Hspa vs Hspa+ - Nexus S General

I found it pretty interesting reading through Anandtechs Nexus S review when they compared speedtests in an Hspa+ zone between the Nexus S and MyTouch4g. His tests showed that the average dl/ul speeds in an Hspa+ area are virtually identical, obviously results will vary depending on your location but I think it speaks to how the technology itself works and what you can expect in real world use.

Another thing of note is that the NS doesn't suffer from any sort of "death grip."

I used HSPA on my Vibrant last summer, and believe me it's fast enough. HSPA+ is just going to kill your battery faster, I can live without it.

HSPA 7.2 down
HSPA+ 14.4

Especially when we are talking about loading webpages. When it comes to large file transfers sure the extra speed is nice, but at this point with mobile phones, if you are doing large file tranfers you are probably on wifi.

yup. I'm good with half the potential of current HSPA+ or even a third of what it will be. (22)
And i've never gotten above 2.0Mbps down on my nexus in south florida, so anything above that would be awesome.

On average I get 6 megs down and 1.3 up on my N1
It should also be noted that MB/s does not represent true data transfer speed it would be kB/s and NOT kbps

damn your lucky. even with full bars and the H symbol on the notification bar i've never seen more than 2.3/1.0. Just another reason why i don't mind that the NS doesn't have HSPA+ since it'll be 2-3 years until t-mobile gets around to getting anything above 7.2 here.
I didn't have 3G on my G1 for almost 6 months took t-mobile so long to finally add 3g to south florida.

pretty much. Miami had it about 4-5 months before the rest of south florida, and shortly after the rest of the state followed. probably gonna be the same with 4G, so i don't expect to get it here for at least a year.

i mis read the #'s lol
First... those are 3G speeds, albeit higher than most of us currently experience on T-mobile. Second, anyone can add the 4G icon if they're rooted... just replace the 3G one with the 4G one, and there you go. That being said, bbuchacher is a pretty stand up guy and a well-known dev for the G1, so that throws my entire analysis upside down.
hoping the devs can implement this into the roms

exactly what i was thinking when i saw the screen shot lol. Still faster then what most are getting now though.
Those are pretty far from 4G speeds.
That's just HSDPA+ (3.5g?)

Well if yet another Dev, Cyanogen in this case, is vouching for it...then there's not much more to say.
I don't have test code, I'm not even rooted, those are my speeds there in that screenshot.
They're probably getting HSDPA code updates to get us the max 7.2Mb/s that T-Mobile supposedly "on-lined" last year....I live in an HSDPA area and I don't get over 3.5Mb/s max so far, it would be nice to see 7Mb/s...heck, our tech specs don't even list HSDPA+, which would be nice to have...maybe thats what they are referring to, but even that is still only "3.5G".
By industry definition, "4G" is WiMax or LTE...neither of which are in our phone...
FYI, I guarantee this is not 4G and to say so is a major load of crap. I can also guarantee all it is is an ID key that tells the T-Mobile network you are a tester, and thus are not capped.
Simply put, this hack will be cut off if enough people use it since all T-Mobile has to do is change the ID Key this fakes to something else.
Kind of off topic. Isn't T-Mobile hspa+ 21mbs faster then. Wimax 4g. Even though our phones only support 7.2mbs wouldn't this still give us a speed increase?
WiMax 4G has a technical peak of 144Mbs/35Mbs, LTE is 360Mbs/80Mbs...
HSDPA actually covers a wide range of configurations that vary depending on how the hardware is built and deployed. LTE is actually considered the evolution of UMTS/HSPA-Evolved (HSPA-Evolved is the evolution of HSDPA).
The HSDPA+ 21Mbs networks being brought up are category 14, the 7.2's are category 8, and the "general" 3G HSDPA networks are category 6.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSDPA
LTE is supposed to provide a final convergence of UTMS and EV-DO, though we'll still have a multi-standard market because of WiMax.
There's a lot of easy info out there to read about it all...

Thanks. Didn't wanna look it up while at work. Eyes hurt if I read to much on my nexus lol

what are your speeds?

ok, so like many of you i've had the phone since the 15th and unlike some of you, i like it. lol it's actually my 1st android smartphone. i think it's decently fast, and according to the specs, it's supposed to be. i was just curious what people's speeds were.
i live in chicago and am gettin on average .65 mbps download and .55 mbps upload. are these good numbers? now when i'm on my wireless i've gotten 9.58 mbps download and 3.00 mbps upload. which is obviously way better but just on tmo's 3g, are those good??? i cant wait for HSPA numbers here in chicago but it's not here yet. :/ anyways, what kinda numbers are you guys gettin? thanks...
I get close to 3mb dl and 1.5ul when I'm at work at the port of l.a. and around .45 dl and .75 ul when I'm at home in long beach, ca. on my wireless I get around 14.9mb dl and 3.5mb ul on verizon fios.
Sent from Samsung Vibrant using XDA App
I average about 1mb downloads and .6 uploads. Most ive seen was about 1.4 mb
2.2 Mb Down 1.2Mb Up in New York City.
It's in my sig.
so are my 3g speeds ok? lol i mean i dont really notice it bein that slow like some others complain but bein my 1st andriod phone, i'm not really sure what kinda speeds i'm supposed to get. i'm assuming regardless of you being on tmo, the 3g speeds still vary from city to city or region to region rite?
They're not HSPA+ but they are normal for the regular 3G network.

I thought that 600k was really slow thats because I was using a G1, with the Vibrant 600k is plenty fast for what I use it for.

HSPA+.....

Just got a text from T-Mobile saying HSPA+ is active in my city....Memphis, TN. Havent noticed in difference. Maybe I should do a speed test later.
maybe you need an actual HSPA+ phone.
and maybe they had activated it before they announced it
hspa+ is still faster than the 3g you prob had, so now you might get up to 7.2mbps.. so you could notice a difference even though we dont have hspa enable devices... this is the first time that we can recieve more data than the phone can handle...

yeah i thought about that too. I have an upgrade so I am gonna get the G2 when it comes out. But i still wanna do some test with normal 3g versus HSPA+
Not sure if this is related but when i go to settings and about and signals its showing that im connected to umts (3g) but when i tether to my vibrant it goes to hspda (3.5g).
3g falling in the range of less than 7.2 around 3-4mbps and 3.5g around 5-7. Ive done a speed test.
speedtest.net /result /927922215.png
Im not sure if thats accurate info on the connection type. I also know speedtest sites are never accurate on speeds. Someone let me know.
All I care about is that hsdpa gets me down speeds rivaling my cable connection and up speeds beating my cable connection. 5.5/1
6? Don't need more.
Unless I am at home where tmo never gives me much signal love

I live in an HSPA+ city, and I haven't logged above 1.35mbps on the old speed test (usually far less -- around .5). Is that just the way the cookie crumbles (signal strength, etc.) or is that freakishly slow? (Going by the numbers cited in this thread, it sure sounds slow...)

Looks like the HSPA+ network to me. You didn't notice anything because you we're already on it. They only announce it after it has a good amount of coverage over the existing HSPA/3G network. It actually starts to come online far before they announce it. I noticed HSPA+ 2 months before they said it was live (outside of the strip where it was turned on during CES or CTIA)

reason i asked, mine has shown the "H" icon where the 3G icon usually is, but only "blue moon" events and maybe for a few hours duration when it does (according to Tmo's map, i'm in a "moderate" coverage area, and in a shallow valley in that area)

Man LTE is sooooo amazing. But the uploading being 22 is f**king awesome!
just thought I would clear this up, The high uploads are due to the speedtest app not being able to measure LTE uploading correctly.

Oh that makes sense. But I get those download speeds on my Moto Atrix!
Is anyone else having a problem with their atrix switching to Edge? I'll try to run a speed test or watch a video and it will just randomly switch to edge, then no signal, then back to H. What's the deal?
That was the point of this post. Most atrixes (Atrices?) are faster than this. Mine gets 5 down
Intersting results - mine were much different in Phoenix AZ.
I think in general the speedtest app is broken. When doing it on the webpage I was getting more consistantly between 15-20 MBps download and 5 MB upload.
I am actually giving back my atrix tomorrow. Best phone I have ever had, but the network is not even 3g speed out here (even with a microcell in my house I still can not get over 1.5 MB download and we all know about the stellar upload speed)

LTE uses a single channel(SC)-FDMA while WiMax still uses OFDMA for their respective uplink signaling. OFDMA is what 3G uses, hence why you can still get an accurate reading on the Evo.

HSPA+ Improvement

I know that the Atrix will not be compatible with AT&T LTE. When comparing Verizon's LTE with ATT's HSPA+, Verizon blows it out of the water. While I know that HSPA+ will never be as fast as LTE, does anyone know if there are plans to improve the speed of HSPA+ on ATT? I think it's able to perform speeds of 14 mpbs but the reports I have seen actually put it at 2-4 mbps.
Thanks,
Matt

They could very easily increase our speed, but the real question is "will they?".
It might be they are going to keep HSPA+ where it is because the network won't handle the volume of traffic, or might be because they want people to jump on LTE when they start that, (enthusiasts buying new LTE phones so they can utilize the faster speeds). in reality, we don't know, but can hope!
AT&T is slowly improving backhaul from what I hear. This should increase it pretty significantly, as T-Mobile is making similar improvements and seeing speeds in the 5+ mbps range. The most I've seen is 4.7 Mbps on my Atrix (up from 1.5 on my old Aria), so I know that the phone is capable of pretty significant speeds. The HSPA+ 14.4 radio on the Atrix is likely to top out at around 7-10 mbps once all the network improvements have been finished.
Most of the towers are fast enough already but they get bogged down easily by many more people using it than it can handle, when they increase bandwidth you'll see improvements

I almost broke 7 Mbps down this morning. Upload is a steady and consistent 1.2 Mbps.
I get 3.5 down and 1 up... I have no 4g here, at least that's what it says in about phone.
SIGH.

Appologies for my ignorance, but what app are you using to measure speed?

Speedtest, pretty much the standard we all use:
Speedtest Mobile
If you use it, make sure to check settings and select the server closest to you. Speedtest can have a habit of picking a very distant server for you. Also, it sometimes pays to try different servers, as speed results will vary depending on the server and who runs it.

Just as a recommendation, if you get consistently varied results on the Speedtest app you can try different servers but also try http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/. It seems to give me far more consistent results, but I'm not sure about anyone else. The desktop page should load fine with that strong Flash support!
Yup, Speakeasy is another good one!
