[SOLVED] HTC Touch - retrieve contacts with broken touch screen - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Hi,
I have googled for several hours and found a lot of solutions, but there's always one step, which I can't pass through!
The situation is: HTC touch, everything is working, display is working, but the touch control doesn't.
The problem is that phone connects to pc as hard drive. So I don't have access to ActiveSync - when usb is connected it shows internet sharing tab. Because I cannot control anything via touchscreen, I can't get in any settings ... so options like sync with outlook, mymobiler ... are not able to be used.
I created .cab which should change registry entry to show connection type selection when usb plugged, but I can't confirm installation (is there a way to create cab which is installed without confirmation)- I can control the phone with cursor button and red/green buttons - so I can use some programs like tot. commander ... but I can't input any values, i can't access any options on soft keys ...
Does anybody have some idea ... I'm running out options ...
Thanks

Hard reset seems to be the obvious step.
Edit: sorry, I overlooked your post title, did you consider repairing your lcd or digitizer?

Try to find the program that actually toggles the USB. Some CPL only start a program that does the job finally. In the windows directory search for *usb* with TotalCommander.
Probably also BT connection to ActiveSync could be activated for RemoteAccess?

What happens if you do not have an SD card in the device? Will it fall back from Mass storage to AS?
Total Commander can also copy a reg-file to the registry, but for that you have to be able to select the options in TC - not an option either I think.
You could also use MortScript to write to the registry - must be installed first, however.
Probably there is a program that can map the softkeys to hardkeys?
What about AEButtons+

Thanx for all advices, but:
1. I wasn't thinking the screen, because that's my sister's old phone, and I need to get her PIM into new one (and throw this one against the wall) ... in the end she can manualy rewrite contacts, because listing in people is possible with cursor - but sms, call logs etc. will be lost and I'd like to save her from hours of manual writing hundret of contacts.
2. When connect without SD, no active sync connection or other selection appears - only internet sharing.
3. Copiing file in Total Commander is impossible to finish - by holding down the cursor I get menu (open, copy, send), but to comlete process I'd have to press softkey with 'ok'
4. I cannot establish any bluetooth connction, because it always require the code, which I'm not able to write withou touchscren
5. Mort script is unfortunately not installed
6. AEButtons could be good - but as it comes 'from an unknown publisher' - I have to confirm installation - what I'm not able to ...
... I'm slowly givin' up ... disabled digitizer always brings me into dead end.
I also thought about dump ROM and run it in emulator - but I've never done this and it would probably take more time to learn it then manual rewrite of contacts ...

What about executing PPCPimbackup on the device? This will save/restore the stuff you need on the device
...unknown publisher, is it?

Right - yes/no ...

When you connect the phone to the pc, do you have access to it´s storage? If yes, just grab the file PIM.VOL. Now, install microsoft emulator and replace this file. Now you can backup (and even sync if you install activesync) with the emulator.
You will need :
device emulator 3 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...af-12e3-4b2f-a394-356e2c2fb114&displaylang=en)
emulator images : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...a8-1dd7-426f-a913-4f370a65a582&displaylang=en

Man! You're my (resp. my sister's) savior! I don't have access to storage, but I've used total commander - copy to clipboard / paste from clipboard on sdcard and that allowed me to download it. Now I tried to replace pim.vol in new device - Topaz with lates Energy ROM - sms are not restored, but contacts and calendar are ... thats 90% what I needed!
Anyway I'm going to try emulator to get those sms ... but I'm sutisfied for now!!!

THANX!

The sms should be in cemail.vol, but I can't reach it ... the clipboard unfortunately doesn't work for this file, but sms weren't the main goal ...

You're welcome buddy. I always use the emulator for this kind of thing as it is safer, will not hurt my phone.

Dajbyco, could you please explain what you did cause I have exactly the same problem with my brother's phone. The screen is dead on his HTC Touch pro 2 and we need to retreive his contacts and calendar. I've downloaded Total Commander, but I don't know how to access the pim.vol file.
Thank you!

If the Active Sync Connection still works you can do everything remote via PC.

I can't do anything since I don't see what I do. The screen is black. So I can't reach the Active Sync Connection settings.

You don't need to access the AS settings on the device if it is not in "Mass Media mode". There is a remote management software that allows to see what is on the screen of your device. The only one I know that installs without any device-side confirmations is Everywan: http://www.sparus-software.com/en/download/software/everywan-remote-support,232.html
For accessing the options for Active Sync on the PC you do that directly in AS on the PC. To get best advice, could you tell what your problem is in detail?
So most important question:
Does the device connect to the PC in "Active Sync Mode"?

Same problem - how can I copy to clipboard

Hi, I have the same problem. What do you mean you used total commander and copy to clipboard? I have total commander open but when I connect my phone with the computer it does recognise the connection but it doesn't show any storage (shows drive but no access to it). So what can I then copy and how?
Many thanks!!

I have the same problem too, need help!! anyone knows how to fix this?thanks for any help.
Have you tried disabling file conversion?
Go to Activesync on PC then click Tools -> Advanced Tools -> Edit File Conversion Settings and uncleck the tick box.
If you are trying to copy files from the memory card then the best way is to put the device in Disk Drive mode. Connect device then click Start->Settings->Connection tab->USBtoPC->Disk Drive
I encountered this the other day, I think you can only copy files from the SD card to PC on the phone using active sync.
If however, if you want to copy files from your phone's internal memory, to your PC, i used a differnt program to do this, think it was either called 'My Mobiler' or 'Jeyo Mobile something' so try those programs!
I find ActiveSync to be an extremely poor program, I recommend using 3rd party apps to get full control over your phone!
I tried to use 3rd party application such as my mobiler, still encounter the same problem, any other ways?what the main problem that make this happen?help anyone?

How to "attach" USB Tool and activate "Internet Sharing" automatically at startup ?

How to "attach" USB Tool and activate "Internet Sharing" automatically at startup ?
I "liberated" my XP downgraded HTC Shift and succesfully tested 3G connectivity.
The problem is that every time I restart the device, I have to:
1) enter WM
2) Attach device via USB Tool
3) Enable Internet sharing
As WM is an operating system, I guess how to do this automatically. Can I write a "bat" file to do these steps or do you have any advice to achieve this ?
Any help MUCh appreciated.
Regards.

go to wm -win start menu --settings--connection--ub to pc--enable advance network connectivity.
this should fix the problem, cheers
Unfortunately, it does not solve the problem.
I noticed that the only thing I have to do is to activate Internet Sharing.
How to do this at startup, automatically ? Has WinMo some autoexec file or startup folder ?
Thanks.
Up, please. I'm so near to surf only starting up my shift
Up. Up. Up. Up.
Yes I'm sure you can do all of that with Mort Script,
Good luck!
And don't forget to post your final results so other users would enjoy of that!
unapproachable2kx,
can you support me ?
Maybe you can just drop the shortcut for the application on the startup folder or maybe DotFred's TaskManager can help(http://www.dotfred.net/TaskMgr.htm).

WinMo has a startup folder (\windows\startup\) that you can create a shortcut for "Internet Sharing" inside, the problem is that you need a parameter with the shortcut to run the "Activate" conmmand in "Internet Sharing"; 'cause a normal shortcut will just run the app, then you'll have to press Activate manually (we want to automate that too); same thing for "USBTool". Unfortunaltely, I don't know the set of parameters for the shortcuts.
Or try looking for some advanced shortcut creation tools for WinMo, like in this list

Broken Touchscreen/LCD Backup possible?

Hi,
the Display of my HD is broken and I but can start the device, but can not handle it.
So I Can Not backup my Contacts from the Device to my Computer, because of the system password which is necessary to start Windows Mobile 6.1
It is possible to start the HD in a 'Safe Mode' like Windows to backup all Files from the HDD of my device to my computer (without 'active sync')?
At the moment when I connect the HD to my computer via USB the device is identified as an extern HDD.
Thanks for your help!

Erm i think you'd need to have active-sync connection to be able to do anything like that. Otherwise you'll just have to wait for new lcd and repair it.
EDIT: Have you not got them stored on SIM card to use in other phone?

Unfortunately not.
All contacts are in the device memory.
How do the professionals in the repaircenter backup my data before they repair/open the device?
They don't.
Download http://www.mymobiler.com/ and see if you can control your device from your pc.

Yeah i was thinkin along them lines, but then you'd need bluetooth to be on and visible, maybe he hasn't as its a battery waste to leave it on.
Mmm you don't need to put in your startup password for Activesync to work.
So maybe the problem is with his usb connection if all he can see is the phone as a hdd.

Andrew
Problem is that i selected to use the device as hdd last time i connected with usb.
When i start the handy i hear the boot-sound, but i cant see anything.
So i need a option to skip the system password or start the handy via USB like a Bootloader or something else and copy all files from device to my pc.
Did you try http://www.mymobiler.com/ anyway ?

Andrew
I installed My Mobiler on my Computer and startet it.
Connected my HD to my Computer and the Computer detected the HD as extern HDD.
My Mobile on my Computer didnt recognize my HD.
MyMobile>Connect: Your Mobile may not be connected or ActiveSync connection is busy now. If the problem persists, please restart 'MyMobiler'
MyMobile>Configure Mobile>Install: PLease wait...Reinstalling MyMobiler on your mobile...... Unable to install....
Seems i can not skip my password.
I would delete and reinstall activesync and try again.

(don't give up)
i have windows 7 and no active sync running.
same problem unter windows vista.
So you are using Mobile device centre ?
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/help/synchronize/device-synch.mspx
Problem is i selected "use hd as extern hdd" and not activesync last time i connected via USB.
So on the one hand when i connect hd to computer its everytime detected as hdd because i cant use the touchscreen to selected the other option('activesync')
one the other hand i have to unlock via password the activesync connection if i could build up it.

yes indeed
Well I use XP and activesync.
Question - Has your phone worked previously syncing with Windows Mobile Device Centre ok ?
yes latest sync is from june 2009
Well I hope someone with your operating system reads this and can help more.
All I know is with Windows 7 and Vista you have to ensure your firewall settings allow the connection and some AV programmes can interfere - hope this helps.

just an advice for everybody.
make a backup every once in a while.
i for example i use Microsoft MyPhone and even if my HD or my sim card gets torched or kidnapped i will still be able to acces my contacts, photos, documents, sms etc. on the myphone webpage.
realy cool right?
so if you did use MyPhone then you can see your contacts.
good luck.
I think I've just thought of a solution for you...
Windows Mobile uses the "2577" directory, if it exists, in the root of your SD card to autorun installation scripts from. When I disconnect my HD from my PC in USB storage mode, the 2577 directory is read and installation files are executed.
It may be possible to run a mortscript or a cab file from there that will either back up your PIM data, or change the USB function back to Activesync - probably the latter is easier as I'm guessing it would just be a reg key that needs changing.

Need help with activesync on Win XP SP3!

Hi.
Some days ago i had a problem synchronize my HTC with PC in activesync (pc could not detect HTC), so i decided to reinstall it, but that doesnt solve my problem, instead of i now getting this message "To synchronize this device, you must install 4.5 or newer on your desktop computer." but i already have activesync version build (5096). Then i tried this: Soft reset, Hard reset, tried unistall activesync again - but that doest worked ! Maybe somene know how i can solve this, I'll be very grateful.
if you want to take the small risk, try removing all traces of Activesync connection from your PC and from HTC:
On PC:
1. search for this folder (or similar):
\\Documents and Settings\...your user name...\Application Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles\
inside it should be folder with your device name - remove it,
or just remove everything there
2. in registry remove all entries under the key (not the key):
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners
On HD2:
3. It would be good to make full system backup first, or at least PIM data (contacts, appointments etc.) backup
4. DON'T remove connections in ActiveSync application or you'll lose all your PIM data
5. in registry remove all entries under the keys (not the key):
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Partners
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners
6. you could aslo delete all contents inside Windows\ActiveSync folder - not sure if this is necessary but will not harm you
now restart both your PC and HD2, connect the cable and it should be just like the first time those two have met,
hope it'll work

[Q] SD card path

Hi,
I created an app that reads a csv file from storage card. This file should be created with excel from a PC and saved to the connected device's storage card with a macro.
My problem is that I can't find which path I sould use from the excel macro to directly save it to the SD.
Can you please help?
Thanks
You can't do it directly. Although Explorer shows your mobile device as being accessible from ‘My Computer’, in reality it is using ActiveSync to get at it. Without ActiveSync installed there is no 'Mobile Device' visible.
From a command line there is no direct method to get to your device, but you can do it indirectly in a two-step process.
Firstly, download and install the Windows Mobile Developer Power Tools - WindowsMobilePowerToys.msi from here
One of the utilities in the above is CECopy. It runs as a command line program using “DEV:” to represent your mobile device. The two steps now become:-
1.) Save your spread sheet to the hard disk as C:\TEST.XLS for example, then use:-
2.) CECOPY C:\TEST.XLS DEV:\Storage Card\TEST.XLS
It should do the trick, I have just tested it on WinMo 6.1 and it works a treat! It goes without saying that ActiveSync must be installed on the PC and the mobile device connected. Good Luck!
Code:
C:\PROGRA~1\WI1C69~1\CECopy>cecopy readme.txt dev:\readme.txt
Connected.
Syncing from <readme.txt> to <dev:\readme.txt>
"readme.txt" Copying (New) ... 2/2 k ok
C:\PROGRA~1\WI1C69~1\CECopy>
It worked fine, thank you
