[Q] lost all sms. also was random restarting today. bad battery? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello everybody my name is brad
so last week my battery seemed to be draining quickly on sat. was going to go trade battery on Monday but everything seemed back to normal. then today i noticed random restarts.
later in afternoon the messaging app would go directly to compose a blank message with no recipient, when hitting the back button it would then just directly back to home screen. i app killed it, force stopped it all kinds of stuff. then after restarting all my messages were gone except the ones on sim card! yeah tmobile was a sheet load of help, not. Anyway i assume the messages are permanently gone. for future problems what is best way to back up sms? free app preferably.
so to end this, think its a bad battery or internal memory? bad battery? and where are sms messages stored, internal or sdcard?
oh and one last thing. only thing i installed recently was the new mail app.
thanks - brad

are you rooted?

Best way to backup is an app in the Market called SMS backup and restore. Backs up to SD card.
As far as the reboots, have you tried turning USB debugging on? That seems to have helped some people with the issue.
Here's a shot of the app:

SMS program that will show full thread?

The built in messaging in WM only shows so many messages per page. You have to keep clicking on the "older" link to keep moving through the messages. So I'm wondering if there are any SMS managers, etc. that will show the entire thread on one page. Also, show the time along with the date?
I too would like to know this answer for our kaisers and tilt 2's. However, i am suspecting it would slow things down a bit, but am willing to see what the difference is. Also the date and time would be nice
mine shows the date and time i recieved my text. not the entire thread though. i always delete my messages anyways. though it would be cool to see the whole thing on one page.

thats what i m looking for as well, the SMS client and build in dialer are the only cons for me with this phone
Mine shows the time on some, and the date on others, but never both on all messages. Makes no sense to me
not sure if this is what you were trying to see but if you go in to the contact individually it shows your entire conversation =)

Try resco contact manager. It incorporates nicely but I don't think it will be what you completely want because the rhodium is a nice device with great graphics. For wm 6.1 it was a great addition, but check it out.
Hope this helps.
Yeah, the date and time show up if it is the SMS was received in the current day. The problem is if you backup your phone and then restore it, like through myphone.microsoft.com, it loses track of the order.
The HTC version does show the whole thread at once, with dates and times but you can't export the thread like you can in the WM threading, which I do by just doing a select all, copy, paste to word, save.
I guess what I'm really trying to get at, is the ability to archive conversations as it appears in threading mode.

Backup SMS

It is impossible to back up all of my sms with an app (i have over 50k sms) so how can i manually take them off of my phone and put them back on the phone when i flash a new rom?
Most of the messages are from my girlfriend and DO NOT want to loose them, its the only thing i car about on my phone...but its so damn slow and i would like a new rom, the one i have now is from 9 months ago
With SMS Backup +, you can send your texts to a specified folder/label in a Gmail account, and restore them at a later time.

i have 50k messages do you know how long that would take? plus i already said that it is impossible with any app.....the phone just freezes after a little bit cause i have a crappy rom on it
Ah, I missed the k part in there, heh. Yeah, I have no idea how you can manually do it (if it's possible I guess).
...more googling for me....YAY
Or just grow up and delete most of them

I have a ton of texts from my son in basic training that are important to me (whenever I start missing him I just go back and read them). If you're using CM6 or AOSP you can just back them up with Titanium Backup and restore the SMS messages. Today I switched from CM6 to LiquidSence and that method didnt work. I installed SMS Backup & Restore from the market and was able to restore all of my son's texts.
SMS B&R has a "no duplicates" feature. It will check to see which ones have already been restored and will pick up where it left off if your phone freezes.
I get it, it will take a long time. But if your messages are as important to you as mine are to me, it's worth it.

Hi, do us all a favor and keep your ****ty comments to your self. It is apparent that you have no one in your life that cares about you or you care about them. You will be lucky if your in box hits 10 by the end of the month.
If incoming messages are sign of importance, I'm right up there. I get a couple hundred a day, but most get deleted when their usefulness expires.
Your phone may be slow because it needs to be purged.
Handcent has online storage for donators I believe....
thats just it....the rom i have is a beta (didnt know that at the time) so it is really buggy now i get force close messages on almost everything i try and do....i just need a fresh rom and the ability to take the sms off manually and place them on a new rom

All jokes aside, you'll do yourself a BIG favor by not taking comments/posts personally. Getting worked up over something online doesn't do anyone any good (besides the entertainment value 3rd parties receive from it ), especially yourself.
Onto the actual topic now: As trindy said try using SMS Backup & Restore. It should do the job you need - should being the operative word here because I've never heard of anyone backing up over a few thousand messages...let alone 50,000
Hope it works out for ya

MessageCS exceeding threshold?

Ok I have an HTC G2 rooted on virtuous ROM.
For some reason my handcent has been very sluggish
And borderline DEAD lately.
I don't know exactly what's going on, I haven't done anything different now from any other time but its quite annoying.
I installed watch dog to see if maybe something was eating up all my CPU and I just got an alert today that MessageCS is exceeding the cpu threshold. Hopefull someone can help.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
sheesh no one got any ideas or help?
Ah yes I posted about something similar in the Virtuous Unity thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15073041&postcount=884
With me it was something to do with syncing my HTC Sense account to the phone, and removing it from the Accounts & Sync list got rid of the issue.
whats odd is i do not have the HTC Sense account created.
look here:

}
this is how my accounts and sync options look.
maybe its the HTC facebook?
also, my handcent app seems to keep force closing and lagging heavily.
this could be another reason....
Yeah I'm not really sure what's causing your MessageCS process to hog the CPU. The process is normally associated with syncing with the SMS database so if you're not really syncing it with anything, you could just try freezing the process with AntTek App Manager Root or the paid version of Titanium.
Alternatively, it's possible that you have some kind of corruption in the SMS database. I might try something like backing up all the sms, and then wiping the database. If the SMS database is causing the problem, the MessageCS process shouldn't misbehave after the wipe.
After that, I'd try restoring my messages. Something like "SMS Backup and Restore" can do this, but it won't backup any MMS. I'm not sure if Handcent has this function, but GO SMS can backup both SMS and MMS I think.
Good luck.

Unusually high battery usage with Textplus

Hi,
I've recently been having an issue with Textplus consuming a lot of battery power on my Nexus 4 (pics attached at the end). I was on stock rooted 4.4.2 while having the issue, then installed CM11 on hells-core, hoping a reformat and reinstall during the process would fix the issue.
Is this normal for Textplus on 4.4.2? I'm definitely not using it more than other apps, but I do use it for both regular and free texts. It stays in the background, and I send texts a few times a day.
I'm also unable to mark regular texts in Textplus as read, and in my phone's settings the app can't be marked as the default SMS app. To mark texts as read I need to run hangouts.
I would like to continue using this app, but as it stands it doesn't seem worth it. Does anyone here have a similar issue with the app?

Looks like you need to get another similar app. Try sending an email to the developer and/or check their website to see if they have a support page.

Get app ops starter from the play store. In it turn off location for text plus

Thank you, I just sent them an email with the issue. Also @jd1639, I was thinking it had to do with location requests, I'll download that and let you know.

Unwanted popup

My phone is stock, no changes other than a few apps have been disabled.
I am getting an unwanted popup after I receive a call. It wants me to install Instagram, or another program. I have scanned with Malwarebytes but it finds no viruses.
Any help in getting rid of this appreciated. Please see the attachment.
Thanks.

Do you have ES File Explorer (think I see it in the background)? Try uninstalling that app and see if the ads persist. ES File Explorer may be presenting adverts and popups.
Thanks, but that did not work. Onto the next guess!
are you using a custom launcher? some of them provide ads on your ohone.. also try removing any apps that are known for showing popups
Chinese apps tend to have overlays like that, especially those cleaning/boosting apps. Get rid of those and see.
When it pops up, do you see anything more in the expanded notification bar? If yes, then press and hold on it and tap on "app info/detail". From there you can see which app is displaying these pop ups and disable notifications.
Thanks, Using ADW. Removed and still there.
Don't have any of those, but good guess.
No way to expand the notification nor any way to get more information. Talked to Motorola support and they had me clean the cache and that did nothing either.
Last case resort, start uninstalling apps one by one with the newest one first. When the pop ups stop, you've found the problem.

Prior to using the last resort method provided by riggerman, you can view how much data/wifi each app is using that is currently installed on your device. This can be done by navigating to network info in your settings. Then simply compare that data to which app is eating up your memory at the time of the pop up. A more in depth method would to use an app that is designed to gather in depth data on installed apps specifically for the user, such an app would be Android Addon Detector available in the Play Store (link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.denper.addonsdetector). I wont write up the way to do it cause I don't have that kind of time at the moment, and it'll do you good to teach yourself given the internet and the app FAQ and developers site because knowledge is power, and knowledge also helps to quickly deal with little piece of bull**** that land on your path in life, such as annoying popups
Removed 2 backup apps and seems to have gone away, thanks.
Had the same popup problem. I said STOP in response it has gone away.
