[Q] I rooted and installed a ROM, what to do if 2.2 or 2.3 comes out? - Fascinate General

rooted, installed cw recovery, installed jt's superclean 0.4 DI01 ROM, what would I do when 2.2 or 2.3 comes out? will I have to wait a couple days for a updated ROM to come out for that version of android? Or would I have to go back to stock?

Wait for a ROM... Much easier than dealing with having to go back to stock just for an ota

this. and you know very shortly after an OTA comes out, or more likely before, it will be released here in multiple flavors. so i wouldn't worry about it.

ok cool. thanks

Thanks for the info....good post. I hope its true and we see it soon. Ignore PhoenixPath he likes to shoot down anyone.... Your thread 100% belongs here.

Would it be expected to have a Froyo 2.2 rom the same day it comes out OTA if Verizon somehow keeps it from being leaked before?

I would think there would at least be a rooted version out the same day. A lot of it will depend on when it is released. If it gets released late at night or during the week, it may take a little longer than if it gets released earlier in the day or on like a Friday.

Another reason not to return to stock to get an update from Verizon: The update may prevent the phone from being rooted again by patching the security loophole that we exploit to gain root.

2.2 froyo question

Hey guys, just curious since I havent gotten a chance to use a rooted phone yet.
-When google comes out with 2.2 froyo update, are we able to update it from a rooted rom or does it have to be under stock condition?
+1. will be going from cyan to stock again when froyo comes out. but how?
You'd probably have to wait until someone post the stock rom of froyo, and then flash that.
Or flash on of the numerous stock ROMs that already exist, and get OTA like the rest of us.
Or wait for cyan for his release which I believe will be soon after the official release.
You will have to wait until either someone posts a stock 2.2 ROM that world with rooted phones or someone like cyanogen updates.
Once a different recovery is installed on the phone, the OTA system will never work again. Not even if you go back to stock.
This is a complete non issue. The stock 2.2 rom may very well be available to flash here before you recieve the ota if its a rolling release. If not it will be a close race. BTW, The ota looks for a stock officially signed recovery to install itself with, if you do not have one the ota will fail.

Just out of interest (I am not making any judgements), why do you want to go from CM to stock as opposed to a CM modded version of 2.2?
Or are you just assuming 2.2 will drop before CM has time to mod it so want to get on it asap?
ill just wait for cyano to release its froyo version...
I'd be willing to bet that the features present in 2.2 will reach a version of CM before they reach any non-rooted N1. I'm just saying... we already have some of the features currently, i.e. customizable trackball notifications.
that really just depends on when google pushes the sources of 2.2 into AOSP. so chances are that a stock 2.2 will be available sooner than a cyanogen 2.2, but it will be worth the wait

That's not true. I did a warranty replacement a while back and restored the phone to stock before sending it back. I used the SAPPIMG.zip method to restore the shipping ROM, recovery, and radio. After rebooting and setting up the phone, I was offered the OTA update and the OTA completed successfully. Being bootloader unlocked did not affect my ability to get OTA updates.
A little confusion here it seems and I will throw out my understanding. An ota will work if it does not have to access an officially signed recovery, if it does and does not find one it will fail. Once you have installed a custom recovery going back to the stock one will not help in this regard because it is no longer officially signed. 2.2 will require an officially signed recovery to install and everything I read says it will be seen, it will download, then it will fail to install. If this is incorrect than I look forward to learning more about this question as it keeps popping up over and over. I have yet to hear from any owner who was able to update from 2.0 to 2.1 after having installed a custom recovery, seems like there would have been many....

Anyone Seen the Official OTA Yet?

They usually release only to a few thousand at a time the first few days, then up to 10,000 a day a few days later or something like that, so you might not get it till next week if its truly coming out.
They also have typically announced the update in the Verizonwireless.com forums under the android\incredible section. Until you see it there I would consider it a rumor.
Im just wondering if we will even get the ota if we're rooted or if we will have to unroot first.
According to this, the update is for real:

Oops...can't post a link yet.

gonna have to unroot to get updates.
EDIT: I take this back. It depends on your version. If you have an older version of software and you have not turned off notifications you will get the notification to update. If, however you're running a froyo ROM then my understanding is that you won't see the update.
Been on all the android forums today , so far nobody has gotten the update OTA.
If it was out today vzw would confirm it like they did when we got the first update.
All I heard today was a friend of a friend got the update , RIGHT !
Verizon hasn't released the "official" OTA, but there is a leaked version that people are downloading and installing. It appears to be authentic, but since not an OTA may affect future Radio updates if you install it. Plenty of info over at the Droid Forum.

I'm really anxious to get the update, but I'm going to wait for the OTA. I updated my Eris with a leaked OTA, and I ended up regretting it. It made rooting much more difficult, and stopped me from getting the final OTA.

Do you know how it stopped you from getting the final OTA? i would think if you wiped and went back to a stock ROM the network wouldn't know the difference.

Nope. Known issue with the Eris leak.
Well, I'm not sure if if I have the OTA or not, or just part of it.
I rooted with the original instructions, then updated everything with Unrevoked 3.1. Stock ROM installed, have working WIFI tether.
Yesterday, got a message in my notification bar that a Verizon widget was available. I can now add a new Data Usage widget to my desktop, which says "Data Usage 0.0/0 MB Estimate as of N/A". Not sure why it isn't updating, but it's possible that it's related to me having a corporate rather than a personal account.
Never got a prompt to install any OTA. Tethering still works.
Hardware version 0002, Firmware version 2.1-update1
So maybe the Verizon widget was pushed by itself without the full OTA since I don't have the standard recovery?
FYI, the OTA has been halted in favor of packaging it up with the official Android FroYo v2.2 update. So instead up two OTA's we will have one OTA to rule them all!

No, the recommendation would probably be to hold your horses and wait till the OTA get's patched so we can simply upgrade without any hassle.

[Q] lets clear this up to relieve some stress...

So installed 2.2.1 on my phone via sdcard blah blah blah. That's it. Nothing else. No changes unless that update did it itself. Someone said as long as you did just that, I can still update to the official OTA 2.2. They said this doesn't block updates, changing roms and kernels does. Is this true cause if so then ill just wait till the update and not revert back to stock.
no. you will not recieve ota updates running anything except official stock rom. that would be di18 or older.

you say changing roms is what affects updates, well, what do you think you did by flashing 2.2?
that is changing the rom!
Relax, take a deep breath, and stop making threads.
If your phone works fine now, go with it. The official update will be leaked here too, and you will be able to flash it the same way you flashed DK28.
Will you be able to get it OTA? Possibly, but Sprint rolls everything out slowly. I got my phone 2 weeks ago and it claimed I was on the newest version: DG27! Obviously DI18 was out but their OTA system is flaky at best.
If you want to go back to being part of the masses, go read the thread about how to Odin back to stock and wait patiently for Sprint to update you.
If you want the latest and greatest, stick with DK28 and flash the new version when it comes out.
Simple as that.

Oh well shi*. I didn't even think about that. Yeah ill just wait till the official version comes out download.it and flsh it. Haha sweet then my phone will be official again no worries! Genius! God I'm an idiot....

Did your phone eventually update itself? If so how long did it take for the phone to figure out it needed to update?

NO it didn't i just found the link to the "official" update and downloaded it, flashed it and thats it. chances are, the ACTUAL leaked version will be able to download before the OTA actually hits.

When I first got the epic my first phone was on dg27 and after 2 days still wouldn't update so I did it myself with odin. I took it back cause I felt maybe there was something wrong since it wouldn't update itself. The one I have now came with di18 on it. Why do some phones not update themselves?

It has nothing to do with the phone. The OTA system rolls out slowly across the country. Also, the function to check for updates seems to not actually check the main server, but rather waits for updates to be pushed to it. This push could take a few days even if your area is live for the update.
Just another reason to flash from our wonderful community and ignore their OTA updates. Also, a terrible reason to return a phone...
Are you saying that if I waited long enough it might have updated itself? I called sprint tech and explained to them that I was two updates behind and they said it should have updated by now and that it must have an issue. So he said take it back to where I got it and he would put a note in my acct. That the phone was defective. So I played with it that night and flashed the update to it and rooted it just to learn.

Hello guys,
I rooted my fascinate and installed(?) DJ05.
and I've heard that 2.2 coming soon, will my phone get 2.2 automatically when it's available or do I have to go back to DI01 to get the update?
Thanks!!

You'll need to restore all the bloat. From what I've read, the update system checks for all that crap to verify the phone before doing the update. Version shouldn't matter.
The best thing you can do is wait. The dev's will have it rooted and deodexed within hours of release then posted here.

Merge just got 2.3.4 (build 3.05.573.1), Shift still on 2.3.3

I wonder if this Merge update has the same bugs our 2.3.3 Evo Shift update from Sprint has like the major problem with the Sense reloading. If not, I hope that Sprint will follow very soon if this update if it doesn't have any major bugs.
Any Sprint insider info out there on if the Shift will be getting this 2.3.4 version too??? Especially if it fixes the Sense reloading issue.
What you should do is root your phone ASAP and NOT accept any OTA from HTC/Sprint while you still can. If you want to run Sense there are many Sense based ROMs you can flash.

I will never again accept an ota update. That was the worst month and a half. The phone is running great now though. Try one of the sense based roms if you want to stick with sense.

Just say no to OTA's . When and IF the Shift gets another update hopefully people have learned their lesson. Don't accept OTA's. If your already rooted stay that way. Wait for updates to be worked on by the Dev's.

Just an FYI:
The last time there was a major OTA update for the Shift, I posted a working, rooted version of the update within four hours of us getting the zip file. I'm pretty sure we had a rooted Gingerbread Sense ROM available before the official update was available OTA for most of you.
I have no idea why anyone with an interest in keeping root access would ever accept an OTA update from Sprint.

Yes, many n00bz accepted the ota, but the largest group got a new phone, either upgraded or got a replacement, and it came with the ota. I had to take my phone back and that's what happened to me. With the help of otaking and scaryghoul, I got my root back, and I am now rocking miui thanks to you
