US Dell Venue Pro on Foreign Networks - Venue Pro General

It would be nice to have a place to gather all the info we can on that. I'm sure a lot of people are considering importing a DVP from the US but they have to know if it works.
Had anyone bought the US HTC HD2 and tried it abroad? I found an old thread where someone had bought the TMOUS HD2 to use in Egypt and it was fine.
This is what Dell had to say:
17:08:03 System You are now being connected to an agent. Thank you for using Dell Chat

17:08:18 Jerson_Berdos Welcome to Dell US Chat! My name is Jerson and I will be your Dell.com Sales Chat Expert. I can be reached at [email protected] or via phone at 1-800-289-3355 ext. 7284516. How can I help you today?
17:08:23 Jerson_Berdos Hi Steve
17:08:27 Steve Hi
17:08:58 Steve I was just about to order a Dell Venue Pro on your website but I need to clarif something
17:09:18 Jerson_Berdos Ok, what would it be ?
17:09:24 Jerson_Berdos Ill be happy to assist you.
17:10:29 Steve I know that the phone is sim locked to T-Mobile in the US but I'm leaving soon for Europe... Will I be able to use a European sim card in it or is it locked outside of the US too?
17:10:58 Steve I'm leaving in January for about a month
17:12:23 Jerson_Berdos I have to be straightforward Steve, it wont work because it is locked with T-mobile.
17:12:59 Jerson_Berdos If I may suggest, would you rather choose dell streak?
17:13:16 Steve I know but some phones are locked to a US network but still work in Europe so I was wondering if the DVP was one of these phones
17:14:03 Jerson_Berdos Im sorry but I cannot assure you if that would work.
17:14:48 Jerson_Berdos Do you want to purchase one right now?
17:16:01 Steve That was my intention but I need a clear answer to this and it seems you're almost sure it won't work. Yet it works with some other phones so I'm hesitant
17:16:44 Jerson_Berdos I understand.
17:16:44 Steve I would have thought that investing in a $500 sim free mobile would be enough to at least get it unlocked
17:17:34 Jerson_Berdos Oh I see
17:17:49 Jerson_Berdos Im sorry, still would not work in Europe.
17:18:24 Jerson_Berdos Still I cannot assure you. I dont want you to buy something not work 100% for you.
17:19:03 Steve So basically I won't know until some people report on it
17:19:39 Jerson_Berdos Yes.. :0
17:19:39 Jerson_Berdos
17:20:45 Steve You know it does support the bands I need so technically it should work don't you think?
17:22:44 Jerson_Berdos It's a possibility..
17:23:22 Steve do you genuinely not know or can't you tell me?
17:23:54 Jerson_Berdos The only information that I have here is it's for US use only.
17:24:49 Jerson_Berdos
17:25:40 Steve Ok then, I will wait before ordering. Thank you
17:26:24 Jerson_Berdos You're welcome Steve, Would there be anything else i can help you with?
17:26:49 Steve no that's it thank you
17:27:10 Jerson_Berdos May I ask you a favor? Can you answer the short survey that will appear after you exit this chat? Our team is determined to satisfy our customers and the survey responses will reflect our performance. We’d love it if you add some few notes on the “Comments” field.

17:27:29 Steve alright
17:28:30 Jerson_Berdos I hope you won't mind if I disengage our chat session for me to assist other customers online. Thanks!
17:28:52 Steve ok
17:28:54 Steve bye
17:29:05 Jerson_Berdos Thanks
17:29:20 System Jerson_Berdos has left this session!
17:29:20 System The session has ended

I was told to just call tmobile and ask for the unlock code. I'm also suggesting to try putting in a different (foreign or other carrier) sim to check if the phone is unlock. I have heard some rumors that some venue pro that was sold earlier was unlocked. Some customer service reps only read from scripts and since Tmobile is their launch partner, they discourage selling the phone to be use on a different carrier.

The ones that were sold early by Microsoft were unlocked and had no branding. It seems like the new ones have the T-Mobile branding and as such they are likely locked to that network.

Well,
Seems like Lionel Menchaca gave some interesting info on unlocking...
http://en.community.dell.com/dell-b...tails-for-customers-in-the-united-states.aspx
It seems that it currently isn't officially supported, but the phone will be released in different countries and sometimes fully unlocked...
Guess we'll have to wait...
It's hard, but I really want one so I hope that waiting will be worth it...

He's saying that in some regions the phone will be sold unlocked, like here in the UK. That doesn't change the question, even if the US version is locked to T-Mobile it could still be able to work internationally like the US HD2.

The phone does have the capability to work outside the US. You won't get the 3g data unless the carrier you have supports 1700 AWS, which I believe only T-Mobile and a provider in Canada use, so Europe is out on the high speed data

I believe it's 1700, 900 and 2100 so that would work in Europe.

Sorry sir, but you are wrong. I have explained this on another thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9564519&postcount=19
The DVP will definitely work on 3G in Europe, Asia, and North America.

Thank you sir .

Being Deployed to Germany - Can I Keep US T-Mobile Plan?

Hey guys,
So I'm being deployed to Germany for 2 years, and I would like to know if I can keep my US T-Mobile service and use it over there. The dude at T-Mobile said that my G1 will not work in germany. He said I would have to get a new, German G1 and get a new service plan with the provider over there.
My phone is currently rooted and I use Cyanogen's roms. I have no idea who the provider is over there.
Guessing I would be roaming?
G1 not a world phone?
Would tethering still work?
Any information or help is greatly appreciated. I leave next Tuesday and need to get things squared away before I go.
Thanks!
EDIT: Maybe this needs to be moved to Q&A, my bad. If so, mod please move it. Sorry
lol the provider over there is T-Mobile.... they're a german company
as for the phone I think (but not 100%) it will work.
Your plan is with T-Mobile US and thus you will be in roaming when in Germany, will cost you a heck of a lot of money, would be cheaper to cancel it maybe?
T-Mobile originated in Germany.
A quick google search shows that T-Mobile 3G operates on the 1700/2100 frequency in both the US and in Germany. So looks like your phone will have all its features in both countries.
you can call tmobile and tell them that you are being deployed, and you may be able to suspend but as mentioned above, you will be roaming and it will cost a ton, you can get a prepaid sim with service in germany and get your phone unlocked? may be an option, check the carrier in germany's website and see if they say what radio bands they use.
thanks for the replies. The d-bag at the t-mobile kiosk is obviously unaware the history of the company he works for.
He did mention though that it would cost a ton to stay on my US plan and use the phone over there. He said it can be done if the phone is unlocked. I'm not sure what that means, but, like I said, it is rooted.
Also, I don't want to suspend my plan, cause I'll still get to use it a lot. I'm not going into combat, just a medical station in Heidelberg, so I'll have off duty hours and would like to use sms.
Maybe did he mean I'd have to carrier unlock it, like I did to my old Dash? I dunno...god I'm a noob.

When you go to Germany and use a prepaid SIM, your phone will prompt you for the unlock code. Your phone comes locked to T-Mobile US, and SIM cards from any other providers (including T-Mobile Germany) will prompt for the unlock code.
You can get the unlock code by calling T-Mobile, if you've been a customer for longer than 90 days. As for root, it's unrelated to lock/unlock.

Ok, I understand. maybe I'll just get rid of the G1 plan and go back to my Dash, that's completely unlocked. Or maybe I'll just say F it and buy a new device when I get over there. Like I said, the only reason I'll be using it is for sms to my buddies, and an occasional call back to the US. But I might get an internet service for phone calls, I dunno.
I appreciate all the quick replies. I'll get it figured out. Probably just change to a German plan and get a new phone when I get there. Get a pretty good cost of living pay that I can buy a new phone with

Dude, keep your phone, it costs nothing but time to get it unlocked with T-Mobile, just tell them you need to use the phone overseas. I think it took 2 or 3 days to get the code after I made the request.
I agree. Tmobile unlocked my G1 when I traveled no problem. So call them and ask for an unlock code. Then just sign up with T-Mobile Germany when you get there. All will be well and you get to keep the g1

If you move outside T-Mobile USA's calling area (out of the country counts) and you can show them you did (call 800-937-8997) they will let you pass on the early termination fee.
Just ask a customer care rep know what you need to provided them to show you moved out of their coverage area to get your ETF fee waved.
Also if you have had TMO for more then 90 days you can reqeust a SIM unlock code. I would do this before you cancel service...

Unlocking us version of the dell streak!

I know this has been posted before but I don't know if anyone really understood or paid attention so I will post what needs to be done specifically to get ur US Dell Streak unlocked. Just contact ATT in regards to unlocking, make sure your account isn't past due and tell the customer service rep that you about to be deployed (or something to that effect) overseas and be very "adamant" about it.They will in return ask for the IMEI number and provide you with a unlock code. Once you have the unlock code.. just get another carrier's sim and put in the code and your good to go.. no rebel sim or anything else..!
You do not need to make that many storied neither you need to be dramatic just call ATT and tell them you have plans to travel outside US and need an unlock code for Streak.
They will tell you should use ATT then just tell them ATT roaming is very expensive story finished
OR
You can order yourself a Rebel 11 sim card

Well I am in US and i never gone through the hassle getting the code for so many of the phones
I was able to get my US ATT full price Streak unlocked by ATT, I had to fax the request after I called customer service and wait a few days but they provided the unlock
code and I am running on Cincinnati Bell now. I have also tested with TMobile and I get EDGE data and voice with no issues on both networks.
G
you dont have to make up a story or tell them you are going overseas. just asked them if you can get the unlock code for your dell streak. i bought mine subsidized undercontract and im not going anwhere, they still gave it to me. http://forum.pocketables.net/showthread.php?p=56578#post56578

My Streak is UNLOCKED!!!

Hi Guys,
Thanks to the lovely people at AT&T, I'm not the proud owner of an unlocked Dell Streak
They gave me an unlock code over the phone
BIG THUMBS UP AND MANY THANKS TO AT&T
Nice. How did you get them to give you the code?

...but, correct me if I'm wrong, other than ATT US and Telstra (who both use the 850mhz UMTS band), you won't get 3G on any other provider. Right? So what are going to do with it unlocked?
Sorry but I'm still lost as to why folks are selling (and buying) the Streak unlocked or trying to get it unlocked by their carrier. I usually ONLY buy unlocked phones and use them on ATT; but I didn't see the reason to buy the Streak unlocked. It's not a dual, tri or quad band 3G phone.
and rogers in canada. but it doesnt matter. you can still do 2g gsm with any provider and in any country.

I shall correct you...
The AT&T Streak runs 3G on tri-band 850/1900/2100. Yes, Telstra runs on 850. However, as the Streak was NETWORK locked to AT&T, if I put my Telstra sim in the phone would not work. Furthermore, Optus and Vodafone both run a 2100MHz 3G band here in cities and regional centres (even Wagga Wagga). So if I did switch carriers, I could still use it.
You ask what am I going to do with it... I plan on using it with a network other than AT&T i.e. Testra. In order to to that the phone had to be unlocked
I got this AT&T Streak unlocked so I could use it in Australia on the Telstra network. In Australia, Optus have an exclusivity deal with Dell so Telstra do not sell the Streak. Does that clear up with you why I got this phone unlocked? Because when it was locked to AT&T, I could not use it. Now it is unlocked, I can. Simple...

Thanks for that explanation! I saw you were ATT and I assumed that meant you were in the US. It makes sense for you to have it unlocked to use in Wagga Wagga.
Streak and Telstra
I am wanting to upgrade from my Telstra HD2 to a Streak. I was looking at using a my Telstra sim in an 'unlocked' optus unit.I see ATT/Dell US now sell 'unlocked' Streak's.
Did you import your Streak, or should I try to get the 850 working on a Optus?
If you have heard anything regarding optus units, please post.
Thanks

You can't just "get the 850 working" on an Optus Streak. The the frequencies that the phone will operate on is a hardware issue and no software can change that. The Optus Streak will ONLY use the 900/2100 bands for 3G and no amount of unlocking will make it use the 850 band for 3G.
The only Streak that is compatible with the Next G network is the AT&T version and I'm not 100%, but I think the Canadian version is also 850 3G.
I imported my Streak from the USA. If you wait until the 8th of December, you could get yourself either the Black or the Cherry Red unlocked directly from Dell.
http://www.dell.com/us/p/mobile-streak/fs
The only catch is, you need to find someone who is willing to do the ordering and post it for you. This also means that you need to be really confident in the xda member you're dealing with. I recently struck a deal with Killster on this forum, although I have dealt with him in the past. Personally, I prefer the white Streak from Best Buy over the cherry red but they aren't unlocked and you need to try your luck with AT&T to get an unlock code. I have unlocked two Streaks this way but I have no idea if they will unlock the Streak from Best Buy. I have a rebel sim so it's not that big a deal anyway .
Your best be would be to offer a trade for your HD2 plus cash in the Marketplace. Just be careful though, do some research on any xda members you deal with and ALWAYS keep everything public (no dealings finalised in PM).
Hope this helps,
Kris

Well there you go...
Either way, it's not hard to phone AT&T and ask them for a unlock code. I can't guarantee that they'll give you one but I have already unlocked two Streaks this way
Thanks for the info guys.
I saw the Engadget post a few days back, but was unsure about a US based telco giving me an unlock code. It's worth a try.
If I have no luck getting a Dell US unit, I believe Optus only has an exclusive for another month, so Telstra may offer it..?
Vodafone AUS were very forthcoming with a (sim) unlock code for a Legend I own, so it they get the Streak I could could give them a try..

New Unlocked Dell Streak! Froyo! TMobile USA 3G!!!!

Update: The three dell reps i talked to (one even being a supervisor) all claimed it would work with 3G, but ajftl on post #19 seems to have finally gotten a rep with a knowledgable responce, and after some research came back with:
12:19:31 AM Agent Donald T
yes we do have the unlocked version.. that can work with T-Mobile
12:20:06 AM Customer Manny
ok. work on t mobile 3g?
12:20:14 AM Customer Manny
or edge only?
12:20:58 AM Agent Donald T
2G with T Mobile.. 3G with AT&T
12:21:15 AM Customer Manny
ok .. thanks thats what i thought ...
SORRY! NOTHING NEW HERE...
Disclaimer: after my initial excitement of using this device contract free on TMobile USA with 3G and discussion in this thread, I have come to the conclusion Dell reps aren't usually the brightest when it comes to what they sell and the info delivered by them should be taken with a grain of salt. Given the fact that no rep would acknowledge the different frequencies used between TMo and ATT and would only refer to a phones "unlocked" status...
I just chatted with a dell rep on their website and they said the new unlocked streak will work on TMobile's 3G, HSPA+ even! Although i am skeptical it will be able to take advantage of the full speed... I tried to be as clear in my questioning as possible.

Except it is available to order on the dell website and will work with Tmo USA 3g Everything i have read indicated it would most likely still only get ATT 3G only bonus was factory unlocked for faster updates etc... but if this works on TMo USA 3G its GREAT!!!
Are they refering to the white ones?
No. Black/Carbon

ATT Ruby Red also available..
Would be nice if true, but there have been no announced hardware changes for the the streak to work on tmobile's hspa+ network. Only a handfull of the 1000 beta streaks have the correct gsm frequency. For hspa+ to work, the streak needs tmobile's 1700/2100 aws band frequency. I think the dell rep is mis-informed.
Yeah, I'm not sure either... I'm definitely stopping by my local TMo (which just so happens to be the only cell phone store that can actually hold a conversation with me regarding cellphones!!!) and ask them if they know anything...
hmm.... I am still skeptical, I want to believe it, but I will have to see it for myself.
A lot of the reps are mis-informed, noticed how she kept saying "as long as it is unlocked" I think this person has no clue about the different frequencies used by Tmo and ATT.
Exactly. I've been using a Beta Streak on TMO but just because it's 'unlocked' doesn't mean I get 3G. Please, original poster, or anyone else.... show us all in writing where the unlocked Streak will work with TMO's 3G.
You guys here in this forum on XDA should be smarter than to believe some random rep. Dell has been screwing us before. I won't believe it even after I see it on an official Dell page... only if I see them for sale and out in the wild!!
Yeah... I didn't manage to get over to my TMo like i wanted... but i just got off the phone with a dell customer support supervisor and he kept insisting the it would work with Tmobiles 3G... But you're right... I probably jumped the gun with this post. I appologize. I am still a little skeptical as well because they don't seem to ever recognize the fact that Tmo and ATT support different frequencies. They just keep saying "as long as it's unlocked"...
got a question for the unlocked streaks, will att know what device you are on...im asking because i have used unlocked devices as the nokia e71, and nexus and att doesnt kmow what device im using..for me thats good cause the imei comes up unknown...i would like to know this before i go ahead and get the unlocked version...also wht are the advantages of the unlocked over the branded ones other then updates faster and no att bloat ware...
mormegil83, just FYI, I talked to a buddy of mine who works at TMO (I worked at corporate store as well for 4 years)... they haven't heard anything about the Streak. The retail reps are usually kept in the dark. They would have only gotten any communication from the company if TMO were launching a Streak. So don't beat yourself up that you didn't make it down to a store today lol.
If anybody ever gets their hands on one in person, you can check the frequencies available by entering the engineering mode unlock code in the dialer, there is a radio band selector app among the engineering mode apps.

Damn! I much more likely to believe your guy than the three i spoke with... I guess it is same ol' story then... just slightly faster updates... that also explains why tethering is "free" With ATT 2GB data cap there is no reason to charge us for tether. We will just continually get hit with overage charges! So the only advantage for paying the xtra $30 is slightly faster updates -probably same updates the Euro version gets- and no ATT bloatware. BOOO!!!

[Q] US Compatible 3G Version release date?

Does anyone know or read somewhere when a GSM version for the US 3G Bands (850/1900) is going to be released?
The closest i read is that the Canadian version from Rogers is going to Hit around April 24th...
But nothing about an unlocked version yet...
I checked several websites, but most of them publish only the EUR version, and others post both 3G bands but when i asked them, they never replied back...
Is someone in the US using this phone already with AT&T or Tmobile and the 3G is working??
Cant wait to get one of these beauties!!
You're pretty right. Here in Canada Rogers is supposed to receive their supplies around the 20th.
No official release date though.
As for the unlocked version there might be some way to unlock it for a fee once released.
Best of luck! I can't wait either!
the guys from www.gummobile.com replied today, claiming that the version they sell is 3G compatible with the US.
Then to my reply asking what if i get the handset and it doesnt work, do you have a return program? their reply was, we sold one handset to someone in the US and he didnt complain...
I dont know why, but i dont entirely thrust them...
did someone here bought something from them?

no testing on 2g/3g or anything, I don't own a sim card to test with... Mine is wifi only. I believe it's only 1x or "edge" compatible in the US. if you want 3g in america, don't get the euro version, that goes for most cell phones.
