To be able to install drivers you have to have your phone booted into fastboot and connected via usb (Thanks to mmas0n)
How to force drivers to install:
Thanks to gravis86
WARNING: SELECTING THE WRONG DRIVER TO A DEVICE MAY BREAK THINGS...
1. Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management >Device Manager
2a. NS Right-Click "Android 1.0", and click "Update Driver Software..."
2b. NS4G Right-Click "Nexus s", and click "Update Driver Software..."

7. It will show a list of drivers contained in that folder, select the appropriate one, and click next.
8. It might tell you the driver is unsigned / not verified to work / for the wrong device, etc. As long as you are sure it is the correct driver, then install it. Remember, you are smarter than Windows.
How to install ADB and Fastboot:

If I have helped you please hit the thanks button

I have followed the directions to the letter and when I type fastboot devices it just goes back to command prompt. I tried typing fastboot oem unlock and it just said waiting on device. Adb devices typed produces "list of devices attached" I boot the phone into fastboot mode and and the usb is plugged in but I keep getting the same results. Am I preparing the phone incorrectly? The adb worked with my Vibrant but the fastboot failed there as well. I would greatly appreciate any and all help you may offer. As I am sure you can tell I am another one of those ignorant nubies.LOL

have you installed the usb drivers?
you will have to force them to install

Yes I have. adb works with my Vibrant but fastboot does not and neither one works with the Nexus s. I have read and reread and followed directions but nothing seems to work. Should I be looking to do something on the phone other than booting into fastboot mode? The Nexus S shows fastboot mode at the top of the screen and I have assumed that I just use the computer from there. On my Vibrant booting into recovery does not show anything about fastboot. I really do appreciate your help I am trying very hard to learn quickly so I can be of some help instead of a burden
I don't know how to force them to install. I went in an opened the folder and I assume they were installed. I do have usb debugging enabled
Edit Just copied usb drivers to C:\android and c:\android/tools and still the same results. I have done everything I can think of but i guess I am not getting the drivers installed properly.

to force them, go into control panel-> administrator tools->computer management
then goto device manager in the sidebar.
I cant remember what the device is called but you should know when you find it.
right click and hit update drivers.
hit browse for drivers and find the drivers in C:\android\google-usb_driver
Note: phone has to be in fastboot to be able to install the drivers
edit: I forgot the drivers opps
link:
http://www.fileserve.com/file/ZM9hbvH
edit: this video might help
http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/17/how-to-root-the-samsung-nexus-s/

I just downloaded the drivers and placed them in C:\android and then went into device manager and hit update drivers and then browse for drivers and it said no drivers found. I was in C:\android/google-usb drivers.

have a look in the post above i just posted a link to a vid
edit: are you using 64-bit?

no 32 bit I will look for the video. Thanks so much for your kind and patient help!!!

I think there is a trick in the video to get it to see the device in fastboot
edit: there are some drivers here
http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/06/how-to-set-up-adb-usb-drivers-for-android-devices/

there is no video but I did read the directions and I believe I have done all that they state. Should my PC say installing drivers when I plug my phone in? It did and said one driver failed to install.

yea.
If you don't see a video (at the top) disable ad blocking
also the driver that failed try to force it (using previous method)
If anybody could help that would be great, then I will add it to the first post

Followed this guide and unlocked and rooted my friends Nexus S.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/17/how-to-root-the-samsung-nexus-s/

@shaolinmastr well that's good to hear

I still have no success installing the drivers. Are you sure that the drivers were in the last zip file? I have gone over and over it for the last 6 hours and am at the same place I started. NO adb and no fastboot on the Nexus S and adb working on Vibrant.but no fastboot . I guess it is time to take the Nexus S back and get a refund. It is not worth the lack of results with so much effort. Thanks for you help.

Save yourselfs the hassle and just install PDAnet and you should get the drivers to work.

I was having this same problem and used pdanet to get the correct nexus s drivers. You can dload pdanet to your PC and just plug your phone in via USB andfollow the directions.

So tmello56, pdanet worked for you?
If so I will extract the drivers and add them to the first post

WARNING: SELECTING THE WRONG DRIVER TO A DEVICE MAY BREAK THINGS...
Sometimes Windows needs to be forced to use a driver that we know works, but Windows thinks doesn't. This is similar to what mazodude posted, but is just a few steps further. To do this:
1. Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management >Device Manager
2. Right-Click "Unknown Device" or whatever it's called, and click "Update Driver Software..."
3. Click "Browse my computer for driver software"
4. Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
5. Click "Have Disk..."
6. Browse to folder containing the driver, then click OK
7. It will show a list of drivers contained in that folder, select the appropriate one, and click next.
8. It might tell you the driver is unsigned / not verified to work / for the wrong device, etc. As long as you are sure it is the correct driver, then install it. Remember, you are smarter than Windows.
9. WIN!!!

@gravis86, very good explination will post in 1st post

Just wanted to post my results...
I was using the correct drivers, but was installing them while the phone was booted and connected. I could use ADB and mount the file system, but could not use fastboot. I then discovered that if I installed the drivers while the phone was booted into the bootloader and connected, it detected the device differently and fastboot worked.
Now rooted + custom recovery. Awesome.

ADB Device Not Found! :(

OK, posted this in the Q&A section with several responses but no real answers. Figured I'd post it here before another section where it might get locked or moved.
Anyway, ADB was working fine until a few days ago. Now it says "error: device not found." Fastboot still works just fine. I've tried everything I can think of to get it working again. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the usb drivers, removed the Android SDK from my PC and reinstalled, wiped and reflashed my device, made sure Debugging is on, and tried getting ADB to work on all 4 of my PC's. All running either Windows XP or Windows 7. No dice. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.
The other day it took me about an hour to remember to just turn on usb-debugging and plug it in to the usb drive. I kept going to the fastboot screen instead. Maybe that's your problem too?

Thanks for the reply. If you read my OP you'll see that I've made sure debugging is on. In fact, debugging is also enabled by default after a wipe and clean flash. Unfortunately my problem isn't as simple as enabling usb debugging.
Have you gone from one phone to another? When I made the switch from a tmo->att n1 I had to remove ALL drivers before installing them again in order for my phone to work.
Perhaps try removing ALL drivers and starting fresh?
In Envrionmental Variables, create a System variable:
variable name: devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices
variable value: devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices
With your phone not plugged into your pc, go to device manager and under the View menu, select "show hidden devices".
Remove everything under ADB. Remove anything in unknown devices that says Nexus1 or Android, or Google. Remove the Composite Devices under USB (they will be added back upon reboot if the system uses them) as well as the Mass Storage Devices.
Reboot your system. Plug your phone in and update/install your drivers for your phone.
I used both the drivers from the sdk and from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=613217 to have fastboot and adb functional.
Good luck!

Thanks for the response. I'll give this a shot when I get home. FYI, I didn't change devices. Same Nexus One I've had for the past month. Just one question: When you say,
"In Envrionmental Variables, create a System variable:
variable name: devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices
variable value: devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices"
I don't know what this means. Where can I access this? Thanks!
Just a thought but are you remembering to boot up the phone as normal?
As in not into fastboot, etc.
This stumped me for a few hours.
I kept trying to "adb" while the phone was in fastboot or recovery.
Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs.

Done and done, days ago. Still no dice. This is ridiculous.
Still having problems. Tried everything I can think of, and everything suggested to me by the XDA community. I don't know if this will help any of you guys help me, but when I type "adb devices" into a command prompt, it returns:
* daemon not running. starting it now *
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached
And then shows nothing. So effing frustrating! EVERY computer I have (I actually have tried it on 6 different laptops and PCs) returns the same error and cannot find my Nexus One. WTF happened!? HELP!

I'm sure you're trying to be helpful but, if you've read through this thread, you'd know that I've already done all of that. OBVIOUSLY, I've done all of that because, like I said, ADB STOPPED working. In order for it to stop, it must have, at some point, worked just fine. And it did. It worked perfectly until recently. So, yes, I've installed all the damn drivers I need. But, no, it's still not working. It's infuriating.
debugging mode os on? did you open adb, delete all htc drivers then reinstall them from the sdk. not just install them but delete and then reinstall.
also once in bootloader your good, some instructions say go into hboot, not for me, just right in bootloader, not hboot.

[GUIDE] Getting ADB Setup; An Idiots' proof guide on getting ADB working for Rooting!

[GUIDE] Getting ADB Setup; An Idiots' proof guide on getting ADB working for Rooting! v1.2
Hey XDAers. Getting ADB setup and working is an essential part to rooting your Android device and helps layout the foundations to better understanding the language and using it in this environment. While not going into extreme detail, this is just a quick guide or overview on the first part of rooting; Getting ADB setup and working.
** Make sure your Transformer is not currently connected to your PC yet. We will be installing device drivers first (Step 7) and modify a setting on your tablet first before connecting to your PC (Step 8).
Step 1 :
Download and install the Android SDK.
You can download the SDK from the Google Developer's website. I have linked for you the download page and a direct link to the installer (Note: the direct link may change in the future with future versions, I will try stay on top of this and change the link)
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
http://dl.google.com/android/installer_r10-windows.exe
*New Version : http://dl.google.com/android/installer_r11-windows.exe
You may or may not be prompted to install the latest version of Java if you haven't done so already, install it, and you may or may not have to reboot your computer.
Step 2 :
Once the install is complete, navigate to the directory in which you installed the SDK and launch the SDK Manager executable. It may or may not ask you to download and install the Java JDK, do so if you haven't already.
*When I run the android SDK installer it tells me I don't have the java JDK installed, even though I've installed it already*
Answer :
It says that but disregard it. If you've installed it, it should be fine. When it gets to the part that says its not installed and won't let you go any further simply click back then click forward again and it should allow you to go ahead.
Thanks Crimton!
Click to collapse
Step 3:
Once the SDK Manager is launched, it will look something similar to the window below.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
You will want to do something along the lines of update all or install all. This way it will download all the latest packages and you willhave the latest SDK tools installed.
Once that is complete, you can exit out of the SDK Manager.
Step 4:
Open up a command prompt window. You can do so by holding the WinKey+R, a run window will appear, type CMD, and hit enter.
Step 6:
Within the Command Prompt window, navigate to the Android SDK folder\platform tools folder (Command Prompt command : CD foldername\foldername\foldername\etc)
Step 7:
Now install the ASUS Sync software if you haven't loaded it previously. http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_Pad/Eee_Pad_Transformer_TF101/#download. Just select your operating system, hit download, then install.
Why are we installing the ASUS Sync software you ask?
Well mainly because it has USB drivers that will help your PC operating system detect and display your ASUS Transformer. Without the drivers, ADB wouldn't be able to detect your device most likely!
*For other android devices, you will need similar software from that manufacture. HTC Sync for HTC devices as an example.
Click to collapse
Step 8:
Enable USB Debugging on your android device / Transformer.
Go to Transformer Tablet, go to settings -> applications->Development, turn on USB Debugging.
Step 9:
Connect the USB cable from your android device / Transformer to the PC. It will begin to automatically install drivers, let it do so and complete. May ask to reboot machine.
Step 10:
Once that is done, go back to the command prompt. Run ‘ADB Devices’
You should see something like above, indicating it detected the transformer, if not, run the following ‘adb kill-server’, ‘adb start-server’, ‘adb devices’
Ok, if you are seeing something like the screenshot above then success, you have successfully gotten ADB up and working! Congratulations! That wasn't too hard now was it? You can now follow one of the root guides and follow the directions and you should be on your way to a fully rooted device. Cheers!
-------
Troubleshooting:
In the event you complete the steps above but your computer either will not recogonize the Transformer in Windows as a device, or ADB will not see it please try the following to see if this will fix it for you. You only need to try these if the above steps aren't working for you, but most people, they work fine.
Try uninstalling the ASUS Sync software, and reloading it.
After reinstalling the ASUS Sync software, restart your PC
Make sure your Transformer tablet is in USB Debugging Mode, and connect the USB Cable
You should see a Win7 prompt that says installing drivers. If you do not, try connecting to a different USB port, I've had to do this once on an older PC of mine.
In ADB be sure to kill server and start server and then see if you can see the device
Now, if you are still not seeing it installing drivers, or its not showing up as a device on My Computer, or ADB is still not seeing it, try download and install these ASUS Windows USB Drivers, these may do the trick : http://hotfile.com/dl/118226479/2f89b99/ASUS_Android_USB_drivers_for_Windows.zip.html

-If you want another guide on something else, let me know, and I will see what I can do.
-Yes this has been posted a million times I know, but I thought this might help out those few people that don't feel like looking around. Plus, it has nice color illustrations. Who doesn't like picture books?

Sorry to hear that. Off the top of my head, I'm not sure what could be causing this. But here are a couple things you can try. And please let us know what happens next.
I have a few questions. This is the first real time I'm using ADB.
So I have tried everything you listed above and I can get it to sync on occasion, but I cannot get it to read my device in the command prompt. I type this "D:\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb devices" and it says "The device is not ready." Why is it not finding it even with it syncing at that moment?
Also, do you type "D:\android-sdk-windows\tools>" every time you run something? If so, is there a way to get that to show up beforehand every time instead of having to type it? Thanks again for your help!

1) First thing you can try is the famous 'adb kill-server' 'adb start-server' commands and see if that will get it going. Also 'adb usb' will restart the daemon listening on USB, so maybe that could make it usable. If not, make sure the ASUS Sync app is not running, and perhaps see if there are any running services/apps on your Transformer that could be causing the conflict. Download System Panel Lite from Market and tell it to end all apps, then try again (make sure USB Debugging is enabled)
If you tried all of that, and still no dice, make sure no USB Drives or Memory Cards are connected, then connect the Transformer (w/ USB Debugging), go to Device Manager, uninstall the USB drivers for the device if you can find it or it may show up as a USB Mass Storage device under USB Controllers, then disconnect the Transformer, reconnect the Transformer, it should reinstall the drivers for the Transformer since you already have ASUS Sync installed, then retry.
If again still no dice, try using the ASUS USB Windows Drivers and going to Device Manager and updating the drivers with those you downloaded (download the correct ones for your particular operating system, and then try again.
Now, if this still doesn't work, let me know, and I'll try think of something else. Maybe someone else has had this issue and come up with a workaround or solution, but I'm drawing a blank currently. I'll sleep on it and see if I can think of anything else
2) You don't have to type that up all the time. What you can do is navigate the platform tools folder (or whatever folder has the adb files), then if on Win 7, hold shift and right click on the folder (Platform Tools for example), and you will see an Open Command Prompt here. Hit that, and it will already be in that root folder. But in general, in a command prompt window, once you have navigate to the specified folder, you will be in that folder, so you will only need to type ADB 'command' if that makes sense.

I think I might have figured it out, if this is it. So I downloaded the drivers but I don't think they ever installed. Don't laugh lol, how do you install them? There isn't a .exe file or anything to install them.. I just see files and notes. Do I put it somewhere or what do I do with the 3 files and readme file?
I think that might fix my problem...I hope.. Thanks again for your help. Much appreciated!
EDIT: I think I got the drivers and it still can't find it. :/ I think I'm going to take a break on rooting for a few. ADB is a pain! lol. I might just wait for an easier method or just not root it. We'll see. Thanks again.

If you get a chance, try this on a Windows XP or Windows 7 machine that you haven't connected the Transformer too yet, and follow the guide exactly, and I'm pretty sure it will work without a problem I'm just thinking something has happened when it loaded up the drivers for you initially and that is why you are having the issues, or some background process on either Windows or the Transformer is making the device seem "busy", thus giving you the not ready error, as this process has worked for many many other users.
I was just thinking about it. Maybe I can try that on my downstairs computer. Ill give it a shot Sunday night and see how it goes...ill let you know...

[GUIDE] How to install Universal Naked Drivers

I have seen many questions asking how to install universal naked drivers. Last week I received (loan) a windows computer and had the same issues. I decided to provide the info to help others.
Note: These drivers do work properly for the TF300T even though they may not state that exactly. Also if your tablet identifies as a TF201 it will still work properly.
Note: If you are on windows 8 and having problems please see the bottom of this post #1 for help! This info was provided by prototype7 please give him a thanks.
First some info. Windows thinks it should make the choices about drivers and is designed to keep us from choosing something that might cause problems. We need to maintain control through the process if we are to succeed.
Here are the choices I had to use to change my drivers and a link to the drivers.
windows-start - in search type device manager and return

using this method you don't have to uninstall your current driver
if you deviate at any step windows will refuse to allow this change

I followed all the steps, but it still doesn't work...
I did a lot of research but i have not found the solution... When i use fastboot, it still "<waiting for device>".
Anyone have the same probleme ?
Thanks for the help.
EDIT: Fine it's my fault, the cmd line have to be with -i 0x0B05 option, without it, it doesn't work.

I don't know why some tablets require the tablet designation and others don't. For that reason we suggest everyone use them. It is a code assigned by google that designates the manufacture of the unit. On linux we have to declare them to avoid a permissions error but we don't have to add drivers.
I'm glad you got everything sorted.
I was trying to install these using this guide on Windows 8, but was running into a problem with the drivers not being signed, so here's the solution:

Hello. I am having problems getting ADB to open. I did everything you mentioned hoping that these new drivers would work, but at the end I got a message window with "Select Device" saying;
"The folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device. If the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64-based systems.
I am using a Droid Razr Maxx with CM 10 installed on Android version 4.2.2. I have tried everything to get ADB to open and nothing seems to work.
Thank you in advance for your time

You have to actually select the file not just the directory. By only selecting the directory you give windows a choice. If windows has a choice it will always refuse to install.
Point windows to the android_winusb.inf file and it should install properly.

That should be the proper file. In folder options there is probably a check in "Hide Known File Types". This will keep you from seeing certain extensions. Windows uses the inf extension for setup information.
Try the other inf file android_apxusb.inf and see if that will install. If you have already then I am lost.
Are you on windows 8? If so please see the topic Windows 8 at the bottom of the first post.

I'll do some research and reply on the other thread. Adb is working if you get your serial number with adb devices, adb kill-server, etc.
In windows drivers have to be installed to get anything from your tablet with adb. Drivers are not needed for Linux and Mac but are required for windows.
Before I forget to mention later you need to run cmd as administrator in windows to use adb but since you fail with a terminal on the unit it may be a structure issue with the command.
how do I start ADB?

[GUIDE] Install Windows ADB Drivers for Fire HDs ("Newbie Friendly")

➜ No big ol’ SDK ➜ Latest Google drivers ➜ No messing with inf files ➜ ADB from any location ➜ Drag and drop files
Figured XDA needed a couple more ADB driver guides, so I'm bringing these down from Google drive where they've been getting a lot of use--with no complaints so far. :fingers-crossed:
Follow the steps below to install the Google ADB driver for "normal" (OS) mode.
Follow post #2 to install the driver for sideload mode. You must do this to sideload OS .bin files via stock recovery.
See post #3 for basic info/tips for using the command window and entering adb commands.
[EDIT September 21, 2015] If you're running Windows 10, read this:
At step 3 you install 15 Second ADB Installer. Some Win 10 users are reporting a problem. Please do this to help track it down:
- Be sure to run as Administrator.
- If you get an error, post the exact error and when it happens. Do not rerun Installer until someone replies to post.
- If you do not get an error, please post and say so and tell what type of Win 10 you have (home, pro, enterprise, etc.)
Thanks!
Install ADB Driver for "Normal" (OS) Mode
This uses @Snoop05's 15-Seconds ADB Installer. It provides the driver and software you need and puts the path to adb.exe into your PATH variable so you can run ADB commands from any folder.
Before you begin:
(1) Turn off anti-virus software
(2) Disconnect other physical devices that use adb and shut down any virtual ones. This can go very smoothly if you're not running anything that uses adb, including emulators, some photo-sync software, Gatesjr debloater, etc.
1. Make sure adb debugging is enabled on the the device. (Settings->My Device->Developer Options: Debugging)
To open Developer Options: In Settings -> My Device, tap on the serial number until Developer Options appears at bottom of screen.
2. If you've never connected Fire HD to computer, connect now and read this:
a. You may see a USB debugging message on tablet, tap "Always" and "Allow."
Even if you don't see message, Windows should try to install generic MTP drivers (not ADB!). Wait until you see success or failed message.
b. Unplug/replug and wait for Windows Explorer OR for message that prompts what to do when device is connected and choose Open window to Display Files, check Always do this and then OK.
c. Disconnect..
3. If you KNOW there’s no adb driver installed for the device, go to next step.
. . . If driver might already be installed, do hidden steps.
Connect to computer, open Device Manager (instructions below) and see if a driver is listed under Android Device.
- If a driver is NOT listed, go to next step.
- If a driver IS listed, open CMD window in folder containing adb.exe and run adb devices command (step 12).
* If adb devices DOES return an ID, this driver is working and you don’t need to install a different one.
* If adb devices does NOT return an ID:
a. In Device Manager, right-click the driver and choose Uninstall.
b. Unplug the device and restart Windows.
4. Download the latest version, currently v. 1.4.3, of 15 seconds ADB Installer and run it as Administrator.
If you are not Administrator, right-click the file and choose “Run as Administrator“
Read all about 15-seconds Installer at the link.
Press Y to install ADB and Fastboot
Press Y to install ADB system-wide or N for current user onlyYou should see:
Installing ADB and Fastboot . . .
4 files(s) copied
If you see 0 files copied, post the error with your Windows version and the drive it's installed on.
Press Y to install drivers
View attachment 3455788
5. An Install Wizard will run. Look for it and install device software!
6. Connect the Fire to the computer and wait until you see it in Windows Explorer.
7. 6/3/2016 Update for Win 10: Your drivers might already be installed. Check for Allow USB Debugging on tablet. Go to step 12 and run the adb devices command.
. . . If it shows serial number and unauthorized, you need to enable USB debugging and run command again. It should then show serial number and "device." You're done!
. . .If it doesn't show serial number, continue the steps.
Win 7 and 8.1: Open Device Manager:
Win10: ? Win8: Right-click Start Button and choose Device Manager. Win7: Click Start button and type Device Man [enter]
8. Find Fire under Other Devices, right-click it, and choose Update Driver Software.
If you don't see Fire under Other Devices, disconnect/reconnect or try a different USB port, or try toggling Enable ADB in Developer Options. If nothing works, disconnect and reboot both Fire and computer and try again.

9. Press Browse my computer for driver software and then Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.

10. Find Android Device, click it and press Next.
. . . If Android Device is not listed, look here.
If you DID NOT run 15 Seconds ADB Installer, STOP, disconnect from PC and run it now.
If you DID run 15 Seconds ADB Installer:
a. Double-click Show All Devices.
b. Under Manufacturer, scroll to Google, Inc, click it and continue.
↠ If Google, Inc is not listed, the ADB drivers are not installed, they installed incorrectly or were corrupted. STOP now and follow all the steps again.
11. Select Google, Inc in left pane and then Android Composite ADB interface in right, and press Next.
If the screen you see only has the Model pane (on the right above), scroll down to Android Composite ADB.
↠ If the driver is not listed, drivers have not been installed, they installed incorrectly or were corrupted. STOP now and follow all the steps again. 12. At the warning screen, press Yes.
Driver is updated!
13. Run the adb devices command and confirm it returns a device id:
a. Open CMD window: Hold down the Shift key, right-click the desktop (or an empty space in a folder) and choose Open command window here.
b. Type: adb devices [enter]
View attachment 3467199
If you see an ID followed by “device,” the driver is installed correctly. DONE!
If you see an ID followed by “unauthorized,” look at the tablet for “Allow USB Debugging?” message and tap OK.
If debugging message disappears before you say “OK,” unplug/replug tablet to see it again.
Repeat the adb devices command and confirm it now looks like above. DONE!
If you do not see an ID, the driver may not be correctly installed or USB debugging might still be disabled on your tablet. Verify all connections and reboot tablet and PC and repeat this step. If adb devices still doesn’t return an ID, follow this guide from the beginning again.
Install ADB Driver for Sideload Mode
Windows can’t recognize the Fire in sideload mode until you install the driver for it.
Note: These steps are pretty much identical to Post #1. Refer there for illustrations.
1. Connect the tablet to the computer and put it into sideload mode, like this: Reboot to recovery, use the volume buttons to highlight “apply update from ADB,” and press power button.
To reboot to recovery:
- From CMD window, run: adb reboot recovery
or
- Manual: (a) Power off the Fire. (b) Hold the power and volume-up buttons until Amazon logo appears, then let go.
2. Open Device Manager, find KFARWI under Other Devices, right-click it and select Update Driver Software.
If you don't see KFARWI under "Other Devices," see hidden text.
When KFARWI isn't under Other Devices, first be sure you "clicked" Apply Update from ADB on tablet to get into sideload mode.
If you did, see if "Android Device" is listed at top of Device Manager with a driver under it.
If Android Device is not listed, unplug/replug the tablet and see if KFARWI shows up under Other Devices. If it does, go to step 3. If it doesn't, post the problem.
If Android Device is listed, open CMD window in folder containing adb.exe and run adb devices command
- If adb devices returns an ID, this driver is working and you don’t need to install a different one.
- If adb devices does not return an ID, in Device Manager, right-click the driver, select Update Driver Software and go to Step 4.
3. Press Browse my computer for driver software and then Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
[See “Select your device’s type”]
4. Click Android Device.
[See "Select the device driver you want . . .”]
5. Select the same driver you use for “normal” OS mode (post #1, step 10) and press Next.
6. Click Yes at warning screen.
Driver is updated!
7. In CMD window, run adb devices command and confirm you see your device ID and "sideload," like this:
8. DONE! Issue the sideload command or reboot to exit sideload mode.
Note (shouldn't happen, but . . . ) If you don't get a device ID and you had a driver installed at step 2 and updated it, you'll have to uninstall the driver.
In Device Manager, right-click and uninstall the driver under Android Device.
Restart computer and reboot tablet (to get out of sideload).
Go into sideload mode, right-click KFARWI under Other Devices and see if it has Update Software option.
- If YES, update the driver.
- If NO, reboot once more and go into sideload and you'll have Update option. Update the driver.
Info and Tips for Using the Command (CMD) Window - for "Newbies"
Here's some basic info for using the CMD window and entering commands found in the guides.
Open CMD window
Hold down the shift key, right-click an empty space in an open folder (including desktop), and choose "open command window here"
Give commands on-the-fly
If you used 15-Second Installer (post #1) you can open the CMD window from any convenient location, so you can easily give adb commands "on the fly."
Example: Open CMD from desktop and run adb devices to confirm adb recognizes your Fire.
Install an app (or sideload a bin file)
Open CMD window in the folder containing the file and enter the command: adb install filename.apk
If you open CMD from a different folder, include the full path: adb install "full_path_to\filename.apk"
Format: If there are spaces in the path or filename, put quote marks ( " ) around "full_path_to\filename.apk"
Drag & drop files and copy/paste commands
To enter a long or complicated command or file name into the CMD window, use drag & drop or copy/paste.
Drag and Drop
Type: adb install <--type a space after "install"
. . . then drag and drop your file into the window. The "full_path_to\filename.apk” will be inserted at cursor.
Copy and Paste
Select the command or long file name and use CTRL-C to copy it. In CMD window, type adb install(space) as above, right-click the top bar of the window and choose Edit then Paste.
Installing drivers for sideload
Is there a discussion or a fix for installing the ADB drivers for sideload using windows 10? I'm not sure if Windows 10 is the issue, but instead of getting KFARWI in device manager, I get MT65xx android device. I've followed the instructions after step 9 several times with no luck. I've tried updated the drivers with the ones mentioned in step 3 but ADB device doesn't list a device. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you're opening Device Manager while in recovery, not sideload mode. Look at step 1 again: Reboot to recovery, use the volume buttons to highlight “apply update from ADB,” and press power button.
Once in sideload mode, you should see KFARWI.
(I edited OP to make step for getting into sideload more obvious)

Someone else encountered this with 15 Second installer. Are you running Win10? What flavor (pro, home, etc)? At what point exactly is "Access Denied" displayed with version 1.4.2?
Also, do you have folder, C:\adb or C:\users\username\adb? If yes, what files are in it?
Please let me know these things so I can try to find a fix. EDIT: @MRDirtyPixels I'll post how to update the driver when you reply. Thanks!
Fire HD 6 on 4.5.3
Win7 Ultimate x64
I'm having an issue at "Apply update from ADB". I do not have this option in recovery - only "Reboot your Fire", and "Reset to Factory Defaults".
I've had ADB drivers installed from past projects. Tried it, got this issue. Went back and installed the ADB drivers from the 15 second installer to see if that helped, still have this issue.
Also, at no point is my Fire listed under "Other Devices" - I don't even have that listed as a category. The Fire is always listed under "Android Device" > "Android Composite ADB Interface", so I figured my drivers were all set.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
**EDIT: Should I somehow remove/uninstall all ADB related drivers and software and try again?
You use sideload mode to downgrade to 4.5.3 from OS 5. (It's only an OS 5 recovery option.) Since you're on 4.5.3, presumably with OTA blocked, you don't need sideload. Sounds like your drivers set up right for OS mode. Go root!
EDIT: @jiznon Be sure OTA is blocked. Else you'll OTA update as soon as you turn on wifi to root!

Oh, great! I may have overlapped a guide or two. Thanks so much!
I managed to turn airplane mode earlier as the OTA began to download. Should be good, ya?

NO! you'll have to turn it off and use wifi to root. Run these commands:
adb shell pm block com.amazon.dcp
adb shell pm block com.amazon.otaverifier

I see. That step isn't for sometime in the guide I'm following (it also states to install sideload drivers). Maybe it should be edited.

Well, it's the step you do before turning on wifi to root. Notice that first step says that if you're on 4.5.3, get kingroot and go to step 6. So you're right there, at step 6.

Right. I'm still at "Before You Begin:
Install adb device drivers if you don't have them.
Here's an illustrated guide for Windows drivers. Install driver for both OS mode and sideload mode."
Wanted to make sure I don't miss anything. Looks like I'm on the right track. Thanks!
**EDIT: Everything went smooth. Thanks everyone!
Hi DoLooper, I'm currently following your [Root] OS 4, 5.0.n and Install Lollipop & Gapps ("Newbie Friendly") guide to root and update a Fire HD 7 and that's how I got here. I have successfully completed this guide, but only after I solved a problem that I ran into along the way. I solved it myself, so I want to share how I did it.
I had a Samsung phone before, had Samsung Kies (bringing along drivers) and "Minimal ADB and Fastboot" installed. I had removed all of these and all traces of them I could find. But when I got to step 4 of your first post in this guide, it always asked whether I wanted to install a driver with the name "Google, Inc. SAMSUNG Android Phone". I was worried the driver might be set wrongly in some way and I would brick my Fire tablet during the rooting process because of that (possible?). I continued anyway and after the driver installation finished, it didn't refer to the Fire as a Samsung device in the device manager anymore and the other steps in this guide were successful as well. So I guess I'm safe now.
However, I do have to add that when the Samsung drivers from Kies were still installed (I forgot about them at first), the device manager did refer to the Fire as a Samsung even after step 4. So I guess the moral is that you have to clean your system of other Android drivers/software thoroughly and restart first - and only then begin the procedure described in this guide.
Last but not least, thank you very much for spelling everything out step by step, it all seems like a doable task now.

This is helpful and I'd like to add it, but I'm a little confused. Step 4 is just installing the 15-second Installer software. I don't think it asks anything. Could you please clarify the step where you got that prompt? Also, when it was listed under Samsung, you were able to right-clicking and choose Update and install the google drivers, right? Thanks.
Well, at the end of step 3 the program 15 Second ADB asks "Do you want to install device drivers?" and then a windows prompt appears. This is when I got the following prompt on top of that (only have it in German, sry): imageshack.com/a/img911/8983/bBg2q0.jpg I assume it's some kind of driver, as 15 Second ADB calls it. Is it really specific to a device?
As for your second question, if I remember correctly I was able to do that (I had to dig for it like you explain in step 9 after ". . . If Android Device is not listed, look here."). But afterwards it was still displayed as a (fully installed) Samsung portable device in my device manager. No chance I would go ahead and root from there. That's when I found and removed the Samsung drivers which came with Kies, rebooted, and started the procedure from the beginning.
ADB not cooperating
Ok. I am on a Fire HD 7 Gen 4 at OS 5.1.1, and attempting to downgrade to 4.5.3 for rooting purposes. (My eventual goal is to get CyanogenMod or another 'pure android' ROM on it, if you can help with that, great) When in sideload mode, Windows doesn't detect my device at all (no KFARWI or any other 6-letter combo) but ADB can detect it in both sideload and OS mode. My problem is this: Whenever I attempt to flash a .bin stock recovery, adb stalls for about a second, while on my Fire I only see:
Now send the package you want to apply to the device with "adb sideload <filename>"
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
before the device reboots. On adb I then see: "failed to read command: connection reset by peer" Any subsequent attempts without a manual reboot into sideload mode just instantly time out. I have a feeling this has something to do with the weird reboot, but how do I prevent it?

Update the driver.

problem with the adb interface driver (install/uninstall drivers)

hi,
im having issues installing drivers for my oneplus 2 device.
here's what i've tried doing:
iv'e tried connecting the device with usb debugging and without. without usb debugging it finds the name of the device normally.
the first thing i've done is uninstall every driver that was resembled any phone, google or usb storage driver.
and tried to install the drivers from this tool: (which i think is the source of my problem i dont know how to remove this.)

it went ok with no problems, but it didn't find my device. (when i typed adb devices)
i've uninstalled the drivers again via programs and features and usbdeview tool (this time i've found older samsung device driver from regedit and removed it also).
rebooted (as every step of driver removal and install).
i've tried again with no luck.
so i've decided to install those drivers from the android sdk but when i've tried to install it from the device manager it shows up this:
i also tried downloading samsung drivers to see if it works. i saw in one of the threads that said it's ok to use them because they were universal too. (i removed it again from the regedit when i couldn't find the drivers)
i tried to use the oneplus one toolkit's for it's universal driver i thought maybe it will work
how can i fix this? i want to start over again clean. i can't find it in USBdeview or programs and features or regedit. what am i missing?
the photos are after trying to install the drivers from the sdk tool and uninstall it back with reboots several times now
+as im seeing in other threads, it supposed to be an android device and not adb interface.
+there is nothing else in the driver selection list that resembles any device
thanks to everyone who helps!
EDIT:
whatever i did i couldn't remove this marshall driver and i really don't know how i got it there. so i decided to format my pc. start over clean.
i've downloaded the sdk tools this time and before connecting my phone to the pc (maybe the windows 10 has to do anything with installing these marshall drivers.) i have installed these drivers from the sdk, rebooted the pc and connected the device. now everything works! the cmd find my device i type "adb reboot" to make sure everything works BUT when i go into fastboot mode (in order to unlock the bootloader)
the pc doesn't recognize the device. it says "android" with an question mark icon near it, ok so i just need to install the driver like in image #1 right? so i did, and it didn't show up this android adb interface driver. instead i've found this marshall driver AGAIN! i went inside it and i'm seeing marshall drivers and google inc drivers INSIDE this marshall driver selection (like image#2)
i really don't know from where this marshall london device is coming from
although setting it up as the marshall device, it works... but it's a marshall device not my oneplus 2
this doesn't make any sense to me. i never owned marshall product, beforehand i guessed it came from the toolkits i installed but this time i went clean and there's no way it came from those toolkits.
if im unclear about anytning im willing to share my teamviewer or screenshots.
this how it looks like:
EDIT2:
Q: what if i decide to ignore that marshall device? because it seems to find the device and im able to reboot from the commands. is it ok? should i ignore the name?
Hi, I used Universal ADB drivers.
I had to manually chose the .inf file with the have disk feature to make it work.
I used the Oneplus two toolbox to install my drivers.
forums.oneplus.net/threads/oneplus-2-how-to-unlock-bootloader-install-custom-recovery-root-efs-backup-more.345478
I didn't even bother with the 15 second ADB installer.
've found the problem.
apparently the drivers name was "marshall london device". i accidently clicked on it and there was an option to choose adb interface driver (like the image #2)
EDIT:
well it worked for the first try and it stopped working.
what is marshall london device? it seems to have a bunch of drivers like clockworkmod and marshall composite adb interface

i still don't get what that driver is doing in my pc
i can't install the inf file it tells me it's not supported.
for some retarded reason the usb drivers that i downloaded from google are being installed into marshall device. i don't know why but it's the second time my pc thinks my phone is a marshall device. it works if i type adb reboot, but only once. now i have to delete this marshall thingy that i don't even know how the hell it got there...
anything?
i really need help, i think i've made this problem as clear as possible.
Bump! same problem. This all happened as soon as i installed the latest version of OS. Oxygen 2.1 . Adb worked perfectly before i flashed this new OS. now windows wont read the devices with adb drivers. it keeps saying Marshall London Device.. sigh.. anybody? i tried all the same things in this thread to fix it. I also wiped all drivers using USBDeview and reinstalled to no avail.

before that what did it detect? the device name? or adb interface?
are you running windows 10?
i managed to ignore the name of the driver because like the third image i posted says that inside the marshall driver there is "google inc" and then that the adb driver...
so i think it's windows 10 that's causing this. but i've tried ignoring it and adb commands are working for me. i don't know whether it's safe to unlock and such but i managed to make it reboot into recovery...
I am running windows 10. I tried another computer of mine with windows 7 which worked perfectly before the new OS update. That computer as well cannot detect any ADB devices. I managed to get windows to install the proper ADB Android drivers in windows 10 and 7 now. However, whenever I load One plus 2 into Fastboot Mode windows DOES detect the device but ADB wont connect to it.
I have made sure that i am in debugging mode and that I authorized the connection when prompted. any ideas?
Thank you

Figured out why adb wouldnt connect. Even though usb debugging was on and permissions granted for some reason the Developer Mode toggle was hidden again. I enabled the toggle again, turned off usb debugging mode. Turned it back on 10 seconds later and it all works now. *sigh*

Thanks! Worked for me too!
Hi there,
my problem is very similar to this.
Suddenly all my android devices (OPO and OP2) are recognized as marshall london devices.
adb devices finds them but I am not able to get the authorization of my PC showing up on my phones.
adb tells me the device is not authorized.
I tried resetting the usb authorization from the development options, changing usb ports, changing cables, disabling and enabling of usb debugging, mtp mode and such.
Nothing works so far. The google adb drivers show up under the marshall london category like in the first post. It all startet after I rebooted the OP2 in fastboot once.
Any ideas?
Thanks
-howgie
Update:
I was able to get rid of the marshall london entry by removing it from the registry manually. But the problem of the unauthorized device remains...
I am also getting this error, I was able to select google devices before and had adb working but after it unlocked the bootloader and rebooted the phone it wasn't detecting anything correctly, just the marshal london device and adb doesn't detect anything, also on windows 10. Will try tomorrow on my windows 7 work machine.
Same Problem! Please Help!
For some reason "Marshall London Device>Marshall London Bootloader Interface" keeps installing itself every-time I hit Scan for hardware changes, after trying to uninstall it. ADB doesn't recognize my OPT even when my phone is in fastboot mode. Running Windows10
In windows 10 use manual choose driver from list, then choose proper driver.... If you can't find it I'll post screens tomorrow

I have same problems. Have someone found a solution for this?
I deleted all drivers and it says unknown USB device (Device Descriptor Request Failed). I can't get it to install Oneplus2 drivers, Android ADB or Samsung drivers and be recognised.
Again I concur and think this is a Windows 10 issue, I am not using the official cable, are others using it and having the same issue??
I used a different cable and it worked, strange as I tried one unofficial and one official and in the end my new Anker one I just purchased worked okay.
