[POLL] What is your Archos device? - Gen8 General

What is your primary Achros Gen8 device? Someone started a regular thread already, but it wasn't a poll thread.

None as i had returned my 7" Home Internet Tablet and got a Huawei Ideos S7 instead.

Don't be a Archos hater, its always good to remain friends after a bad relationship, right? For the kids? (=

Interesting to see that 101 have more owners than 70 in the poll. Was expecting it the other way around.

I have an iPad (bought prior to my Archos 70) and its nice for what it is, but I like how I can easily handle my A70.

Yeah, the size of an ipad/10inch is pretty much almost like a netbook. Nice, but not very wieldy. I think the 7 inch is the sweet spot for the balance of size and portability, at least for me.

Loving my Archos70! Haven't played much with the iPad but sharing apps between my Droid and the A70 is awesome and can't help but love the options I'm given with AndroidOS.
Had a PandigitalNovel (White) before this which found was a sweet little device, but resistive touch screen/Android 2.0ish/heavy build gave way to me buying the A70!

This is my first Android/tablet toy and i love it.
I've done my homework before baying and I'm satisfied with my device. Yes, there were some delays (shipping, froyo) but it gave me more time to think about it. It's the bigest bang for the money. I don't like when people are comparing gen8 with iPad/Galaxy tab, those are products in their own class (price and build quality).

Proud to be one of the few with the smaller archos devices (32)

Owner of an archos 70!
Suprised to see more 101 than 70 owners, the 101 is too unwieldy IMO.

A lot of people are probably primarily using it to replace a netbook or to watch movies/read books, Thedudesam. Which I can kinda understand a bit.

I agree.. with that size, you'd probably be using it for movies or maybe a netbook replacement if you use it with a keyboard and stand.

I have an 8G A70 and a 16G A101. The A101 will almost always be at home. The A70 I'll carry around. I'll experiment with the A70 before I change the A101.

Technically the Home Tablet wouldn't count since its not in the poll and its not an A8 device like the rest of the systems in this branch of the forum. As you can see in the chart linked below they are quite different systems:

Edit: darn it will not let me post links yet. Guess anyone that wants to see the differences will need to browse to Archos website, click on the Archos 70 under Android tablets, and then click on the home tablet vs Internet tablet green bar.

Quite right. The A7HT is a Gen7 device, not Gen8. However, I think he maybe just worded that wrong, as he said "Home Internet Tablet", which there have been no devices that carry both the "Home" and "Internet" naming convention.

Actually, I'm betting he got both items at a USA Best Buy. I have seen BB advertise the Gen7 as the "Archos Home Internet Tablet" before. In fact, BB did so again in this week's sale advertisement. And I know they carry the Huawei as I've played with it there.
On a side note, if I was comparing the Gen 7 to the Huawei, I would get the Huawei as well. It is actually quite responsive for a resistive screen device, and it is a pretty good device at the price level it sells for. It can take a sim card and be a giant phone, and it is also the only tablet aside from Archos that I know of with a built in kick stand.

Ive got the 101 with 2.2 but Im getting ready to sell it off. Im just not happy with it and even IF custom ROMs and perm rooting happens, the limitation of the app storage and 256 RAM is a killer for me. I thought it would perform ok and for some I guess it does but it isnt living up to me standards.
Maybe the G-Tab or Adam will be better

Xoom, flyer or ipad 2?

I am interested in buying a tablet come the next few months. I'm not really after spending a fortune on one so the 3d LG is put of the question at a expected 850 pound. The 2 I'm looking at are either HTC flyer and the mototola xoom. I am a little disappointed with the HTC specs single core was not what I had in mind. The question is should I buy the xoom at a estemated 430pound or get the cheaper HTC it or wait for ipad 2.
The tablet would mainly be used got uni work and reading up on course material etc. Also some "games " and other apps. I am in the market for an android one preferably, not the Playbook or something similar.
Any advice would be brilliant, thanks.

Its not single core, its a dual core tegra 2.

I personally am getting the wifi Xoom. It hits my price point, and is something that I need. I travel a lot, and it is more portable than my Vaio.
I'm in college also, so the ebook reader is nice. I hate reading ebooks in half of my screen... I like the snap feature of win 7, but would rather have something dedicated if I don't have a hard copy.
The only reason I wouldn't get the Xoom is if the bootloader is locked. I'm not really interested in modifying the Xoom, because from what I've seen the OS looks great, but I just won't support closing down an open system.
I saw it was single core snapdragon 1.5

Yea it's a single core 1.5
Yeh that's what I was thinking, honeycomb looks great along with tegra 2 the e book reader. If it foes come in around the 400 pound mark I will happily get one and ignore the ipad
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Of those three? The Xoom. It has a higher screen resolution than the others (most accounts say that the iPad 2 will get no boost in resolution), and I think Honeycomb is visually more interesting than HTC Sense or iOS.
Yeh I'm pretty interested to see honey comb. I like the sense and its ment to be integrated well into the HTC tab but the lack of dual core 3.0 dosent make it future proof in my opinion. Rather pay more the more powerful tablet that will rub future versions of honey comb.

Right, the Xoom has a dual core 1Ghz Tegra 2, the Flyer has a single core 1.5Ghz Snapdragon. I thought the original post said the Xoom had a single core.
Anyhow, two very different devices that will sell for similar prices (from what I've seen so far, the Fly is $780?)
Shrug, Xoom all the way for me, no matter how much I like HTC products, they just fell short with the Flyer.
Smaller screen with lower resolution and no HDMI out. No thanks!
The one thing I DO like about the Flyer is integrated OnLive, but I'm hoping that eventually makes it out to other Android tablets as well. I'm not an OnLive subscriber, but if their catalog increases enough during the year, I very well could be.

I've been using OnLive since release. It's neat, and I think it has a future, only if they can get first-run games on it. I don't want to play games that are a few years old, I want a release day game to play. I have yet to find a game I like that I haven't already played to death on it.
But yeah, hopefully it will come to all Android's in the future and this is just a flagship.
Yeh agreed the cloud services seem very nice. But as the last guy said the lack of hardware is disappointing. I'm hoping the prices of the xoom sent ridiculous as at the end of the day its a tablet not a PC. Looking forward to finding the release date for it, hoping March mabey early April if the states are "ment " to be getting it end of this month

The Xoom ... of course
iPad 2.
The iPad was a pretty decent tablet, and the Flyer is a bit too small for my taste. I would have considered the Xoom, if it weren't for the ridiculous pricing option. I mean, when an Apple product is more economical than your device , you know you have done something wrong...
You have the right price for the xoom? 600 $ wifi version, lines up correctly with the 32 gb ipad 32gb .

This.
32GB Wifi-only iPad = $600
32GB Wifi-only Xoom = $600
Clearly thats a 2nd gen device vs a first-gen device, but still it shows the pricepoint is perfectly in line with the market. And with the Xoom, you're getting a true tablet OS and much more powerful hardware.
I am confused with this thread because sizes are different, First of all the user should decided which size tablet to use.
Flyer : 7''
Others : 10''
Also I wonder why Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is not listed in this comparison
All I want to say is that after having the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS... the XOOM is well worth every penny. I feel that 500$ is overpriced for an iPad, but 800$ is not overpriced for a XOOM, though I don't want 3G since I have an EVO and look forward to the even cheaper 600$ WiFi XOOM.
The reason is flash. Before all you apple blossoms sigh, hear me out. I loved my iPhone, since I was previously using WinMo devices for personal use. I didn't like the Walled Garden, or being tied to iTunes, but overall I liked the device. However, I was constantly reminded that the phone was essentially useless when trying to use it outside of my home. When I was out I could never find up to date information on restaurants if they had flash websites. I recall having to call nearly a dozen Cold Stone Creamery's because the official website was flash, and the stores around me on Google Maps were out of business.
Another instance in the months before I bought the EVO was when I was trying to find some information about Fuddruckers. There are many more cases that I can't recall details of, but it was a royal pain in the ass. The fact of the matter is that flash is here to stay, and any device that claims web-browsing really needs to have at least a limited flash capability. I would love to know if anyone can honestly say they did any serious web-browsing on an iPad for an entire day without running into something they couldn't do or view. Also, MOBILE SITES ARE NOT DO NOT LET IT OFF THE HOOK.
As you can see, the issue sort of gets to me. I keep wanting to shake iPad users for spending 500$ on a device that is missing basic functionality. Flash has been here for 15 years and has been integral to a rich web experience for at least half that time.
So.. XOOM. My problem with the flyer is that I'm SICK of seeing Android 2.2 tablets. Considering the veritable failure of the Samsung Galaxy Tab, I am shocked that HTC would make such a choice. They are only further adding to the consumer confusion about Android by releasing another tablet with an OS that is crap for a tablet. Though on another hand, I hope that it does well enough to inspire other manufacturers to install digitizers on their devices. The one thing the digital age has robbed from me is the ability to doodle. I don't want all these damn games, just give me a stylus and digitizer so I can draw when I'm bored. I read questionablecontent religiously and have been looking for a way to try making a webcomic without having to actually invest in a wacom tablet.
I've got an iPad, and web browsing is a constant frustration that makes me want to toss it. Honestly, I can't stand it. My wife uses it for netflix, and that's all it has been relegated to lately. Watching videos we download or stream via netflix, and it's overpriced for that.
Even on sites with HTML 5, they don't work 100%. I've had issues shopping on it. I can select an item, add it to my shopping cart, but when it came time to choose a color or another option, crash...then crash again, and again. Pain in the arse. My EVO browses the internet far far better than my $600 iPad.
As for the Flyer, it's getting updated to Honeycomb. Why it isn't shipping with it, who the hell knows, but it's otherwise too similar to the Tab.
If you want a rockin device with a promise to be upgraded to Honeycomb, check out the Notion Ink Adam. Similar to the flyer, but with a larger screen and only $425 shipped, if you manage to become one of the lucky few allowed to pre-order it.

[Q] Would you still advise buying the tab ?

There are 2-3 weeks before all the major tablets launch and I am considering buying the tab. I want a 7 inch so if i wait ill go for the flyer. But I was wondering if it is still worth paying $600 for the device. The new tablets will launch for $1000-120o so please advice me as to whether I should get the tab or wait ?
Just to add I currently have an HD7 as my primary phone and have been using the Desire HD as my backup phone and I will sell the desire hd to buy the galaxy tab. Plz consider this when advising. Thanks
Well, in the computer world there is always something coming around the corner that is better, faster and/or cheaper. That's just the nature of technology.
But, the Galaxy tab is great for me. I bought mine when they first became available in the states for $550 off contract. You can find them now for $500 off contract. To me the 7" size is a better choice then the 10" that most of the new hot tabs have. 7" is better for holding in your hand for ebook reading. The SGT is about half the weight of the iPad and Xoom which makes a huge difference.
The Galaxy tab has flash video for web but the iPad and Xoom do not.
From an ease of use and slickness the SGT runs behind the iPad but ahead of Honeycomb tablets like Xoom (read the Xoom reviews; people like the look of Honeycomb but they admit that it is not as easy to use as android 2.2).
If you are hooked on the 7" size like I am then you might consider the Dell Streak 7 which adds 4g to the mix.
As far as which provider to go with, I think one of the GSM providers (ATT or TMobile) would be better than the CDMA providers (Sprint or Verizon) as the CDMA tabs seem more locked down and have less development going on.
I would wait at this point - Samsung is suppose to be coming out with 8" Honeycomb tablet this summer.
If you can find one used or on sale
at a great price its fine for web browsing and email
and it's the only 7" capable phone out too, if you don't mind flashing it.
Just dont let anyone see you using it as a phone
Sorry is costing me $600 slight typo
Even though I returned my Tab, I'd still heartily recommend one to people looking for a great Tablet.
For me, it was TMobile winding me up that made my decision for me.
Awesome device, carriers did their best to make it fail it appears.
But some 10buck data plans? And the price it's going for atm? Well worth it I'd say. Seems everyone's pushing now for larger than 7inch devices, but the form factor is perfect. It's still luggable around (pocket requirements, but it's doable). Great screen, VERY decent sound compared to other tablets.
Sure, there's 3.0 tablets, but... Don't know. I think the Tab running 2.2 should be renamed 'Tab Classic' It's still very good, no matter what else comes after it.
I think now $500 new off contract and $400 used would be a nicer price?
No reason to rush into a Galaxy Tab with so many options coming unless its a good deal,
except maybe since it has a phone, I'd bet it will be the last 7"+ device with one.
YES
I just bought mine a week ago....luv it gave my ipad to my girlfriend ...I didnt realize how much i missed flash...7 inch is perfect for e reading ...portability is better ....10 inch to me is rather wide not easy to handle....
I have had the Tab for about a month and love it. I played with the iPad regularly since my girlfriend has one, but I consistantly came away with the Tab over iPad for 4 main reasons:
1- I much prefer 7" to 10" inch for mobility, one hand holding, ability to put in a pocket, etc.
2- I had a jailbroken iPhone and got rid of it when the original Droid came out. I still have a DroidX as my main phone due to the fact that I much prefer Android to Apple for the interface, customization, and app selection. Yes, iTunes has many apps and iPad has many tablet apps, but from experience, I found that many apps were 57 versions of the same thing, just with a different sports team branding or something, and I have yet to be unable to find a good Android app for any of my needs.
3- Even compared to another Android tablet like the Xoom, the ease of typing on a Tab is great. Granted, I have larger hands than most, but I can thumb type in portrait or landscape at about 35 words per minute, not too far behind my keyboard speed.
4- Last but not least, I use my Tab for everything. AllShare lets me use it as a remote to stream from the computer to the tv, with a cardock it is essentially a carputer, I can edit documents on a small device without carrying a laptop, and with it is great for showing off pictures and things better than a phone. That is only the tip of the iceberg.
I am sure if I put further thought into it, I would come up with alot more and this is a long post already, but something else the Tab has done for me that I really enjoy is that I enjoy it so much, I have gone from a lurker to a poster on many Android forums, including starting out here on XDA.
Forgot to mention price
Sorry, forgot to mention your concern about price. I got a brand new T-Mobile Tab (researching on XDA I found GSM had more dev work being done) on eBay for $425, so only $100 more than a Nook Color with the protection plan, which is what I had before the Tab and returned it after a week.

I have the phone enabled on my Tab and I use it all the time. I bought the tab without a contract and flashed it with the JMI rom and a modem.
If you buy a device that is capable of voice communication and you use it that way why should you be wary of someone seeing you use it that way?
The device is FCC legal, has a prepaid sim card and is running a legal operating system.
There is nothing wrong with using a device in a way it was designed to be used as long as you pay for it.

Motorola is getting an hint of respect from me... The less Flash (and Air) the better.
Anyway the tab is really awesome to watch videos, can decode with no trouble 1080p at over 40mbps... Plus i'd say this form factor is the best one. And it works as a phone.

The Tab is currently the least worst 7" Android tablet out there. I love it. Now priced at where it should be (here in UK at least). Pop in a 3GB sim card (9 quid on amazon) and it's the perfect always online mobile device. It'll be interesting to see other 7" or so devices hit the market soon. That's what I would be comparing it against.
The 10" ones are not mobile enough due to size and weight (I use a car dock with the Tab - can't do that with a 10" without infringing on some local law ). I'm also a bit wary of how the Tegra 2 chipset found in most of them is performing. Video especially seems a bit of a letdown. At least we'll all soon have a lot of choices in formats and features. Still early days...
My one concern is that we may not see Honeycomb on the Tab. I suspect Samsung will skip over it for the Gingerbread V2/Ice Cream (depending on rumours) OS which brings in Honeycomb features for smartphones. The Tab has physical buttons and Honeycomb would seem wrong with that. Of course, knowing Samsung we may see nothing at all....
Yes I am still happy with my tab.
I would have suggested an version #2 if it was 7 inch with better camera and SuperAmoled screen.
Will sell mine only if next version includes all that features without losing batery life.
Yes if you desire portability. Personally I love my tab,now my dad wants one too so I think I'm going to give him mine as soon as I get the replacement back from Samsung(tab stopped turning one, dead battery I'm guessing). I'm gonna get the iPad 2 since I already have the Evo, which I use on the go and I miss iOS adventure games

Motorola xoom , is it good?

hi everyone , ive just bought my motorola xoom mz604 , and i think its awesome because android honeycomb is really good OS, it is fast and smooth
but iam having some problems with installing apps, and i realized that most of them aren't compitable with the xoom, like the android games hawx, assassins creed and modern combat 2...
anyways i just wanted to know the adv and dis-adv of my device from an expert
thnx =)
sorry for my bad english
Answering the question in your title, the xoom IS good... very good, in fact. Sure there are a few apps here and there that do not work, but for the most part, everything runs fine. Additionally, the new scaling option in 3.2 ensures that more apps are functional. I simply love the beauty and elegance of honeycomb, and I still find the xoom to be my preferred method to obtain the honeycomb experience. Plus, being Google's reference HC device, we get all of the updates first.
I like it
3.1/3.2 is brill for emulators too when you connect up a ps3 controller via usb!

Moto is a horrible company
The xoom 3g has turned into the last tab to recieve updates

I couldn't disagree more, but to each his own...
I'm plenty happy with mine, just a wifi though and no cell network model. That, honestly, is probably the issue with slow updates just like it is for my epic: the company that runs the network it's attached to wants to manage its stuff (aka install crap and extra 'features') and is slowing down the process. Sprint is HORRIBLE with this.
As for why I chose the xoom over others - part of it was price, it was the $400 32gb wifi model off woot.com. Second was that it has actual ports on it (micro-usb, mini-hdmi, etc) and not some proprietary jack *cough*galaxytab*cough* that you need to hook up some dorky dongle to in order to get a usb port.
I'm pissed that the Xoom 3.2 update only let's you read the SD card but not write. That's ass backwards to me.
I have to root this thing to get that basic feature. I think they still haven't figured out the issue that devs figured out. Other than that I like it and apps are slowly starting to catch up.

Like most of the respondents to this thread, I have been very happy with my Xoom. I have had the chance to play about with most of its major rivals in the 10 inch space (The Transformer and the Iconia and a 7 inch Tab) and while each has pros and cons (and nearly identical tech specs), I prefer the Xoom for several reasons...
The build quality is excellent. The device feels solid and durable while also giving off a sense of luxury. Most people who have handled it have commented on how "high-end" the Xoom feels.
As a Google experience device (thanks to special ordering a US model), the Xoom has the best chance of the current crop of tablets to run Ice Cream Sandwich well in a few months.
The XDA community for the Xoom is the best developed of the current slew of tablets with many excellent developers and plenty of other users willing to help and guide you (and "gently" remind you when you are being an idiot).
I like the design of the Xoom, with the power button recessed on the gently curved back. The placement works well for me and I prefer it to having the power button on the front of the edge of the tablet.
Those are my reasons for choosing the Xoom as the first amongst equals, but as always, ymmv. I suggest you find a store with demo models of most brands and see which one feels right to you.

Fair Enough. Touchwiz might be able to be disabled when it comes out but maybe not. The xoom comes with a bit of crapware itself, dungeon defender and cordy are the ones that come to mind though there may be more.
It would not be worth the cost to me but to each his own. You could probably find a xoom owner who is fed up with Motorola enough to do a trade.

Hello everybody, I am thinking about picking up one of these tablets and wondering what everybody thinks of theirs. I know that its not gonna be comparable to some other high end tabs but for the money that your saving is the Tablet itself worth it? Any reviews would be greatly appreciated!
the A500 is actually the best purchase I've made this year. It pretty much replaced my laptop as my couchside connection to the web.
Do you have the 16gb or 32?

I think the worst thing you could ever do is to go to a dedicated forum for a product you know little about and ask questions like, "...worth it?" or "... I know its[sic] not gonna be comparable to some other high end tabs" and the ever popular but never informative "I am thinking about picking up one of these <insert product here>"
You really won't get much more than biased responses. The best thing you can do is go everywhere else that isn't dedicated to the product you're looking to research *with* your needs in tow and read read read what other people have to say - their issues, the ups and downs - without jumping, waving your hands around and pointing at yourself.
newegg.com, google.com, youtube.com, bestbuy.com etc etc are a good place for you to poke around and read unaided, real-world, replies and topics on issues, questions, comparisons etc.
While this is not by any means ideal for the most part, those who own a product will love it and those who don't will say it's **** - the point is, you should be trying to mitigate that bias by reading up in places that would be less likely to have biased information. Formulate your own opinion based on your needs and what you read [time and time again - which you'll only know if you read read read in a variety of different places] then come back when you have all your specific questions or concerns to get some clarity.
I've got the 16 gb version with wifi only.
I use it for 99% of the things my laptop did and I'm a power user.
Only issue I've had was with torrents.

tTotorrent works fine for me, the issue I have is no app comparable with PeerBlock
Just curious does the Acer tab pick up wireless N networks?

Yes, that would be listed in "specs" located on Acer's web site, and pretty much any site that sells the A500

tTorrent is alright but speeds suck even with full version. 750 kbps compared to 1.8 mbps for the same file over the same wifi network using my laptop. Slow.

Which "other high end tabs" do you have in mind? A500 is comparable to every single one of them and actually it comes on top considering connectivity, build quality, etc. Two days ago I bought my wife an ipad2 and she spends half the time at the tablet and the other half at her laptop. I spend 90% of my free time on the tablet and 10% on my laptop. The only thing that ipad has better is the colours of the screen. The white is pretty close to the real white while on the A500 its cooler than it should be. Other than that all I'm hearing these days is "oh, I can't see the pictures on the usb memory stick, right?", "So I need to convert the videos I have to watch them, right?" and my favorite "that stupid iTunes..."
Compared to the Android tablets currently on the market, the Iconia gives more than any of them can.

Here is the #1 thing that I like about the A500: The full size USB port! It is one of the only ones that has it. You can plug in hard drives, usb drives, game controllers etc directly into the tablet. Not many others can do that.
One thing that people give grief to the A500 on is the screen. People think that just because it isn't an IPS panel then it is no good. In my opinion the screen looks great!

My recommendation is to wait a while.
Why?
1. The tablet isn't going anywhere in the next few months and will only get cheaper.
2. The "2s" will be coming early next year - Xoom 2, Transformer 2, Iconia 2? etc. not to mention a slew of other options containing newer/faster/better CPUs at possibly a similar price point hitting the market soon.
3. ICS is out and very, very soon we'll see which tablets are updated the fastest. If you wait just a while longer, you may be able to pick something up at a similar pricepoint with ICS on there initially.
At this point, there's no rush and you'll be better off waiting a bit to see if something nicer comes along. Now granted, something nicer will always come along and it never pays to KEEP waiting. But at this point the Tegra 2 is aged and I think you need to give yourself just a bit more time since you can. Archos for example just released the G9 101 and while I don't see myself buying a tablet with less than 1GB of memory, I am certain vendors will be using alternative, newer dual core chips in their versions coming out in a while. Of course that's just me. I believe in "do unto others" and this is what I would have done if I was in the market for a tablet right now, I'd wait until at least Feb/March of 2012.
That being said, don't get me wrong...I love my A500 and I would surely have recommended it in the past few months. But right now we're on the cusp of a veritable barrage of devices running newer hardware. I wouldn't recommend buying any of the Tegra 2 tablets right now.

Gotta give props to the Xoom

I'm on my second Xoom in a year. I bought a WiFi only model, sold it and grabbed a 4G/LTE version 6 moths ago. Yes, even with all the new tablets out or on their way late last year, I still felt the Xoom was the best Android tablet available with 4G connectivity. The build quality and lack of annoyances (reboots for no reason, slow WiFi connect, bad GPS, etc) that are found on other Android tablets still make the Xoom a really nice option.
I've owned or used Acer tablets, Asus tablets, Toshiba tablets, Samsung tablets, Apple tablets, E-locity tablets and the Xoom. Hands down the Xoom is still my favorite and a year later I feel good every time I use it. I guess initially cost held consumers away from Motorola tablets, which is a shame, because outside of the loving the IPS screen on my Asus Tranformer I pick up my Xoom every time hands down because;
Build quality is better
WiFi is better
Speakers are better
GPS is better
No random reboots
I'm a Motorola fan from phones to tablets and it's a shame the Xoom hasn't commanded the respect and following I think it deserves for being solid Android tablet choice. I'm very happy with mine and hope to continue to get use for work and play out of it for a few more years before trading up.

Now that the Xoom is over a year old and the prices have come down so much, I love being able to tell people that my Xoom holds its own with newer tablets twice its price...and it does!

this.....i visit a lot of forums and people always ask whats the best tablet, and no one ever mentions the xoom. so i chime in and ask "what can your tablet do, that mines can't?". I never get an honest answer. The xoom is still one of the best tabs on the market. Even though we dont have full sd card support, or you have to root to enbale usb devices, i still dont find those things bothersome. With a 64gb card installed, why would i need to worry about deleting something from it, attaching an additional hard drive?
I have to admit that other than the Kindle Fire, there isn't an android or apple tablet I would rather have. The Kindle Fire is attractive to me because of the way you can access ALL of the Kindle library content and magazine subscriptions. I also really enjoy the Amazon Instant Video capabilities. Overall, it's just the best portable media device for people who pay for stuff
I still kinda hate my Xoom but there isn't a tablet I would rather have other than something running Windows 8. When Microsoft releases Office for Android, I will probably either keep this device forever or dump it for something lighter that runs Windows 8. I can and do get a lot done with this thing. My husband always comments that I take it everywhere and use it for everything. (I feel that I spent a lot of money on it and should expect to get a lot out of it.)

Yes, I remember that you were really unhappy with it at some point, but I'm glad to hear that it's been and still is useful to you.
I love, love, love mine, still. Even more than before because it does everything I need and more.
It does hold its own!
So a friend of mine recently got the "new" ipad, or ipad 3... or whatever... One day we sat down together to take some notes and he shows off his new ipad wi-fi and said:
Hey, mine's got a retina display with 1536 x 2048 screen resolution...
So I said... Well, my Xoom's got expandable storage above the 32gb on board memory, flash support in a fantastic browser, A-GPS support, Java MIDP emulator, a 2mp front facing camera, dual band wi-fi hotspot, stereo speakers, oh... and bluetooth that works with pretty much every other device out there...
So he said... well, at least mine's got a higher ppi pixel density...
I just smiled!

Yeah it is, thank you Okantomi. I squeeze everything I can get out of it. What do I do with mine? Typed & handwritten notes for class and work (plus annotated drawings FreeNote is great for that,) scan documents to PDF and sometimes use as an OCR, present PowerPoint briefings (awkward HDMI setup required but it's better than nothing.) While surveying a new event site, I use the camera to take pictures of those building evacuation diagrams, save them as PDF. I then take pictures in the venue with the camera and put those in the same PDF. Using my PDF editor, I can bookmark those pictures in the PDF with the floor plan which lets me create kind of a site familiarization document/way finding tool almost on the fly. If I had a panorama viewer and could put my own buildings on other models in the Android version of Google Earth, I could get almost everything done before I even got back to the office.
I also use AutoCAD WS when the CAD data is available and ESRI ArcView to check some of my mapping stuff (our GPS is a little coarse but it's workable.) I can't integrate CAD into a PDF on the Xoom but the point is that this device that I paid a few hundred dollars for can do almost everything my $2100 Windows 7 tablet can do. It's awesome but not almost 3-4 times the price awesome. It's a shame that they couldn't really make the XYboard a step forward. Come to think of it the Droid2 was only faster than the original Droid (which I wish I had a phone that was just like it but faster. Maybe I'll feel that way about my Xoom in a year?

Hands down the xoom is the best overall tablet I've owned. I've went through a gtab 10.1, flyer, playbook and about 3 nonames before my xoom. I just can't understand why almost no other company can't make a good tablet like Motorola can.

Motorola did a great job on the Xyboard as well. I would never own it because it's not a Google Experience Device, but a friend of mine has the DROID Xyboard 10.1 and I love using his. Motorola's customizations are minimal, Honeycomb runs smooth as butter on it, and some of the features are outstanding. Motocast is really cool, as is Dijit. The Xyboard has built-in infrared hardware that allows the tablet (using the Dijit app) to act as a universal remote control to control your TV, cable box, receiver, whatever.
Plus, let's be honest, who builds a tablet sturdier than Motorola does? Everything they build from phones to tablets to two-way radios are built like a brick ****house.
I feel the xoom is still comparable to today's tablets. I proudly use my wingray as a daily driver.
And I honestly don't understand why some people focus on size and weight so much. The Xoom is a little chubby compared to many other tablets, but it certainly isn't fat. And the xoom isn't much heavier than most other tablets either. Yet the xoom can do the same things, if not more things than the other tablets.
Now that isn't to say the xoom is a perfect tablet (it has a couple flaws), and it isn't to say all other tablets aren't as good, its just like others have said, the xoom should be recognized more today.
And performance-wise, the Xyboard may not have superseded the xoom in terms of performance, but for the people who need a tablet, it is a solid choice.
Recently when I went looking for a Tab, I had the chance to try out most of the new stuff that's out today. After mulling it over, and doing a little research, the choice was really pretty easy for me. Being a fan of GED devices, the Xoom, even though not the newest and flashiest Tab, was still my choice.
I couldn't be happier with my Xoom. I use it daily for many needs, and don't see that changing anytime soon.
Long live the Xoom

I use my GED WiFi Xoom everyday and still love it a year later (got it day one). I also have a Playbook & HTC EVO VIEW 4G & use the XOOM alot more than the other 2 combined. I find myself defending the XOOM on Engadget quite frequently as the fanboys there say it's a major fail. I tell them Xoom can do anything their own Tablets can do (even Delete files/folders using SDCARDXD from Google Play) and I could not be happier. Plus unlike my other tablets the Xoom can use Ad-Hoc and connect to my Photon's Bluetooth for Internet connectivity

Until an unlockable, WAN-enabled, quad-core 10" Android tablet shows up for sale here in the States, my Xoom is my daily-driver (and will likely be my kick-around tablet even then). ICS and the custom ROMs (full disclosure: I help produce one) make this old tablet even more useful than when I got it, two days after launch day- and I own few electronic items that I can say that about.
Call me bias, Motorola the inventor of cell phone, an American company, all of my life I live in these united states of America the mother of higher learning period. Why in hell would I buy a tech gadget that was made by an inferior mind, there is a reason why all other nation send their logger heads here...again call me bias because I am, Oh yeah in anticipation of the Verizon updates I revert back to 3.2.1 HC..

I can neither confirm nor deny that this is the same Xoom as the authorities are looking for a flat metallic object that was involved in an assault and battery that very day (just kidding, I hit like a girl.)

Week one Xoom owner here. It's only gotten better with age and I still wouldn't trade it for any other tablet on the market.
I'm glad that your enjoying your Xoom and its treating you well.
Despite any up sides you have stated, build quality, screen and excellent battery life I have been over all a bit disappointed. I was originally very very happy when I got it but over time I have noticed there is a considerable amount of lagg constantly. Despite rooting and using EOS European 3g rom including over clock it seems to make no difference. Bit of a shame really but other than the pain in the ass lagg its a excellent tablet. Wouldn't buy one again but I'm not gutted I did either
