MyTouch 3G / MyTouch 4G Activation Made Easy - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hello, The other day I bought a MyTouch 3G and spent the better half of 1 day trying to figure out how to Activate this device without a data plan, I spent atleast 4-5 Hours trying to figure this out only to realize there is absolutely no easy way to do this with any method posted on the internet. Gold cards... Flashing .... Custom roms .... Chances of bricking , Rooting .... This all sounds like a nightmare!!! That is unless you use my Easy Method!!!
Step 1) Obtain a Tmobile Prepaid Sim card
Step 2) Change APN settings to WAP.VOICESTREAM.COM to trick tmobile this is a generic device and not a branded tmobile device.
Step 3) When you are at the google sing up page you will notice 2 html links that say GOOGLE and MORE INFORMATION.
Step 4) Click the More Information and it will ask you to purchase a 1 Day Unlimited Web pass for $1.49
Step 5) Sign in and enjoy your new device without 5 hours of headaches that I endured to bring this process made easy to you.
Step 6) Merry Christmas!!!
Also this method can be used to get you unlimited data for 24 hours for $1.49 that T-mobile does not allow on smart phones so this is sort of a 2 for 1 deal here, hope someone appreciates this!!

Bump... figure id bump atleast once

I just got a used MyTouch 3G, and had 2 prepaid sims lying around. I have looked and looked for like 2 days, and if this works.....dang. I would give you a hug.

So, having the Pre-paid SIM card in the phone will allow the initial setup till I get to setup the Wifi or still need this 1 day data plan ??

You'll still need the one day data plan. The only way your getting the wifi option during setup is from a custom ROM.

two sims, one number, two phones

Is it possible to clone a sim card and then have say an mda running with one installed and a going out phone with the other.
i'm guessing its possible but am after a step by step if anyones feeling helpful.
I wouldn't want to have both phones turned on at once if that makes it an easier process. Just getting hacked off at swapping sim all the time.
You cant clone a Sim like Hollywood Movies ... not normal Guys like you and me!
Talk with your Provider!
Same have a Service with Master Slave Cards. In Austria you can have 1 numbers and a lot of device they ring at the same time or in priority.
Cheers netrunner. Yep i probably have watched to many films. I tried to call my provider (tmob uk) but i'd have more luck getting into Angelina Jolie's knickers than speaking to someone there with an ounce of savvy.

Is it possible to clone the sim...yes...but illegal. You buy one of those 6 in 1 or 12 in 1 sim's plus reader for about $10 on ebay. (oh...only Tmobile still uses the Version 1 sim's that these can clone..everyone else has upgraded to version 2 which is uncrackable currently)
Is it possible to clone the phone..yes..but illegal....the hacking and development board has a thread on a free IMEI changer...you would have to run that and make sure both phones had the same IMEI.
---
Even if you did ALL those things there is no way you could have both on at the same time....every 20 minutes the phone reconnects with the tower...the tower is only going to allow 1 connection at a time so your connection is constantly going to switch from one to the other...and they will notice this and bad things will happen to your account and men in suits may show up at your door. The best you could manage is to turn one or the other on at a time which basically defeats the purpose.
Now go to your provider and pay them the extra for a 2nd line and use conditional call forwarding (forward to phone 2 when phone 1 doesn't answer..used to forward to voicemail normally) to accomplish the same thing.
Good thinking

Right with that clever piece of logic i'll try it with a pay as you go sim and forward from the contract one and that should do what i want. (just hope the forwarding charge comes off my free mins)
Called Tmobile uk who have told me that the call forwarding to the pay as you go sim wont cost any more and will come out of my contracted minutes.

Can't register with Google.

I just purchased a G1 from someone on craigslist... popped in my sim card and registered it and used it for calls and text for the last two days.
Today I decided to change my rom from crb43 to dreaimg.nbh and when i went to start it up it says I can't connect to google to register because i do not have a data plan, or WIFI in the house to do it the other way.
My question is there any rom to flash or other way i can skip registration or register it anyway?
I also know no one with a T-mobile data plan....
I'm lost and pissed.... any help would be really appreciated.
I spent the whole day reading forums trying to figure this out!

Disabling mobile data (EDGE, 3G) when switching ROMs?

Here's the deal: I have no data plan, and every time I flash a new ROM data is automatically enabled. I always skip google registration so I can do it later of over wifi, but still the 3G icon shows in and outgoing traffic. This means I get shafted out of a couple of quid every time I flash a ROM. I always delete the APNs before flash a new ROM, but they always fudging come back >.< Anyone know a way to stop this from happening?
Can't you just take out your sim card?
The phone won't boot without a SIM card AFAIK.
I haven't got around to rooting and ROMing yet, but mine boots fine without a sim card, can still use over wifi etc.
Even if it didn't you can send off for free ones.
Ah, last time I tried to boot without a SIM was on 1.1, not 1.5/cupcake. Maybe they removed the restriction..thanks
Yea that is basically the only way to stop it from connecting. I imagine when you wipe and flash a new rom all the settings change back to default. Only other thing I can think of is get a prepaid sim to use for setup but that is a costly hassle.

I just don't see how it's acquiring after a wipe. I didn't have my APN settings until I went to Turkey and the phone was in roaming mode. Before that I entered them myself and they went away after a wipe. Oh well, the phone does boot without a sim, I'll just do that. Thanks for your help everyone.

How is it costly if you don't need credit.
O2: Free
Vodafone: Free
T-mobile: Free
Orange: £0.97
Virgin: Free (these were 97p when I ordered one a couple of weeks ago )
Tesco: Free
Three: free
Edit: Added Three, since I'd listed the others, the 3 offer is weird, they send you 2 sim cards which get free calls and texts between them!

Well I was speaking from what I know about us carriers, they all charge $ here for prepaid sim's here. But I wish it was like that here.
there is a method to disable the lock screen from "no sim card" with adb. You should try that, its very handy

how to activate Mytouch 3G without a data plan, even a sim card

I am about to purchase a Mytouch but according to what I have heard, you can't go pass the welcome screen without a data plan. Is that correct ? If it isn't, can anyone tell me how to activate it via Wifi using ADB like the process for G1 ?
Thanks a lot
I had the same problem when i first got my phone because i bought it on craigslist (no contract). If you know anyone that has Tmobile with a data plan u can use their sim card to activate your phone. As long as you get past signing in with google you should be good. Please Root your phone in future to avoid having this problem again.

Thanks for the reply, I thought nobody would answer this ! I knew this, but what I am asking is: How to activate it via adb or something that can be done on G1.
Thanks in advance

Have you tried following the steps outlined here?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=452316
What I gathered from that tutorial is that the 'unlocking' is simply a record added to a database in the phone, which you can get around if you root the phone and manually add it yourself. Haven't tried this though.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your replies ! The methods u guys offered are pretty much how to root a magic, means that I must have my phone activated first, lol
Thanks again
First, I do not know how to active the G2 with a SIM, or via Wifi rather than via APN. (I'm trying to do the same thing myself at this time, and still seeking the solution).
BUT... I have found a baby step. I see that when you turn on the phone, it comes up to a starter screen which shows you the green Android, and the two selections, Emergency Dial, and, Change Language. I find that if I click on the "MENU" button, it pops up a tab at the bottom of the screen that says APN. This allows me to change the APN settings. Worthless without SOME data plan, but, it might be helpful to someone trying to use an alternate provider's APN settings (along with a SIM sled / flexible PCB (sold on several sites) behind the SIM to 'unlock' use with an alternative carrier, such as AT&T - easier to borrow an iPhone SIM with a Data plan, as there are more of them). Just a thought.
Just a note, I have already changed my phone from "Donut" to "CupCake", and my goal is to go to "Root". My current HBoot is 1.33.0006 (my phone has the 32B motherboard).
i got past the welcome screen without a data plan. We have 3 mt3g in my house and we all got past the welcome screen.
I just got past the activation screen, but without any magic. The version of firmware I have on my phone (HBOOT-1.33.0006) is likely newer than the one which allowed you to skip authentication without a data plan... I suspect this maneuver / inconvenience was added to the later versions of the firmware for exactly what it tried to require of me - to verify that I am a supposedly new customer, or an existing customer with a 3G data plan.
I was able to activate the phone the first try using my TMobile SIM which has a 5.99 TMobile Web (aka T-Zones) plan on it. That SIM worked for about 1 hour with data access, then MAGICally, the data stopped working, though the phone still worked as a phone.
I read up, and discovered this likely had something to do with the Donut / Cupcake installed on the phone by TMobile. I feel that during the one hour working time, the phone somehow auto-updated something to recognize the level of my SIM / data plan was too low.
Regardless.... I borrowed a co-worker's TMobile SIM - he had NO DATA PLAN... It allowed me to authenticate the G2 via Edge / GPRS / HSDPA. I glean from this that upon receiving an UNKNOWN, but active TMobile SIM card, the phone somehow allows that SIM access to data long enough to activate the phone. But for a SIM the phone has seen before and disabled, the disabled SIM remains disabled for data.
Next step... Root the phone, and swap out the ROM to something that doesn't lock me into requiring another activation via Gmail account (I hear that Hero may be a good ROM...). Crossing my fingers...
NEED HELP - i was reading above hoping that someone would ahve the same issue as me or well to be specific my gf.
She just got a mytouch a few days ago and got it to activate fine and all without having a data plan at all. I tried using her phone and all too and it worked perfectly although today whenever she tries to make a phone call it routes her to tmobile and she can only receive texts and not send them.

There is in fact no way to activate your plan without a plan. What I did was spend $60 for a single month of the plan, activate the phone, and then cancel it, and it worked fine.
However, if you can find some way to get Cyanogen on your phone, (you can't use the 1-click root application and install the cyanogen recovery image, though without having access to the phone), the newest Cyanogen has a little button to bypass the stupid activation mode, so you'll never need a plan again.
Trust me, it took me 3 months of trying to get it working without a plan.
Edit: Oh, actually if you have a friend with a plan that has a t-mobile phone with internet access (only certain ones work, though, not the sidewinder) you can steal their sim card for a few second and activate it that way.

[Q] Unlocked Galaxy Tab International Version

Hello Folks
Would love your feed back on following questions:
1) I came across a Unlock Galaxy Tab International Version and I was wondering if I would be able to use it with a pre paid sim card to get voice and text messaging on ATT network without modifying the stock rom on it?
2) If I choose to modify the rom, what would you recommend I use. I read the newbie guide but not sure it has reached a conclusion on what works best for both voice and data?
3) If I want to be able to access data and voice, what would be the "economical" plan prepaid or postpaid that you would recommend?
If you would like link other thread that might answer my questions, your help is much appreciated
Thanks in Advance
Regards,
i own a us tmobile tab which i was able to unlock, i went out and bought an att prepaid card just to test to see if the tab was actually locked, i started with the $25 prepaid and all i can tell you is that it all the funds disappeared in less than a day, i have no clue why, i was only able to test it with 2 phone calls and about 3 tries to go online. not sure if its worth it so you might have to go with a contract but then again not sure if you want that as att is a pain in the ass and giving customers with the tab a big hassle.
I don't see why not. You can use it on both Att and Tmobile.
Tmo has prepaid service including voice and sms for about $0.13 per minute. If you pay in advance $100 you will get $0.10 per minute good for whole year.
Att likes to charge you evry month.
Hello,
Just wanted to update my original post.
1) I picked up the international version of Samsung Galaxy Tab, and it seems to have capability to join either CDMA or GSM network, which I was pleasantly surprised to find as it gives options of network providers.
2) Popped in my prepaid sims from Puretalk USA which uses ATT network but Edge Network for prepaid calling and after going into settings and picking the network, I was able to make and receive calls on it
3) The phone came unlocked, but its not rooted so not sure if I should root it?
Please advice on point 3
Regards
Rooting is not necessary unless you want full control over your Tab.
You will be able to
- remove apps and services you are not using,
- install firewall,
- make full backup of your Tab
- upgrade to a better firmware yourself etc.
Basically, you will gain ability to do whaterver you want including bricking it.
It is a matter of choice and absulutely not mandatory. Typically stock software is not bad.
