I'm just in awe with this screen. Now with EVO comparison pics! - Nexus S General

I can't believe how fantastic it looks compared to LCD. I'm a huge fan of saturated colors (I crank up digital vibrance on my computer), and now my EVO's LCD just looks washed out. Anyone else who switched from LCD to this?

I wouldn't say 'switched' so much, as my Droid is still my main phone, but yes; the screen is so much more beautiful and vibrant than my Droid's LCD. When my Verizon contract is up, SAMOLED will definitely be a requirement for my new phone.

I came from an N1 which had a nice AMOLED but the NS screen is soo much more vibrant. and the blacks are so....soo...black

^ When there's black on the screen, it's hard to tell where the screen stops and the casing begins! And when the phone is turned off, it just looks like one sexy slab of obsidian.
I ended up taking back my MT4G because I couldn't stand the washed out colors on the screen. The G2's SLCD was fantastic, but the SAMOLED on this absolutely blow it out of the water.

That's one of the coolest features, in my opinion. I didn't think I'd like the black notification bar after using CyanogenMod for so long, but it just looks like part of the phone!

Pure sex. Umf.

IT'S TOOOO DAMN BRIGHT!
Screen is great, but it's too bright! Was at TRON Legacy midnight showing last night, after the movie, the lights were still down, I turn on my phone and blinded myself! Even manually set to 0% it's way too bright. Makes it hard to use the phone at night when you're laying in bed reading the news.

Heh, you should rip an Avatar DVD and watch it on the SAMOLED. T-Mobile knew what it was doing when it packaged the movie with the Vibrant, because it's an absolutely jaw-dropping combo. My iPhone 4-owning friends are just blown away when I show them movies on my Vibrant.

I lick my super amoled when I am in the bathroom and no one can see me.

Coming from MT4G ( and the inferior screen too ) It's really a big difference.

Try an app called Screen Filter! Put it at halfway, solved my TOO BRIGHT issues in darkness.

i heard that if you go outside in the sun every once in a while it fixes the "OMG it hurts my eyes issues"

Nexus S super amoled display Vs Vibrant

I have both the Nexus S and a Vibrant. I must say that the Nexus S super amoled display looks better then the Vibrant super amoled display and, it's not the brightness. I turned the Nexus S screen to the lowest setting and, I turned the Vibrant to the highest setting as a result the Nexus S screen looks alot better. What's you all thoughts on this?...please don't say that the vibrant is a defective product because, this will be my 4'th Vibrant do to this...thanks.

Every SAMOLED screen has its own characteristics, there are no two SAMOLED screens that are identical, they just have to fall between an upper and lower specification

I think that a newer display should come with a change log...lol but, trust me the Nexus S display is indeed a different better screen. I thought that a LCD was a LCD Super Amoled was a Super Amoled, just a different resolution and, size. It would be nice to let a customer know what they are buying. Thanks.

Really, looking at both displays and back of the boxes checking to see if both are super amoled displays drove me crazy, I knew it was't my eyes. Sucks my Vibrant SUCK!

I've noticed this as well... that is of you didn't get one with the ugly yellow/grey tint screen. I'm on my 6th sns and this one has the best amoled screen I've ever seen. I went through a few vibrants and ended up with a pretty nice one there too but there's no comparison with the particular nexus s. It even looks better than my buddy's fascinate which has a better screen than any vibrant I've seen or owned. Whites on this phone are awesome and very neutral with barely any tint at all. Even at its lowest brightness setting I don't have any purple or pink on the status bar pull down. Even on my phones that didn't have this exact quality screen still were great looking amoleds.

I had 3 NS prior to the one I have now. The first one had a piss yellow screen, the second one had a off purple hue and the third had wifi issues....
The forth one is perfect in every way

I switched from the Sprint Epic to the Nexus S and i have to agree, my epics screen just didn't look as good as the nexus one did. On the epic i would normally set the brightness to halfway and it looked decent but on my nexus i leave it on auto and regardless of where i am it looks amazing. I don't know why but it does look better
So I take it, Super Amoled's are not all the same. I think they don't tell us this because of business reasons. Besides, I think it would be cool to know the name of my Nexus S screen cause I know for a fact the Nexus S has the best Amoled display out there.

My guess is that they use the same basic technology but given the time between release dates some new parts or processes may have gone into the making of the Nexus S screens. The Nexus S definitely has a Super Active-Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (SAMOLED) but just looks slightly better. Heck it might even be due to the Contour Display (as it is called), who knows?

My Vibrant's screen looks a million times better than my Nexus. I'm on my second Nexus, both of them were bad, and so was the demo in the store. I'd rather have the blue tinge on the Vibrant over either screen I have seen on the Nexus.

its funny when it comes to screen on the nexus S, we find almost the same people replying " including me "
i think we reached a points where we are the " experts " of the screens now.

I've been talking to supercurio about the screen issues, he says that they are fixable and that the contrast and gamma settings aren't correct. This totally makes sense to me, but I'm waiting to hear back on whether it will be included in his program or if this is a setting somewhere where I can adjust it.

super amoled display dwarfs every non amoled display existing.

People may say that out super amoled display is getting old and everything, but its only getting old compared to the super + varients and hd amoleds. so far i have not seen a smart phone capable of my vibrants supreme colors and deep blacks. dont forget viewing angles. my cuzzin was all happy cuz she got a htc vivid n thought the screen was better than mine cuz it was bigger lol. then i showed her mine next to hers and she was like wtf? it doesnt look as white or bright lol. gosh, im never getting rid of the vibrant till the hd plus varients come out. forget lcd. its just outdated and a waste of time. nokia and samsung know that
HTC has used amoled before I don't see why they don't continue and Motorola has used it Led Tech is simple better plane an simple

The only thing I never liked was with the stock rom/kernel from when I first got my vibrant is missed calls and texts kept the screen lit, especially overnight, which in turn kind of burnt the notification bar and clock slightly into the screen that I notice on a white screen  no fix for that I assume?

Yup, over the holidays my aunt hade a point to mention how ..er.. vibrant my screen was. Her adult sons have smartphones so it's not like she's never seen one before, but mine stood out.
Then again, maybe it was because I was letting my niece watch Spongebob.
Lol. you know idk why people over exagerate saying that our screens are not "sharp" seems pretty sharp to me. its a nice trade of for having everything else superior
Our screen does kinda suck compared to other phones... But i've noticed my screen seems to be the most durable. I've stepped on my phone a couple times, it dropped then i get out of the car and crack.... I even stepped on it one time with a rock on the side and the screen doesn't have a single scratch..
Thats about all I can say I like.

Older phones like the HTC HD2 couldn't match our phones AMOLED display, but when your talking about the new Galaxy S2, or even a phone like the HTC Amaze both have fascinating displays.
I've compared them side by side and i personally think our phones have more of a yellowish tint that isn't so great.

It's just something about this offset yellowish tint. The whites never seen pure, although i'll give it the black is definantly more black than an LCD.

[Q] Blackness of LCD?

I was reading TechRadar's review while waiting for my N4 to be delivered. They made a lot of big promises on the LCD's ability to show black. Here are the highlights so you don't have to read the whole thing:
"When you're looking at icons on a black background (like in the app drawer), you can't even see the black, if that makes sense. It is so deep, that icons just float."

"The screen is invisible when off – but when it lights up, you're treated to 4.7-inches of True HD IPS Plus beauty."

"It is razor sharp – blowing Retina out of the water and we'll venture it is one of the best we've seen on a handset."

This put my expectations high. Upon actually receiving my N4, it was underwhelming. I can see the black, I'll say the LCD does black well, but not as well as the review states. My LCD is also not invisible when off. I can look at the front of the phone at almost any angle and be able to tell you where the edges of the screen are when it's off. Lastly, (this is mostly opinion) I think that while this screen is comparable to Retina, it doesn't "blow it out of the water."
What are your experiences with the N4's screen? It would seem either TechRadar was stretching the truth, or LG started shipping newer phones with cheaper LCDs inside. Thoughts?

The blacks are pretty deep for me after calibrating with an oled.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I'm very impressed by the display personally. Yes, I can distinguish between the screen and the bezel but I honestly don't care. Colours are surprisingly on par with the SGS3 but not as oversaturated, and whites are more white than the SGS3. The sharpness of the display is great as well. Overall, pretty awesome.
What gets me the most is the off angle blacks, they are horrible, unless you look at the phone perfectly perpendicular to the sides and tops then the blacks invert and become bright gray, even a slight change in viewing angle causes major degradation, its almost as bad as a TN display. Like all LCD's the blacks look great in a bright room, its when it gets dark that it turns to crap.

LCD panel too close to digitizer?

anyone else noticing that LCD liquid effect from simple touches of the screen? started noticing it when i had the TPU case, and if i kinda bumped the edges, i'd see that liquid effect (like when you push on an LCD monitor or TV or something)
then i started realizing that even w/o the case, it does it all over the screen. you don't even have to be pressing hard and you start to see that liquid effect already.
obviously AMOLED doesn't tend to have these issues (i guess bc of how their screen is made, the glass seems MUCH harder, like on the GS3/4) because comparing an AMOLED panel with glass to an LCD, you can even feel a difference...from my expeirence with LCD (rezound, DNA, G2) the glass flexes much more which can cause that liquid movement...whereas with amoled (nexus, Gs3, GS4) the glass doesn't flex at all so it doesn't produce that effect.
i'm only worried bc recently i've been noticing that without much pressure, it's still starting to do it. is it that the LCD is way too close to the digitzer that this is happening, or what?
i've noticed it on my co-workers G2 as well, and i've seen some posts about it here, but i'm curious as to the consensus.

exactly. yeah, glad to know it wasn't just mine. the TPU from verizon was pretty damn tight, so it hugged those bezels and i guess that's what made it flex more.

I have the diztronic case on and the LCD panel doesn't have the liquid effect. As for amoled, I've never had a good experience with it. On the S2 and S3 I had those black spots that can be common on amoled panels. I then got some slight screen burn in the S3. I didn't have these two issues on the S4 but it did have the scrolling blur problem with dark backgrounds.
Don't have this issue yet with the D803(Canada). Maybe its only a VZW issue....?

Lol, I have adjusted quite well and don't think that it's a massive difference compared to the G2. Sure it's bigger, but not night and day.
And I actually missed amoled. I don't do graphic design on my phone so I actually appreciate the crazy pop of the colors and the deep blacks. And this screen doesn't have those annoying dots all over it which was driving me crazy on the G2 in certain lighting conditions.
But the G2 is a great phone man, I totally understand you keeping it. I haven't looked back like you thought I would though lol. I absolutely love this device lol.

I know there is an always on display feature, but was wondering if still with it the new notifications texts will show on a black screen for a while like the ambient display feature in the old pixel..

Is there a way on Pixel phones to edit the nav bar buttons like on most other phones? I like the back button on the right.

Dang the new XL is sweet. It's so much better than what we see in the photos. I think they hit it out of the park with this one. Love the always on, the vibration is way better, screen is great.

We need more real world reviews on the screen from Avg Joe consumer. The screen is taking a beating online. Makes me weary. My 6p had that bluish rainbow effect viewing angle issue.
Can you comment more on how the display looks to you personally? So far the reviews are not good.

Screen looks great to me. I have it about 50%brightness. Even from angles I don't see what the issue is.
Very nice design but.. Screen looks dull as f..
Not just dull but inaccurate.

Don't think that would work anyway.

Actually colors are more accurate than any other OLED screen out there. They’re not over saturated like the galaxy phones

I don't believe so without root.

So far the screen is fine. I'm not the right guy to ask about screen this or that so I would defer to the big screen thread. The only thing I do notice is a blue tint when you tilt the screen 20 plus degrees like a lot of the other people have stated but it doesn't really bother me as I almost always look at the screen straight on
In the unboxing videos I've seen, I haven't seen the tool for removing the sim card tray.
Is there one included? I'm not sure I have mine still from my 6P. I'm sure I can use something else, but it would be nice if the new phone came with one.
Thanks in advance.
Edit: so funny. Not 60 seconds after typing this, I click on an unboxing video and the first thing shown is the sim card ejector, which is in with the manual packaging.
Oh well, I hope I get this bad boy soon. My ship date is scheduled for the 24th and I'm hoping for sooner.
Yeah got my phone yesterday as well, screen is different to say the least but the accuracy of color is really gorgeous. Google said they will be releasing a fix for the screen to adjust it or maybe disable SRGB as it's not for everyone but the phone works great, lightning fast, and take everything I throw at it. I have substratum themes running on it now (non rooted) and still the phone works great and looks great.

Is there an option in "Developer Options" to toggle sRGB? With it enabled on my 6P, the colors do look more muted, yet more natural. I was just wondering if the picture color mode can be changed.

The funny thing is if you go to settings and search for it, it says it's there in developer options, but when you look for it, it's not there lol
