Gingerbread is out for Nexus...So when can G2 wxpect it" - G2 and Desire Z General

Gingerbread was released for Nexus One today...anyone know how long till it hits G2 owners? Being a vanilla phone shouldnt we be next?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App

Since G2 is an official T-Mo phone, all depends on T-Mo's mood I guess...

It'll be out as a custom ROM sooner than as an official update, I would expect.

Def give it a couple of days let the devs go through the sdk.. Its gonna be a little work moving it over to the g2 because of the physical keyboard and also all the new additions like voip, gyroscope, nfc and all that they gotta make it all work so give it a couple days.. Maybe even something quick tonight..

Yeah. Although honestly, I'm kinda loving the Desire Z ROM - I don't know if I can go back to the stock camera app, frankly. From the SDK screenshots on the Google blog, it doesn't look like there's any real changes there, either.

Actually, we could be waiting a while. According to cyanogen as well as a lott of other devs, the g2 isn't as vanilla as first thought. There's a lot of HTC crap over it and someof the stuff is designed to look like stock while being something else entirely. The point is, it could take a while for us to get it......at least officially....

The SDK isn't the source code though, just the stuff to help you develop Android apps.
Anyone know when the source code usually gets released ? Will it be the day the Nexus S ships ? Or before/after ?

They said it would be coming soon but they said the same for the announcement of 2.3 and that wait felt like forever.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

As a general rule newer versions of android are merged into aosp within a few weeks to a month after the sdk. At least that's what we've historically seen.
It is possible and fairly easy to create a port from the sdk however it tends to be buggy at best.
Once we get a link from an ota from the nexus one we should be able to put together a proper port.
If you're waiting for Cyanogenmod you'll be waiting til 2.3 hita aosp as steve and company build directly from the source.

Well yeah lets see since the nexus one is pretty similar visually to the g2 instead of the hardware keyboard we have we should def be able to switch around the update nd use it for us =] cant wait!

I'm with @THE ORANGE BANDIT...im loving sense...I also don't know if I would go back to it...but than again I could just switch back and fourth between gingerbread and sense

T-Mobile reps told me when I bought the G2 that it was going to be getting the OTAs first, along with the MT4G. So you can possibly expect enomther to release it first.

Source? Source for what? Whether the G2 is stock android? That isn't speculation, at this point its a fact that it isn't "clean" android. If you want to be sure of that, just read cyanogens posts in his thread or the nightly discussions. Gingerbread will need to be ported to this phone just like with any phone running a custom ui albeit faster though because HTC didn't go as far as a whole custom ui. Regardless, I would be willing to bet that gingerbread source is released and ported to cyanogenmod before the G2 gets an OTA.

Even if the stock G2 rom isn't quite as pure as it looks, should that even matter? Isn't the point of something like CM to get AOSP to run on the phone? I was under the impression that CM included very few hacks that are device specific.

No, it doesn't matter if your phone is rooted and running a custom rom. I was reffering to the delay for an official gingerbread OTA. That's why I said it would be ported to CM before its officially ported to the G2.

Gingerbread is not out for the Nexus One yet. Also once the source for it is released then the rom makers can start working on it

I doubt it, because even though the OS is the same, the Incredible uses different hardware, is not labeled desirec, and has a different resolution then the Eris.

Thanks anyway, if it's true they can't use it.
Weren't the current Froyo ROMs ported from the Nexus? That's certainly no more similar to the Eris.
Sent from my FroyoEris using Tapatalk
I know that the hardware is different but so is every other device running Froyo (sanctioned from the manufacturer) but it has been adapted to work on the Eris. If I'm not mistaken though, this is the first Froyo ROM with sense and even though I don't like sense, it doesn't mean others don't want a sense based froyo rom.
Yes a sense based froyo rom would be pretty dang cool
Agreed!
Sent from my Eris using XDA App
It would be sweet that's why I bought my Eris for sense.
I'd be all over a Sense ROM with all the Sense widgets
I agree a froyo port would be very awesome.
If I understand correctly this is the state of froyo for the eris:
All the devices that have gotten froyo + sense have hdpi screen resolutions (http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html) while the eris has an mdpi screen resolution. To port you would have to scale down all the images (lots of them), plus some other tweaks to be able to run it on the eris. Last I read several people have tried to port it (I know Framework43 was trying to port it, and I think koas said he might try to port it). Right now it would be very hard to port, and we *most likely* will not get it until an mdpi device (such as the HTC Legend) gets froyo + sense.
From what I understand this should be beneficial for us getting full on Flash 10.1

Is the Legend on schedule to get Froyo? Or is it like the Eris where it's not been announced either way?
Well at least its got to make it a little easier to get flash on the Eris with Froyo. Even without the rest of Sense, I'd be ecstatic to see flash or even flash lite on Froyo.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
Thanks for the interesting info, homewmt!
I don't think a Froyo Sense ROM would make it easier to get full Flash on the Eris. The fact of the matter is that Flash was written for the ARMv7 instruction set, and we run ARMv6.
The only reason it's been hacked into Sense based ROMs at all is because of Flash-lite. I don't even think Flash-lite will be a part of Froyo Sense deployments since manufacturers only seem concerned about ARMv7 devices getting the update, which all support official Flash.
I could be wrong about all of that, but I call 'em as I see 'em.
Sent from my ERIS using XDA App
I'm pretty sure Flash-lite just provided a way for the browser to call up Flash 10.1 after it was installed. The version of flash I use on eclair is still intended for only Arm7 and above. It runs slow on the Eris because it's Arm6, but it does run. Then again, maybe that's just my eternal optimism showing since I like everything else about Froyo better.

Probably the optimism thing.
Personally, I'm not all that jazzed about Flash. It's not REALLY a feature I ever had, so I haven't had a chance to miss it.
That's not to say that I wouldn't be stoked if someone was able to port it to ARMv6, because I would, but at this point, I don't really see it as a "feature" of Froyo.
Kaos and I are trying to port it. We have hit a roadblock for now, but we'll get it eventually.

[Q] HTC Wildfire S

I have just seen some wildfire s movies and the point is:
it's runneing gingerbread and it has a flip clock.
My question is: If the htc wildfire s has nearly the same things as the normal wildfire.
Can we (if the wildfire s is released) port gingerbread from the s version to ours.
Or will there be an update with the new sense and gingerbread.
Please could someone that know something about it say something to me, please.
And my second question is: Can someone already put the new sense in a rom.
I hope someone really know something about it.

It is not nearly the same. It is totally different. And, to get the new Sense, the code has to be released by HTC. Till that, there wont be a GB Sense Enabled ROM for the Wildfire.
Also, I am pretty sure with the release of the S, HTC will not conveniently forget the original Wildfire and probably not release any updates for it. Its basically an EOL Product now. Its the way the industry works.
After some monthes on the market every mobile phone is EOL. You are right!

Simply because HTC apps require a framework that AOSP ROMS do not have as it is power consuming and is slow.

As djdevine2 stated above, porting Sense would be very hard or even impossible. Sense is like a bug that crawls really deep inside the Android OS. Eliminating is it hard, I imagine introducing it would be also very, very hard.
And not to mention the possible Legal issues that could appear
maybe there is hope
It has also been rumored that the HTC Wildfire will receive the recently released 2.3 Gingerbread update.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_Wildfire
This is just a rumor, but there is still hope.
Doesn't look so. If you look at the citation on that particular line, and, read that thread in another forum, there is nothing there to state that HTC has said anything about 2.3 on Wildfire. It is simply a speculative thread, and, points to CM7 for 2.3 on Wildfire.
"You can have your doubts about when your phone maker will finally get around to delivering an Android 2.3 update (March if you're with HTC, June if Samsung, 2017 if you're unfortunate enough to own a Sony Ericsson), but the smartphone dev community doesn't work that slowly. The guys who build custom ROMs just for the sheer pride of it have already begun work on delivering Gingerbread to owners of HTC's EVO 4G, Droid Eris, and Wildfire."

I digging it too. Had to switch the font, but otherwise, TB is hella responsive. We'll see how the battery life is after a full drain and recharge.
IMO Its all about preference. You gotta ask yourself if y like stock android or sense (among other overlays)
Personally. I havent experienced a rom smoother than Ice Glacier yet. I was surprised since CM7 was less than half the size but smoothness was way behind Ice. IMO Sense roms are more optimized for our chipsets since thats what HTC works on most so im Sense all the way
It really is all personal preference. Especially with a phone like this with so many options the differences in performance are going to be nominal. I personally love CM so that's what I am running. There are people that love sense and there are ROMs out there for that. A better thread for you would have been things you are looking for and we could suggest the best ROM suited for your needs.

Well as you know Sense based rom specially IG is not actually full rom as it just modified and comparing to current CM7(AOSP2.3.X:GB) its 1/3rd of the port size. But as IG heavily depends on Sense based framework it will be little smoother but you can make CM7 smooth also IDK what people talking about it lags as if I even run at 368mhz(max)/245(min)/ondemand (gov) I get NO lag.

+1 / with carlos2384 ... Jaywan's Nexus S is hands down my favorite ROM so far on this device. Jaywan - udaman! I'm pumped about v2.2 for Nexus S !!

Radio is over rated anyway it's only a matter of time before we get a 2.3 leak

i suspect we will get it here in the next few weeks. sense 3.0, i dont think we will ever get though since the tbolt shipped with sense 2.1. the libs from the gingersense leak will help solve these egl issues we have with the sensation and doubleshot ports, but until we start seeing ore lte capable phones, i dont think we will see any feasible ports for the tbolt.
this is just speculation, i dont have any inside info on it, but im willing to bet thats how it all plays out

my bad
.
i much enjoyed the HD sense interface i had when owning the HD2 ... and the only reason i got a t-bolt is to have an NATIVE NAND running android.... i wondered why this sense was missing some stuff i wanna port HTC hub and some of the 2.1 tweaks...... the thunderbolts interface although faster than cmylxgo's desire hd port on hd. it didnt have as many features.....
since we are on 2.2.1 we need a new sense.... haha or until we get that RIL lib set from a new cm build.... thats pretty depressing
once again forgive me if i seem n00bish in this statement but theoretically couldn't we port the rosie and corresponding framework to our 2.2.1 devices?
obviously not from this dump as it is 2.3

it could happen. skyraider is famous for backporting lots of sense 2.1 and 2.0 features to the incredible.
Im not really a sense guy, i <3 aosp, but maybe when things begin to settle down for me a bit i can see what i can do.
virus may also be someone to talk to, i know he does a whole lot of sense work.

Htc said they were not going to upgrade any of the current phones to 3.0 cause they can't "handle" it but to me just sounds like they are just too lazy to update it.

right. why update when they already set the precedent of sticking with the same version till the phone goes EOL? more money for them,
"Oh you just got the brand new Thunderbolt with the CRAZY powerful new snapdragon and 4g? Cool. Running Sense 2.0 right? Nice. New phone coming out next week with the same specs but Sense 3.0. You gonna buy it?"
And since we will never be updated, of course people will go out and buy it. Its the same as the carriers and Google not updating Android versions on older phones, only HTC is even more dickish about it.
can anyone tell me how to download this friggin dump..... i dont understand chinese... ive tried everything on that darn site...
