I rooted Cyanogenmod 6.1! - G2 and Desire Z General

Anyone remember how the very first android phone, the G1, got rooted way back in the day?
No? Let me remind you.
There was this little bug where a root shell was spawned during boot, and anything you typed into your phone-- an email, a text message, a search, whatever-- was simultaneously going to the root shell.
So for example, if you typed return, then "reboot", then return, your phone would reboot.
So, yeah.... scotty2 and I were talking tonight, and umm... well, you got cm 6.1 installed?
Try it. But not without saving your work first.
So retro. Still, I think we're gonna need a new init.rc
Update: works with soft keyboards too! ...as long as you don't have word-complete on. Open up a blank email and in the body section-- return, "reboot", return.

Yeah, I noticed this. It actually came in handy earlier when I applied a morph that sent com.android.phone into a fc loop

Wow, I was getting my knives sharpened for my response to this thread when I saw the title. "This should be fun," I told myself as I clicked the link.
Sigh.

Ah.... thanks for the memories! That is too funny! the same exploit could have been used if there was no wp! Sorry, had to say it

it could also cause lots of problems if someone was to type the wrong things...

Very true... so don't recite this poem anywhere near #cyanogenmod:
There once was a crazy old coot.
Who taught himself how to compute.
But the silly old fart
just couldn't restart.
If only he'd typed in… ?
(for the record, that was a joke. It's not cool to have people reboot their phones w/o expecting it.)

Just tested this with lenny using the command
Code:
ls / > /sdcard/test.txt
and it didn't appear to work, so this perhaps isn't a complete shell? Or perhaps we failed
Tested on a Hero using my "spin" of CM6.1 final, and it didn't reboot.

Pretty sure this was discussed a while back, before CM was out on the G2/DZ, and it works the same on a stock ROM too.

hasn't there been like 50+ posts about this?

The funny thing is not that T-Mobile and HTC brought back this old bug (we knew this a long time during the rooting process) the funny thing is that it could make it into a cyanogen boot.img

No. My post served a purpose to the thread while yours was, in a word, useless.

Can anyone give me instructions on how to reproduce this? Got it to work once and haven't been able to for 2 days. Looks like they patched a wifi issue in cyanogen git, I just want to confirm that this issue is somehow related to wifi.

ThunderBolt Port - HTCSense.com

Been gone from the Eris side for almost a year now. Wanted drop a gift for everyone tonight.
We have been working on this since we got the dev Thunderbolt phone. This is a merge of 2.1 Stock Eris and the 2.2 Thunderbolt rom. Brings the new Sense from thunderbolt along with HTCSense.com compatibility from the DesireHD.
Fast, smooth and basic. Beyond that, nothing else really to day.
Don't let sense scare you off, ask the "old timers", when I drop a rom (rarely) you know its good.
As always, do a nandroid backup before flashing. Tested with amon ra's recovery. I take no responsibility for failing to backup, or damaged caused by my work. </disclaimer>

Having trouble getting SU permissions for anything. redownloaded the latest superuser, nothing happens. It goes to a blank black screen rather than asking for root rights. Ditto for using terminal and typing in the "su" command. Anyone else?
Also the firmware version is 1.5 (cupcake)?

That was my initial thought when I first loaded it up with the bootani, but then I thought, no way is a respected XDA dev like jcase gonna mess around like that with an entire ROM. Not getting SU access + the rickroll bootani makes for pretty strong evidence though

Defy got CM7 Port

If the Defy can do it, why can't we? It has a locked bootloader too. I bet I sound pretty stupid because there is something I'm missing, but oh well...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033654
A quick glance says that they're using update.zip files to clobber /system, so they're not touching the bootloader. So this should be doable, although I believe that our CWM could use some more work.

He says something about Korean developers... Ah ha! That's what has been missing from this equation all along!
Yeh, you are probably right. And as next step would be understanding the current cm7 defy port and maybe try do to the same thing using cm7 harmony as a base.
I could try doing it, I'm a quite experienced java developer (6+ years) and wouldn't have problems learning it BUT, as I already sold my old Nexus One, Atrix is my current phone and I don't wanna risk it... =/

Not sure if I know what I am doing, but when the poop hits the propeller, I have never had to build source that wasn't already at least somewhat modified for my device.
I got all the proprietary stuff, the countless extra common additions, and now it seems I have to go find all the hardware build parts missing because all we got was a nexus layout and dashed hopes of much more.
It may or may not be realistic to just merge in the missing parts, but at least it is a good start. Everything is configured to work, it just wants some stuff I am still downloading.

I will post every detail I can, but I will admit a lot of it is currently mixed in with DHD and Dinc, as we have been working as one team instead of separate devices. I will make a point to link up what has been going on soon. That was overlooked on my part.
The builds in the first post are functional, but the version being built from source should not and will not be a [email protected]$$ rip -off of another device. That is costing time...

He responded to make a valid point because a lot of the posts that have been removed are the direct result of not reading the first post. There have been MANY posts throughout the entire site pushing for releases only days after the initial release of a partial source. I think it is best you keep in mind, that nothing he said is directly rude unless you choose to read it that way.
