I just read that the LG Optimus 2x with dual core is coming out in March, and apparently for Tmobile. It will most likely be 4G also.
This makes my new Nexus S seem outdated already. Man I really like the phone but the fact that it doesnt support 4G was already a big hit for me, but I still got it. I didnt realize how much it really affected me until the other day I was talking with a friend who has an Evo and hes "let's see if this face time app works". I said sure, and connected to the my wifi signal, so we're trying to connect and he's like "man, connect to the 4g signal maybe its faster".
At that moment I couldn't open my mouth to say that my new phone which i dropped over $500 for, couldn't connect to 4g. I just played it off and changed topics.
Anyways that was my small rant, I'm sure others feel the same.
LG OPTIMUS currently has:

HDMI Mirroring
4 INCH WVGA Display
8gb Internal
MicroSD Slot
8MP camera
front facing camera
DLNA out of the box
With CES right around the corner, I'm glad I have 30 days to return the Nexus S.

I feel the same way as you. Im not going to say its a bad phone but we all had such high expectations. Who knows maybe LG might make the next NEXUS. I switched from my N1 because that was already starting go get me mad. I use to hate my brothers Vibrant because the screen was so amazing. So my Pros overpower the Cons so ill stick to it. Maybe when the new LG comes out ill jump on it, but i HATE branded phones. loaded with a bunch of crap i don't need.
Already threads open about this. Android is also not optimized yet for dual core, so have fun with utilizing only one core.

i agree with most but now the negatives.
- no community support " really, who buys an LG phone here? "
- its 2.2, they promised 2.3 which will probably be ****ty just like 2.2 on Galaxy S
- for sure no Android 3.0
- its an LG phone. how many times i have to say it ?
in paper, the Lg 2X is amazing. will i buy one ? probably i will. i think think the nexus S is a disspointment in terms of power
its not a bad phone. its just a galaxy S with better software " no rfs bull**** " and support by google. so android 3.0 is coming
plus. its a 3 months away. you could always buy the nexus S and sell it later if that phone is better. BUT if you already have nexus 1 or newer, then yeah dont spend money on nexus S

I suspect the shipped units will have kernels that're set up just fine.
Also just because LG doesn't have a big dev following yet, doesn't mean it wont when this comes out. This could be the thing that starts it off for them.
I seriously thought about waiting for the LG phone, primarily because of the Tegra2 and the 8MP camera. There was one major reason I didn't wait:
Straight Google Experience.
I am sick and tired of waiting for months on end for manufacturers and carriers to update the OS. And I'm tired of wondering if a manufacturer will update an OS for a phone at all.
Sure, the developers here on XDA are amazing, but they still need hardware drivers from the manufacturers to work their magic.
I just wanted to know that I was going to have a phone that Google supported.

It's not like you didn't know the specs before buying the thing. LOL.
Seriously, some of the design decisions on the phone are mind-boggling (no AT&T support like the Vibrant has, no "4G" support, no external sdcard, etc), but we knew these decisions before purchasing.
Personally, I love Galaxy S phones, and this is the best looking, best fitting in my hand of the lot, but I'd been using an i9000 on AT&T and in the areas of Los AngelesI frequent, the AT&T service is better overall than T-Mo. If the phone were 4G, I'd put up with the poorer coverage of T-Mo, but as is, the T-Mo service has me 50/50 on keeping the phone or not.
I have to disagree with the above comment that if you have a Nexus One this upgrade doesn't make sense. The much superior 4" SAMOLED vs. the 3.7" AMOLED screen is reason enough to dump the N1 for the NS, especially if you spend any time in the sunlight. The vastly superior multi-touch touch screen of the NS is also reason enough to switch, IMHO.
To each his own, though.

And even though the nexus s doesn't support it, you still can see slightly increased speeds simply because the network backhaul is increased so that the full 7.2Mbps is achieved on the nexus s. Nexus s owners are already reporting actual download speeds near 6Mbps. Don't you think that is fast enough for video calls fast enough to future proof this phone for at least the next year?
4G technology doesn't exist yet period. Not on T-mobile, not on Sprint, not on Verzion.
Is "4G" (HSPA+) even available in your area?
Better specs don't necessarily equate to a better phone, you might feel like it's outdated only a few months later. I say stick with your Nexus S for at least a year and see what's out then

HSPA+, 4G, whatever you want to call it...4G is just a marketing term and geeks can debate what it is and isn't, but that doesn't change the fact that there are two different networks in T-Mo's arsenal now (HSPA and HSPA+) and that one of them is capable of significantly higher speeds than the other. The 4G/not-4G talk is pointless.
I haven't done a lot of testing with the NS and data speeds yet; haven't had a chance with work so busy right now. I think I got around 3000Kb/s the other day, which is respectable.
I'm in Los Angeles, and we have the HSPA+ upgrade in my local area.
Near the Van Nuys airport, where I spend most of my away-from-wifi time, my Nexus One was getting a consistent 4000Kb/s, but I've never seen more than 4400 or so. Pretty impressive, but nowhere near the 6-7.2Mb/s. Also not nearly so impressive when I consider that my iPhone 4 and Galaxy S i9000 both get consistent 3000Kb/s speeds on AT&T.
3000-4000Kb/s really is fast enough for most uses, but when the network's newest phones are offering speeds 50-100% faster and then release a "flagship device" as people are calling the NS, it's a bit disappointing to not be part of the fastest crowd.
As I mentioned above, the lack of HSPA+ isn't a deal breaker for me, but the T-Mo service in general makes this a much less attractive phone for me as my primary device. My N1 had been relegated to wifi-hotspot/tethering-the-laptop duties since last July.

I second that. And pple keep talking about this tegra 2 crap what really are you gonna use dual core for? I mean lets be senseful here? With Gingerbread this phone is already fast and and pretty much polished. Tegra 2 is probably gonna be a battery hog. And this phone is gonna be full of LG/TMO bloatware, and no support at all its gonna be atuck at 2.3 for ever. That's 'IF' it even releases on 2.3. Anf Honestly who wants an LG phone c'mon now. Return your phone and you shall regret. Trust me the Nexus S is sold out pretty much everywhere when u return it and try to change ur mind to get it again its gonna be gone.. And I know thats gonna happen

I live 10 mins away from NYC so 4G is in my area. I understand completely what everyone else here is saying but I'm just thinking that with all these potential dual core devices coming out, that makes the Nexus S not future proof regardless of Google's support or not. This will also make the resale value drop gradually compared to the original Nexus which was a BEAST of a phone when it came out, and still hangs with the best now.

So let me ask you something. Are dual core phones gonna drop the iPhone 4 value as well? I mean its gonna be single core for a while chances are the next one will STILL be single core.

Haven't people watch the dogfight of Nexus S vs MyTouch 4G where they compare speed test side by side in a HSPA+ coverage area? And guess what, the greatest "4G" came slower than the out of date "slower" 3G, not only once but all three consecutive tests.

One guy's results, in one location, really don't make the NS the clear winner. On top of that, they're hardly conclusive...less than 100Kb/s difference on 2/3, only 2Kb/s on one of them. LOL
All cellular/wireless experiences are just like real estate...location, location, location is all that matters. The guy even says he's not getting full HSPA+ service for some reason in his location for the last few days.
Take both phones to a confirmed working HSPA+ location and test again, multiple times at different times of the day and against different servers if you really want to prove/disprove the theory here.
The problem is this; there will be a newer and more powerful handset released every X number of months.
The Nexus S is a great phone that has pros and cons just like all the other leading Android phones.
If you fall into upgrading/swapping for every newer piece of hardware that drops you will be spending a great deal of cash and will never truly be content.
It's always give and take. I will give up "4G" and a dual core CPU for quicker updates and a pure Android experience. The hardware is still top notch.

EXACTLY.....& T-MOBILE 3G coverage is not even everywhere yet so what makes them think 4G will be everywhere in the next few months??
Might as well never get a phone then, since new phones come out every month or two, you'll end up waiting forever.

- I can tell you for sure 80% of cities with HSPA+ you will get the same speed on a non HSPA+ device. If the OP is not even getting a good 3G how can he get a good HSPA+.
- That will be 2 guys test. The second one is me. I had the G2 ("4G") and I tested its speed in Miami, FL (definitely HSPA+ area) and there was no difference at ALL, different times, different locations.
- I'm sure there are places where HSPA+ is a lot faster but thats the minority. If HSPA+ in my were was much faster, sure I will mind, but it is not.
Just watched a demo of the MOTO Atrix dual core....wow the scrolling is horrible. Side by side with the Epic, the differences are HUGE! It's hard not to smile knowing that the EPIC still dominates even dual core offerings.
I noticed it's an ATT "4G" phone, so after going to ATT site and clicking their 4G link, it took me to a map of blue colored coverage, which oddly enough looks EXACTLY like their 3G coverage. Upon further examination, that's EXACTLY what they show you, the 3G coverage. There are but a small handful of cities that actually implement TMOs HSPA+ '4G'. Just like apple, att using their 'full of ****' marketing practices. It's really sad how much $ apple and att has made selling inferior hardware and service for twice that of which I pay for the Epic on Sprint.
I have 2 Epics, with unlimited everything (except the landline 1500min pool), and both phones plans combined is cheaper than 1 iphone with unlimited everything, except the 4GB worth of data. And that's 3G data!
Man that's so sad. I can't believe how many fools there are out there.
Samsung can't get Froyo right to save their life, but even the Eclair Epic is a better choice than the Atrix.

the epic has its winning points and the atrix has its also

its all personal opinion of what people think
i love the atrix 4g and dont really care for the epic because i live in a blind spot but i love the work that is done with the roms

i am in denial but I cant wait till cm7 gets here for my girls phone
My friend who I have known for 8 years bought the Atrix with the Dock and everything spending $500+. Personally, I would have not invested so much in a device that is not going to easy to make custom kernel's for. Matter of fact, its a locked boot loader which means you are screwed. Even Cyanogen himself said today that he would support the device had it not been for that fact. Still, its kinda cool, but makes developing for it a lot ( LOT ) harder than it should be.
Yet they make the XOOM developer friendly. Go figure, why would they not choose this with the phone? Do we have the provider to blame? Is it what they want for their phone systems, or are we just being put to a test to see how far developers can push the envelope with the newest phones to make custom roms/kernels?

XOOM is a "flagship device" all of google's flagship devices are the first to ship with the OS and are VERY developer friendly so far the list is G1,Droid,Nexus 1, Nexus S, XOOM
Honestly, I can not stand AT&T. They have the same pricing as Verizon, yet they're inferior (network wise) to Sprint. The only reason they had a chance in the mobile market industry is because of the iPhone (which I still prefer Android over).
Now that Verizon has iPhone, ATT will probably be bought out by another carrier, or something weird.

LOL -- ATT....did someone just defend ATTs service???
Sprint's CLEAR division has LTE in Phoenix running 100Mb down and peak 47Mb uploads.........ATT probably runs their whole network off of one of the LTE connections.
There will always be someone who lives in a dead zone. WiMax ins't there yet, but between Sprint and Verizon's networks, Phoenix couldn't be covered any better. Roms allow for forced roam, which I had on my WinMo 6.5 phone.....and could switch between networks and roam 3G if I had a Sprint issue. It made for the most robust phone I've ever seen anyone in possession of (TP2 was quad band).

Their 'enhanced' 3G is quite fast....Got over 5Mb on my sisters Samsung Tab sitting 100ft in front of the tower....2Mb up. Damn't Sprint, unlock our WiMax UPLOAD already.......bandwidth is clearly available up and down, it won't do jack to the network if they let us full duplex. I mean, it's a phone..... I couldn't imagine FB pic uploads swamping the network with just a fraction of the HD YouTube streaming

I had tmobile and sprint since then and both of these carriers are light years ahead in terms of everything,dont know about verizon but I havent heard nothing bad about them.

sprints customer service in stores sucks big time **** and thats another reason why i left.
some of the employees are just braindead and dont what is right or left
att and verizon are the best right now and because they know what they are doing and thats why they are so big

Almost all store employees are dumb at any carrier.
What counts for sprint and tmobile is that they dont disconnect your service if you dont pay wkthing 2-3 days.I can be 2 weeks late with sprint and not get charged extra and not even have a warning from sprint.
Plus on sprint and tmobile I can download 80gb of movies a month,they dont have data cap.So if you use your phone as your primary internet then tmo and sprint is only choices.
I just wish I dint leave tmobile for sprint because speed was way faster on tmobile,and my promised sprint's 4g never came.
Yeah your ridge about Tue paying the.bill late. I've been late before and they don't even care.

The atrix is a far more powerful device, but the first true dual cores will be powered by omap4 and perhaps 3rd Gen snapdragons or tegra3's. That's when it all really begins.
You may want to read here. Might impact your decision.
Just wanted to let you know and give you the best possible buying decisions.
I can upgrade now, as it has been over a year, or I could wait till November till my contract ends. I think I'm gonna hold until my contract ends with Verizon, and switch to the best phone possible (Kal-EL anyone?) regardless of carrier (unless the carrier is notoriously terrible at service). After the codec issues with the Tegra2, I'm just waiting on Samsung's Exynos GPU (although that might change in the near future). 4G wont be avaliable anywhere I live anytime soon, so.....eh.

3G won't be capped at all, will it? If it isn't, then I'm pretty sure 5GB will be enough for me per month with 4G. I'm pretty often in some place with wifi, and I don't watch many videos or download particularly large stuff directly to my phone, so I'm not gonna rush out and get a Thunderbolt now. I'm still waiting on Verizon's Galaxy S II before I make the switch to a new phone (or some comparable, non-Bionic dual-core phone).

3G smartphone plans have always been and will always be unlimited. Yea they have a soft cap which they issue warnings and stuff, but I've never seen any, and members on here claim to use about 15-20 GB on 3G and never claim to have been bothered, so I'd say, yea, its pretty much unlimited.
Since it's now Friday and nothing seems to have happened (you would have seen a big fat announcement somewhere), let's file this under "debunked".

So I used and loved my Dell steak for a good year or so and I upgraded to an HTC vivid yesterday. The phone is fantastic, but I definitely miss the large screen. How is the Note for former streak users? Will it work on AT&T lte here in Dallas, TX? Is it worth selling the vivid and spending 800 bones on? What do you guys think?

I gotta say, there's a lot of things that I find different about the vivid than in the Engadget review. Check out some of the comments in that thread. I spent well over an hour deciding which one I wanted. But this isn't about that. I think if the Note worked on AT&T's lte I would jump on the Note.
I'm a former Streak user and I've just upgraded to a Note. Loving it, although being a former Streak user means I'm not overwhelmed.
IMHO the Streak was a massively underestimated device, and sadly I think the Note may be heading the same way. And all because it's a bit big .
My first mobile (NEC P3) was humungously bigger than the Note and only had 4-line LCD display - the P3 was a real struggle to put in a jean pocket , the Note is definitely not and that's all that matters surely ? What is it with the "how it looks up to your ear" angst
The reason I upgraded to the Note is the increased performance, resolution, drawing/note taking ability and a better chance of getting decent and timely OS upgrades.
Can't help you with the connectivity questions (I'm in UK), but it seems a shame that in the US it's so hard to get these answers for you early adopters thinking of importing. Can't the US journos who review these things get the answers ?

Fantastic points of view! I miss my large screen quite a bit, but lte here in Dallas is incredible and worth taking the hit. I've been finding that reviewers are reporting speeds that people get with hspa+ here as lte speeds. I've been getting a consistent 35 to 45mbps download speeds. I find that incredibly strange. If the Note can access those kind of speeds here in Dallas, it would certainly be a dream device to say the least. And definitely worth the cash.
Something I did to really sell me on the device (I dont have it... yet) is I went to best buy and dinked around with the Galaxy Player 5. It is running 2.3, is huge and still rather thin, which is the closest simulation to the Note I can think of. The people looked at me weird when I was trying to slide it in my pocket, but it confirmed that a device that huge can still comfortably fit.
Just a warning... as has been said, if one goes that big, Im not sure how one could ever go smaller...

I had the streak. The note is better in every way!!! 21 MBPS at a desktop resolution while on the web at 1200 x 800 is much better for me than 50 MBPS on a smaller, less resolution screen. I am on wi fi most of the time anyway.
It looks like it does support lte according to Engadget's review, but it's very vague...

Unless you wait for the korean version (which still might not work) you will not get LTE on the Note.

LTE won't be coming to most areas till 2015 on At&t.
All LTE means is worse battery life, more bulk, and most likely a worse processor. Just look at the skyrocket.
There really is no need for LTE on phones either. HSPA+ allows me to stream 1080p without stopping.
If you want LTE go buy a SGS2 ****rocket.

Are you joking? If you haven't noticed I live in Dallas and own an HTC Vivid. I'm taking great advantage of LTE right now. It's fantastic. Which is why I want the Note to have it. I'll also vouch that my battery life is no worse than normal on a typical Android phone. Your angry reply is either full of idiocy or misinformation. You have no idea what I do with my phone nor if I it need or not. I believe everyone is different. Hence the reason why we come to this site; to be different. 2015? Eventually they will release it in US too. Here the chance that its going to be LTE is high. This might easily take 4-6 months.
If LTE were to come to my place, i would love to enjoy the LTE speeds too....

Wasn't an angry reply. At&t hasn't even rolled out LTE in NY yet. It's about to be 2012 and AT&T only has LTE in about 8 cities, not including NYC. By the time AT&T covers all of the US at this rate, it will be about 2015 or '16. I don't understand how that's wrong info? Most of the US doesn't even have HSPA+ yet. I'm lucky to live in the small portion of HSPA+ area.
The ****rocket is heavier enough to notice a diff. when holding it in your hand against the og SGSII. It has a bulkier design and is choppy, again LTE is in about 8 cities.
How would I know where you live? I'm on the mobile version if you couldn't tell... Even if I was on the full site, I don't look to see where people live... that's just sketchy.
About your data usage and how it fits your "lifestyle". Unless you're illegally downloading movies, games, or other copyrighted files, there really is no point in having LTE. My home wifi sucks so I use my phone to download things occasionally, HSPA+ works fine and is fast enough and I watch netflix, download apps, and youtube vids on my unlim. data plan. LTE is also kind of pointless unless you have unlimited data as well.
Anyway before you start calling people idiots, use your head. LTE has been around for a long time now with VZW. It took them about 4 years to roll out their LTE network and it still doesn't give coverage to everyone. Now, since I'm "idiotic", correct my math... 2011+4=2015.

My location is right there under my screen name. Again, you don't know what my lifestyle is like and I'll tell you now, it has nothing to do with illegal downloads. more about streaming from my cloud via pogo plug. Next, you clearly have a problem with reading things thoroughly as I clearly wrote Dallas, not Houston. So to answer your question: No. You didn't "duz gud". And if you think the weight difference between the skyrocket and the sgs2 is a big enough difference, then you should probably do a few curls with a dish towel to get a little stronger. As far as internet speeds go, you have crappy wifi? It's comparable to when you girlfriend says "It was good for me too". She just doesn't have anything better to compare it to. It's pretty awesome getting 45mbps on my phone as others that have experienced it can attest, and as they say; once you go LTE, you can't go back to slower speeds... or you can't go back to playboy! (well no one really says that, but it's awesome!) Think about what technology we will have soon that might require more data or faster speeds. Oh so now you are resorting to muscular insults. Well before I say anything, I bench 250 and hit the gym every other day, the reason I care about weight is I don't want an ugly fat phone that could be lighter.
I honestly do not see any use for 1gbps download speeds on a MOBILE Phone. Don't get ahead of yourself. PC's don't even require that kind of speed, so why would a phone need it?
Back to LTE... cool you get 45mbps, now name some practical uses of that speed. Doing anything that strains internet connection would not require even a tenth of that speed.

Definitely LTE, I was ready to jump ship to AT&T but now I don't even know if I'll get this... waiting to see if any good LTE options become available in the next few weeks.
LTE is a dogs breakfast, especially in the US, when {again} it has decided to use different frequencies to most of the rest of the world...

Oh, definitely the price drop. I mean, I'm not using my phone for anything that requires 42 mbps or any super high speeds anyway. As long as my YouTube videos are loading properly, which is the main thing I would need for speed, I'm okay.
Between LTE being overly battery hungry and the lack of unlimited data, I say no freaking way I want LTE! I've had LTE before and it's eye opening fast, but I think HSPA+ is the golden ticket right now. It's very battery friendly and plenty fast enough for a mobile handset.
I've had 2 Gnex's (maguro and toro) and I can say that the battery on the Maguro Gnex is easily 50% better. As power hungry as these mobile platforms are these days, until they make improvements on LTE power consumption, I will not have another LTE phone as I've had 3 of them and they're all power hungry!
i think the question is better asked, price drop or cdma compatible? because this phone is useless to me having Sprint about to switch to Verizon network...

I definitely like the current price, I will be selling my att sgs3 for the nexus4 without a doubt in my mind. I don't really even get LTE in these parts of CT so lte is not a deciding factor at all.

My grandparents live in a rural area and its where I spend about 1/4 of the year. Tmobile and Att are GPRS, but Sprint and Verizon have 3g. Its the only internet there and I need reliable internet for work. I can't get the new Nexus.
I know I'm in a small boat of people but I'm still going to post my sob story. I just love the Nexus program.

while i agree the updates take longer... i also prefer to use Sprint/Verizon over GSM options...
I understand its coming to T-Mobile, but will the Nexus 4 work on AT&T's HSPA+ network?

I agree with you there, I'm not too big on LTE myself, mainly for the fact that the faster my data is being processed, the more money I have to spend on data overages. But that's just me.
I would pay $500+ for 32GB and LTE if only Google would give me the option and take my money.
Instead I'm stuck between choosing between a capable phone and one that will get updates.

Sounds like Fanboy talk to me. Brings me back to the Iphone 4s launch.
My GS3 gets great battery life and radios are getting better everyday.
No LTE is a dealbreaker. You can't honestly tell me that having this outdated technology is adequate. Not when most people keep heir phones for 2 yrs. T-mobile might not even be around in 2 yrs.
One of Androids biggest selling points is that they are always pushing the boundaries of technology. This is a huge step back.
One of the reasons, Apple products are so solidly built is they wait till the tech is old before they incorporate them into their products. I could get a cutting edge sailboat built but who uses sailboats. The Nexus 4 for is a cutting edge sailboat.
A 1.5ghz Quadcore Krait that's about a hair better than the International GS3. They could have at least gone Quad core Cortex A15.
All this so that I can have "Vanilla Android", if that's the price no thank you I'll stick with Cyanogenmod & AOKP.
Wouldn't mind a lte option but screw all the us carrier nonsense
Id rather have a dumb phone then have a CDMA device or anything at all to do with Verizon or sprint.
