[Q] Froyo 2.2.1 for the Magic released - Hero, G2 Touch General

Froyo 2.2.1 for the HTC Magic has been released by Vodafone UK. Does this mean we may yet get it for the Hero?

I assume you are under the (false) impression that HTC Magic has sense in their official release....
(Am I wrong that it doesn't?!)

I realise this, I was mereley pointing out that support is still there from the carriers for older models with HTC. From a development point, this support can only help and assist developers in using the lates official drivers, frameworks etc.. to adapt and tweak.

actually htc magic will recieve 2.2.1 in the UK, just google it.. (offical from vodafone that is)

HTC Magic is just plain old vanilla Android.

Well , HTC Magic received and 2.1 Sense official rom , may be that will be the case again.

To quote the Vodafone post on it:
'... improved support for Active Sync Exchange (email, contacts and calendar sync)'
That to me says it is vanilla FroYo.

I agree that it does look like vanilla Froyo, but I was merely stating that it is good news that the Magic is still being supported and updated to newer firmware etc. This can only be good news to other handesets such as our Hero's. After all, any new firmware will only enable developers to get their hands on the latest drivers, frameworks etc...

I wonder what kernel version it is running?
Would be nice to one day salvage enough driver code to get .34 or beyond running on our phones!

Hmmm... Interesting, though not that likely to help in terms of drivers IMHO, given we've got CM properly compiling for hero.
Kernel sources, now that's another matter
Bet this will annoy stock hero users, that an older device will get 2.2 and they won't (officially). Time to head over to XDA for them perhaps?
All I will say is don't get your hopes up at a .34 kernel. It might, but bear in mind that gingerbread runs on .29 on the emulator, so it could be a .29 one again...

Y HTC Magic can get 2.2.1 update and Hero don't?

I assume because HTC Magic does not have Sense.

yeah, I think the vodafone htc magic never had sense (the unbranded ones got sense in the 1.6 and 2.1 versions)
isn't there a chance that you can port this camera driver to hero with Sense? I mean both phones had almost the same hardware..
also I heard from another forum that the 2.2.1 update for Magic has 2.6.32 kernel..
will that help?

None of this is new, the Magic has had a senseless 2.2 (I assume 2.2.1) update from TMO with a .32 kernel for quite some time now. For now, none have succeed porting its camera to the Sense 2.2 - even the magic Sense 2.2 ROM (which is based on the gratia and legend ports) has the exact same problems like we do.....

Sprint Hero and 2.73.405.5

Hey All,
I just switched from my HTC Touch PRO to the HTC Hero. I use Sprint as a carrier and I am looking forward to getting used to the Android platform. My phone is running the following rom.
Firmware: 1.5
Baseband: 1.04.01.09.21
Kernel: 2.6.27-533ce29d
Build: 1.29.651.1
Software: 1.29.651.1
Anyhow, I was wondering if I could upgrade to 2.73.405.5 ROM. I know that this is available for Europe but I don't see it for US yet. Is there a big enough difference between ROMs that I would not be able to upgrade?
Thanks for the help in advance and I hope to be able to contribute to the community with so apps.
The problem with having the US version is that it is (correct me if I am wrong) the only CDMA android device so far. Although 1.6 Donut should have CDMA support, it was not included, so they opted to modify 1.5 to make it work. Anyway, the point is this:
1) we will see some official update in the next month or so from Sprint, HTC, or maybe android 1.6 (?)
2) We are all in need of root access to the phone to start getting some cool ROMs, the new radio, wifi-tether, etc

I second both of these I have been reading about problems with this phone and it seems to me that they are all related to the modification of the 1.5 rom to make CDMA work and to get it out to the consumer as soon as possible
Can someone provide me with a Nandroid backup of the Sprint Hero ROM? If so, i'm happy to do a MoDaCo Custom ROM for it?
P
Have we confirmed whether the kernel vulnerability is fixed on the Sprint Hero?

As has been already stated, chances are if you "upgraded" to an EU ROM your phone wouldn't work any more due to lack of CDMA support in the EU builds.
However, thus far we've no evidence that the Sprint build is a "lower" build than the EU versions, as the build number sequence seems to be totally different. Apparently the Sprint Hero shipped with the Sense UI performance enhancements that we now have in EU 2.73 builds, so it seems to me you're unlikely to gain anything anyway. In fact, you'll just lose stuff like the Sprint specific apps.

Dave
hey thers is a new system dump from sprint hero available here....can anyone tell me dat is dat possible for me to flash it on my phone...
http://www.androidspin.com/component/content/article/3-latest-news/169-new-sprint-hero-system-dump
It's almost certainly just a dump of your existing ROM. As the thread you posted suggests, it's for devs only and you shouldn't attempt to flash it.

Dave

didn't it just get released today? And yeah search is my friend.... Just didn't see a point to do another search from the one I did yesterday if this thread wasn't updated as I was assuming with the title it would be easier for us sprint users to see this thread is for the cdma version but alas my mistake

They have not released an android 2.0 OTA update for the magic yet. However, there are modded ROMS that will give you a similar look and feel, but they can still be buggy since the appropriate drivers have not been released yet.

That's a good one to check out.

2.1 + sense ui is coming - Rogers's users have got an update!

It is confirmed by users that there is already available 2.1 update.
Some of them are downloading now their update.
Source:
Rogers Forum update
Maybe we can get fully working 2.1 + sense ui on our Magic - original kernel and drivers from HTC
I hope it will be rooted soon so i can put it on my Magic.
Can wait to try it on my Magic Hope some developer will bring it to us ASAP
Let the hunt for the ROM begin! Seems like it will be OTA for now, but the OTA url is visible in the logcat right?

I don't know, but it shouldn't be a problem. Hero got update by OTA too, and base was extracted despite of that fact
I just installed this on my Rogers Magic. It doesn't include any of the new HTC widgets (mail, Friend Stream, ect). Does anybody know if it is possible to add them?
Just installed the update. Looks fine, keeps all data and apps intact.
Google Voice search FS's on the 3 magic phones we updated.
Cab anyone compare overall performance between this official 2.1 release and the ported 2.2 releases available here in XDA? BTW, they said there will be no further updates to Magic, but I read somewhere that a french provider was working on an official FroYo release. Is that true or the update from the frenchs will also be an Eclair release?
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
I'm guessing this will never be able to work on a 32B device right?

I'm not a developer, but I would suspect that it would be easier to port this release to 32B, than ROM's made for Hero/Legend/Desire devices, since 32A and 32B share most of the hardware (except the amount of RAM)

well your response gives me some hope, and its what i thought too same hardware except ram.
Here's a question for those who know better:
Would it be safe to flash this 2.1 RUU on to Euro 32A Magics?
RUU of expected 114.73MB size can be downloaded from here: http://member.america.htc.com/download/RomCode/HTC Magic (Rogers)/Magic_Rogers3.54.631.3.exe
Since Canada and Euro use same GSM tech, it should be theoretically possible to make this procedure on EU Sapphire 32A! Right?
no !
the device id will be not correct for the EU Sapphire 32A
Can't wait for a port..
app2ext, root, and an OC...
32a,32b & 1.2!

I've tried different android versions...
the 2.1 eclair is allright... the 2.2 froyo is ok... but the 2.1 sense build for blackstone is much better!
The 2.1 sense build you can compare that to the android for htc desire.
I recommend to check that out! You think 2.2 would be much better...
But that version of android is not fully operational. (I think they are working to get it fully operational)
With the 2.1 sense build you can do more stuff.. With wifi working and all... android market working..
So for me the choise is very easy to make...
thx for your answer
just another question : what is the difference betwee this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=621498 and this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=892181 ???
start reading
and you wil find out..

Thanks for your advise.
Where can I get 2.1 sense build for blackstone?
Android 2.2 works... It depends on if you want Sense or not. If you want a newer Android, choose 2.2. If you want Sense you have to choose 2.1.
However, it might change really soon. See this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10510668&postcount=263
If things works or not, depends more on your choice of kernel (which is under constant development and thus changes).

The HTC Hero was The first Android device with Flash? [VID]

http://www.adobe.com/devnet/devices/articles/htchero.html
I was surprised to see this, as I have never been able to see Adobe Flash in the Market; my HeroCDMA is not a supported device. And the websites he goes to in that video don't work as advertised via my phone, either.
What's the deal, here? Flash used to be on the Hero, now it's gone??
this is Hero GSM forum i think.
The CDMA got android 2.2 with sense camera work . Jealous....
Yes , The Hero Gsm is the one which have Flash , but when u rooted and flashed rom , then it gones~ , It comes with the original HTC sense 2.1/1.5rom
It only has Flash Lite.
As others have said. The version of HTC Sense on the GSM Hero has "Flash Lite" baked into it. This will give you access to a few website, but most likely not places like kongregate.
Most custom roms nowadays are based on Cyanogen and "vanilla", lacking any of the features of HTC Sense (including Flash Lite).
With the hero you have a choice:
Official version of Android 2.1 with HTC sense if you want flash (lite!)
OR
Custom roms (Froyo and GB) with performance improvements but no flash.
