i'm coming from an SE X10. the phone is eye candy. and other than the camera, it ain't all that.
looks like nexus one is getting ALL the goodies. so i'm thinking about picking one up.

Dropped calls are a network issue, not a hardware issue

No issues I know of with the phone. OP, no one likes dropped calls. Mine works fine - in this area. Your mileage may vary.
I can go a day, but not two with a single charge most of the time, unless I am using turn by turn nav, and then I am charging while driving. Radios eat batteries. Run only those you need, and keep good widgets handy to manage them.
I've had the Nexus One for AT&T for close to a month, and I live in the DC area. Take my unscientific, layman's review for what it is.
The phone is very nice. It's easily the best phone I've ever had, but I cannot say that it's a superphone without adding certain things to consider. I've been on this forum for a long time, since I bought an 8525 and was blown away to find through Google searches that people were customizing their phones to speed them up.
I really thought my days of modding the phone to death and waiting for the latest dev release to speed my phone up would be over with a 1Ghz phone with 512 MB of RAM running Android. Sadly enough, that's just not true. I figured the phone would fly out of the box. In a lot of ways it does, but I found the stock ROM to not be aesthetically smooth. The scrolling on the default launcher is borderline painful considering the hardware. Third party launchers like LauncherPro are essential (to me) for a smooth user experience.
I'm also disappointed by the browsing experience. Many sites feature choppy scrolling, another thing I thought would be behind me with a phone so powerful. Considering how the iPhone 3G my girlfriend has regularly puts up a smoother scrolling experience than the Nexus One particularly hits home.
But, after some tweaking (Cyanogen Mod, a 1.1 Ghz Kernel, and some third party apps from the Market), I am really, really enjoying the phone. The camera is very high quality, better than I expected, and the flash works much better than I anticipated. I find myself rarely using my desktop or laptop because everything I'd do on there I can accomplish on my phone. It's become rather integral to my day to day activity.
I'm probably a heavier user than most people, so my battery life is rather flimsy. I can drain the battery easily in half a day, but I keep push on, keep the brightest relatively high, and am always tinkering around with it. I bought this pack of 2 batteries and an external charger for about 20 bucks off of eBay, so I'm never without a fresh battery so it's not a big deal for me, but it would have been nice to have better battery life.
One of the biggest glaring faults is the touch screen sensor used in this phone. When I see the term superphone, I don't expect to find out that previous generation, inexpensive components are used. As it stands now, the sensor gets confused when two touches are put on within 15mm along the same axis. What this means is that for games where say a virtual stick and buttons are along the same axis you will have input issues because it'll read as one straight line rather than you moving the stick up while pressing fire.
It's something you can look up on the internet or youtube. It's been talked about quite extensively. It's definitely the biggest detractor for me. It's fine for browsing and pinching, but if you game keep that in mind. You'll also occasionally find some weird inputs in general at random, especially if there are a lot of finger prints on the screen, or if you're holding the phone with one hand and you try to reach across the screen with your thumb. All in all it's poor form to use such a lame sensor, especially considering that phones generations before this one have better hardware.
But, I love the phone. It being a Google phone almost guarantees that it will be first in line for Android updates (Froyo?).
The pro's outweigh the con's, in my opinion, and it's a very nice phone. Froyo will make it an even better phone. As far as 3G, I don't have any problems. I've gotten at as high as ~2900kbps, which is a lot faster than I ever got on my iPhone or Tilt 2.
The only phone I'd take over this is the Evo 4G, because of the screen and the 4G. But from what I read the camera's actually better on the Nexus One.
Don't do it! Nexus is all hype. Keep looking, there are better phones on the market. I love my nexus, but it annoys me. It has stupid little quirks. I can't wait until my next phone.
With that said, if you still want it. Battery life is impressive and AT&T connectivity is decent in my area.
I just dumped my iPhone 3g for the Nexus one.
The out of the box Rom is crap, particularly if you need Exchange sync full support.
You need to unlock the bootloader and put a better rom on.
Once I switched to Modaco's R21 Rom and now trying some different Kernels, it does everything I need.
It is fast, stable, my coverage on ATT is still the same, no difference.
Maybe look at getting the HTC Desire, that will run on ATT right? There are versions out there you can get that will run 3G I thought.
Nexus is not all hype... obviously no phone is perfect but I didn't regret spending $560+ for this phone... if you root or not froyo will make this phone a great buy.

i guess the thing about nexus one is that it's going to be getting all the updates firsthand and a lot faster than almost all the phones out there. flash and the allegedly 450% boost in speed is something that i seriously consider.
i like the evo but i'm not sure if it would work with ATT's network.

I think the Nexus is the least hyped phone if you compare it to iPhone forexample. Especially since it's the Google phone.. you would belive it was hyped up and donw, but there was little publicity about it in my opinion. Just rumor talk and it suddenly was out for sale..

If all goes well, i'm ordering my nexus one tomorrow. You bet i'm excited. I believe the EVO only works for sprint.. but I may be wrong about that.

i'm really thinking about getting the nexus one. google store is closing down so i guess i have to make my decision real soon.
right now it's all about the software. i think x10 has a better overall hardware but the software is outdated and there are apps that do not support 1.6. plus flash is coming out for android and nexus one rooted or not will get it regardless. so the hardware for my x10 is impressive but without the software to make advantage of the x10 is kinda leaving me with a sour taste in my mouth. plus no multi-touch for x10, ever. another drawback...

I've been very very happy with my N1, much happier than my friends were with their iPhones when they first came out.
Im fine with mine. I can make it through the day on a battery although just barely on heavier usage days. This is all I have got out of any recent smartphone so charging nightly is situation normal to me. Mine has had no issues. Personally I have been quite happy with the N1, its been a pleasure to use and I have no problem with hanging on to it till the next thing comes along.
Hey guys. Im new to the forum, I've been over at M3 with my Motorola Cliq. I have a full upgrade available to me, and right now im considering the Vibrant since my fiance just got the captivate and its pretty sexy.
The only problem is, I dont know anyone with a vibrant, so instead of googling for bonehead reviews, i figured id post here and get opinions from people who are actually involved with their phones (and i will most likely root it). So my main question is, why should I get this phone instead of waiting for the G2 or the MyTouch HD? What are its main downfalls? Also, how is root on this phone? Hows the tethering, overclocking/underclocking? It looks like theres plenty of ROM support. Also, after briefly skimming through these forums, I'm seeing a lot of stuff on a "lag fix". What lag are you referring to?
So I welcome your personal opinions, good or bad, i appreciate it. Thanks.
PS - Cosmetically I must admit I'm not impressed. The IPhone-like body repelled me at first, and it really does feel like it may be TOO light. But if the good outweighs the bad, im sure i can get used to these things.

Thanks for your input. Well, I'm pretty used to horrible customer loyalty, having had to deal with Motorola for the past 10 months.
Thin and light: I must say, it feels like a toddler could snap it in half. That is one of my main concerns.

"Vibrant" screen, memory, speed, processor, thin phone, NO SLIDing KEYWORK, trackpad and touchscreen don't make senses to me... So vibrant all the way. For rooting i used "one click rooting" and lag fix i used Ryan's Lag fix, and to fix the GPS i used "vibrant-JI2-GPS.zip" (room manager needed)

Yes. I'm using Bionix's mods & he's got the GPS & all that other stuff fixed in his ROM. As long as you use a custom ROM it's all good.
I was disappointed with the stock firmware, and had started regretting my purchase. Then I rooted the phone and applied the bionix ROM, and now I'm loving my phone.
The thing is, Samsung takes a long while to support upgrades to Android, so if that's a problem, you may want to go HTC G2. Personally, I don't like the slideout keyboard, because they invariably feel more flimsy and prone to break than the candybar style of phone.
The GPS has been a problem for many people, myself included. Samsung has acknowledged the problem and is reportedly working on a fix. I can tell you that the bionix rom, like several others, incorporates a fix that has made it workable for me.
Another issue for many of us is the lack of a front-facing camera. Another poster has found the hardware for it online for $17 US, and I hear that one of the developers may be working on the software.
Overall the phone, once a custom rom is in place, is snappy and a good performer. After flashing the rom, my only real complaint has been the poor T-Mobile coverage, especially in my home. There is a recent rumor that T-Mobile is going to enable UMA (cell phone calls over wifi) for recent Android phones. That would pretty much finish off any of my complaints...

I have not owned any other smart phones before I purchased this Vibrant. That being said, I absolutely love this phone. The only issues I have had with it is the GPS problem (takes forever to lock on and loses signal randomly than can't find a lock again for quite some time) and the "Lag". For clarification, the "Lag" is a very minor issue that affects only some phones, and is only noticed by the picky users IMO. Basically, you click on something and the phone "lags" out every now and than for maybe 1 second.
Now it needs to be stated that not all Vibrants are experiencing these issues. My wife has a Vibrant as well and has not noticed any major issues with her GPS, while I have on mine.
However, if you have no qualms with modding your device, the two major issues this phone has can easily be fixed. Rooting couldn't be simpler with the One Click Root (You install it on your computer, attach your phone, and click a button, than follow 3 easy steps on your phone). There are One Click Lag fixes that are just as easy (Which can be downloaded from the market). I have used it and it without issue. The GPS can be fixed by either flashing one of the multiple fixes out there, or simply installing a custom ROM from Bionix, or Eugene. (I am currently using Eugenes Frankin-Twiz and my GPS locks on in about 20 seconds, and hasn't lost signal once.)
That being said, I have heard that a JI5 update for our device is being rolled out pretty much as I speak via KIES. Don't know what that update fixes, but from what little I have read, people that had GPS issues are no longer having them after updating. I just backed up my current ROM and will likely be flashing the update shortly to test it out.

You wouldn't say that if you used an app that hits the database hard.
Newsrob for example, an excellent google reader app. It's SLOW on a stock vibrant. Apply any of the lag fixes, and it FLIES.
For many apps, I would actually agree that it's nit-picky. However, Samsung F-ed up by trying to force their stupid proprietary filesystem on all of us when standard ones perform significantly better. There's no good reason to cripple this excellent hardware with crap software when free, open source software that is already in the Linux kernel Android is based on is so much better.

i do regret jumping the gun on getting the vibrant, because i'm a huge fan of physical keyboards, and the g2 looks to have a pretty decent one. with that said, that is the only advantage the g2 has.
vibrant's pros-
display. i really don't think we'll see another phone that can match this phone's screen for a good while.
tv out. loading movies up on my phone and plugging them into the tv is fantastic!
gpu. everytime i check out some market games, the general comment concensus shows that the galaxy s phones never really have an issue running any games. the ps1 emulator running flawless is pretty much all the proof you need.
dev support. coming from the g1 with cyanogenmod, i was kinda worried that we wouldn't have any decent devs working on this thing, but my worries were unfounded. the user sombionix has made a ROM on his own (as far as i know) that has made this phone into the powerhouse it should be. the battery life is worlds better, it runs like i expected it to run when i first got it, and the list goes on. there's also a handful of other users whipping up some pretty decent themes and mods for us.
that's all i can think of at the moment. my personal cons with the phone are no led notification, no keyboard, and certain elements of touchwiz. i really wanna like tw, but there are some features that should be able to be changed or completely disabled.
so it's really up to you. just know (as i learned) that once you buy a phone you really want, there's gonna be 5 more just around the corner that you'll really want too. so just do some research, weigh the pros and cons, and go from there. luckily for us consumers, we've reached the point where there's nothing but good **** coming out, so let's reap the benefits.
I've noticed alot of Devs are moving towards the Vibrant, that says it all. Yes there are minor issues but fixes are already present and official fixes are on the way. Plus when we get Froyo, this baby will be on steroids. Get it! I hear that Walmart is selling it for $99. That should seal the deal for you.

Im actually one of those picky users that you guys are referring to ....processor speed is number one on my list of things that i want out of a smartphonee, thats why i was concerned about this issue, but i hear nothing but positive results from these "lag fixes" so i dont think its enough to affect my decision. heres my list, in order, of important things in a phone for me:
1. Processor - 1gh hummingbird, which can be overclocked/underclocked....+1
2. Storage/Memory - this phone has pllllenty....+2
3. RAM - from what i gather, this phone is up to par, no more no less than the average Android smartphone....0
4. Modding abilities - The developer support for this phone seems very good, with a decent amount of ROMs to choose from that offer your basic root features, and software improvements +1
5. Display - no need to explain....+2
6. Keyboard - Lacks physical keyboard....-1
7. Design - IPhone look is too unoriginal and basic (not looking foward to people asking "derr, is that an iphone??"), phone seems way too prone to damage with being as light as a feather....-2
8. Firmware - I can't grade it, cause it's not something you can judge on paper, but its last on the list because ROMs usually address any issues....0
Well, based on my horrible, makeshift, totally irrelevant grading system...as a non-user, this phone gets a +3.
The only reason im dissecting and trying to pick all of your brains is because, 2yrs is a long time to commit to a phone, and like christpuncher said it will most likely be behind the pack within 6months, and i really want to make sure this phone will put up the longest fight possible.
Android 3.0 should be released around the New Year, whats the likelihood the Vibrant will see that?

More important then specs and what everyone else thinks in a biased Vibrant forum is what do you want and need. I've owned the MyTouch (1rst Gen) HTC G1 and iPhone (jailbroken), HTC Touch Pro II and Vibrant on T-Mobile. And have used the MyTouch Slide for a few days. I don't think you can compare these phones apples to apples.
At least in my expeirence and view, the MyTouch phones are more along the lines of messaging/social phone. It's outta your way when your not using it (small) and feels more like an on the go phone. In contrast my Vibrant feels more like a premier and capable phone. It's more of a multimedia targeted phone and boasts a stronger cpu and better display. The G2 will have a hardware keyboard and if you've used the Touch Pro II's keyboard (best in market IMO) then you'll have an idea how great HTC's hardware keyboards can be. I miss that keyboard but have grown to live without it on my Vibrant. The G2 from what I've read wont carry the huge specs (800mhz cpu?) of the Vibrant but then again it's not targeted at the same market. I see the G1 and G2 as the do everything good phone.
My best advice is to wait till the G2 comes out and head down to a Tmobile store and play with them. I was set on buying the MyTouch Slide when I headed down to the store and check out the Vibrant b/c of the rave reviews. After holding it in my hands and playing with it, I was amazed but still was going to get the MyTouch Slide. Then I compared price, specs, and features and the Vibrant in my case was a steal after I headed to Walmart where I got it for $150. The MyTouch Slide was selling for $179 at Tmobile.
Anyhow, I would personally purchase the Vibrant again over the MyTouch and I would only want the G2 because it adheres to Android rules more so then Samsung does (filesystem and stock apps).

If I had to take a shot in the dark I'd say the Vibrant will NOT be seeing 3.0, but that is 100% speculation on my part. I'd imagine the G2 will get 3.0 and probably some updates further than that. That said, the dev support for the Vibrant is outstanding. At the moment I'm rockin' Eugene373's Frankin Twiz and Voodoo lagfix. I'd be willing to bet even if we don't get an "official" 3.0 update that we'll still see it on our Vibrants in due time.
i see a lot of people complaining about lag on the vibrant, my dad has one and i'm planning on getting one to replace my N1 as a normal useage phone (mostly because i'm stick of waiting 6 months for cyanogen updates now)
Anyway, i've noticed pretty much no lag on my dads vibrant for the last month or so. it sometimes takes a few seconds to load some of the default apps like dialer, contacts or messaging, but once your in there it's smooth as can be. Sims 3 is running amazingly smooth, and i can jump around avatar with pretty much no lag at all. and this is on a stock, unrooted, vibrant.
So i'm just wondering, so many people are complaining about the lag but i see none.
also downloading the update to my dads phone now so i'm curious to see how that will play into this.
*edit* oh and one thing i want to add, the 3d gallery, launcherpro, and any game is easilly running with a 2-3x faster framerate than my Cm6 N1. Honestly my dads phone makes my N1 look like a G1.
I've had the Vibrant since it's debut. I have an Exchange server at work and noticed horrible lag in the default email app and even worse in Touchdown. Tried RyanZA's v1 lagfix and was blown away at the speed difference. Now I have the JI6 update and the lag was better, but with the OCLF v2.1 applied my phone is so fast, it's stupid. If you don't think you have lag - try a lagfix and you'll see.

My wife and I both have the vibrant. Hers is slow, and mine is not. I have no idea what the difference is because, although hers is stock and nine is not, the lag was not a problem for me even when mine was stock.
It's because she is a woman and women don't know how to use phones. LOL. JK! (Sorta)

Where did you buy the phones though? Sometimes there are significant hard and software differences of each unit. For example, my first vibrant cant overclock, and it was hardware locked. This new one i have can do both flawlessly.

IMHO, and I own both a Vibrant and a G2, I did the same thing you are thinking about doing and I sold my N1 in the process. I kicked myself on a daily basis until I broke down and bought a G2.
The lack of a camera flash, non-working GPS, lag, 2.1 instead of 2.2, and a few other issues far outweighed the beauty of the screen for me. Don't get me wrong, the screen is F*#%ing AWESOME on the Vibrant. Its just that I found I couldn't live without a reliable gps, flash, (Adobe Flash is nice too), and the lag is annoying.
This is all my opinion of course, and to each his own. I recommend that if you get a vibrant you keep your N1 till you are sure you want the Vibrant. Personally I just sent my Vibrant back for the 3rd time, Including the original one that I bought, I will have my 5th Vibrant come tomorrow, I am ready to be rid of it but there is no resale value. Brand new in the box from Craigslist they sell for as little as $275. That is because of the BOGO and all the super deals on them right now.

Didnt read anyother replies. But I'm just going to recommend going to the development section and just download a bionix rom. Its the fastest thing on this phone as far as roms imo. Voodoo makes this phone fly even faster but the stock 1.8 rom is still really smooth without it.
People who complain about lag should spend 2 hours reading various guides and getting firmiluar with that device in your hand.

What do you need a flash for? Have you ever tried night mode with auto contrast on? Pretty awesome results unless you are trying to take pictures in pitch black.
And JI6 fixes both the lag and the GPS issues. If that isn't enough for you, bionix has done a wonderful job with his rom. Seriously, everything you are saying has either been fixed by JI6 or a dev.

My phone was running Frankin Wiz with Voodoo Lag fix, My gps still sucked. The gps tracks jump all over the place no matter what I do.
I am talking strictly of the out of the box experience between the two devices.
My question to you as a consumer, not a power user or hacker, or moder or anything like that, just an average everyday consumer is this: Do you feel like after spending $500 (out of contract) on a "smart phone", that you should then have to spend several hours of your time learning how to install third party firmware and hacks on your device, just so that you can get the functionality that was advertised?
If you bought a brand new car from a dealership and found out that you had to replace the transmission and pay for custom engine modifications for it to run right, would you say to your friends, "Well the car has some problems but you can fix them by getting a new transmission and having the engine overhauled, I think you should buy one." Why are you defending a product that is flawed? I own the phone, I paid $500 for it. I think that it is not what I hoped it would be. I like to mod my phone, I shouldn't have to mod my phone. Does that make sense?

I see your point, but the point is that Samsung has addressed the issues. Cars are not perfect and have to have things corrected with them also. Ever heard of a recall or factory defect?
Seriously, JI6 is a Godsend. I was running that STOCK with no modifications for a few days and then decided to try the newest version of Bionix. It wasn't because anything was wrong, I just wanted something different. I just put that on my phone TODAY. Again, I was running STOCK JI6 and the phone was perfect. I didn't even install a lagfix. When I was on JFD, there was unbearable lag, JI6 none.
I tried Eugene's rom in the past and nothing against the rom, it wasn't for me.
I just think you need to do your research more. I can see you are frustrated but like I said, you could have a fully functional phone without any modifications with the newest update. Then if you choose to, and only if you chose to, you could install a different rom.
I am actually not frustrated at all. You see I have exchanged my Vibrant 3 times for Warranty. I will be trading it in on a MyTouch next month. I am so fed up with my samsung experience that I will probably never buy another phone from them. I may give the TAB a shot, but if it sux like the phone it will go back before the 14 days is up.
I have had my Samsung since July. I wanted to love the phone, but overall I am really disappointed. I am going back to HTC.

Brand new in the box from Craigslist they sell for as little as $275. That is because of the BOGO and all the super deals on them right now.

Have you tried flashing a Bionix rom? No lag issues. Gps is fixed. Night and day difference compared to the stock rom.
If not, the G2 and Mytouch HD are very good alternatives.

Could there be some "bad" batches running around that suffer from this lag? Sort of like the harware locked phones... my first Vibrant was HW locked and I exchanged it and ended up with a non-HW locked phone.
On both phones, neither had any level of perceptible lag. Is it that bad that it's affecting everyday useage? Or are people possibly being a bit too nit-picky because their app launched in .001 seconds instead of .00001? I've heard people say their Vibrant lags hard while using Touchdown. I use Touchdown many, many times during the day for my work. Never once has it lagged on me. I'm coming from a MT3G, which was the king of lag so I should know about that.
I go hiking, camping and off-highway driving a couple of times a month so I depend on GPS to be working because I like to chart my trips and set waypoints for future use. I understand the Vibrant has an issue with that right now, but I'm patient enough to wait for the fix. If not, I can just use my Garmin handheld that has been relegated to the drawer which is more of a correct TOOL to use for that sort of thing anyway. It's certainly NOT a deal-breaker for me. Maybe I'm more patient than others.
No flash on the camera? Well, I knew about that BEFORE I bought it, so I have nothing to complain about there. Why would someone complain that it doesn't have a flash and they bought it anyway? Seems absurd. Were you misled somehow? I don't think so. No valid argument there.
No 2.2 yet? Big deal. The phone works. Not like you're running 1.5 with no future plan in sight. If you were, then you'd really have something to cry about.
I think some people are making a bunch of hay over very little things that can be remedied.
Guess I just got "lucky" with my phone, or maybe I'm just not a pain in the ass. I'd hate to be known by TMO employees as "Mr. *****MoanAndComplain", even when they've given me 5 phones already.
The lag issue depends heavily upon how you use the phone. I found certain applications more likely to lag than others, write intensive applications.
I switched to using Google Finance in the web browser from the "official" Finance application due to the heavy lag incurred whenever the app did a background sync. The same for some other apps like Touiteur or Mint.com's app. With JI6 the lag has improved, but it's still not "there" yet for my tastes. I still see a slowdown when K9 is running a background sync... and don't get me started on how slow the phone becomes when using the Facebook application (again, I end up using touch.facebook.com instead since it's faster for me).
My preference is for a multi-tasking phone to actually multi-task, and I also prefer applications to locally cache as much as possible. Unlike most applications where a local cache should provide a desired speed up, the usage of RFS is just as likely to generate a slowdown, counterintuitive really.
I have plenty of apps running all while playing music, no lag. You don't need a lag fix with JI6. Just avoid hacking up your phone. They're not as reliable as the phone would be stock. I'm sure Bionix is making some nice headway but can I guarantee you that it has more bugs than stock and won't look like stock (something we should all desire and change at will).

Is it because G2 is the spiritual successor of G1? Because when I visited G2 forum, G2 has its share of problems like lose hinge, temp root (I am sure it will be fixed), and of course only 2G of internal space, etc. But those who are so quick to jump on Samsung, no offense but you are one of them I see posting, gave G2 a 9/10. I am just wonder what is the difference that you can tolerate the fault of one phone but not the other.

My next phone will be iOS or WP7. I may just pay outright for an HD7 when released.
Half the issues are with Sammy, half are with Android. Basically the phone is at least usablr now, but I have founf Android to be boring and overhyped. /shrug
But Android phone support serms quite hit and miss and due to the android market and fragmentation manufacturers seem more intent on realeasing more devices than fewer, but higher quality devices with good support backing them.
If anything it has led me yo see the hidden advantages of Apple and Microsoft's approaches IRT their (new) mobile OSes.

Well i think my dads vibrant is hardware locked, i held the power button and volume down button and it just kept showing the vibrant boot screen and then rebooting back into it until i let go and then booted up normally.
As far as getting a vibrant for myself, i would wait for froyo. had froyo too long to go back to 2.1. But personally i've used a G2 and didn't like it at all. Didn't like the form and weight, and even though the speed was a lot better than my N1, to get it the way i would want it i would still have to change the rom and do tons of other stuff.
So looking at the vibrant, i'll lose my trackball and flash, i can live without the trackball, and after taking some nightmode pictures on the vibrant they come out easily 100 times better then any picture i took with the flash on the N1, though losing the flash as a flashlight does kinda suck.
But just looking at the vibrant for me it's the best thing, i'd probably just root it and never change the rom since i actually like a lot of the touchwiz changes. Though i would install launcherpro and probably switch out for the stock messaging app.
And to test the lag some more on my dads phone with the new update, i had solitaire, 3d gallery, browser (with 6 windows), maps, and on the phone and i got no lag switching in and out of all the apps.
I searched through the forums quite a bit and even good but have yet to find anything specific. I'm not sure which phone to get since I can not find a rooted comparison.

Weight and size are not an issue: Glass screen is a +
Price is not an issue.
Standard Mini USB charging is a +
Battery life is not so important.
Texting Speed is 100% most important item - my hero can not keep up with my fingers and it is beyond frustrating.
I know this is the Epic forum so I can't say I don't expect you to be bias, but it would be nice to hear anything at all. Just wanted to hear how the phones compare as BOTH rooted devices with all speed benefits.
As of now the epic has an issue where it will miss keys on the physical keyboard every so often. Txlexting speed is also very important to me (I have an epic) and I have been dissappinted with the physical keyboard to say the least. That being said, the evo does not even have a physical keyboard and you could use any keyboard from the evo on the epic. The app "Smart keyboard" is the best of all that I have tried. The screen on the epic is also substantially better than the evo. The evo gets updates before the epic because it is an htc phone so that is always something to consider. Good luck.

If you fancy yourself with modding then an Evo is a clear cut winner. There are much more Roms, Mods, and source codes are always released first for HTC phones. Samsung has a history of not really supporting their devices. Epic is no exception. Actually, I completely forgot to mention, I don't know that I would use the keyboard much anyway. I guess if it was there, I may start to use it, but I like the touch screen keyboard, I'm quite fast with them. In fact I still use T9 a LOT, especially while I'm driving. So as far as the keyboard goes, not a huge pro/con for me. When I mention texting speeds, I just want the phone to be able to keep up with me. My experience with the HTC hero is bad in the sense that I'll be waiting every few words for the phone to catch up so I can check for errors before continuing to type.

Great news. I've been leaning towards the evo... looks like it's decided. Thanks again MLHickey.
Last note is, should I wait for early 2011 in case HTC releases something crazy. I mean, I can live on my HTC hero a few more months if I need to.
Just thought as an epic owner Im obligated to reply. The choice is a hard one, but the epic is faster, a better screen (even if slightly smaller) and since its basically stock android doesnt need roms like cynagen to be super fast and its only slightly thicker then the evo. You also get better battery life on the epic.
As for the keyboard, its really not that bad, and a keyboard is better then nothing at times when touch typing just isnt working out as planned.
I had the same hard decesion and luckily when I was visiting home a few weeks ago I got to play with my parents evo. Don't let the benchmarks fool you, the epic is much faster, plus that screen, you get size shock from the evo, but color and contrast shock from the epic. Plus you can install htcs awesome on screen keyboard on the epic. Its the best of all worlds in my book. The evo will have faster updates though, but really.. updates are almost superficial because by time android 2.2 is unsupported should they stop there you will likely be getting a new phone. Gps might or might not work better on the evo, some epics are fine, others aren't.

But what about Epic's ugly azz cool color temperature?! Whites look grey on it, screen has blue tint... sorry, photographer coming out in me, but Evo's colors are much more accurate.

I'm not tryna sound biased but u gotta be kidding me.. maybe ur gf's usage is much higher.. honestly 4 of my friends have evo's and whenever we're chilling on either of our houses, they fight over the charger.. although my epic is rooted and has custom rom+kernel and their evo doesn't but even b4 i rooted mine i had much better battery life..
The keyboard on this thing is not great, but it beats having none. WPM will not be high with this keyboard, although accuracy is not bad. Still, coming from a Hero, I really like having a keyboard now.
The main gripe is Samsung's poor support, small ROM, and the gps on this thing.
If you text a lot, this should still be your choice as it is faster than virtual keyboards.

No. I have asked about the Evo's battery life and I quite frequently hear it hardly makes it through the day from people who DO own them. I've had mine unplugged with moderate use and plenty of calls since 7am and its at 40% right now at 11PM. Now to be fair.. my Epic is rooted with the battery sucking processes from Sprint/Samsung cut out, the Evo's i've heard about are stock. If both were rooted you'd probably cut similar results.
They both have 1500MAH batteries, they will both be roughly the same if you cut the fat out of each I imagine.
As for the screen, yeah the colors are not as accurate, but you're not going to notice, they have a cooler look to them which bothers the heck out of graphics designers and the like heh heh but really.. it's still stunning in comparison to the evo, but thats just MY opinion.
You really need to go into the Sprint store and play with both as much as you can.... you really can't go wrong with either of them and their pro's and con's split pretty evenly.
1) for the keyboard issue..try disabling Swype and use the hardware kb.
2) Epic even with the custom roms we have is doing fairly well...I mean take all the custom roms on the EVO and the Epic and you'll notice there isn't too much difference...most of the advantages EVO had was gotten from the Nexus One which hopefully we will get from the Nexus S.
3) You can do a bunch with custom roms on the EVO to make it run smoother but It'll never run as smooth as the epic.
4) The colors can't be more accurate on the EVO because its only 64k colors..if anything Droid X has probably the most accurate colors...but since EVO is only 64k colors it won't be accurate...the Super AMOLED tends to be mroe blue because the blue dies out the fastest...over time it balances itself out...on my device though if I set it to 100% brightness its white as I lower the brightness it turns grayish..but thats what lowering brightness is suppose to do...
5) Yeah.. texting while driving is bad...
6) Battery life varies by your usage..overall though if you configure it best you can on both devices Epic will win.

i had to read that twice, he wasnt talkin about you only having two cents... he was referring to owning both phones... just kinda seemed like u took that the wrong way...
Personally, I never got to actually play around with an evo but I will say these things about my epic:
The keyboard, though sometimes annoying, is a great bonus to have for those who text/email/im/fb/whatever a lot. And you can bring the htc keyboard over to the epic as well.
The battery life on custom roms/kernels seems to be better when compared to most evo scenarios (I don't have an evo so don't quote me)
The color temps can be fixed using voodoo color.
The phone DEFINITELY responds better to user input than the evo, hands down (probably due to the evo having so much bloat, and also due to the better built cortex processor)
Updates on the evo happen more quickly, this is very true. But our devs have done a great job fixing MOST of our major issues.
This is a big one that people seem to be failing to mention. The new froyo modems seem to FIX gps PERMANENTLY. I've been running wifi on my epic for days without a reboot and gps is on hot start (not using the cold start workaround) and every time I get a full lock within seconds (using gps status).
All in all, I love my epic and the way it runs thanks to our community, but if you want a more reliable manufacturer (and a community that isn't chock full of spoiled brats who's parents bought them the phone), go with the evo.
If you can deal with the slower updates and the forum nonsense, go with the epic.

I wonder how many kids actually are on these forums when I was 12 I wasn't looking for ways to hack my cell phone... then again when I was 12 I think that Motorola "flip" phone that looked like something outta star trek was the most popular one for being so "portable". lol

First off, I love T-mobile, had them since the Shadow came out, and moved up to the G1 when it was launched. They have the best customer service and most reasonable, and most clearly stated rates and bills. My employer recently offered to provide me with a smartphone from verizon, so my wife and I left T-mobile and our vibrants.
She hated her vibrant since day one, so I was always trying to defend the sammy phone and tweak/flash hers to make her happy. We settled on the most recent TW rom and continued battling the annoyances that comes with owning a vibrant. The phone has some great things going for it. It's very thin, and light (some call this "cheap" feeling, I love it personally). It has an awesome screen and will play a wider range of media formats than anything I've ever ran across. However, the lag, various different "lag fixes", random force closes, dropped data and voice signal, freezing and even random shutdowns were difficult to deal with.
I now have a Thunderbolt. It's big, heavy and thick. I don't have 4g in my area, so that's no gain, but it works. It works great, right out of the box. Then with a little effort (the rooting method is pretty lengthy) it screams. It has made me realize how much I was rationalizing my satisfaction with the vibrant.
On paper, the Vibrant should be better in my situation/location. Better GPU, smaller form factor, better screen (I still think 4" is the perfect size for a phone. 4.3" is pretty large in your front pocket), but truth is, it isn't. My advice is to sell it while you still can, and move on to something else. I have no personal experience with the G2, or MT4G, but they're both HTC phones, with plenty of support. My guess is they would do the same for you as my thunderbolt has for me.
Just to clarify, I have the upmost respect, and appreciation for the devs and contributors here. I appreciate their efforts, and do not intend to belittle any products they released or efforts they have made. My opinion, the Vibrant was crippled from the start, and they've done an outstanding job enhancing it. Thank you.

While I agree that the phone has its problems, neither I nor anyone else I know with a SGS variant (vibrant, fascinate, etc.) has THAT many issues. I waited about a month to flash this phone and while I was on stock the only problem I had that you mentioned was lag. After I rooted it got better but I never truly got a lag free experience until bionix 1.3.1. I'm guess you sold your vibrant before TW came out with that ROM, but in all seriousness it handles better than my cousin's Evo with CM7 on it.
The latest MIUI ROM is also quick as lightning to which I found very surprising considering its a.) a port and b.) non AOSP
I will admit though that Samsung has created an enigma with this phone. On paper this phone is easily the best single core smartphone on the market yet, on stock, it is much slower than the likes of older HTC phones. So for awhile I regretted not waiting for the MT4G, but the recent ROMs and kernels have really stepped this phone up to the next level.
bionix v1.3.1 is very laggy. that is the reason i switched to trigger. trigger was much ,ore stable and consistant. edt has greate roms personally.

I've used CM7 for a while, and considering that it's still buggy, it's AMAZINGLY fast. Only problem is, I need a stable ROM, and that's where Trigger 2.8.1 came in. I though it was horrible, but I installed it last night, and it's nothing but amazing. I can't wait to flash 2.9, it's supposed to be faster.
Bionix 1.3.1 is not laggy on my phone. Thanks to that rom I really love my vibrant now. People that have the same phone with stock software are left with their mouth open after I show them what their phones is cappable of doing.

I've loved my vibrant ever since I had gotten it. I may have stayed on stock for all of 3 hrs (literally) before I flashed my first ROM (Nero) and I've never looked back. I've never experienced lag and my gps (assisted, ofc) was always on point. I don't know if it had to do with my manufacturing date (10/10) or what but my phone has never given me issues (that I didn't cause it to give me and even then, those were easy to fix).
My husband got a good look at how fast and glitch free my phone on a ROM was running. After a few months of random reboots, complete crashes & a host of other problems running stock decided to give up and joined me in flashing a Bionix ROM and he's never looked back either. I will admit that his gps was a bit wonky too but that also changed when he installed Bionix. Now it does see birds but locks on just a little slower than my gps does which really isn't a biggie anyhow.
It really sucks that we have to put custom roms on our phones for them to really be powerful. I love my vibrant, but the constant problems it was giving would have made me sold it if it wasn't for Team Whiskey and other developers. I have Bionix 1.3.1 and Ive done the hardware GPS fix and now my vibrant is running the way it should have when I first opened the box. This wouldn't be so bad if Samsung would just support their devices a little more.
Im ready to move on. I have had a good time with my vibrant.
My wife has had a so so but she loves it.
Still we both have decided to leave tmobile as well and are excited to see the many options coming in may to june. When we plan to switch carriers.
I like sprint. Im not sure if verizon compares in price.
If it does I love the nfl and that may entice me to verizon.
I dont want the thunderbolt.
Im just waiting for the dual core nvidia phones.
I like the galaxy s2 and with the nfl...whew.
Im really going to look at the cost of the s2 on verizon lte. Im really intrested in that combo as well.
Still ive had alot of good times with my galaxy s.
But the signal has been completely unreliable since day one.
As where my was always very solid.
I dont know what I'll do with my galaxy s.
I have some kids who love media players.
I wonder what it would take to make a rom that would allow me to disable calling and let them just use it for that.

Over the span of 8 months I started with the Vibrant then sold it for the myTouch 4G only to selling it and buy the HD2 at bargin. But, in the end I sold the HD2 and found a Vibrant on craigslist for cheap.
I really liked the myTouch 4G it is fast and very functional, but the screen size was just too small. Plus there was a batch of myTouch 4G units that had washed out screens; I was fortunate to end up with a good screen. The HD2 is the most versatile being that you can run so many roms from a variety of OS's on it including a very stable gingerbread 2.3.3 running from the NAND. Plus the 4.3" screen is great for browsing. I would still have the HD2 today if it wasn't for the At&T buyout of t-mobile. I fetched such a great price on my HD2 and found a vibrant for sale for $200; I jumped on it. Why? The vibrant will work next year on at&t's network so I won't be forced into contract with at&t by needing to buy a new phone to work with their networks. I don't like at&t (nasty customer service & dropped calls) and I really hope the buyout is blocked.
Which leaves me with no clear choice of carrier. Verizon has expensive plans and lots of unexpected costs. Sprint is trying hard to be CDMA version of t-mobile and have my interest, but will they be able to survive with at&t and verizon? Currently, I am no longer under contact so having the vibrant will provide me some time before deciding to commit to a carrier while testing the waters with merger.
So if my thoughts resonate with you maybe holding on to the vibrant won't be such a loss.

I agree that every phone will have a few lemons. However, with my wife, we had 2, which we both had replaced with new ones. I kept my wife's on what I thought was the most stable roms (mostly TW, Eugenes, Master's and toward the end trigger) while I flashed mine almost daily. Still they both exibited the same flaws, reguardless on what rom they were on. I always wanted to try CM7, but I have to use my phone's GPS for work (construction, so I'm always traveling) so that and MIUI was out for me. If you like your vibrant, then I'm happy for you, it's got great potential. But if you were like me, and TRYING to like it, my advice is to sell it and move on. You'll be very happy you did.
The Vibrant is an interesting device (or rather, the Galaxy S series).
The Hardware is good. As a phone, they are perfect: GREAT reception/signal strength, and great sound in the earpiece/speakerphone.
For media they are good. The screen is nice and the speaker on the Vibrant is superior to any other phone I've ever owned.
However, the GPS and Software Performance/Stability issues just make it not worth it. Flashing a phone every day? Sorry, you are too patient.
The battery life also leaves much to be desired, and swings a bit too wildly.
The Lack of an LED Notification Light also became an issue (something the HD2/HD7 has), as well as the lack of a Camera Flash since I found the Vibrant not worth using to take pictures in some areas without great lighting (rinks, etc.). I also found it's 720p video recording produced grainy videos (which looked like watercolor paintings a bit on larger screens).
As a secondary device it's perfect, though. I just had to brush it aside and get something else to use as my daily driver.
After using a 4.3" screen so much, 4" just seems so small. I can hardly type on the Vibrant because I'm used to the better WP7 keyboard and larger screen size. Browsing is noticeably easier and the Vibrant's browser tends to lag on a lot of pages, anyways so that was a good change. A 4.3" phone is hardly much bigger than a Vibrant.
If you can barely fit a Vibrant into your pocket, then either you're severely obese or wear skinny jeans.
My next phone will be a sgs2. Currently im bored out of my mind so I just picked up a dell streak. Uusally when I flash a new rom it works nice for the first 2 weeks but as I add my usually apps it eventually becomes laggy. Trigger rom has givin me great battery life. After work im between 50-60% now(8-5) before with bionix I barely could make it home before dying. But my god has the lag become very noticeable. Im currently using the default launcher pro with only pure widget calender, dolphings bookmark manager, and extended power control on the homescreens.
Ive been flashing roms since Winmo and I find it fun. Going to a hd7 for a short period of time showed me how good an os can be. I love android but these manufacturers are killing the os. I dont know to the extent when I heard google is putting some locks on the OS, I said good for them. As much as people dont like HTC Sense, its the only launcher thats implemented well.
I love my vibrant. why even make these kind of negative threads, just move on and stop bringing down the forum....
I had a hd2, hated it... But didn't go there and dog it...
I think of these threads as eulogizing, rather than *****ing: the Vibrant, how great it could've been - shame it ended up the way it did (i.e. a poorly executed & supported product)....

After rooting and running Bionix 1.3.1 and Overstock 2.2.1 kernel, my battery life has gone through the roof, I haven't noticed any lag, and it runs better than ever. I do still have slight issues with GPS (it locks but then after a few navigation instructions she forgets where I am and starts giving me different directions) I couldn't be happier with the phone. I guess YMMV depending on what you use the phone for. I'm sorry for the people that have had poor experiences with this device because the SAMoled is just stunning.
Wow, so many whines........... to date this phone has been one of the best units I ve seen. Only the GPS issue is a real complaint on the hardware side, which is totally fixable.
On the software side TMO and Samsung fail, but then that's why there is XDA. Since the Frankin Twiz rom in Sept 10 there has been a great performing, stable rom. And, Since Nov there has not been battery life issues,
People are being way too myopic about this. It is a great stable unit, and unless you have to have the latest great because of your addiction to it, then accept the consequences for that addiction.
ME ? I am waiting for the S2 and until then, this phone still rocks !

Ehh same here, I get bored easily, and the lag does become quite noticeable at times, switched to miui, and loved it for about a week, then got bored again.. currently attempting to trade my Vibrant for an hd2+100 on craigs ;] I'll surely miss it though!
Bionix was mentioned as being laggy. I've been running it for a week with no lag. Its been one of (if not the best) roms I've ever used.
