Cyanogenmod 6.1 Overclocking? - Hero CDMA General

I'm running CM 6.1 on my hero cdma and was wondering how to overclock it. I know I've seen forums on here about the same subject but the ones I've seen haven't helped at all. Can someone show me how to overclock mine past 528 mhz?

You're already OC'd to 691mhz if you are running CM6.1.

As far as I know, CM 6.1 already has an OC'd kernel.
If you want a different one thats better, stable, all around amazing go HERE and download Decad3nce's stable kernel (or whatever suits your needs) and flash it <--- I would do this
If you download Deca's mau5 themed rom or AOSP they both are OC'd with Deca's kernel.

Or you can get SetCPU from the Marketplace (or here) and it will overclock you're current kernal. It has different settings for power or performance. I didn't notice much of a difference and it gave me a couple problems on the power saving mode.

I think i will do that. Except I'm just confused by the instructions on that link. Could you try to clear that up for me?

All you do is flash it from recovery, as the instructions say.

is there a difference in performance/efficiency between CM 6.1+setCPU to overclock to 768mhz vs. using CM 6.1 with deca's modded 768mhz kernel?

AFAIK, the stock cm kernel will not oc to 768. That may have changed, but IMHO, deca's kernels are better. He's tweaked them to run smoother and more efficiently. Also, I would suggest the batt tweak instead of setcpu.

[Q] {HELP} Sprint Samsung Epic midNight Rom v3.1 EXT4 CW3

Interested in overclocking my cpu. I have heard of people doing this at 1.2 GHz and still maintain stability and good battery life. Currently installed is Kernel version 2.6.32.9 after granting SetCPU su permission (and checking always allow) I find that the max overclock is at 1 GHz. Obvioulsy this is not a Kernel that can be overclocked. I tried installing some random Kernel I found online using Odin. This however failed during install and "bricked" my phone. I was able to Odin back to stock, re-root, and re-flash this ROM. Does anyone know of a Kernel that will work with this ROM and allow me to overclock? I really like this ROM so far and I want to keep it!
Thanks in advance,
Your best bet may be searching the Epic's wiki page for kernals. The sticky link is located in each of the Epic's forums.

there aren't any kernels right now for froyo because of no source from samsung/sprint
we have to wait till official 2.2 drops
Thanks I appreciate it iSaint! Is it worth flashing a 2.1 ROM and Kernel so that I can overclock or do you think that overclocking is overated and that this midNIGHT 3.1 (which is blazing fast compared to stock) is fast enough!...... I guess will I notice a huge difference after overclocking to 1.2 GHz?

no problem...if you want stability and speed then you cant argue with ACS syndicate 2.1 but i use MidNight which IMO is very fast and i've had zero problems with it so far there isn't really that much of a difference to me on 1.2-1 GHz but test them out and decide what you like 8)
Looks like I'll just stick with midNIGHT 3.1 for awhile. Any tweeks you know of that will improve speed and performance?

the no journaling mod but i think that flashes with the rom(not sure)
and i delete anything i dont use before i flash the zip
open it up system/app just dont delete anything important or necessary things i delete are (swype, browser i replace with dolphin,launcher2,live wallpapers) thats all i do bro
Thanks a lot, I've allready flashed the no journalling mod. But thanks anyway. All in all midNight is blazing fast and I'm very happy with that ROM. Have a good day!

2 cents here.
Personally 2.1 oc'd to 1.3 ghz on acs gave me more speed than midnight 3.1. Rummaging through the phone the advantages of rfs over ext4 are evident. But Playing games and multitasking goes to 2.1 acs @1.3 ghz for me. The phone flies at 1.3. Just try it. you have nothing to lose and you can easily flash back.
Ill definately give that a try. Is that 2.1 include the gps fix?

Easiest way to overclock

What is the easiest way to overclock, I know that a different kernel is needed to overclock, but does overclocking require a completely new ROM
Thank You!
You only need a new kernel if you're running stock froyo.
There's a lot of apps on the market that offer overclocking (SetCPU is a nice one)
Easiest way to overclock is choosing cm7. No extra apps or kernels needed. It has inbuilt oc kernel and options for setting CPU frequency. And greater stability at higher clocks too.

Fastest rom to overclock with?

Hey,
I see a lot of people using CM7 is this really the best one?
Also till how many mhz I can overclock on that one?
Yes Cm7 IS really great, in fact you can customize almost everything, and I really like that feature...
As for overclocking you can overclock I think to max of 768mhz(if I'm wrong somebody please correct me)...maybe you can a little bit more but I think it is kernel related...
Hope it helps,
Best regards

Irrespective of which ROM you choose, it is the kernel which allows (or disallows) you from Overclocking. Till date, there are 2 primary kernels which are available - HCDR.Kernel by Jacob and nFinity by arco, and both OC support upto 768MHz. (I think Deep-Knight has recently developed a new kernel for his ROM, which allows OC upto 600MHz)
Because of this, you can overclock your stock ROM also, if you so wish, by simply flashing a custom kernel.

Hi!
Which kernels can I use for original rom, if I want to overclock? HCDR, or Deep, or what? It will make the phone instable, or not?
Thank You!

You can use any. nFinity MC4 offers more features though, like Smartass Governor. It can be found here:

Else, you can use HCDR Kernel also, if you wish, and decide for yourself which suits you:

It shouldn't make the phone unstable at all. But, in any case, make a Nandroid Backup beforehand.
Thank You
Well M using hell fire .. Cm7 based ....
Which is stable till 729 Mhz overclock m using max 729 and min 490 (I guess)
Phone is Much faster than before and love playing angry birds
I read all the 2 posts, but Im not sure to change the original slow kernel, for a faster. All have some bugs, battery life, wifi, etc...
I dont know, which could be better for the stock rom, or which could be better than the original.
Anyway, I want to try one of that, but I dont know which.
How can I flash just the kernel? And also back up my programs with titanium, or mybackup?
It clears everything like the rom flashing?
Ok, I made it, its cool, and faster. Thanks for the help.
is the overclocking "app" in standard cm7? Or i must go to market or anything else to download it?

[Q] SetCPU - Cannot Overclock?

I'm running the rooted Gingerbread v2.3.4 with S-OFF. I purchased and installed SetCPU from the market thinking I could overclock. Everything appears to be capped at 1 GHz. Maybe I have misunderstood the capabilities of SetCPU? Do I need to install a different kernel to overclock?
you would have to flash a different kernel to be able to overclock past 1ghz. since youre using Sense, Id recommend Darkside SENSE v7
OK. How would I go about backing up my current kernel or if I wanted to revert back, would I just reflash the original ROM?
Yes, back up the whole ROM, and revert to it if different kernel won't work.
Do the backup in recovery.

I've been researching the one mentioned kernel as well as some of the other options. I'd really like to know what your opinions are on thederekjay's v2.6.35.14 demonspeed v7 kernel vs. faux123's v0.0.9? I'm wanting to keep as close to stock as possible - I'm just looking for the ability to overclock. Are there any others I should be looking at?
I'd go with the Darkside kernel. Its newer and you can use apps like incredicontrol or OC/UV beater to undervolt it. No offense to faux. He makes a great kernel. I just had better success with Derek's kernel.

go with demonspeed v7, its more updated and probably has a lot less bugs/more optimizations than Faux's because I dont think he devs for the mt4g anymore, so there hasnt been any updates. You can also try out the UNITY kernel by the Virtuous Team, great kernel as well

I'm having trouble locating this kernel by itself. If anyone has a link, that would be much appreciated. I can only find the entire ROM. Also, in the technical notes, I read this...
Virtuous overclocking daemon will automatically be disabled if an overclocking tools (such as SetCPU or CPU Tuner) is installed. Installing these tools is not advised, as the virtuous_oc daemon responds far more rapidly to screen state changes than any Android (Java) application.

Thanks for the links. I gather from the kernel filename, virtuous_kernel_comb_v10_from_beta2.zip, that v10 is still in beta? I think I read that v10 development has been abandoned. Is that your understanding? I certainly could be wrong. I've read so many threads in the last few days my eyes are crossing!
Not sure. I never really used unity, as I wasn't in the mood for sense for about a year. Don't be afraid of a beta kernel. If you don't like it, just flash v9.
I hate to be a turd, but if you could hit the thanks button I'd be... Thankful. Lol

Nor Quadrant neither Antutu does work on extreme versions of gl notecore

please guys i dont know is it normal or not so let me know that why does it always gets stuck on 3d tests while performing any benchmark using any of the overclocked versions gl notecore kernel. I really like that kernel but also do want some overclocking but whenever i try doing benchmark test using the extreme versions it gets stuck on the earth and moon rotation animation-testing screen and on antutu on the screen where battalion army animation is shown.
I have tried v2, v4, v5 v6 and till v8 extreme versions(overclocked) of gl notecore kernel. Tried and tested on rocket rom v7, kindroid v4.2 v4 3 and v5.1.1 also on latest and greatest clean note v4 but everytime it got stuck. It never happened to me on overclocked franco's kernel r5 nor did it ever happened on any cm9 or aokp roms while running anidroid kernel. So guys if you can help me out your help would be really appreciated
Thanks in advance.

Well some phones do not like oc and uv. You should do a clean install and do not restore apps and system with tittanium backup.
First test your cleanote without your apps. i use nofrills for to set my cpu. Do not use set cpu because many users experiance problems with that.
Good luck
no results.

Hi, as you requested, he did post your thread link over at the NOTECORE kernel thread. However, as I mentioned above, I m facing the same issue and have read the kernel developers answer on this as well. Acc to him, not every phone can support the EX version. Its due to the difference in voltages. My phone cannot handle the EX version as well. However, I m happy to stick with the Standard version. If you're looking for great Quadrant and Antutu scores, just change the governer to pegasusq using SetCPU or any similar app, uncheck Power saving option and then run the test couple of times. I always get around 4400 Quadrant and 7100 Antutu scores.
thanks guys

As has already been mentioned not all phones are equal. your needs more core voltage than what my extreme kernel is configured for. if i increased it you would then complain about heat and battery life getting worse.
Stick with my standard version as that uses stock cpu voltages and frequencies. If you took the time to read the OP and even the last few pages of the thread you would have seen this mentioned.
You can use tegrak to adapt the frequency and the voltage. This way you can set the frequencies that suit best for your phone.
