Wifi tether Fascinate with Galaxy tab? - Fascinate General

I had a previous thread asking about the wifi tether app. I downloaded version wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre14 and installed it... seemed to work when I locked onto it using my computer. It recognized it as an ad-hock network I think (in windows it shows 3 monitors connected in a triangle) to use it but it worked fine. Now while trying to find the SSID I assigned with my Verizon Galaxy Tab it doesn't show. Any ideas or settings I'm missing to link the 2?
I would greatly appreciate any help.

The tab and most other mobile devices won't recognize ad-hoc network connections. However, you can adjust the settings, using info in a post on this site, to use the stock 3G Hotspot app in AP/infrastructure mode and your tab would connect with no issues.

Maybe u should probably try a different version.... I have 2.0.5-pre11 installed on my Evo; and I tether with my Sprint Galaxy Tab no prob.

I'll try that and post back to let you know.

The version you use likely won't have any effect. The HTC Incredible and EVO seem to have the ability to present themselves as infrastructure mode access points with the wireless tether application, whereas other devices, like the Galaxy S phones do not. I could, of course, be wrong on some of the technical details, but I don't believe I've heard of anyone being able to tether another Android device to a Galaxy S device wirelessly, due to the ad hoc limitations. If somebody finds a way and proves me wrong, then great! But as I said before, I don't think any currently available version of Wireless Tether can do it, nor can the alternate Barnacle app.

No go with any of the builds of the wi-fi tether app. My Galaxy Tab just won't show it listed when searching for the SSID. Not sure what to do other than a USB or bluetooth link. sucky!

The QPST hack will work.

My iPad tethered without any problem.
When I tethered with a MacBook, I was not able to get any video chat apps to work. Tried MSN, Google Talk etc. Anybody has suggestions on this?

I was able to get it working thanks to Deodexed pointing me to his walkthrough. Here is the link for anyone else having troubles getting an ad-hoc connection on their Tab.

[Q] Wifi Tether, CyanogenMod,Froyo Rooting ?'s

Hi All,
First of all Wirless Tethering, I have One click Rooted my epic, and installed the wifi tether app but am not able to transmit signal (other devices cannot detect my wifi transition). In other words it’s not working. Do I have to install a specific kernel for this to work? and if so where would I get it?
Secondly, CyanogenMod and Froyo. Are they available for the Epic yet?, where, if not when?
Finally, Rooting, is there any way to tell that my device is perm-rooted? I want to make sure the rooting was successful even though it should be because my phone restarted like the directions said it would.
Thanks Much, p.s. I just left apple/att for epic/sprint so I don’t know all the terminology, please explain in detail Thanks!!
No cyangen mod 6 yet, or any roms yet, however roms will be coming real soon.
As for checking root try using an app that requires root like titanium backup.
For wifi tether, what version are u using?
Sent from my Epic 4G
for the Tether im using 2.0.5-pre8 istalled via tAttachAPkInstaller. I found this in the forums and people claimed to have success with it. The tether app in the marketplace said it needed a special kernel for it to work, any idea on where to get that and how to install new kernels?
To check root just type "su" in terminal and you should get "#" prompt.

Ur using the right wifi tether app, I use the same and it works fine for me. Idk why its not working for u.

Wifitether is probably working, it only broadcasts AD_HOC mode, which a lot of devices won't pick up. Make sure your Wifi drivers are updated and you are using a computer (not a p2p or DS).
I checked the root by installing titanium backup and it wen smoothly, but this damn tether app is driving me craZY! i have uninstalled and reinstalled the whole proccess and nothing works.... when i first start the tether app the download goes from 0 to .4 kb and the upload goes from 0 to .1 and then bot go back to 0 and thats it...... no other phones or computers have been able to see my signal... anything in the settings might be messing me up?? maybe diff chann?? im currently broadcasting on Chan 11.... even when i use bluetooth to connect it said paired but not connected....WHAT IN THE HELL BOBBY !!!!! i needs some helps
I had the same problem with wifi tether until I updated the wifi drivers on my PC. In my case I could see the network "androidtether" but attempting to connect caused the NIC to timeout requiring a disable/enable to get going again.
Still waiting for someone to get wifi tether working in access point mode. That's one thing I'm really going to miss from my Evo when I switch tonight.
I know its not wifi, but the pdanet tether application has been working great for me on the Epic. Its in the marketplace and can be installed without root. It does USB/Bluetooth, but not wifi.
OK i tried the PDAnet app but i cant seem to pair a friends iphone 4 with my device... i turn on blue tooth then pair then turn on the app and try to connect/repair but it keeps saying "paired but not connected" any settings i have to mess with on this app or the iphone 4 to make this work?
Thanks much for the helps.

I don't think the iPhone's bluetooth supports bluetooth DUN profile, that's why it didn't connect. iPhone's wifi supports ad-hoc wifi though.

10.1 with wifi tether?

I know with my Xoom I had to flash a patch to get it to connect to my tethered Thunderbolt, is it possible to use the Galaxy yet? Or is there a patch? I saw one for ADHOC in the 10.1v forums but wasnt sure if it worked for 10.1
Yes it does. Try it out. Don't forget to turn on airplane mode before following the procedure.
On a side note you might want to post this in the Q&A section, not development section. Especially since one week ago I posted a topic saying that it does in fact work - l2 search before posting.
Some people say that if you have the latest version of WiFi Tether on your phone that the Tab should see it. So try that first. However, my tab could not see it so i had to do things the old fashioned way.
If you are in the same boat then you need to replace wpa_supplicant which is in system/bin with the one from the xoom (search for it, there's a link to it somewhere in the Galaxy Tab 10.1 forums. that's because the Tab's wifi driver filters out Ad Hoc wifi servers (which your phone is). You will need Root Explorer or some other file manager for root users. Here is a quickie tutorial
0) make sure your tab has regular wifi access before you start this process
1) Get the wpa_supplicant file from this thread (look at the bottom of the first post)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1083182&highlight=wpa_supplicant
2) Unzip the file and get the wpa_supplicant file which is in \system\bin of the zip
3) On your phone go to \system\bin using Root Explorer and copy it to somewhere on your SD Card.
4) Copy the new wpa_supplicant file that you unzipped in step 2 to a folder on your tab's sd card
5) Turn on R/W access in Root Explorer
6) Replace the wpa_supplicant file in /system/bin with the new one
7) Final step VERY IMPORTANT - change the permissions on /system/bin/wpa_supplicant to be rwe
8) Reboot tab
9) Verify that you still have traditional wifi access
10) Turn on WiFi tether on your phone
11) Go into wifi settings in setup and see if your tab can now see Android Tether
This seems like a pain.. mine worked out of the box. Granted, I have a custom rom on my galaxy S (ATT Captivate).. using the built in Mobile AP in the settings. No external app required...
An access point is an access point (whether it is your phone or your router), why would the GT not connect to any access point?
I can tether with my captivate.

Because an access point is not an access point. There is a big difference between ad-hoc and infrastructure mode. Android won't connect to an ad-hoc network. And my OG Droid along with other, older Android phones won't do infrastructure right out of the box.
Last I checked, while Access points do have support for Ad-Hoc, that is not the primary purpose of an AP. Ad-Hoc is generally a non service providing device to device.
An Access point by its very nature of being an AP does so in infrastructure mode. I do realize that I may have jumped the gun as many of the older devices do not support functioning as a true AP, rather an ad hoc network with a proxy running in the background to proxy data.

Yes, it is a pain. But if you are using certain older phones (Android 2.2 or older) that do not provide infrastructure wifi then you are forced to make the Tab recognize ad hoc and out of the box the Galaxy Tab 10.1 does not.
I am glad for you and others who have had it easy. I suggest that people try to wifi tether the easy way first, without changing wpa_supplicant. But it is a method of last resort which is better than nothing.
Windows Phone to tether 10.1
So from what I'm reading on the forums, it seems most of you have android phones and are using them to tether to the 10.1 after rooting. I have a crappy windows HTC HD2, it has wifi router on it, but like everyone else the tab does not recognize it. I was hoping that this WiFi Tether thing, I assume it's an app? Will work if I get it. Any experience trying to accomplish this and give me the warm fuzzy if I happen to pursue installing and going through the root process that is already posted, that it will work? I'd much rather try getting this WiFi Tether thing than go through and root the tab.

Wi-Fi Tether is an Android app for phones, so I don't think it'll help you unless you put the Android ROM on your HD2. So you're gonna have to root and follow the directions posted to get it to work.
Use Barnacle Wifi Tether
Just use Barnacle Wifi Tether in the Market
...works like a charm with rooted Captivate and 10.1
My Milestone running CM7 connected just fine (first try!) using 3G Mobile Hotspot that comes bundled in CM7. Great speed too.
I haven't tried any other wifi or USB tether app.
New At This!
Hey all, Loving my GTab at the moment except for the inability to tether it to my iPhone. This is a new arena for me. I have been jailbreaking each of my iphone versions since the first but I have never had a Android phone before so no idea how to root it. The steps listed on the first page of this thread, are those the steps you have to follow AFTER you have rooted the phone? If so, I am assuming everyone has had success at rooting the 10.1 tablet so far. I ask cuz I would never tell my friends to jailbreak their phone cuz if you do not know what your doing you can screw something up. I dont want to fall into the same category. I am going to do a search for rooting in Galaxy Tab 10.1 but figured I would first see if those directions are all I need to know. thanks in advance and sorry if I missed any post that already has this info in it.
I asked you this in your other thread, but it's probably best placed here:
iPhone 4 or 3GS?
I don't think the 3 can create and infrastructure hot spot, only ad-hoc which takes rooting to connect to. I could be wrong about that though as I'm not an Apple guy.
If you have a 4, TetherMe is an app that should allow you to create an infrastructure hotspot and your 10.1 will connect to it. You won't have to root if you go this route.
Or you can just get a Nexus S 4G like me with infrastructure mode out of the box...

I have the newest iPhone4. I use PdaNet right now because it allows me to hide my usage so that AT&T can't be A-Holes and take away my unlimited data usage. I am not sure it has a Infrastructure hotspot like TetherMe does so I will check it and let ya'll know. Thanks for the help so far!

Ok it seems that PDANet doesn't have the infrastructure hotspot but fortunately TetherMe allows tethering on any APN that is used for iphone data. So the hide usage feature from PDANet seems to have been ported over to TetherMe so I am going to give it a whirl and see what we come up with! Too bad I paid for PDANet a while back! LOL

Installed and tethering perfectly without the need to root! VanSmack my man...Madd Props! However, I should note for those with iPhone4 looking to do this, I ran into a snag along the way. I am not sure why but TetherMe crashed during the middle of its install and took me about 10 mins to get it rebooted, purge of the half install and installed again. I am not sure if My3G and/or PdaNet conflict with the install of TetherMe or if it was a random glitch, but I uninstalled both of them and reinstalled TetherMe and it installed like a charm. Simple easy and connect. Thanks again everyone!

TetherMe now supports all iPhones from iOS 3.x up to iOS 4.3 so you should be able to use the same software I installed to tether your GTab. However the easiest way to check it is to go into cydia and find TetherMe and see if your device supports its. I would post a link but i'm a newbie thus its inactive.
As I understand it, the iPhone 3GS wifi chip does not have infrastructure mode coded into its firmware. Thus I don't think TetherMe will fix that problem, but my recommendation would be to try it and find out. Again, I'm not an Apple guy, I've just played around with others phones and that's what I discovered.
And no sweat, stat. Glad to help.

Got Wireless tethering to work But....

Ok so I got wireless tethering to work form my rooted Epic 4g to my galaxy tab 10.1 and its pretty cool. I did it with wireless tethering version 3. The only thing is that at first i couldn't get it to work because of the authentication once I turn off the encryption on my Epic it worked perfectly and connected right away. But what I don't get is why it doesn't work with the password if anyone can give me some advise why this is happening it would be cool, Thanks.
Strange, I tether all the time without issue. Should be possible. Are you using an app or built-in settings for tethering.
I got the app version (V3 is the only one that works) . I mean it works,..just not with the password on.
I use wifi tethering with my samsung galaxy phone with tmobile. you should try changing setting in build in tethering app and see if this works. I use 'quick settings' free app from market for quick access to wifi hotspot settings.
I have this problem too, it tethers fine but whenever it comes to things requiring password (like email logins) it rejects the password.
can any one who doesnt have this problem share which software they use for tethering?
how did you get tethering to work? i have tried the wpa_supplicant hack but the wifi drops every 10 seconds. what rom are you running & what supplicant file did you use?
It only works right with wireless tethering app version 3. Apparently if you have the rom that has it built in you shouldnt have any problems.
This is what i used http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I use bluetooth tethering fron my Win Mobile Treo Pro running wmwifirouter. I got tired of trying to root and do the wpa supplicant thing. Android needs to support adhoc wifi out the box across the board. So ridiculous really by now.
Still Cannot Tether
Ok...so Im still on an older phone ( Droid Eris ) but it's rooted running Gingerbread and the wireless tether v.2.07 works great with my laptop but wont work at all with the Galaxy Tab? I really don't understand this. I have tried everything from leaving it completely open to setting up all the appropriate authentication and access control. I tried the link in the thread for 3.0 and even select the Desire..which I think is the basis of the rom I am on...and just got errors in the log.
Anyone else having these issues? Not sure why it works fine on the laptop but not the tablet?
thanks
I am running v 2.0.7 on a myTouch. When I wireless tether with access control on I can check Gmail, but browser will not get websites. If I turn off AC, then browser works OK.

I think that 2.07 is ad-hoc only and honeycomb doesn't support ad-hoc. (someone correct me if I'm wrong). There are a few threads around here somewhere where you can replace/edit a file that allows ad-hoc support. As to your other question, I use Wifi tether-pre11 and it works without issue. I'll link it to you. Make sure you change "device profile" under settings in the app to correspond with your device. I had troubles with the app until I set the device profile to my device. Depending upon your luck, you may have to try a few different pre-release files on wifi tether 3.0 to find the right one. Like I said, pre11 works great for my Epic, but your device may be different. Just don't use the top one (test2) as I recall seeing that its meant for Samsung devices.

It is not possible to have two files in the same place with the same name. Remember to put the tablet into airplane mode first. Then just rename the original to wpa_supplicant.bak, copy in the new one (make sure name is wpa_supplicant), and edit permissions on the new file to have execute for all. Turn off airplane. Copy the .bak to somewhere safe. That should be all you have to do.
Thank you for your answer. I moved the original file n put it on my sd card. Left the new wpa_supplicant_a500_wifi_adhoc in the system/ bin n changed the permissions but still got wifi error. Maybe I have the permissions wrong is it all check on read, first two check on write n 3 checks on execute?? N the special no checks ??

I would like to do this as well. Right now, I have PDAnet on my iphone 3gs (jailbroken) and set it up as a wifi hotspot, but this is tedious and drains the battery. Bluetooth or hard tether would be preferable, but I think I'm just going to get an android phone and be done with this iOS crap.
I think android phones have the same issue. Read the forums if the wifi connection is an adhoc such as pdanet android os stick isn't designed to see it, which to me seems like a huge oversight.
I agree, it seems stupid that there is no native support for adhoc stuff. One should not have to root their phone for that functionality.
It like these manufacturers want you to buy their product, but are hell bent on preventing you from using it as anything but a expensive web browser. Just look at the list of all the stuff you can't do without "bending the rules" and rooting/hacking something.
There is no good reason for it!
Has anyone tried tethering via MyWi off Cydia? I just installed it to try out the trial but will not be able to test it out until later today. I'll give you guys and update, but I believe it also creates an adhoc network.
MyWi works, but has anyone been able to establish an L2TP over IPSEC connection over this kind of adhoc network tethering?
I took a look at the logs on the VPN server and looks like it never gets a response after the initial contact and just closes the connection because it declares the peer dead.

I tried to get MyWi to work, and it just doesn't. The wifi tethering hotspot seems to work (with the correct wpa_supplicant file), but PDAnet already does this for free. I was interested in either the hard wired or bluetooth functionality.
Simply put, bluetooth and USB tethering does not currently work on Honeycomb 3.1. I wish someone would prove me wrong, but everything I've read indicates that the support isn't there. I've seen a few people claim that they've gotten it to work, but they've never been able to back it up by explaining how.
Bluetooth tethering needs a specific profile, which does not appear in the settings window under the device when your iphone is paired. This should show up under "profiles" when you click the little wrench icon, but it doesn't appear to be there. Looks like you can pair with the iphone, but you cannot connect, which is the required step to get the profiles to show up. If you try to "connect" from the iphone side, it says A500 is not supported.
Furthermore, Honeycomb seems to have no embedded support for USB tethering. Hopefully someone can create an app which will allow an android tablet to be a USB tethering client.
Cheers,

Wifi tethering to Kindle fire

I bought this with the intentions of using the wifi from my phone. Did not know that the fire could not connect to adhoc connections. Is there any way around this? As of now the fire is pretty useless to me if i cannot get this situation sorted out. Thanks for any help.

You have to look up on how your phone does its wifi hotspotting.
I have a galaxy S and when I set up the wifi, kindle fire works perfectly fine from it.
Search around here, someone had mentioned an app that will share it as infrastructure and not adhoc, which I believe is what you would need.
That app would be wifi tether if you are on Android

I can connect to my Inspire 4g running CM7.
Try some different ROMS and see which ones will let you?
I am having trouble using the web browser with my Droid RAZR's wifi hotspot on verizon but book downloading, app downloading, and even prime video streaming seems to work fine. Not sure why the web browser doesn't.
Using my gf droidx and wifi tether I can finally get it to connect but then abruptly met with a verizon wallgarden page to sign into mobile hot spot.

Well as someone else mentioned, cyanogenmod on samsung galaxy s has no problems tethering. I still need to mod the Fire to allow adhoc tethering as I need it to be able to access my laptop's adhoc wifi... I think there are some files that need modifying i.e.
/system/etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini
/data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
I had a go but its beyond me abilities. Anyone else keen may gleen something from:

Hey Guys- So I have the samsung fascinate and have been trying to tether. I did some digging and figured out how too. This was on XDA archive I found:
Google android wifi tether. its on google code, get the latest experimental version under downloads.
set device profile to nexus one and setup method to netd(master) and it'll work with anything.

I downloaded the top "wifi_tether_v3_1-beta7apk" opened it with the "astro File" app, and it works great!!!!
Good job nfrees114, works perfectly with my atrix.
I'm using my AKF on my way to work through my phone without any issues
I'm also able to WiFi tether to my Android phone (Droid 3) using the WiFi Tether App.
I have had no problems tethering using my Droid Incredible (running CM7).

What about using a service like Dropbox? Upload a file from one device, and download it to another. If we are talking about video files however, that might not be practical, and then I'd suggest doing it via a PC (if available). I'm not aware of any apps at the moment that allow sharing of filesystems across devices. I'm sure there are possibly ways with things like SSH, but that might be annoying to setup for the average user.

If you have Internet it should not be a problem you can use Amazon cloud, but I think to use phone like storage device, for example on flights or places you could not use Internet

So, without internet, it's highly likely you wouldn't have WiFi on either tablet, how would you network the tablets together without a network?! One of your tablets would have to be a Hotspot to provide the IP address to the other (and I'm not sure about the software available to do this). Even then, you'd need some underlying software that was able to mount/read the sdcard from the other device.
If you did have WiFi, then it's likely you have Internet, in which case you've just answered your own question!
Not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying it seems to be a little impractical for the times you don't have internet, in which case be organized enough to transfer files in advance.
