Rom port - Droid 2 General

I was looking through the lists of roms for the droid 2 and I saw that all the roms are either stock or blur or half blur.... I was wondering if it would even be possible to port the MIUI rom over to the droid 2. It is made for the incredible, nexus 1, original droid, evo, and a few other big name phones and I was thinking we should port it over to the droid 2.
I know there are going to be a bunch of complications but I still don't really understand why a bunch of these roms don't work yet for the droid 2 and what is involved in porting them over...
thanks a lot,
ljbaumer
EDIT: forgot to add the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=823494

i fully agree, i was excited about coming from the eris to the d2 in hopes that this rom existed for it. i've been pretty bummed out since vzw swapped me out because the eris dev community was so strong... i would love to see a miui rom though...

I am in the process of doing this. Last two attempts have been unsuccesful. I am trying to get help from the devs that have been succesful.

that is awesome. if i knew ANYTHING about development i would be the first person to help you. thanks for doing this, anything that provides more options gets us in the right direction.

It would be hard, but I am gonna work on it after my AOSP build. I would be buggy though, because it is an aosp rom.

right on man, sounds great. how is unleashed 3 coming along?

If we were able to get MIUI on to the droid 2 would we be able to use a similar strategy for porting sense over?
Also when is someone gonna work on a kitchen for the D2? I feel like once we get a kitchen set up for this baby we're gonna get a bunch of cool new roms

I came from the Original Droid and the Dev community was HUGE! I would practially have a new ROM every week and I could switch so easily with Rom Manager. I loved it, the D2 just seems too hard to root, I've had to do so many sbf restores, I miss my old OG Droid.

Sorry I should have rephrased myself. Rooting is terribly easy compared to the old way on the OG droid. But I meant installing roms is such a pain on the D2

I am another former Eris user. There were a TON of really great ROMs on that phone. I said it before, I'll say it again: I knew eFuse would mean a diminished number of ROMs and a smaller dev community but I was honestly astonished at how small it is. I'm hoping the Matt churns out his Unleashed 3 here real soon as that would be the perfect basis for a kitchen. Having a good, solid kitchen would be all that we'd need to see some more good, non-Blur ROMs pop up.

I am from eris also and I made roms for myself (not for the public). It was a great community and I did a lot of beta testing for the developer of white widow rom series ( which was a big hit).
I wish some devs would move over or we atleast get a kitchen...

well how were the first few miui roms ported to previous devices, and how can we do that for our D2s? im interesting in helping in any way i can. it sickens me, this is the first device ive ever had to have less than a few roms to play with.
Edit: foot in mouth.

I guess I could PM the evo developer who ported it over... ill try and to that later tonight

You can thank Moto for locking the bootlader and making us jump through hoops and using work arounds to get what we want out of our devices. If we had an unlocked bootloader then we could just install a new kernel but I assume new devices will have similar securities on them so at least from moto get used to working around until someone on the inside slips the keys.

Will Pay for MIUI Droid X

I'm willing to pay $25 to $30 for someone to port over the MIUI ROM over to the Droid X. I'd pay more if I could buy maybe others will chip in?
I can pay half up front but only if you're a well known developer with some reputation behind you. Let me know!

I'll bite, what is MIUI, and if its a ROM then hell yes I would be happy to put cash down.
miui rom
unfortunately this rom requires a custom kernel to run meaning the droid x boot loader would need to be cracked

A unlocked bootloader allows a custom kernel, in which we can use to make and compile very custom roms. For example, true AOSP, MIUI, and Cyanogenmod need a custom kernel to run.

Maybe you should see if people are willing to donate toward getting you a DX to develop it on. I've seen that work in the past. I was under the impression MIUI wouldn't really work with a locked bootloader, though.
well the milestone has a locked bootloader much like us and they have MIUI support
by the way here is the english forum site for MIUI www.miui-dev.com I think we need to be heard over there!!

If you ignore the horrible music, this rom looks pretty flippin sweet! I would definitely give it a try
Agreed. I know that at our current state(likely forever) we will not be able to truly mod the kernel as far as I know. I've spent the last 6 months in the DInc and fascinate forums(reason for not being sure) but currently the milestone does have MIUI support and I'm sure, that with the right developer we could to. There would be some things in the MIUI rom we would lose due to this, but would still be worth it as it is a truly great rom with a solid skin on top of it. Its lightweight, and it will fly. I would gladly pay for this as well. I can compile kernels and what not, and prolly throw a ROM together but porting the MIUI to a phone with a locked bootloader that does not, by design allow unsigned zips, I cannot do. I know we can flash zips in clockwork but the way I understand it, ALL of the ROMS available for the DX, are based off the stock kernel for sure, and likely the framework(this is where my knowledge or lack there of for the DX hurts) and are still somehow tied into blur. I could be wrong. Don't quote me on any specifics about the X, I just came back to it because it offers superior to the dinc by far, and still somewhat better than the fascinate. Again the difficult part of this would be thatbthe MIUI rom is a COMPLETE rebuild of android. I loved it on my dinc. I would pay $100 to have it ported SUCCESSFULLY. As I just got married and don't have time to learn a new phone.

Also, I saw the comment that the milestone has the locked BL, much like us. Your close. Its exactly like us. I don't know about encryption keys but wouldn't be surprised if it was the exact same key. Just saying. I don't know enough about this phone and the bootloader. But it sucks we got stuck with this. I would like to see the dx's full overclock potential. Not just the way we are doing it now. I think we are using modules. And that's not the same as compiling a built from source overclock compatible kernel .

I had a dinc for a little bit. I installed miui and immediately took it off. If I wanted a phone to look like an iPhone I would've bought an iPhone...

If you run the ADW launcher over MIUI, it is pretty awesome... I don't like the IOS look either, but the ROM itself is VERY slick.

installed elements_zinc themed TYVM

I have had my Fascinate since the first week that it came out, came from a droid. In my opinion, out of the box fascinate is by far the biggest POS ever. But I got it for the hardware and the unlocked boot loader. SO I rooted it, replaced the launcher, installed clockwork and waited for custom ROMs. I did not (and have not) done the "lag fix" due to my (possibly incorrect) feeling that the risk/reward is too high.
Yesterday I installed Elements_Zinc_v1.0-themed
Nice, very nice.
Downloaded with ROM Manager, backed up, cleared cached.
First, it LOOKS nice, and thats important.
Second, its fast. My understanding is that the kernel is not over clocked, so it must just be the removal of all the crap.
To the developers: Thank you, so much. You have made the fascinate the phone that its capable of being, well done.
To other users: I suggest you do the same; install this package from ROM manager. I believe that you will not be disappointed.
Based on the excellent job that was done on this ROM, I am very much looking forward to a 2.2 kernel. Thank you again.
I agree 100%. I came from a d1 then d2 and bought this phone for the same reasons. I also would like to thank the dev community for all of their hard work and I can't wait until they get their hands on froyo to really bring out the potential this device has.

New ROMS based on what??? We have HTC Sense ROMs for Eclair 2.1 and Froyo 2.2 and AOSP CM 6.1. What else are you looking?
Personally I hate visiting the other device forums because everybody and their brother has 'cooked' up another ROM (mostly just new themes or added favorite apps). IMO who has time to stiff through all the various ROMs and threads? I find it much easier to review 3 different ROM threads and try to help others than to try and go through 10 or 15 threads and seeing messages such as 'well this worked on this ROM but it doesn't on that ROM, why not?'
OK, I'll get off my soap box now...

There's nothing wrong with that actually. Sometimes it's a good thing because there are more people developing towards something greater. We have 1 or 2 guys doing all this work. There are some pretty badass ROMs for the more popular phones out there. If we had more people developing and cooking, we'd no doubt have something better than what we have even now.
Screw those giant phones.
But a little more ROMS would be cool, we just need more people with the Aria.
It's not a bad phone...hah.

it's not a bad thing that we may only have 3 roms, but they are actually good quality roms, not just thrown together, and they are constantly being updated, but it would be kool if they had more help with them. I recently rooted and installed CM6.1.0RC2, and only thing I'd say it's missing is Flash Lite compared to Sense. Wish there was a way to get Flash Lite on CM, sadly not possible. any development going on?

Just made the jump to the Droid X and wondering if custom Roms are available or if I chose a lemon that's been passed by. PPCG have about 1000 posts for the phone itself. Looks like Moto phones wont work on HTC roms and such. I'm pretty lost on the issue as I've spent years on winmo and never had to worry about custom roms. now I am. What's the status of the Droid X for development and life? Is it gone already and I should get a refund?
It's all here.

Rubix 1.9.5 is pretty good. GummyJar 2.5 is great. And Liberty 1.0 which is more of an extension of GummyJar is by far the best.
Hey armus, I'm new to the Droid X also but it looks like there is plenty of development going on. I'm using the liberty rom (you can find it in the development section) its only on version 1.0 but its running flawlessly on my phone. You will need to download the Droid x bootstrapped from the marketplace (I think it was 1.50) but its worth it. I was using gummyJAR until liberty came out just a few days ago.

I use Apex 1.3.1
There is usually a good amount of development done for this phone. When it came out the bootloader was looked at as a obstacle that couldn't be overcome....we now have root, themes, custom ROM's and overclocking... Pretty much everything people look for when they want to mod... only thing we are missing is custom kernels (CMod) which would be awesome... but not a deal breaker. Aliasxerog on twitter is working on developing a new init.. So hope for the bootloader hasn't been given up either.
The best ones in my opinion are fission and liberty. Hey both have an app that allows for many easy customization options

Not even that close. Yet.
I actually came over from the Samsung Captivate. I do miss the wonders of custom kernels, but frankly, Liberty gives me everything I want from my X, so I've come to realize the locked bootloader is not a big deal. If they crack it, great. If not, I'm sure the devs will keep cranking out amazing tweaks. You can also find some good info on X ROM's over at droidforums.net. Good community here. I don't regret my switch to the X one bit.

well your best bet to learn about them... is to read about them. every ROM has a huge list of features and screenshots. do the homework and make your choice that way.
This thread I believe has all but one of the ROMs available for the Atrix listed in it if you scroll down, it's near the bottom, then you can go through each thread, look at screen shots, requirements to flash, etc. When I was trying to decide which ROM to flash first I used this thread as a guide, kept it open in one tab and opened the threads for each individual ROM in another tab.

I agree that Alien is a great ROM (I'm using it), but it's not a Vanilla ROM as the OP has asked for, and it's not as de-blurred as, say, Ninja or something. I dunno how usable Ninja is now, as Sam had to temporarily leave it for CM work...
@OP, you could surely flash the CM7 pre-beta, as it's quite stable. The only major thing that doesn't work as of now is the Camera, I believe...
