[Q] Facebook - Contacts Intergration - Streak 5 General

Could someone help with Dell Streak's Integration between Contacts and Facebook?
(For my friends with Samsung i9000, if they press and hold a contact, they have an option which say "Join Contact", through which they can integrate that particular contact with twitter/ facebook etc)

I have stock Froyo 2.2 on my Streak. If you download the facebook app from Market, upon 1st setting it up, it will give you various options to sync facebook with your contacts.

Running Stock Froyo (!2821) and I've installed Facebook and I do sync the facebook contacts with my phone contacts, however for some contacts facebook doesn't automatically pick up the images (example with different names), in that case samsung users can join contact with various accounts (fb/ twitter etc) as per the screenshot below.. (from samsung galaxy i9000)

Im glad someone brought up this very annoying issue. I love my Streak but my biggest complaint is definitely Regular Contacts/Facebook Contacts integration.
On my Samsung Galaxy S, after syncing Facebook contacts with standard contacts app there is an option to "join" my pre-existing contact with there facebook counterpart. (So i then have there phone number and facebook/twitter info combined in one contact listing, not two.)
On the Streak i cannot figure out how to do this as it says facebook contact information cannot be edited on this device.
Does anyone have a fix for this?

Go into facebook and find your friend on under the Friends option. Long press and hold on their picture then when you release it there will be a pop-up option and one of them is the picture of a contact card. Click that card and that will take you to the a contact page with their facebook info. Hit your menu button and choose edit contact then hit the menu button again and there should be an option to join contact to another.
Typically you can then join it to a contact in your contacts lists but mine isn't working under the latest 2.2 from Dell. Says no contact saved and I can't merge it with another contact. No sure why that is happening. Haven't figured it out yet.

Doesn't work for me on Steve's 1.4.6

Here is a page describing how to do it: http://www.tested.com/news/how-to-properly-merge-social-networking-contacts-on-android/1032/
problem is it isn't working on the streak in froyo. Worked just fine on my nexus one. I think this might be a bug with the Dell Froyo.....anyone know the support contact to send bug reports to at Dell?

Bug also exists for Skype contacts.
Hope someone cracks this ... 'tis very annoying having duplicates.

I don't know if you have tried this app from the market. It's called "phonebook 2.0" it's got an option of joining the contact with Facebook photos. It's free and looks better than the default one.

The issue isn't just with facebook joining of contacts its all contacts can't be merged when using 2.2 on the streak

Okay, after spending some time over the weekend, I have stumbled on a temporary solution for the contact joining issue.
What is causing the problem is when the Join button has been clicked, instead of doing a joining, it somehow got registered as adding a New Contact (which is one of the icons in the menu).
In order to correct this problem, the button mapping needs to be reset. So simply put, all we have to do is change the screen orientation.
First, hit the menu button when you are in the contact card and go to Edit. Click on menu again to bring up the Join button. DO NOT HIT JOIN YET. Instead, change your screen orientation at this time (with the Join menu showing), either from portrait to landscape or vice versa. Soon after the orientation has been changed, click on Join, and voila, choose a contact to merge to .
Since I'm not a developer, I'm not so sure if this is a easy bug for DJ_Steve to fix, but I definitely think Dell should fix this in their next update along with the Bluetooth Voice search bug. These shouldn't be that hard to fix for Dell.
Anyone has a way to get to someone in the higher position from Dell so we can show them a list of bugs needs to be fixed?

NICE JOB. Not sure how you figured that out but I managed to get it to work on my streak as well. Took me a few tries but it worked. I will pass this on to the Dell.com forums and my contact person there to see if this can't get pushed along.
UPDATE: seems you have to pull up the regular contact first and do the menu-edit-menu-change orientation-then join. You can't start with the facebook contact then merge it to the regular one has to be regular to facebook.

@Chitarrista: THANKS! Just pressing the button doesn't quite express my gratitude for finding that little workaround!

Please Help !!
Thanks, this worked for me too !!
One more problem though, I tried using applications like contapps and Phonebook 2.0, but when i try to authorize the app with facebook, it cannot connect to facebook.
Facebook app for android and web access for FB works fine, but from inside other apps I cant connect to FB to fetch Data.
-------------------------------
Update: other apps like egreetings are also not able to connect with Facebook.

Facebook sync not working - cal syncs, but not contacts

Since a couple of days I have been unable to sync the contacts with the internal facebook app.
It always says that it is currently experiencing problems and is highly annoying!
Calendar sync works though.
Anyone got the same problem? A solution?
I am running the jp3 firmware, but also reflashing to jm5 produced the same problem.

Same problem here. Been like that for a week or so now.
I switched to Phonebook 2.0 from market. Think its better than the stock app and FB sync works.
But hope they fix that FB sync thing soon. It´s getting pretty annoying.
Maybe you should use Phonebook 2.0 to find a defect friend's name. When you link your Gmail contacts to Facebook contacts in Phonebook 2.0, you may find someone who have some strange things. For me, I have some friends who have their last-name 'null' instead of the real one. So, I decide to delete these friends and then I can sync agian.
Found this at androidforums earlier in the week when I was having this problem, and it worked for me. I can't post links, apparently, but to give credit, it's from airmanjerm over there (androidforums dot com slash samsung-captivate slash 127442-link-facebook-friend-photo-contact dot html).
1. Start the CONTACTS app.
2. Click on "Contacts" at the very top.
3. Pick a person in your contacts list who is also in your Facebook friends. Select their name and it opens their entry in your phone's contacts list. For this, we'll select "John Smith." (How original!)
4. Touch the MENU button in the very bottom left of the phone.
5. Select "Link Contact"
6. At the top, select "Get Friends"
7. Select your Facebook account. (If you don't see it, you'll have to be sure your phone is logged into your Facebook account.)
8. Your phone will pull up all your friends from your FB friends list. Although you're technically only trying to link John Smith, go ahead and select all the friends you want to import to your phone altogether. (Or just select all at the top.) This will save you a couple steps later.
9. Click "Save" at the bottom.
10. After a few seconds or a minute's worth of "importing," the phone will go back a screen. Here you will see all your imported Facebook friends that you just imported. Scroll down to "John Smith" and select that Facebook profile to link it to your phonebook entry.
11. An AMAZING feature here is that when the phone imports all your friends from Facebook, it automatically links your phone contacts with their Facebook profile IF they have either the same exact name, or the same phone number or other similar contact info.
12. For those that don't automatically link, repeat steps 1-10, omitting steps 6-9 since you've already imported them from Facebook.

Just tried it.
Can't even do that. When the sync error appears FB is grayed out in get friends.
You can also try syncmypix from the market... With this its possible to link contacts pictures from facebook to your phonebook contacts.
We'll have to wait until facebook fixes this failure.

i have the same issue. can't click on get friends since facebook is greyed out in contacts.
It started working for me.
found this while searching around, well I messed up and linked some stuff wrong, and just removed the facebook account...
Well story is I just got this phone,
added facebook account for the widget that came on phone, no contact sync
later installed facebook from market
then today tried to sync contacts with failure
After I deleted the facebook account, I went to add back and noticed two options for adding facebook accounts, one that says "Intergrated contact accounts" and one under "more accounts" I tried the one under intergrated and it seems to be working without having to do any work arounds...
If anyone is getting gray facebook when doing "get friends" make sure in Settings->Accounts & Sync->Facebook that contact sync is enabled.
maybe this will help
(welcome my first post in the array of Galaxy S forums, been using androind on my old ATT Tilt and finally upgraded)

Make GMail default contact save location?

So I had an EVO before my MyTouch and when I saved a contact it went straight to my GMail account. I noticed contacts were missing from there today and was confused, I found out when I save a contact the default location is T-Mobile's sync app. I tried disabling it under accounts and sync and all I can do is turn off sync but when I add a new contact it still defaults to that account. Now I know I can change it in the little drop down but I would prefer just to have GMail as the default so that I don't forget to change it or something. Plus every time I do change it this stupid warning pops up.
Anyone know how do make GMail default? I can't find settings for it ANYWHERE!
Hi, please search next time
This has been asked and answered, here is the relevant post on how to (AT YOUR OWN RISK) completely disable T-Mobile sync: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9922041&postcount=5
Does nothing, I am fully rooted running stock ROM but when I search that and delete everything T-Mobile sync stays in my setting and when I restart all those files come back if I seach with root explorer again...
You can be "fully rooted" with permaroot, but are you S-OFF in hboot? If not, any modifications to /system will revert on any reboot.
Yes, S-Off HBOOT 0.85.2007 I used this method
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
to root and gain S-off. If it is any connection I also can't get any of the over clocking kernals/mods to work on my phone. This is a replacement MyTouch, my last ones screen shattered. But I was able to root and over clock that one, never tried this deleting T-Mobile sync till I got this replacement phone.
Just uncheck "tmobile" from the view menu in the contacts screen. Then it will automatically select Google as the default save location.

Also does nothing, at least for my phone and my stores demo MyTouch... Still defaults to T-Mobile and you can't remove the account in settings either because it says to master reset it.

Make sure you don't use faves. If you have any contacts in faves, T-mobile becomes the default save for contacts. I just froze the faves app and widget along with applying all the other suggested fixes and so far google remains my default save.
...also, delete data in contacts storage app and resync everything to google.
Swyped on my rooted MyTouch4G
Thank you!!!!!!! I just deleted anything that had to do with My Favs as well as all the nab files in root explorer and now it defaults to Google most of the time, seems like depending on who you enter the contacts menu it switches from Google to phone. If I go to contacts via the app drawer and add bee, Google is default, but if I click the phone in the launcher bar then go to add a contact it makes phone the default. Doesn't matter to me though I go through app menu most times and either way at least its not on T-Mobile. I'll use the thanks button when I get home the app doesn't have the option.

No problem. If you look at my post history, a couple weeks back I wrote a pretty detailed process on how to keep Google as your default contacts. It explains how you need to unlink (or better, delete) all contacts and basically only use Google to sync. Glad to help.

This doesn't appear to be correct. One of the first things I do when dealing with Contacts is change the 'View'. I only have one Google account and my Facebook checked for my View Contacts > View options and when adding contacts, I keep T-Mobile hidden, my other Gmail account hidden, etc. T-Mobile is still the default Contact Type.
In regard to this post...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9922041&postcount=5
...instead of actually deleting anything to do with NabService, I found that using Titanium I could freeze NabService...

This seems to have the same effect, since now I no longer have T-Mobile as a Contact Type when I go to add a new contact...
What I don't like however, is that of my 3 Contact Types - Google (Gmail #1), Google, (Gmail #2) and Phone, Phone is the default Contact Type now when adding new contacts...
Is the same true (i.e. that Phone is the default Contact Type) after deleting anything to do with Nab?
My default seems to stay google now that I changed it from phone the very first time after deleting nab and my favs. It did originally default to the phone though. Also it seems like it may depend on how you actually enter your contacts. If you go in through the Contacts app via the app drawer google is the default, if you go in via the little phone in the launcher bar it seems to make phone the default. odd?

[Q] facebook contact integration

Hi all,
Maybe I haven't enabled some setting (still new to the android game, even newer to the Timescape UI) but is there some way to search and link your phone contacts to facebook friends?
I've seen this integration being done using a built-in HTC feature.. wondering if there's something similar in Timescape that i've just missed.
Go to Contacts --> Settings --> Accounts & sync
There you can add your Facebook account

how do you guys get status updates to sync with contacts? i can get twitter updates to sync, but not facebook.
hey thanks for that guys.
@ thomassafca: yep i've done that, but what i mean is an app that runs through ur contacts, compares them to your facebook contacts and suggests whether u should merge the two.. not sure if that's what's happening atm tbh LOL but so far it doesn't look like a lot of contacts have fb details.
@androhero: thanks will give that a go, sounds promising.
haha tried life.contacts but if your contacts don't have the same name (e.g. first and last; most of my contacts in my phone are nicknames / first names only) it doesn't play too nice. would be great if you hv a clean contact list though, thanks for the heads up.
also (i'm an idiot) if you long-press a contact name in contacts it pulls up the context menu where you can select 'join contacts'. not quite what i was looking for (an automated suggestion app) but it'll do for now.

life.contacts works great, as long as the first name of the person in you contacts is exactly the same as there first name on facebook
hey! if you're still looking for a way to merge phone contacts with facebook IE their picture or status, what i did with mine was go into contacts, click on a contact and select edit. once you're in the editing screen for the contact press the menu button and at the bottom of the screen it will say join with two funny looking arrows..and then if your contact name is similar to any of your facebook contacts, it has that persons profile and you just select it!
if you know the person's on facebook and it doesn't show their name, sometimes you can edit the phone contact so it has the same name as their facebook page and join the two, then rename the contact in your phone so not every person has a first and last name lol.
hope this helps!

I second this as Life.Contacts widget/account-sync does work. However, I would just as soon have native Facebook sychronization. It works on my Thunderbolt, it works on my Moto Droid A855 (OG Droid), it works in my dev environment Android Emulator. _WHY_ Doesn't it work on the Xperia Play? Even on the "stock" Android 2.3.2 on the Verizon version (R800x). The facebook app works fine, except it has no settings under the "other settings" option inside the app, and if you try and add an account listing under your system Accounts menu, it just goes right back to the account list.
(Also, no it is not moved to SD, installed to a SD-Ext partition or anything else, just normal internal storage install directly from the Android Market)
Anybody have any ideas as to why?
Why would anyone want to put there phone numbers and personal contact data on facebook? That is just stupid. Why not just post your credit card information while your at it?

No, we are not putting phone numbers and personal contact data on facebook. It is putting facebook data on your phone.
For example. I have a friend John Doe in facebook. He is also in my phone. When he calls me, his facebook photo automatically shows up. Same for all other friends.
It's nice to see new facebook profile pictures when people call me.
I c. But there are to many people in my Facebook that I wouldn't want on my phone. A lot of them I don't even know. They just add me because we know someone in common. LOL
I had a similar problem with gmail on my iPhone all of a sudden I had everyone I ever emailed on my phone. Even people I only emailed once to buy something on kijiji.

Because your only meant to add your friends. People go crazy and add anyone they can its up to them.

That is why you just integrate the facebook info with only people from your contact list.

[A] Picasa Web Albums Sign-In Request

Ever since I updated to KitKat on my S4, Google kept asking me to sign in to allow Gallery to access Picasa Web Albums or something like that. Every time I open Gallery it would come up. Despite saying "No" and removing the notification, it just came back every time.
To remove this notification, I went into the Gallery (the stock gallery app) and hit the menu button (the capacitive button on the bottom left of the phone), went into Settings. I tapped my gmail address under "Accounts" at the top and scrolled to the bottom of that list. Once I unchecked "Sync Picasa Web Albums" the notification stopped appearing. Not sure if this was some update within KitKat or not because I never had the notification before.
Anyway, I decided to post this so anyone with the same issue who tried searching for it might find this and it will help them.
Cheers,

Thank you Live Trash, I had been having this pop up several times a day since updating. Problem solved.

Thanks a lot for saving me a bunch of time. Yeah, just reinstalling all the Google stuff defaulted to syncing with all their apps. Easy fix for an annoying issue.
awesome.....on the note 3 here, but with multiple gmail accounts, this was about to drive me effin insane, you rock man ty ty ty
One question, can I revert agreement that I did?
I installed stock KitKat firmware on my Samsung phone, added Google Account and agreed to linking Gallery app with my Google Picasa photos.
Now I want to revoke access, but there is no such options in Google account settings. I checked under apps with Google+ login - nothing there. Also clearing data of Gallery app doesn't help, cause after alowing to sync again there's no more Sign-In Request, it just syncs.
And btw I know I can remove check mark in sync setting to stop syncing my picasa to samsung gallery, but still - first time I opened Gallery, there was an access request and idk where to find revoke button in my Google account - button like for games or apps that I logged in with my Google+ account.
I'm a little bit OCD about this. Can someone help me?
Thanks
ok, I see that permission is reseted while flashing custom ROM and not using stock apps.
sign-in request

My solution was much simpler: accept the sync request.
Makes a difference "Where" you do it!!

Thanks LiveTrash!
Even though I did this from account under setup, I had to do it in the stock gallery app to resolve the issue. !!

My experience S4 (AOS 5.0.1), it would keep asking for permissions even after following same the above steps - settings menu in gallery; pick account; unchecking sync I tried several different things and did fix it but I started again, removed account so I could write up steps, in case anyone else get stuck with same issue. (This was only an extra account for use with youtube app and I don't even use it for pics and swapped using gallery to qucikpic app). These are the steps if your not intending to sync an account (generally and specifically for picasa web albums):
open notification shade (access using drag 2 fingers down from top of screen)
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Turn sync feature button off so nothing accidentally default syncs for new account.
Add your extra account (eg for me I did it in youtube but in andriod settings via noticifaction shade and navigate to "accounts" option should be equivalent)
turn off your internet access (wifi and/or mobile data whichever you have in notifications shade - also 2 finger drag) and
in same place ensure "sync" feature in on
now as you are offline navigate to accounts menu and untick anything you never want to default sync, in particular, the picasa web albums.
turn on your internet access (wifi and/or mobile data whichever you were using before in notifications shade - 2 finger drag)
open gallery app
swipe away any notification from gallery - I did not get one with this method but if you do and view it just ignore choosing "allow"/"deny" hit back physical button and dismiss notification message

WhatsApp Duplicate Contact Issue/Problem

I'm having the issue of duplicate contacts showing up in my Dialer and Messages app when I search for contacts. Upon checking I see that 1 contact is synced from my Google Account and another 1 is synced from WhatsApp.
The Google Contacts app is unable to merge them all automatically like is done on my Nexus 6p.
How do I get around solving this? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Work around is
Go to settings in app and choose Google under contacts to display
Will have to wait for update to get it fixed
Bummer, I suspected it was an issue with the ROM because I've tried close to everything I could find on the forums.
Thanks for confirming
Oh ! In frustration, I merged all the contacts that had duplicates !

A month after use, could you find a fix for this? It's making me go crazy! Even when I choose to show All Contacts, the app itself shows only one app, but if I search for a contact, it shows anything between 2-8 entries for different contacts. That inconsistency itself makes it difficult to put a finger on what is creating the issue.
Experienced this on my old Moto G Turbo when I installed AOSP extended based on Android 7.1.2 custom ROM, making me thinking this is definitely a problem with AOSP itself. Forgot what I did to fix it, but the problem doesn't exist on that phone anymore. Hope I didn't lose my **** to manually merge every contact! Can't do it again!!!!
Guys, download Google Contacts from Play Store. it will sacn for duplicate contacts and merge or Delete duplicate ones. it'll will work.

Unfortunately not, I've just learned to live with this minor annoyance. Basically I use search in the Phone app to get the contact I want - the phone app only shows the first contact in search and typically doesn't show the duplicate WhatsApp counterpart. This is the same case in Messages where using search will show just one contact instead of two.
Pretty confident it's a ROM or AOSP issue as you mentioned, because I had this issue on my Nexus 6P before on a certain AOSP ROM but it went away after switching ROMs.

Actually went through the hassle of manually linking all those duplicates that the app itself refused to recognise as copies. It's was a very frustrating experience, but not as much as seeing 8 copies of the same name popping up every time I look for someone. Did this for the second time on a phone using AOSP ROM. Hope they fix it soon.
Hey guys sorry for the irrelevant question, but does this phone have Google Phone and Google Contacts like the pixel devices?
How does this phone justify the Android One Program?

No. It is strange that they've preloaded all Google apps, including the calculator, clock and messages but have used AOSP Contacts and AOSP Dialer apps. Classic Google, can't be explained
Do you think the phone's worth the price? I'm thinking to get this but outta money. Currently on Redmi Note 4G with Resurrection Remix 7.1.1

Download and install "Twitch contact formatter". Just open the app and press on "save selected". it'll remove all the duplicate contacts from whatsapp and other applications as well....
I might have a very common workaround that seems to work perfectly!
just install LinOS contacts app and disable google contacts....boom problem solved!
I'll provide the link of the contacts app- https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/linea...0-release/phone-3-00-00-android-apk-download/

Installed it, it crashed immediately so uninstalled it.
BTW, it didn't solve the duplicate contacts, there are still duplicates found in this dialer too.
Regards
this problem only on oreo

yeah....for me it worked fine for around two days...I installed both contacts and dialer app but the apps started crashing after two days and the duplicate contacts are being created only in google contacts and dialer [oreo]!
hope Xiaomi fixes it soon!
I have successfully solved the duplicate issue by:
1. Exporting all my Google contacts(My Contacts > More... > Export...):
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
TAKE REALLY GOOD CARE OF THIS FILE!!
2. Deleting all my Google contacts(if you're not sure what you're doing, STOP now)
3. In the .csv file generated at step1. search for all mobile numbers that are not in international format & replace them with their international format using Notepad++. Example for Romania: all mobile numbers are formatted like 07xxxxxxxx, and the international format is +407xxxxxxxx:
4. Save as... the edited file as "google - edit.csv". DO NOT overwrite the original back-up, as you might need to do some trial & errors here, depending of the format of mobile numbers in your country.
5. Importing the contacts back into Google from the edited .csv file(My Contacts > More... > Import...).
6. PROFIT?!?
Now, for me, the duplicates are gone as the phone numbers in my Google Contacts literally match international phone numbers format from Whatsapp.
This issue seems to be fixed on the January security update... I no longer have any duplicate contacts.
Go here, it will solve the issue -https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a1/how-to/workaround-duplicate-contacts-t3740903
