Try under Settings, Applications - check Unknown Sources, under Development check Allow mock.
Can also try Sideload Wonder Machine.
My AT&T had locked out non Market apps, took some time to get right combination.

try installing via PC using ADB command in cmd.

It seems to me, MyPhoneExplorer can do both things - I mean backup/restore and app install.

can it restore from a backup that was created with restore and back up though?

Maybe - it depends on the backup structure. Never tried complete backup, but it allows to chose its own format or vCard or vCalendar formats. So - possible, but I doubt, since it creates an image of whole phone file system - system and user data both.
I think, you can try a trick - to restore original backup/restore package by MyPhoneExplorer and then restore what you need from the backup you have. Original programs you can find in special thread 2.1 System Apps - In Case You've Deleted Them... or just try to download through your phone browser the newest original version of backup/restore from m.sonyericsson.com/backup.

[Q] Does Rom Manager do me any good?

I installed unrevoked 3 to root my phone and then downloaded Rom Manager. Rom Manager wants to install ClockworkMod Recovery, but it already got installed with unrevoked. Should I let it reinstall it? Is there any reason for me to use Rom Manager on my phone if I have unrevoked 3 rooting?
Unrevoked 3 gives you clockworkmod so you can flash a new ROM. After flashing a Rom, clockwork goes away. ROM Manager gives you access to clockwork at all times. Also, you can download and flash CM6 from it. I shouldn't even have to mention the fact that it keeps track of all your nandoid back-ups. So really, how many times will you be changing ROMs, and how many back-ups will you have? If you flash ROMs alot, keep ROM Manager. Otherwise, you might not need it.
Hope it helps ~ Pete

Clockwork does not "go away" after flashing with Unrevoked once you've flashed a ROM. It replaces stock recovery.
Yea, I actually agree because I just used Clockworkmod to flash CM6 without using RomManager at all. I even made my backup with Clockworkmod - not RomManager. I fail to see why I need RomManager at all and again I'm looking for advice as to what it does that I can't do with clockworkmod directly (backup, flash rom, unmount, etc.)

This reflects my opinion only:
I installed ROM manager, and yes it does have some pretty cool features that can be run from a single screen. Like you, I noticed that it immediately wanted to install clockwork Mod, the exact same version I was already running. I noticed after installing it that it also self installed multiple files and folders. My concern is purely from a security perspective. The icon for the app itself speaks volumes to me! After uninstalling it, I noticed that several files and a folder with an app called download.apk remained on the phone. Along with several other files and folders in the clockwork folder.
Personally, I would be very reluctant to make any credit card purchases or do any smartphone banking after installing this app. I re-rooted and re-flashed my ROM, including re-formatting the SD partition and extended partition, all cache, and wiped the phone to make sure I eliminated every element of ROM manager.
I have found that I can do almost everything through ClockworkMod, but I have to manually download anything I want to flash first.
Again, this reflects my opinion and preferences.

Theres nothing you can do with rom manager that you can't do manually with clockwork or terminal emulator. Clockwork just makes doing those things more convenient. I always flash roms and do nandroids via clockwork and I don't use the other features enough to make rom manager useful for me.
I only use ROM Manager for the fix permissions option.
i also think you can rename your backups with ROM Manager, but i still dont use it.
How would we do this otherwise? If i remember correctly, its not as simple as renaming the folder
It doesn't even give me the option to uninstall from the GUI. Did you have to remove it via command line or is there a better way?
Typing fix_permissions into terminal emulator will rum fix permissions.

You can mount your sd card as storage and rename then with your computer. You can also do it via astro or some other file manager on your phone.

What I do is delete the apps I don't want before I install the rom. Just unzip it, go into the apps folder and delete the apps you don't want and then rezip it all. You can do this on your computer our with astro. Otherwise you have to use cmd prompts.

Nice! If I'd have known it was that easy, I would have been doing that all along. So will this work both ways, could I just as easily add an APK that I wanted?

Yep you just paste the .apk's into the /system/app folder before you re-zip the rom. I have a couple apps that I add before I install a rom.

New Market is out how to install on non rooted Archos 70

I installed the Market apk with the fix last fall, but today I downloaded the new version of Market that brings movie and books to 2.2 or higher and the install failed. Is there a trick to getting this new market on the Archos.

Make sure Install from Unknown Sources is checked in the Applications menu, though I think the message would say this if that was the problem. Then try deleting the market apk from /data/test/froyo/system/app (I think that's the location, look around in there for it), then reinstalling with the downloaded apk. If it still won't install, try copying the downloaded apk to the location you deleted the original market apk from, and see if market shows up again.

I searched using Astro and the only file with market in the name is
/system/app/0MarketUpdater.apk I tried uninstall, no joy. I try long hold using astro to delete, no joy. I went to settings/applications uninstalled gAppinstaller rebooted tried to install the apk no joy. I have no option to uninstall market (system/applications say version 1.82 when I go to details)
so I am open to suggestions on how to update the market app.

You can't mess with anything on /system without root. That's just a shortcut anyways. The file has to be in /data/test somewhere. It could also be called vending.apk.
Can you post the file here please.
Thanks

Here:
http://www.multiupload.com/2TRUW4L630
1) Install zipsigner 2
2) Download New Market apk
3) Go to zipsigner 2 app and click Choose In/Out and look for com.android.vending1.apk, click it.
4) Select "Platform" under Key/mode
5) Sign the file
6) You will see the new name for this app appeared as "com.android.vending-1-signed.apk"
7) Through back button go to menu and open your es File Explorer or Astro and look for "com.android.vending-1-signed.apk" (make sure you are looking for the App which has word "signed" in it.)
8) Install the App and launch it
why so complicated?
In Orginal Archos Android:
1. Rename to Vending.apk.
2. use RootExplorer or Terminal to copy it to /data/test/froyo/system/app/Vending.apk
3. Reboot
In Uruk or CM7:
1. Rename to Vending.apk.
2. use RootExplorer or Terminal to copy it to /system/app/Vending.apk
3. Reboot
does anyone know how to get all the apps working in the market using cm7?
ive tried updating the fingerprint in build.prop and im still getting limited apps.
maybe im missing something??
let me know...
thanks

oh you mean you want to download the filename.apk and install it yourself right?
by using titanium backup,it works very much like. You can install every application that you backup one by one same as you do with the apk files but the downside is you still dont have the .apk files.
you woudl have to save the apk files to your pc fromthe phone, you cannot download from the market directly to your pc

[Q] Where is Storage/emulated.. folder on PC?

So, I want to run app backup and restore and am trying to copy my backup folder to my PC. Yet, when I go to my device on my PC using windows explorer, I find no such folder. I have show all hidden folders etc set on windows 7. I go on my device under storage and I can see the data is in the folder and I can't figuere out what to do next. I tried another program but, they all seem to use that folder. I also tried to change the folder and it wouldn't work (cannot create folder).
thanks:good:
I would even take suggestions for a program that allows you to backup straight to your pc.

Yes, u can restore your app data as long as you don't format your sdcard partition, to be safe, you can just copy the whole TB folder to your pc.
For sms, you will need to restore system data, which is not recommended when changing roms, maybe just select sms and restore from TB.
Pictures will still be available, again, to be safe, just copy everything to your pc, just in case.
