[Q] nandroid backup files - Wildfire General

Hello
Perhaps a silly question, but are the nandroid files that are stored in the nandroid folder on the SD-card, the only files that nandroid needs to put back a back up?
I want to perform a second backup without loosing my first backup (taken just after rooting).
Thank you in advance,
Erwin

You can perform as many backups as you like

Each backup has a different name, do not overwrite the previous

Thank you both for your responses!
So I ca assume it is safe to store the nandroid backup files on my computer in order to save space on my SD-card?
Erwin

How to read Nandroid backups?

Hey all,
I recently backed up my G1 using Nandroid and wiped my phone clear. I don't want to restore to my backup, but I was curious how to open the files it creates on the SD card.
Basically, what I want to do is nab some data that Shazam saved (some song IDs) but I don't want to restore to the image. Any ideas?
Nevermind Just created a new backup of the fresh install and swapped over to the old one, got the info I needed and flashed back.

After installing Fresh ROM 1.1..

is it okay to delete the Fresh.zip file and nandroid backup folder from the phone? or just keep them in there?
You can move both files to your computer. Nandroid backup is very important. And the fresh one you can use it when you re flash your hero.

the Fresh.zip you can delete...you can always redownload it if you need it again. The Nandroid backup is, well...your backups. It's generally a good idea to keep those someplace safe in case you ever want to go back or royally screw up the phone that you have to go back (speaking from experience on this one) ^_^
Thanks you guys! I'm still with a 2bg SD Card, so space is very important for me! I'm gonna be buying a 16bg card in a few days though!
Well, you don't necessarily need to keep the nandroid backup on your phone. Just move it to your computer, and whenever you plan on modding your Hero, just transfer the nandroid backup to your phone. That way, you'll have the backup if you need it, and it won't take up any space that you're using

Nandroid

Could someone please explain what nandroid is.

Hello,
nandroid is a backup tool. It is run from recovery mode, and makes a copy of the internal memory of the phone and saves it on the SD-card. It can also backup the apps installed on the SD-card in the same manner. It is often used when flashing new roms to the phone, since it provides a means to fully restore the phone to the previous state.
Br,
Henrik
So if i did a nandroid back up on my phone it would back up everything onto my sd card and then restore it to its original state (ie nothing).

Yes, the nandroid image on the SD card is an exact copy of the relevant parts of the phones internal storage, so when doing a restore everything will be back as it were before. If, however, you have apps installed on the SD card using Froyos apps2sd (which stores the applications on the ordinary fat32 partition of the SD card) those applications is not backed up. Nandroid includes functionality for backing up apps installed on a ext partition, though.
Personally I use Titanium backup to backup applications when I'm changing ROMs.
Br,
Henrik
Does Nandroid overwite previously made backups, or will it make a new backup every time? In case of the latter, can you choose from recovery wich backup you want to restore?
(Before I flashed my Hero, I made a Nandroidbackup of the original ROM. I don't want risk loosing this backup when I make another Nandroidbackup.)
I think it overwrites, but i'm not sure.
No, it doesn't overwrite the old backups. You can choose which image to restore.

Henrik
Tanks for your reply!

[Q] Nandroid backups and files on internal storage

Hi,
Suppose I do a nandroid backup of my ROM, I want to know if files such as music, photos and such are backed up too. If I delete them/format the internal storage, and restore the nandroid (of course I'll backup the nandroid backup on the computer first ), will those files be restored too?

Nope. Check how big your Nandroid backup is..
It backs up your system settings + rom + data (messages, call logs, etc). Not your /sdcard.
