NANDROID BACKUP of your current Rom as soon as you can....then (as long as your current rom isn't messed up, if its stock your fine) from there on out you can play as much as you want with very little risk of bricking your phone. There are others who can explain it better but your stuck with me till they chime in lol. Its a very easy process and nearly foolproof.

Tried to backup from within Rom Manager
I got a "Can't find update.zip" message.
When I rebooted and opened Rom Manager again, I got the "Error Occured" message, but it locked up on me and became unresponsive.
I uninstalled Rom Manager, rebooted, then reinstalled. I flashed CW recovery again, rebooted normally, opened rom manager again, and flashed CW recovery again.
After that I was able to use rom manager to reboot into recovery and backup.
Not sure if mine was just a fluke or what, but I figured I would share.

Titanium Backup did that to me also the first time I ran it....I've had quite a few freezes and slowdowns when opening a program for the first time and waiting for SU to kick in.
It should also be noted that when you chose to partition the sdcard via the recovery menu, it partitions the internal sdcard and not the external.
Maybe that can be made an option? I would like to do my nandroid backup to my external card so I have it for safe keeping.
Everything else working as expected, I enabled advanced options and downloaded the superuser package (from Extras) just to test things. Havent experienced any problems other than the sdcard wipe (which wasnt totally unexpected).
If something should happen to your phone (brick, unrecoverable error, etc), how can we reboot into this custom recovery to reflash the nandroid backup? Can we get into it via adb (adb reboot recovery)?
Yeah, having an external SD Nandroid would be a great option. Not just for safekeeping, but for easy transfer in case of hardware loss or replacement.

I just did a reboot into recovery mode (the normal way, not with rom manager) and I had to click "reinstall packages" to get into the ClockworkMod recovery menu. So I'm not sure but I'm guessing (hoping) that its still available if we run into problems later.
Yep. It's pretty much how the Droid and N1 people are used to doing it anyway.
Clockwork is hella handy to manage and switch between working ROMs on the fly, as well as triggering recovery mode without keypress acrobatics, but having update.zip on the SD card to fall back on using the normal restore and the stock kernel is great in case of semi-bricking, and as this last week has shown us, the Galaxy phones are a bit prone to this.

Also I now have 2 ROM Manager icon in my application screens. 1 will open the program and the other tells me that the aplication is not installed on my phone. I tried to delete that icon but it won't go away, Any ideas? FIXED..I rebooted my phone and the extra icon went away...

I do have one in my phone but there is nothing installed on it yet..maybe that's why..
So I have been trollin through a bunch of threads and searching before I ask. I am rooted running Stupidfast v1.23 and jt super clean rom on DI01. I was reading through flashing back to stock package via oden, but i noticed you need a stock nandroid recovery. I currently have CW. Do I need to get the stock nandroid or just flash the package?
If this has been asked a million times, I am sorry. Please direct me where to go.

I believe if you go to the development forum and check the stickies there a post with the Odin to stock info that has the stock nandroid in it. I think that's where it is - I go to so many forums I can never remember where I saw what. I'm on my phone right now but I will check later to make sure.

A Nandroid backup is just a backup image taken through CW Recovery. You can't have one without the other (at least, not on this phone -- some other devices have different custom recovery tools you can choose to use)
But that doesn't matter anyways, because Odin flashes work regardless of what you have or don't have on your phone. It's like restoring Windows from a recovery disk -- it wipes and replaces everything. That'd be why it's named after a god. Doesn't matter if you're rooted, doesn't matter if you have CWR installed, it'll wipe the slate clean and start you off fresh.
P.S. I'm not sure "trollin" means what you think it means. If you'd gone trolling in a bunch of threads, it's highly unlikely anyone would help you.

You wanted a stock nandroid recovery. That brings your phone back to before you messed it up. Nandroid is a backup program that is run via Clock Work Recovery (which can be run from recovery mode - to run, flash a special clockwork recovery in odin, install rom manager app, run that, click the install button which in turn downloads and copies an update.zip file to the root of your sd card, then from recovery mode *vol +&- while powering up* you ' install' update.zip which essentially runs it)
You run nandroid from therein... or from the Rom Manager front end.
Actually you would run it, except you cannot.
# Nandroid is a BACKUP program. You need to have made your own image before hand for it to be helpful! #

A caveat. It is a large file, and somewhat of a strain to host. You only need to use it if your phone is totally borked and you do not know what else to do. Otherwise, you can often repair your woes by opening up CWR and using the clear data commands (which do not touch the sd card) & the install from sd card option, which in turn lets you find a rom you previously installed on your sd card and rerun it. Unless of course you installed voodoo, in which case you need a whole other thread before proceeding....

Unfortunately the only di01 (first vzw updated modem) posted publicly is the one in the first link. If you need to replace your modem/radio/baseband, then you need to find dj05 separately, or simply have used adrynalyne's restore (linked up top) in the first place.
However, when you do get your phone back to happy - my tired finger asks you to do just one thing:
Run the "Backup Current ROM" option the moment you install Rom Manager - or don't install it!

So i have read through many of the post about using cmw and making a nandroid backup then recovering it.
I followed the directions to put the green cwm on my phone after getting into the green cmw i made a backup and started playing around on my phone. I then went into ROM manager and wanted to get back into green cmw from there I then got a error message about my signature. So again I flashed cwm via odin and got back into it that way. I don't understand why i can't get into it through rom manager and have to flash it everytime.
My next problem is that i wiped the data on my phone and went to use my nandroid recovery that I made it got through most of it but then would freeze while revcovering the data and would sit on something like b5ece2. After waiting for 30min I just pulled the battery, but my phone is still back to stock.
This is not the end of the world for me as I have Titanium backup and got all my apps back, but for some reason can't get my contacts back using google.
Any help is very much appriciated and I am sorry about how long this question became this is my first droid and my first root.
Looks to me like your lynchpin issue is you cannot get RM to launch ClockWork mod recovery.
Solving that is your best avenue for fixing other issues.
I couldn't help but notice that you never mentioned regular (blue) recovery. Did you somehow find a guide to put in the so-called permanent CWR? I would like to understand how you are getting into recovery, because doing it through Odin doesn't parse for me.
No promises, especially without fully understanding your situation, but here is what to do if I am assuming correctly.
Best guess solution:
1. Restore recovery in odin. Get the "Odin restore file for recovery" from this guide:

(a full stock restore odin should do this too, but you would have to root etc.)
2. Download CWMrecovery.tar patch ( http://goo.gl/HELdr ) from fallingup's guide, which is step two of:

3. Flash #1 then #2 as PDA in Odin. Boot. Open Rom Manager.
4. Click "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". Click "Reboot into Recovery"

I've rooted my phone, and followed these instructions here http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-samsung-continuum/ to put CWM on and these instructions here http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/install-dl17-clean-rooted-android-2-1-rom-on-samsung-continuum/ to flash the ROM on. I also added tried adding these test kernels http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=926555 as well.
None of this seems to have stuck. When I reboot the phone after clearing all data and caches in CWM and installing the ROM, it boots up to the standard Samsung Continuum interface. When I go into recovery mode again, it goes back to the standard Android recovery mode instead of CWM. I have also tried CWM manager, but it does not work because the Continuum is not on its list of phones to install the recovery, and because the recovery I manually install does not stick, i can't use the interface to install the rom.
Please, can someone point me in the right direction with what I did wrong/why the ROM does not seem to be working?

May i ask what you mean by, "standard Samsung Continuum interface"? Once you flash a rom, it is definitely going to "stick"... You know that this is just a cleaned up rom, right? no theming or anything? so it is going to look the same (excluding the launcher)...
One thing i can think of is to ake sure that in Mount in CWM that System is mounted, just to make sure..
Also, by following those posts, you SHOULD go to the original recovery screen... Then you need to press "apply:update.zip" or whatever to get into CWM.. if that doesn't work, then do this:
use ODIN to flash the recovery and kernel, and as soon as it is done, hold in the recovery button combination (power, vol up/down)... Sometimes thats the only way to get into it for some people...
Yeah, I just meant cleaned up. When I reboot, my phone still has touchwiz interface, Bing and bloatware. I do use the update.zip to get the CWM recovery screen, which works fine, but when I try to get into the recovery screen again, i have to reload the update file, and when I try to use Rom Manager is says that CWM is not installed.
In CWM, after loading the update file, it says that the three zip files are installed, but when I exit the recovery screen via reboot, the files that were supposedly installed do not take effect.
is "Mount" an option somewhere in the CWM commands?
Yea clockwork recovery won't stick. It's not supposed to. whenever you go into recovery mode you will have to load the update.zip every time. But I have the clean ROM flashed and the peanutbutta jelly time kernel and it's working just like it's supposed to. I think imnuts is working on getting the recovery to stay

i just tried flashing the peanutbutta jelly time kernal and clean DL17 and the two updates, but the phone freaked out after the samsung logo on reboot, scrambling the screen and looking frozen. I pulled the battery and reinstalled adrynalyne's test kernals and but now it is just booting to the regular factory OS.
oh and the system is mounted
After you flash the kernel the boot screen should mess up. It's fine after it boots though

Ok so waited for the phone to boot, but still booting to stock Samsung OS/interface. My flashing in CWM was as follows:
Delete data
Clear cache
Clear davlik
flash peanutbutta
flash DL17
flash email update
flash social app update
reboot
samsung logo, screen messed up but still hearing booting sounds, then finally loads into the stock samsung interface.
What am I doing wrong?
The stock samsung interface WILL remain, aka touch wiz. There will be a couple verizon apps that will remain with this rom. Also what version of cwmr are you using?
oh ok, that would be where the confusion lays. It was my understanding that it was detouchwizzed as well. Does debinging remove bing as the default and only search engine in the browser? is there a mod/ROM that de touchwizzes the continuum?
Also, I feel like this is a stupid question, but if i have this ROM on here, that means I won't be able to get OTA updates, correct?

Not trying to be rude or anything, but I don't remember this ever not working.
I am having issues with 3e. No matter how carefully I follow the instructions (flash->reboot->reinstall packages always fails) when flashing recovery from current Rom Manager and Premium License, it does not work. Additionally, the premium license is persistent in my applications list and no premium ROMs ever show up in my download list. Even when I select Vibrant MTB and either 2.x or 3.x, all I get is a message that states current recovery will be used. I'm still going thru posts for a possible solution.
Try putting this in the root of your internal SD, reboot to recovery and reinstall packages twice.
Yeah, I was misinformed. This is not a result of ROM Manager, this is a result of installing Overstock 1.4.3 which also installs CWM recovery.
If anyone want to do this it is really simple with the SGS kernel flasher app. Download your overstock kernel of choice from here or your choice of kernel that includes CWM from the dev bible, unzip it, move the zimage to the internal phone memory and then choose that file as your kernel with the SGS Flasher.
Note: I have not been successful with going back to stock kernel when I tried to but that may have been because I didn't disable the lag fix.

I'm 100% stock on 2.2Froyo except for root/unlock and am puzzled by this. I know it's not ROM Manager because it worked on my first SGS4G which died and totally bricked after a week (TMO exchanged it happily cause it wouldn't even go into download mode or charge).
What's in this update you linked? Cause I'm smart, but not as smart as most of the posters here and I recognize only a couple things in the file.
It installs CWM.
Are you using a Vibrant or SGS4G?
SGS 4G for TMobile.
BTW... I totally appreciate the help here. I don't know the ins-n-outs of the android phones like I do IOs, not that I'm all that up to date on that either.
Update... Still does not work. I get the failed signatures error and the update is aborted. I tried doing a factory reset and re-rooting the phone in case something didn't work correctly and get the same error. At this point, it's all gravy since the only thing I really needed was the unlock but now I'm in a "I just want to know how this works" mode.

That's correct. I can't apply any update.zip nor does flashing CWM recovery work. It says it's flashing but then when I do the 3 button reboot to get to recovery, it's the 3e version still and when I go to reinstall packages, it starts but then fails as it tries to verify signatures.
