What if your phone could have a front-facing camera without actually having one? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I've been thinking about what was missing in our HD2s.. finally i found it!
its this >> AWESOME <<

I wonder if they would make such a thing for our HD2s.. that would be very cool!
we would have a face-front video chat Skype or Fring..
Sharing is caring.

To bad I couldn't get the one I made that nice looking!!

wait... you made one right?
atleast share with us your idea.. how you made it.. and how it looks like, pictures?

The title of this thread was so confusing, I had to click on it. But you're right, that's actually a good idea! What would be cooler is if it was imbedded in a case, so that it could just flip out when needed... I have the "Body Glove" that has the kickstand, but it'd be neat to have the mirror flip out and allow iphone-like skype... although, not sure I'd ever use it.

i did make one. made it out of balsa wood and used two mirrors off a small disco ball. it took me a few trys of getting the mirrors angles right but did get it. i wish i could show some pictures but its gone, thats what i get for leaving it out where my kids ( and by kids, i mean my cats) got to it. you could make one too. with some time, and more time, and some glue and sharpe knife you too could have one. balsa wood is lite and easy to carve. you can get little mirrors and the wood at any craft or hobby shop. all you need to do is carve two pieces of wood to fit on top of the phone snug and have two places for the mirros to sit in the wood, hardest part is getting the angles right so you can hold the phone or put in a cradle and sit back and chat away. good luck if some-one trys. if you do, lets see it. ill be making another one, when its done i will have pics for yall.

That is one helluva idea there buddy. I too many months ago thought about making one like this but never got around to it....probably because I would never use it. But the mirror built into a case is an idea someone should work with.

I agree, if this was built into a case, that would be awesome. Heck, this might be a better video chatting experience than with a real front camera as you won't need to use that vga crap lol.

Didn't notice this before. Doesn't look like something they will come out with soon though. They're still looking for a manufacturer from what I've read. Wish all these companies would hurry up with the solution for phones without front facing cameras. This one took a great sleek approach to it. I have actually ordered the IseeU and it's suppose to take a while to ship, but if it doesn't ship I'll just cancel it and wait it out for this one.

UPDATE
Ordered the Iseeu and as it turns out it doesn't exactly work for the HD2 (duh). The angle the clip is at and the mirrors aren't made to work correctly on the HD2. Hopefully this prevents other people from ordering one in hopes of it working on the hd2.

Wouldn't the image show up flipped upside down? Just thinking about the angles, it doesn't look like it would work correctly without an inverting lens

I wondered how long it would be before someone spotted that!

Well actually, it looks like the back of the clip is acting as the third mirror, which in essence would make the end image the right way up.
Very interesting concept though, but would benefit from being built into a case. Can you imagine having to dig this out of a pocket everytime you wanted to use it?? I'd lose it way before I had the chance to use it!!!

Dunno if I`m actually right but... the first one flips it once, the second one flips it back. There`s no need for any third mirror...

Doesn't matter. With tango you can flip the image around. If you touch the switch camera onscreen, it will flip the image. It's meant to switch from the Rear camera to the front, but on the HD2 it just flips the image. I want a mirror. I hope someone comes out with one for the HD2

I'll make some !
OK, my years of trolling have ended. I'll throw some things together in the next 5-7 days and post my results/pics.
I have the ability to mold small run plastics. I'm even thinking simple heat formed mirrored acrylic/poly sheet. Depending on the size of reflective surface needed I think I have a way to integrate it into a case and have it simply pop/slide up.
Small run <100 shouldn’t be a problem. Technology/New phones are released so quickly it's just not cost effective to produce something like this in mass.
Yes, other than using a prism the image will be upside down. As long as Tango can flip image I don't see a problem.

Upskirt Shots inside --> X10 Disassembled

Hi Everyone,
I was a little bored of waiting for root on my mobile.
So I decided to flush my warranty and rip that ***** apart
Screws where taken out very fast.
But the hole thing was additionally clipped all around.
I started from top, where a credit card had enough space to get between the housing parts.
Then I moved once around an the back was taken off...
To disassemble the remaining parts was piece of cake.
I didn't manage to split the Frontwindow and Display, so I left it.
At least also to not get any dust underneath.
While it was open, I decided to de-solder the white keypad lightning and resoldered it with amber coloured LEDs, to match the phone even more with my cars interior light.
Kind regards,
McK
P.S.: The pictures were taken at full 8mpix. If anyone can provide some webspace, I'd send 'em to him. But I dislike to use freehosters, so pls don't point me at 'em.

Tripod is a word generally used to refer to a three-legged object, generally one used as a platform of some sort, and comes from the Greek tripous, meaning "three feet".
You have made a 'ghetto' base or 'ghetto' dock.
If you used any duct tape at all, that will also change your device from 'ghetto' to 'redneck' dock.
Now that you have be schooled.. I am gonna finish my beer and wipe the laughter tears outta my eyes. Good show man..
Just as a tip though, on the serious, I was at Walmart and picked up a black plastic business card holder, a little bit of single sided craft felt and cut the felt to fit inside the card holder and made a nice looking base/dock.

So, I had a dream last night.. why not put clay in the opening of the hole to make a soft seating surface and to grip the phone. Then make 4 slits in the bottom of the 'tripod' to worm some velcro straps through.. whala.. tripod to arm strap mount to watch movies while jogging!!
Are you going to post a demo vid?

There were no instructions to read. You simply said to buy a case, no links or anything.
My guess is that he has a case that does not have a cutout for the hardware keyboard on the sides (hard to tell from the video, but it didn't look like it). Normally this is thought of as a poor design choice since that means it interferes with the keyboard while open (if you flick the phone open, it may not lay flat). If the case is sufficiently thin though, you can probably wedge the case edge against the edge of the keyboard, effectively holding it in place. Just my guess though.
I bet you're totally right, a case without a cutout and case wall is thin enough to wedge in the space behind the back of screen. That is why he repeated, "push up, push up".

And here I thought someone found a new (real) solution...
it is a solution. You just need the 3 dollar case and push up and it wont become loose when you text on the bed.
Here is the link to the case the OP has (taken from his YouTube video):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0045EI356/
Be warned, your mileage may vary with purchasing this case. There is a really long thread in the Accessories forum about this exact one from Amazon. It seems like some of the people who bought it received cases with the cutout and others received cases that didn't have it. Most likely depends on which vendor you buy from and what they have stocked (you'll notice there are currently 18 different vendors). Notice, even in the pictures on Amazon, the cutout is there...
I actually bought this case a long time ago when that thread started. Mine has the cutouts. Great case for cheap (and I actually wanted one with the cutouts so I got lucky).
He's got a link on his you tube page to buy the case, but look at this picture taken from his video it looks like his middle finger is on the other side holding the screen up, and keeping it from opening,Is this a scam to sell more cases???? You be the judge.

I only said buy the case because this particular case makes the screen stay up. I think is because of the clamps they get stuck. Ill make another video
I also have to wonder -- if you're pushing hard enough to wedge the case behind the raised part of the keyboard, are you also putting too much stress on the hinge mechanism?

You must work at a body shop or on cars as a hobby. That just screams it to me. I have plenty of gearhead friends that do the same type of thing. Nice work btw! The best I can do is change oil and brake pads on a good day lol! I did just redo the gasket on my oil pan and it wasn't too bad plus changed one of my O2 sensors. That was a royal pain without the proper wrench.... anyways, sorry to ramble on good work! Might have to steal that idea. Ever think of doing the same to the phone bezel so it would match? I would also like to do the trim piece but it would be tricky to do it without touching anything else, and I don't see myself taking it off.

That is straight G bro. I'm going to do that too because the clown that I got the phone from surface scrated the hell out of the back. I do keep a velcro patch on the back so I can stick it the my center consel it keeps it from getting sratched anymore too.

You'd have to be EXTREMELY careful though.

basically wet sanded it with the sandpaper in the order described and used eagle one nano wheel polish.
Wow that looks like. Kind of too shiny for me but I know a lot of people that would love this though.
Word. I'm gonna hit mine up when I get paid and take to a metal engraving place that does zippos or trophies and whatnot. Will post some pics when I have the finished product. Not exactly sure what design or layout I'm gonna go with but its gonna combine the brushed finish and polished finish. 'Til next time.

I remember someone talked about engraving their battery cover but they either never did or never posted back about it. Sounds cool though. Let us know...

you should have finished it off with wetsanding with 4000 and then polished it with a rotating cloth and some oil (but not to intence, the oil can make the metal dark and ugly if u let it heat up too much from the friction)
i polished a piece of metal like that one time, made it clearer than my bathroom mirror
but still nice work

[Q] fingerprint reader slanted/broken in all devices?

Hi, is it just me or does the fingerprint reader seem broken/slanted/has a factory problem on all atrixes?
I didn't like the one I had, when back to att and told them that I want to check the display unit and it had the same issue, I asked if it's possible to check a third device to make sure and even the third device (new, out of the box) had the same thing...

i didn't even realize that until now.
feels fine to me and i'm sure there is some reasoning behind it
I've seen it mentioned before. Not sure how prevalent it is, but mine is not like that. Not sure if it's just a defective design or quality control issues...
Admittedly, mine is not perfectly straight but it's not something that I would have noticed if someone hadn't mentioned it or asked me to look.
Not every atrix is like this. I've been through a few and the one I have right now is lined up correctly.
Most also have an issue with the edges on the sides of the device not lining up. The left side is more flush with the glass than the right side.
Also, volume rocker is very loose on some of them (my current has this problem)
Definitely some build quality issues. I wouldn't bother returning your Atrix for something so minor, especially when the new one you get will probably have the same problem, and perhaps more problems.
It isn't "broken", that whole portion is the power button, and as such has some play to it. Since the read head is embedded in the button, it has to accommodate the connection which is applying torsion and is causing the tilt. This is fairly common with any button that has embedded components.

There's always a reasoning behind something. In this case, sloppy assembly comes to mind.
Mine is flush and won't tilt that far even if I try and make it.
Same issue here ... do I need to return it? It works fine though ...

Answered your own question.
OP: You must have asperbergers to notice and worry about something so small and mundane.
If they all have it, and they all seem to work, then why the **** would you say that it's broken? Maybe, JUST MAYBE, it was designed like that!
Question is what will happen after a couple of months down the road ? I don't want to get refurbished unit, right now I can trade in for new unit ....
It doesn't seem to be loose though ...
My first atrix's button seemed pretty solid but it was rebooting by itself so I exchanged it. The new ones button has a little give but works fine.

Mine is perfect.
Very solid too.

It's absolutely normal to have that tilt because, first of all, it's a button and all buttons will have some play, and second, the fingerprint scanner inside uses a ribbon cable to transmit the data and it just so happens that the cable attaches to the side that is lower. So, the reason it is "seated" like that is because the ribbon cable is sort of holding it down a little tighter than the other side which is being help up by the button mechanism.
You can see the cable here:

Mine is like that, but a little worse, the whole button seems recessed as well as slanted. My coworker's phone is perfect. button is flush on all sides. Mine started out flush and has deteriorated. I'm watching it for another week, and if it continues to get worse i'll decide what to do.
It also seems my button will stick in now and then, causing issues waking the phone up.
I didn't return the device and I don't think I will ... I was just surpriced that all 3 devices have the same issue, so I wanted to check with you guys and see if it's "meant to be" like that and motorola designed it like that or if it's just the batch that my area's att store got

lol, well, I can't deny that I have some social awkwardness, but I don't think I'm that bad, I think that it's normal to check every little detail of something that expensive ... for the record, I don't have an SSN (I had to pay $500 deposit) and English isn't my first language, I could have used the word "broken" wrong.

Don't feel too bad. I usually find a few things "wrong" with everything I purchase, it's almost unavoidable. The best you can do is figure out what you can live with.
wow mine looks like that too!
Mine works just fine. My wife hates it because now she can't play with my phone.

Mine is like that too. I've had my phone for 2 weeks and just noticed yesterday. I thought it was broken, but after finding this thread I'm fine with it. It does not feel weird, click weird, or ever stick. After seeing the photo a few posts above re: the ribbon cable, it makes complete sense.
Maybe the guys who have Atrixes (Atrices? lol) with flush buttons are the ones with defective units, LOL

Eheh my wife too
