[Q] Rooting Evo - EVO 4G General

I'm about to root my Evo, the first android phone I have ever attempted to root. I have no idea what I am doing, and woud appreciate some advice. I'm planning to use unrevoked. I"m hoping you can analyze the steps I hope to make and help me through it. I'll even tell you what I want in the end
Tell me if I'm doing this correctly:
1. Install Unrevoked 3
2. Install Unrevoked Infinity
3. Find a custom rom somewhere (I just want a vanilla rom)
4. Be done?
Is this correct? Where do i find a rom btw? I can't wait to get away from sense, I want stock android now!

Moved in EVO 4G General.

try cyanogen

Simple:
http://www.thedroiddemos.com/2010/08/27/how-to-root-the-htc-evo-4g-with-froyo-2-2-video-walkthrough/
Just make sure you load a different ROM up afterwards as a stock rooted ROM isn't usually stable and will usually give you random Force Closes on different apps. I recommend Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo or Cyanogenmod 6 personally. Both are faster and very stable. There's a few Vanilla ROMS under the EVO themes section.

help rooting
I am a first time rooter, and I need simple instructions as a "how-to" guide to rooting. Can anyone walk me through step by step? Just explain it like u would to an idiot. Also, what are the benefits of rooting, and is it un-doable? Thanks!

Desire HD arrived! Now what?

Seriously, I know you guys hate noob posts, that been covered 1000x before.... but, my phone just arrived! This site is very large and scary... if someone could point me to a how to guide and a recommended rom... I would appreciate it.
Thx
THE BEST PLACE to start is: http://www.youtube.com/user/HTCShowMe
uh, thx?
I meant for rooting, custom roms etc... but thx either way.
Try this http://hemorrdroids.net/overclock-undervolt-your-desire-hd/
You can look for custom roms in the Dev section. There are other guides in there too.

First you should decide why you need to root or flash custom roms. If you find out you should also make sure that you know "how to do" steps for rooting transactions.

Sage advice, my thoughts, apply the current OTA update and see how you get on with it as stock, then when you know where you stand think about modding it, Visionary (from Paul at modaco) will attain temp root for you to expirement with and see what root will give you without risk and can apply permanent root when and if its required. Main advice is enjoy your new phone
BTW hold off applying any future OTA updates until they have been examined, as I believe the latest Incredible OTA closes off many of the current root exploits
I would play around with it first before rooting. This way you can see what you think is missing and choose the rom you want accordingly
Agreed and thanks for the concern
I got the same advice when I posted about my nexus one..... 3 days later, I rooted! Wish I read that comment about ota
first though.....
I'll hold off a cooked days as I might not keep it, having no 3g is tough, camera doesn't seem very good and the speaker sound is very tingy.... it has proved I missed Android but this might not be the phone for me

[Q] new user, perm rooted (i think.) now what??

well i followed the perm root instructions and im pretty sure im rooted.. anyway to make sure?
and also, since im new to all this i have a few questions.
first, at the end of the perm root instructions after u do all that rooting stuff it says something about recovery.. what is recovery and do i have to do that? is it recommended? and how do i go about doing that?
and also what is the best and most stable rom out now?
well thats it for now. please help and thanks!
by the way. sorry for the noob-ish questions lol
Most of the roms are in the same place. They're either based on HTC Sense and fully functioning or based on pure google AOSP code and missing a few still.
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Speedy for a list
I'm using "AwesomeRom" based on the stock htc code but with sense things removed.
Recovery is the app that runs pre-boot time that lets you choose a rom.
Steps on how to install it are in the second post here:

So in other word you want to root your phone and install a custom rom, did I get that right?
First find a thread in g1 that explains rooting process, Then go to 'G1's android development' and pick a custom rom that you would like to try, and follow the instructions give in the first post of the custom rom, good luck and happy flashing!

I would like to add, do research on the ROM before you decide which one you will flash. See which one you like the best before you install the ROM. It will be a lot easier in the long run. But of course, you can try each one to see what you like best about them. And then go with the best one (That's a long way and a lot of flashing to do).
This is from my experience (even with the research I did), I currently have a ROM that I might not keep. But it suit me for now until I do more research on what will be the best one for my use.

Rooting Phone

I am rooting my friends phone. Should I use the root that is on the first page of development? and also what is a good stable updated ROM and kernel?
the auto root guide works very well and comes with everything you need.
Rom will depend on you. Personally I use myn's warm 2.2. It's totally stable for everyday use. But, really it's up to you.
thanks a lot for the replies; I have my samsung rooted and I am very very familiar with all this stuff, just decided to do my friends phone, so never done an HTC. I will follow the root guide on page 1 of development and then do a ROM and kernel another time. I am assuming the Root will give it clockwork and all that.
for the evo i used unrevoked and it worked great. Of course ive only done 2 phones with it but never had a problem.
Ill vote for Unrevoked as well. Very easy and quick.
i like the adb way over one click helps if something goes wrong (at least you will know where it went wrong at, and roms depend on if you like asop over sense
I have used the abd way for my phone and did Unrevoked for my wife's. I have to say the Unrevoked was very easy to use. ABD is nice if you want to actually learn the details in case something goes wrong or you want advanced access to things.
I say use unrEVOked. Easy to use.
As for a stable ROM, depends if your friend wants Sense or stock Android, or something like MIUI
I say be like every other person here and use unrevoked. Then when you screw up the phone you can come and post a question in the general forum instead if the q&a forum. Then you can be completely clueless when people are trying to help you because you have no idea how adb or your phone works.

[Q] Upgrading back to Stock 2.3.4 while keeping S-Off and Rooted

Ok over the past 2 days I have searched over almost every single thread on the MY Touch 4g forums and can not seem to find a definite answer on this question:
Is there any way to take a rooted S-OFF, the Engineering HBoot & the ClockworkMod Recovery, 2.2.1 Stock build using the instructions on cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Glacier:_Full_Update_Guide and upgrade it back to the Stock t-mobile 2.3.4 build without unrooting etc?
I am not overly interested in installing cm7, although I did have a great experience with it on my t-mobile HD2 before the screen decided to stop working for the 2nd time. I actually did enjoy using the stock 2.3.4 build on the mt4g but would like to have more power over my phone (such as changing the hosts files to get rid of ads, remove bloatware apps I'm not interested in myself, etc).
All threads I have read more or less say once you downgrade, root and install clockwork recovery to install a rom of your choice, well I would like that rom to be the stock 2.3.4 build. Other threads state that in order to install the 2.3.4 build you need to install using the bootloader(which would unroot your phone) and not clockwork recovery.
If someone could please point me in the right direction to accomplish this goal you will seriously make my day/night/week/month.
If something is in the works that's great, I'm willing to wait it out. If this is a completely impossible goal so be it, I'll use CM7 mod.

Wow... Seriously... 2 days of looking and how the hell do I miss that.
Seriously thanks, but I blame the title of that thread "T-Mobile myTouch 4G GB Upgrade (Rooted & Unrooted)" Should be a Sticky and renamed to something like READ HERE TO UPGRADE TO 2.3.4 ROOT & UNROOTED
Sigh, but seriously thanks.
