removing htc items....would.... - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

if i were to say remove the HTC lockscreen, or the HTC dialer on mt4g, would i have no lockscreen or dialer at all, or would it default to stock froyo?

not sure about the dialer... however I know if you remove the HTC Lockscreen.apk and HTC Lockscreen.odex (odex if you are running rooted but stock, just .apk if you are running Iced-Glacier) you will revert to stock vanilla lockscreen

im rooted. so if i go in and remove HTC Lockscreen.apk and HTC Lockscreen.odex ill be ok? i have not installed any roms yet.

yeah easiest way is either Titanium Backup (free) or Root Explorer (paid) but worth the cost if your gonna be messing around in system files.
see HERE for the how to... even though it's pretty easy

already got all that SW on the phone.
i uninstalled the lock screen and it worked after reboot. i am so happy to have the android slider back, with the silence slider...yayyy!
anyone else confirm? i installed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=832374
so if i removed HTC sense now i should be ok?
can anyone confirm if removal of the dialer would be safe? i do notice this...
i have GV set to ask me every call. after i pick call without google voice on the popup, i see the non htc dialer screen, then it goes to the htc dialer.

Removing will do just that. Remove the dailer! I tried that before and had to backup the dailer.apk so I could key in numbers. No virgin dailer here. Guess we're just stuck with it I suppose.

I used Root Explorer to move both the HTC Lock apk and odex to the SD card. Rebooted the phone and had the froyo lock screen. Then learned about the alarm issue. I moved the HTC Lock apk and odex back to the orginial location, rebooted, but still have the froyo lock screen and not the original stock sense lock. Anyone have a clue?
I also tried to click on the .apk to install it in case that was it and it errored.

Please post questions in Q&A section.

yea i learned that the hard way! no dialer at all, and if you remove the htc contacts as well you are really screwed, as it messes with gtalk, gmail and sometimes market installations. i put the contacts apk back in and i have not had any FC issues since. the dialer for some reason is not installing but im thinking that could be because of the 3rd party dialer i have installed.

Lock screen sucks

Does anyone know a way of getting rid of the ugly sgs lock screen???

I was hoping they would change it with Froyo, guess that is not the case. Its the worst lock screen I have seen on any phone, period. I actually don't mind touchwiz but this lock screen is so ugly, it does not go with the tw launcher at all. You may need to go with a custom rom or some app that may change it.
Yeah i guess was hoping i wouldnt have to go the app install route, more system overhead :'-(

Widgetlocker is our only hope
you can use the Mod to restore the Android Lockscreen but it caused a bootloop on mine and I had to reflash so...forget it
I wish we had the Fascinate Lockscreen it uses the "Fit Puzzle" even if you dont have a message
Or just download No Lock from the market for free and remove the lockscreen..
Check out these 2 threads if you're interested in reverting to the stock android lockscreen.
[MOD] Android Stock Lockscreen for JM8,JPH,JPK,JM9,JPM,JPA,JP6
[MOD] Change Glass-Lockscreen to Android with a script
The problem with Widgetlocker is that it is a bit funny I've found sometimes (it isn't always instantaneous. My main problem with the Samsung lock screen these days, is that you can't disable the music widget on it (so if it's sitting in my pocket, the music sometimes turns on and off. I worked around it originally using another music player, but now I just put up with widget locker
and then what? a crappy lockscreen is better than none

I used Tayatuma Lite ROM on my SGS and he includes a really easy way to use the default android lock screen (just involved renaming a file IIRC).

thanks! they both seem waaaaaaaaaay to hard for me to follow though!
Its simple as overwriting a file in the phone rom (have to be rooted)
I gave up cause I tried the JPM odexed file and it just gave me a bootloop and I had to reflash
Using Root Explorer (requires root I believe) it's really easy to do: just download the android.policy.odex (from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784992) according to your firmware version and replace the original in the folder system/framework. Do a backup of the original in your computer before.
To replace the file, put it in the internal sd of the phone through usb and then move it to the system/framework folder using root explorer. Then reboot the phone.
Easier to than to explain, really.

Out of curiosity, why don't you guys like the lockscreen?
Another: se video

You know the stock lock screen looks lame and gives almost zero "look at me flavor" BUT... after using the stock lock screen I came to the realization that this one provides an effortless usability by being able to swipe the screen in any direction, with any finger or thumb, without looking and with any hand. It takes no effort and that is just plain good. My $.02
The problem with the bootloops with the stock android lockscreen mod is caused by file owner and group.
I faced this issue and after 3 re-flashes I finally decided to check the file details on root explorer beofre rebooting (duh). Turns out you just need to go to the market, download terminal emulator and write this there: chown root.root /system/framework/android.policy.odex (for odexed firmwares, check if the path is correct. Can't really recall)
That fixed it for me
if only the text can be removed, and we can add calendar reminders, all that good stuff.

Same problem here. Every app I disabled disappeared from launcher except for Amazon MP3, and it's driving me nuts
You could "freeze" the app with titanium backup, which removes the shortcut icon and makes sure the app cant start. Big advantage is that you can still install OTA's. It comes with a price tho..

Freeze is the same thing as pm disable. And it doesn't work with Amazon MP3. It stays in the launcher and crashes when trying to launch it.

AAAHH Im in the same boat too, there must be a way..
If you have permanent root, and Titanium Bakcup, you should be able to permanently removed the app. Just go the backup/restore tab at the top, go the app you want to remove (Amazon mp3) and hold it for a while...there should be an option for forced removed the app. The phone will then reboot itself, and once rebooted you will find it is completely gone. The only down side is you cant update OTA anymore. But really who cares? very soon we will see custom ROMs popping up everywhere. I am pretty sure they will contain the latest updates.
I haven't tried it myself yet, but I found this on another forum:
com.amazon.mp3/com.amazon.mp3.client.activity.LauncherActivity
Hope this works

HTCLockscreen.odex

Hi guys, Can someone post the original HTCLockscreen.odex and HTCLockscreen.apk. I was playing with the phone root and HTCLockscreen.odex is no longer there. I rename it to HTCLockscreen.odex.bak, but after the restart is no longer there.
I found that after I took the apk and odex out, I was unable to reinstall them- I'm assuming your phone now has the stock lock but it's transparent. The best solution I could come up with was the Widget Locker app- I'm actually very happy with it- it's alot nicer than the stock unlock and the HTC unlock. The only thing I've noticed but haven't looked into much yet is that the genius button long press will unlock the phone, which is a bummer for when it's in my pocket (even though I have all the button unlocks disabled) Hope that helps! I think your only other solution would be to restore a previous backup that had the lockscreen intact.
I would but idk how to attach a file straight from the phone

Why would you ever want that horrid lock screen? Blocks half of the wallpaper.
Use rooted explorer for this. New app, kinda laggy but you can email, copy/paste the APKs and odex. NOT root explorer, its rooted explorer.

[Q] Uninstalling native sms app

Im using the new iced glacier 1.1.4 and even if i turn off the native sms's notifications, it still decides to go off when i get a message. I was wondering if its ok to use titanium backup and uninstall the native sms app since i could use handcent sms. Would i run into problems?
What if you just disable notifications in the stock app? That would do the trick.
If you do decide that you don't want stock app at all I would suggest that you freeze it rather then uninstalling it. This way its gone from app drawer and does not use resources but can be restored at will.
Good luck.
Sent from MT4G.
O ya i forgot i could freeze it. ill try that when i get a chance.. Well since im using this new iced glacier rom, for me theres a bug where my native sms app always go off even though i turn off its notifications and that stupid little sms icon in notifications stays there until i drag the bar down and clear it from the status bar.
But thanks alot for the advice, ill try freezing it.
i can tell you from me doing that several times .. either uninstalling it or disabling or freezing the stock message app that you will run into issues with the picture messaging .. you wont be able to send them . although from what i can remember you may still be able to recieve them ... i think
i tried this due to the handy blocck list in handcent feature .. but with the stock app you can still see whats hidden in there ...
so what i did was back up my stock MMS.apk to my sdcard then uninstall it when i know i want to use just handcent for the block and then re-install the apk when or if i need to send pictures again ..
other than that .. everything else works fine

Only sense based roms are messing up my text message order...anyone have a fix?

So I've spent the past week flashing different roms trying to figure out the issue and the only thing I can figure is sense based roms cause my text order to be out of order. The incoming texts show up before the sent text in the thread. I've tried stock messaging app as well as alternate sms apps and still the same thing. My wife is on stock non root and has the same issue.
Put CM7 on my phone yesterday and ran it all day and all my texts showed right..I first thought it was maybe a carrier issue in my area but why would CM7 work right when sense doesn't....
I'm at a loss on a fix and my wife wants a fix too lol...anyone have any ideas?
Fixed my issue...finally hit me on what I could try and it actually worked...so stinking happy!

I had the same issue with an AOSP rom. weird. I believe it might be one of the 3rd party widgets (not messaging apps) such as the sense widget or the launcher pro sms widget. first I thought it was my theme, reflashed still no go. so I wiped and reflashed then found out that if I clicked on a friends name from the launcher pro sms widget and sent a message it would be out of order for instance when he texts and I reply my reply would go BEFORE his message...
If not the widgets my second theory could be the kernels...
quick fix. just restart your messaging app and delete all the threads.
I tried everything and the only thing that worked for me was putting the vanilla android mms.apk on instead of sense mms.apk
Although the vanilla messaging app likes to force close on composing mms
