New idea for Angry Bird? - Nexus One General

Look at this article over on Gizmodo:
http://gizmodo.com/5713238/the-army-wants-to-give-smartphones-to-every-soldier
Soldiers are getting smartphones which include iPhone or Android phones. Maybe this could inspire Rovio to create another version of Angry Birds. But seriously though I think the devs should make a game (this game has been made on computer before) that users can play online against each other. Users can choose either to be pigs or birds, they can equip their characters by buying from the store. Where the money to buy all those equipment is when you get Exp from winning a battle or killing the birds in campaign mode.
Idk about choosing a pig would be a good idea since pigs are pretty heavy, they must have rockets shuffed into the back in order to fly like birds.
Mod, if you feel that this thread has nothing to do with anything. feel free to move it.

Hahaha that's bad-ass!
Remember Worms?
I'm thinking something like that.
But the pigs have no weapons, just shelter

Worms is definitely one of the best games ever made.

Worms, tanks... there are lots of 2 player games that are similar.

Bring back Scorched Earth

oh man I want a "ruggedized" Android device!!!!!! That sounds like military grade build quality to me!!!

Yeah worm was a great game. I used to play a game that had like multi player not just 2 people though. It played exactly like angry birds. Man that would be awesome of rovio make a game like that with birds flying around instead of bullets. But I like the idea of unbeatable android phone that can be placed as a bomb when activate an app lol

Upgrading our android market and games for good

Hi guys
I'be been downloading tons of apps since I got my HTC evo last month, and what I see on the market place is pretty much the same thing every day... there is not much new stuff that can really catch your eyes. The only thing that may do are the sexual wallpaper apps that kids can get access to easily. In my point of view, those kind of apps should be removed from the market.
Talking about game apps in the market, most of them have crappy graphics and the ones that have good or great graphics are the ones brought from the Apple app store.
I would like to tell you guys who develop games to really put all your effort and come up with kicking ass games with graphics that would pop out our eyes because that's what people like me are looking for and are willing to pay for.
It's not cool to have outstanding phones capable of pretty much everything and running apps with crappy graphics and stupid sexual apps that can ruin our children's life and even the great image of Android.

Thank you for that astounding vision. Your cutting insight will hopefully make Android (and the world) a better place.
While you're at it, are you taking applications for your new communist state?
On a more serious note, if a policed marketplace and fluffy flashy games are your preference over functional but Spartan apps, perhaps you bought the wrong phone. The Jesus phone is what you describe.
Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable placing my kids on the internet without some sort of firewall to buffer. A good parent wouldn't trust a corporation to do his/her own job. I wouldn't trust even the holy Job's judgement as even he sometimes lapses, not to mention that apps are not the only way that Satan may spread his seed.

I agree maybe the guy should buy an iphone and let apple run his life. That's the point with android buddy its an open market so you can make your own choices. Google doesn't control us like apple does. Its your job as a parent to police your children, not googles.

So much for a constructive dialogue, you guys take 1 of his 4 paragraphs and flame him for it, nice.
To each to his own on the sexual stuff in the market. Anyhow, what you are saying has been discussed quite a bit on this site and a lot of it comes down to a couple key pieces.
To sum it up:
1. IPhone has a standard arch that hasn't changed all that drastically which allows developers to code for one type of phone instead of several like on Android. It is more or so tweak s between IOS versions that overhaul like between an incredible vs a evo vs a Droid x.
2. Bigger end user community on iPhone.
3. More money developing for iphone than Android.
We are getting more apps and developers as we get more Android phones out on the market but it will still take time before we have a market place that has the quality of games and apps that iphone has but I am looking forward to it. I also signed up for the Android developer tool yesterday so that should be cool.

Am I missing something? Also I didn't flame, just provided a sarcastic counterpoint and even honest advice for OP. If fancy graphics and sex-free market place are important to you, then right now, iPhone is clearly the place to be.
As far as graphics go: It's pretty clear to me that the difference in games is due to marketing. Apple hyped their phone, did a great job marketing, and as such they got big attention from developers like EA. You get a big market, of course EA is going to want to make games for you. And of course, EA is going to have the manpower / resources necessary to make big full feature graphical games. I guarantee you EA and other companies making graphical masterpieces will come to Android as Android Market sales expand.

GPU Power for Fascinate Overated because...

Whats the point of this super powerfull GPU when there are absolutely noooooooo games or applications that take advantage of it. NO GAMES for android what so ever!!!!!
Im honestly starting to think android is snot! Anyone else thinking about making a change to Windows Phone 7???
I'll think about WP7 when there are actual devices coming to Verizon, but I have seen no indication that they are going to be any better off on games. Just because they tout XBox Live being built in does not mean they have anything down the road.

OP, I figure that once you learn how to type, spell, & understand good forum etiquette; you'll actually get a clue that Android is too "geeky" for you. There are plenty of games & many more to come as the platform & hardware mature but you're stuck with making a troll thread that serves no one here.
I think your thinking is backwards. Its this kinda leap in gpu that finally encourages devs to make more graphically heavy games. Why would they design something for a phone that cant run it well.
With all these new smartphones pushing out amazing cpu and gpu's im sure that we will see some major game companies step up to the bat and start designing for android .. just like they did with iphone once it could support it.
Also remember for many people android is the new baby, just became popular a couple years ago. And look at what has been done. I have owned many windows smartphones that have hads YEARS more time to dev and ive seen way less come out of them.
So yeah, go ahead and switch but i bet in 6-8 months you will be regretting it!
First off...Android phones Ive had.....Moto Droid, Htc Eris, Nexus One, Htc Incredible, Droid X...and now Fascinate.....So please dont tell me what Android is.
And Angry Birds is the simplest game in the world. Yes its fun to pass time....but any Android Phone can run it!!!! ANY!
Im not *****ing and moaning.... well maybe I am just a bit. But come on guys read the post....I said the GPU is overrated because there is nothing that takes advantage of it.....and the wait for OS Updates is ridiculous ....You all know this to be true!!!
Fragmentation is a *****!!
There will be no games or apps built specific for android that will not be built for Iphone....there all ports!!!!!! So please explain the point of the of a stonger GPU than Iphone? Hardware acceleration aside......Opera Browser might be the exception!!
Well a good gpu isn't just for games. It makes for a better browsing experience, better framerates with live wallpapers.
Also I'd like to add that if you bought an Android phone with the slightest amount of research involved you would have known that it isn't a great gaming platform. If games were any priority, you wouldn't have bought an android phone.
Troll harder next time.

I linked you to games.
Quite whining about fragmentation. That's just a buzz word people like to use instead of the real reason for not creating a product.
So what if there are no games built specifically for Android? Your point would be what? The fact remains that there are games for Android even if your not happy with them.
You could always move to the iPhone. Maybe that would make you feel better.
No games take advantage of the GPU.
Thats funny.
I've been checking out the psx emulator lately. It runs extremely smooth on this phone. And there are like 700 games to download for free in the rom buddy app. I'm pretty sure that takes advantage of the bad ass gpu. There are also emulators for several other classic game systems. I grew up playing that stuff, so it's pretty fun to go back to.
And sure we're waiting for froyo, but I don't mind the wait. Fragmentation is only a ***** to those too whiny and impatient to wait for a minimal upgrade. If you're not happy with thee phone now, froyo probably isn't going to be the miracle to change your mind.
Just suck it up and go buy your iPhone... Like all the other dumb girls that roam Jobs' pastures.

An observation and an opinion on the state of Android

Well, I was sitting at my desk and opened iTunes to start a song and the app store popped up, a list of games caught my eye(Real Racing 2,Battelfield Bad Company, Chaos Rings) so I clicked on the games tab....first, I have never even looked at the app store before now....I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY THE LIBRARY OF GAMES, really has anyone ever looked at what is available for iCrap users!?
To be honest I am considering grabbing a 4th gen ipod touch(if I can get one cheap enough) just to play some decent mobile games, it is just crazy that these companies(ALOT of the developers also develop on Android) havent released these titles for Android, I am a little peeved that we don't have some of these titles, I mean if the an iphone 3 can play Madden/Chaos Rings/Tomb Raider then our Evos are more than capable of running them. Well, I haven't gone on a rant on here in a while so I guess I'm done now, but seriously.....THESE COMPANIES NEED TO PULL THEIR HEADS OUT OF THEIR COLLECTIVE ASS, ANDROID HOLDS SOMETHING LIKE A 48% SHARE OF "SMARTPHONES" IN THE USA RIGHT NOW, IF THEY WANT MY MONEY THEN ITS TIME TO COME AND PLAY WITH GOOD OL' ANDY THE ANDROID
There, now I'm done
honestly its not just heads in asses and (sure i'm gonna get haters for this) but the apple market pays better than the android market. Android users just don't pay up like apple users. Are we cheap? Maybe but thats one of the main reasons why development is slow another reason is Android is a baby platform just barely learning to crawl although lately its been running. theres also that issue with the fragmentation on android games. don't get let down because Google has been damn good at taking on problems and the developers for android are rapidly increasing. keep your head up things will change soon enough.
and how much longer has the app store been around? Give it some time, Android will catch up. I know we live in a world of now now now, but think about where the android market was even 1 year ago.
it may just be me (don't yell at me, just my observation)
my 2nd gen ipod plays games way better than my Evo. i agree we need more quality games on android but it won't happen until the hardware improves.
the chip in my Shift seems to do ok, and with the new dual core phones coming it will only get better. i think once the number of devices out in the wild are capable of playing them, the developers will start writing more games for the platform.
one advantage to the iphone/ipod i guess is you know when you develop for one it will run on all of them (3rd gen up of course, which most people have) where as android is (i hate to use this term, again, don't yell at me) fragmented (hardware wise) some phones are just flat out not capable of gaming, and they know if they release games into the market, there will be people who don't read the requirments and then flip out when it doesn't run on their first gen G1.

Yeah I definitely agree with this. Actually I agree with the OP as well... I came from an iPhone awhile back when the original moto droid came out. I love Android because of how open it is... but the Apps suck. Everyone goes on and on about how many more apps there are for Android, and how most of them are free... but they SUCK... for the most part. I think Angry Birds being released on the Android platform was a huuuuuge step in the right direction though. Seriously... besides Angry Birds, show me one decent game that is comparable to an iGame. They dont compare... yet. But even so... I would never go back to an iPhone.
I myself would love to get into programming some more and start developing for Android.
But I agree that this will all get much better. We just gotta wait it out. And dont pirate paid apps... because that wont help with anything.

They will and then they will likely surpass it.
Just takes time and Google needs to improve the android system to support games including full hardware acceleration.
I think that people just expect way too much, even after the last year.
Think about it.
The last year was ridiculous for Android.
If you said a year ago that Android would have such a large percentage of the smart phone market share... or that it's Market would be closing in on the size of Apple [what is it 200,000 to 300,000 now?] people would call you crazy.
The amount of growth in the last year has just been ridiculous.
Of course, we can only hope for growth of that nature to continue but realistically, it wasn't even seen as possible last year.
We can hope for more apps and more improvements, as it benefits all Android users, but let's also not take for granted what has happened.

You bring up some good points.
Android over taking the iPhone in the US (keep in mind that the iPhone still has a decent lead internationally) has been big news over the last few days. Some people like to think that more users equals more games/apps but what they fail to realize is that a lot of these new Android users are at the bottom of the pyramid (free or very cheap phones), this brings an interesting dynamic that is different from the iPhone. For one, a lot of these users bought very incapable low priced Android phones; and two, these users bought a cheap phone and would probably be less likely to purchase games/apps anyway. Android is surpassing the iPhone in sales largely because of these low priced phones but this will also lead it to becoming a less attractive platform for developers.
Other factors that make purchasing less likely on Android:
- No wide adoption of carrier billing.
- Just my opinion, but I wouldn't be surprised if piracy is more popular with Android users.
Whatever the reasons, people just don't buy as much apps on Android. Angry Birds being an ad supported game on Android and a paid game on iOS is a testament to that. I'm also curious to see the long term returns on game advertising. They make a lot of money now but the mobile ad space hasn't stabilized yet and I fully expect the CPC to go way down as it does - how many accidental clicks must there have been? Had to be tons; and regardless, who wants to go to the browser in the middle of a game?
Then you ad the usual suspects HW and OS fragmentation, etc. Android has a uphill struggle to get developers (and especially game) committed to the platform.

Carrier billing does need to be added. across the board. [But being on one carrier for the last four years aids in have 100% carrier billing ]
But I'm not sure I fully agree with the rest of what you say.
Honestly, a lot of what you're saying is moreso true for a year ago than it is now.
-The "low end android phone" this year easily has the capabilities and hardware power of Iphone 3g or 3gs.
-Android "fragmentation" is a vastly over exaggerated point comparative to a year ago. http://www.androidcentral.com/sites...487/2011/01/thumb_550_AndroidOS_breakdown.PNG
Side note: do you have any data that proves, not just suggests, that android users buy apps less?
Android may have more users than iPhone now, but that has only been true for a little while.
So how fair is it to directly compare the two? [some kind of percentage comparison would be better]

Oh totally... because for an iPhone you have to be jailbroken to install an app not from the app store. Any android phone can side load a game. That's why it's so important not to pirate games.

I can play Mortal Kombat 3, Legend Of Zelda:Link To The Past and Super Metroid. Do these count? Awesome games can be played on the EVO, you just have to know where to look BTW - I don't understand the fascination with hardcore gaming on a Phone. Even thou I have these games on my EVO, I have only played MK3, and that's just a few times. If I am at the Dentist (or comparable office), I just play Angry Birds or Jewel Lust just to pass the time. If I want to play a real mobile game I just bring my PSP or DSiXL with me. These games eat up the battery on a phone rather quickly.
Wow, for a little rant we seem to have good info and opinions here
Great points all around, I do realize how young the platform is and I also realize we have hardware/software fragmentation issues, I know we are getting there it was just a bit frustrating to see that this morning(think it was the coffee kicking in). It was said that Android users aren't the best of consumers at times, and I agree, BUT I can say that since I became an Android user and involved with XDA I have come to appreciate the value of software releases(game or app or LWP), I now know what goes into them and I honestly don't mind paying. Well, again great points made by everyone, one last thing... I have been following CES pretty close this year and with the hardware being stepped up exponentially by manufacturers and Google still churning out better and better software I gotta say I see 2011 being a good year for us

While I agree with you that games are way better on the iphone/ipod, I have to say that when I found out that Doodle Jump was available on Android, I knew it was okay to get the Evo. I think that was the first step. Angry Birds is the second step. The third step would be to allow Android phones to play Scrabble with iPhones (with the iPad as the Scrabble board).
Also, iphone users like my Alchemy and Alchemy Classic games but they can't play them.

Why? This phone should've been selled like hot bread, it should've been as popular as the PSP or iPhone, it had and has so much advertisements, it's now on Minecraft site's front page, page visited by thousands of people.

I really don't understand.
As long as the community is alive, it's not took bad... (for us)
It sux that SONU ERIcson can't make money.. Not sure what they can do..

From the Article:
"This means that everything should be fine in Q3 and Sony Ericsson should be back in the black when the next report comes out."
As it also says, the earthquake had a huge impact on them, and this is after 5 consecutive quarters of profit. Wouldn't worry too much.
Earthquake in Q1 delaying the delivery of phones to all regions till start of Q3... No big surprise there.
However they should be fine soon.

While companies like Samsung, Apple, HTC and LG are making lots of money, SE, with the ultimate XPlay still loses money and can't make it on top.

I think they should have pushed the play more in the united states. I only saw 2 commercials and that was after the phone was already out in the market for a couple of months.

Yeah, maybe in Q3 they would have more profit, but just enough to cover that -50 mil.
The advertising campaigns in south america have been a real success. Most tweets in Spanish about the play are comments about them...
Also releasing it at the same time that they announced the Vita may be part of it. I know people who didn’t get one because the Vita is coming and this thing only plays PSX (And not many if you done use and emulator) and phone games. I was hoping for games designed with the play in mind and not just phone updated for the plays controls. This doesn’t work if not done right. A lot (not all) of people don’t like how they made the controls for all the good Gameloft and EA games.
It is not what I expected for sure. (But I still love it)

I have seen many in Canada. I watch a lot of Game related channels like G4TV.
I also agree with the other guys that say it will turn around soon.
Lack of mainstream games is the reason SEXPlay isnt doing as well as it should be.
I only bought the phone for emulation so I am happy whatever games do or do not get released for it.
However, I've read that 75% of Xperia Play owners have bought compatible paid games. That means that a niche is there.
Cant argue with that. I myself have bought most Gameloft games. Currently bought and loving Reckless Racing too
New Jrioni update has made Mame totally awesome aswell.

I have bought HEAPS of games and i don't usually do that for a phone.
I am pretty sure SE was losing this amount every year without having any of these droid phones but sales have picked up remarkably since they bought into android.
Sony has always threatened closing down their mobile arm but these figures aren't really anything alarming seeing that some regions are just getting the phone now and with the price drop more units are flying off the shelf.
I got all my gameloft games for free from underground community here, b'coz in our poor country, gameloft games are priced too high.. One gameloft game egual to a cost of my lunch + dinner here, sometimes even equal to breakfast + lunch + dinner

I have purchased a few.
I have also spent $Hundreds in iOS Games. The only thing keeping me from spending more on the Play is lack of memory. I don’t want to spend $70+ on a bigger SD card. The 16GB one cost me over $30.

You can buy a $500+ phone but can’t spend $5-$10 for a game?
Not cool dude.

poor country lol. That is no excuse.
In NZ and AU we pay 6 - 8 dollars per game and I also can get a cheap breakfast/lunch for that price.
Also rather annoying because the AUD is as strong as the USD yet we pay more.
Either way that is no excuse for pirating... You are essentially saying "I should get things free because I can't afford it" and you may as well walk into a Games store, take a game off the shelf and put it in your pocket and walk out, if you have that logic.

Atleast they got the sh1t version of the Xperia Play with a terrible provider

Angry Birds Space NOT initially a Note exclusive.

The trailer is out, take note (npi) of the final screen. - Doesn't look like any timed exclusive is happening as has been suggested.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=MRxSVEM-Bto
Potentially the Android market version may only be initially available to devices that identify themselves as the Galaxy Note, but tomorrow it will supposedly be available for Android, iOS, Mac and PC.
And I would imagine the free APK will be immediately distributed for Sideloading anyway.
Regardless, not as big a deal as it was made out. Not that I care anyway, just saying
Yeah
Its stupid game anyway , not like they release the best game ever or so
So much propaganda for nonsense
hmmm...
I also heard it was for the Galaxy Note first...and I didn't even know about the iOS, Mac, PC, etc...
I'll be in no rush to get it.
(However, a 13-Tile Mahjong game...I'd paid for that in a heartbeat)
The exclusive thing about it is that note owners get extra 30 levels, but the game will still be releaser to other phones.

Wait for the "Premium pack" to be released (ie. ICS for Note).
Just tried Angry Birds Space, and its clearly not optimised for the resolution of our displays. Although the main game is full-screen, all the cut scenes and menus are obviously designed for low-res displays.
Ironic, considering this game was supposed to be so closely tied to the Note.
I'm sure a lot of ppl will agree with me saying that we don really care about the angry bird space ****.
We just want our Ice Cream Sandwich!
I downloaded it, not very fun, I uninstall less than 15mins
No offence to anyone... But what did you expect?
This is extra marketing for both companies and that's all it is... Rovio, a company that makes MILLIONS for there games wouldn't make a game optimised for what is essentially still a niche device..
Hell, optimisation will always be based more towards iPhone (if of course it were optimised for a specific device).
But, I do think its a fairly fun little time waster.. and Ill never knock something I didn't pay for. Now lets all forget this political ridiculousness and look forward to Gnote ICS Premium Suite.
Direct link to apk please?
Hmm, so the extra levels are there by default if you have a Samsung phone. Just go to Danger Zone.
So then what is all this fuss about re. the Premium Pack and its relation to Angry Birds?

I love the whole try and pull the wool over our eyes routine. I mean, they obviously missed their mark on this "flagship device" and to try and mask that they jump out with "ALL NEW EXCLUSIVE NOTE ANGRY BIRDS LEVELS!" Is that supposed to make me glad I got my note? Nope, it was the fact that it I really thought sammy would be on top of this one and we would see the updates quicker. Still a great device mind you but man I wish we got some more love from big ole samsung, nope S2 gets it, who would figure. Rant over....
In the Level-Section "Eggsteroids" is next to Level One a golden Galaxy Note, maybe this has to do something with the Galaxy-Note-exclusive part?

Yes, that's the only exclusive level for Note users.
It's confirmed in the Introducing Premium Suite with Ice Cream Sandwich video description: www(dot)youtube(dot)com/watch?v=RkZz2pr69DY
Plus, GALAXY users can also access an exclusive GALAXY Note level in Angry Birds Space, the newest Angry Birds game from Rovio Entertainment, along with a special package of 30 challenging levels in "Danger Zone".
